WORK IN PROGRESS

While this blogspot has been testing the market and enjoying positive feedback, the development of a fully fledged website which will cater for the needs of most racing enthusiasts in Queensland has been a work in progress. The latter now needs specific attention to enable it move forward to meet its goal.

As the development process is a time intensive exercise, I will not be attending race-meetings for the next five days as I will be away, working on finalising the website requirements.

As a consequence of this, there will be no reviews of meetings from December 3 to December 8. News stories will be posted during this time.

SUNSHINE COAST REVIEW (SUN, NOV 30)

A review of the meeting held at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, November 30.

Race 1:

Maiden Handicap 1200m
1st - Laurels; 2nd - Go Rainey; 3rd - Lee Kova

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Paul Hammersley: “Not much to report. The win was as easy as it looked. The horse just made me look good.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Oculus (A. Spinks) commenced to race ungenerously leaving the 900m, and approaching the 800m had to be steadied off the heels of Colin (C. Reith), which shifted in. Go Rainey (N. Thomas), which was following, had to be steadied off the heels of Oculus as a consequence. Oculus then continued to race ungenerously for some distance. A. Spinks, rider of Oculus, reported that, in his opinion, the horse got its tongue over the bit shortly after the start which may have contributed to the horse's racing manners. Mr G. Burns, trainer of Oculus, reported that it would be his intention to experiment with gear changes to improve the racing manners of the colt. Left Hook (M. Hughes) shifted out leaving the 300m and brushed Oculus, which had to be steadied. M. Hughes, rider of Left Hook, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Candyjess (J. Taylor) raced greenly in the early and middle stages.

Race 2:

QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate - 1400m
1st - Pea Eye Cee; 2nd - Le Mirage; 3rd - Grey Mark

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Paul Hammersley (who landed an early double with race to race wins, both for the Bryan Guy stable): “He looks to be a nice sort of horse. It was only his second start and he’s still learning, but he did it well today.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Trainer R. Heathcote was fined $200, for failing to declare riders for Flash Romeo and Le Mirage by the prescribed time. One Octave Higher (M. Speers) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with Indeseao (K. Wharton). G. Baker, rider of Justly Proud, dropped his whip near the 300m. Indeseado raced wide for the majority of the event. A post-race veterinary examination of Le Mirage failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 3:

Maiden Plate - 1600m
1st - So Long; 2nd - Elate And Excite; 3rd -Stateside

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Rob Bradshaw: “Look, in my opinion he should have won his last three starts. He got back in the running every time and charged home. I said to Todd (Pannell) that he must get him going, settle in a reasonable position and then ride him quiet and he’ll come home strong ... and that’s the way it worked out. I’ve only had him for five runs. I stepped him up to 1600m for his last three starts. He’s been showing progressive improvement and deserved this win.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Mapadama (J. Bowditch) and Stateside (P. Hammersley) made contact at the start when both shifted ground. Abindah (M. Speers) shifted in shortly after the start, making contact with So Long (T. Pannell). Elate And Excite (O. Turpin) had a tendency to over-race for a short distance when being restrained near the 1200m. Fly Misty (G. Baker) shifted out near the 300m, hampering Mapadama (J. Bowditch). A short distance later, Fly Misty shifted in, inconveniencing Stateside (P. Hammersley), which then had difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 100m.

Race 4:

3yo & Up Class 1 Handicap - 1000m
1st - Brackin Road; 2nd - Pride Of Poland; 3rd - Crystal Rocket

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Co-trainer Jason McLachlan: “That was his first run for us. It was important to get that message through to the jockey. Either way it is a new ballgame, so when I gave the boy a leg-up I said, ‘forget about any previous form, he’s racing for us now.’ I’m pleased that we could win first time out for the owner and I’m also very pleased for the jockey. Give him a rap will you. He works so hard, he deserves some success.”

Jockey Nathan Thomas: “He was badly outpaced early and I saw no point in chasing him. Even when we came into the race I thought, ‘this is good, we’re going to run third, we’re going to finish third’ ... and then he just burst through at the right moment. 1200m will be his go for sure.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Crystal Rocket (A. Spinks), which had a tendency to lay out near the 650m, had to be checked when momentarily tightened for room by We’ve Got Issues (A. Pattillo), which shifted in. At subsequent inquiry, A. Pattillo, rider of We’ve Got Issues was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. Diasco (J. Warrington) raced wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of Brackin Road, trainer J. McLachlan stated that the gelding was having its first start for his stable and had worked and trialled well leading into today's race and an improved showing was expected. Stewards noted the explanation.
A post-race veterinary examination of Caucus revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer J. Fleming was advised that he must provided a veterinary clearance for the gelding prior to its next trial or race start.

Race 5:

Class 2 Handicap - 1200m
1st – Blow The Bugle; 2nd - Larry's Song; 3rd - Kalinga Steel

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Troy Hall: “I told Owen (Turpin) to spear him out of the stalls and get across. I didn’t think there was much speed in the race, so I thought he should be able to do that comfortably. Once there I wanted him to give the horse a breather if possible and then kick home. The other one (Larry’s Song) did look a threat halfway up the straight, but, no, with the race run according to the way we wanted it to go, we were always going to be too strong.”

Apprentice jockey Owen Turpin: “I had to really rev him early. Then, when I got across from the draw, I gathered him in again. When I let him go in the straight he was full of running. They were never going to get to my horse.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Meter Maid (Matthew Palmer) and Larry’s Song (S. Shield) over-raced in the early stages. Smart Opinion (Michael Palmer) raced wide in the early stages. Page Number (C. McIver) improved on to the heels of Kalinga Steel (A. Pattillo) and had to be steadied approaching the 800m. Kalinga Steel (A. Pattillo) had difficulty obtaining clear running from leaving the 400m and until near the 200m. Meter Maid bled during the event. Trainer T. Bailey, through his stable representative, was advised that Meter Maid would be barred from racing under the provisions of AR53A for a period of 3 months. A swab sample was taken from Meter Maid.

Race 6:

Class 4 Handicap - 1600m
1st - Cole Trickle; 2nd - Life's Short; 3rd - Chaufuhr

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Ray McCall: “He’s is the type of horse that if you let him have his own way up front during the race you will struggle to get past him in the finish, because he will fight you all the way. This is his second win in a row and in both races they looked like they were coming to get him, but he just refused to give in.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Leaving the 1100m, Chaufuhr (N. Thomas), which was over-racing, improved on to the heels of Le Celibataire (K. Pope) and had to be checked. Octahedron (A. Spinks) commenced to lay in under pressure leaving the 400m until the winning post, proving difficult to ride out.

Race 7:

Open Handicap - 1300m
1st - In Rehearsal; 2nd - Messiaen; 3rd - Lombardy

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Co-trainer Jason McLachlan (after the stable had landed a double on the day): “That’s a great comeback after the Cairns trip. He’s a good horse fresh and I told the kid he would get back early and be strong in the finish. The jockey (Owen Turpin) rode it a treat. He’s had two rides for us this weekend and brought home two winners so we got no complaints there.”

Apprentice jockey Owen Turpin (who was also completing a double at the meeting): “I tried everything to get him to jump cleanly. I was keeping him ready. I was tapping the stall to keep him alert. I pushed him when we jumped and what does he do, he strolls out of the barriers. That’s apparently what he usually does. That’s why he races over more ground generally, because he usually gets too far back to be effective over the shorter trip. But he certainly has the ability and he showed here how good a horse he can be over 1300m or 1400m if things go his way.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
In Rehearsal (O. Turpin) was slow to begin. Noble Gaze (E. Wilkinson) commenced to race fiercely shortly after the start and continued to do so for some distance, and near the 700m, had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room by Rebounded (M. Radecker), which shifted in slightly. Nearing the 200m, Malta (J. Bowditch) had to be steadied when tightened for room by King Latarmiss (K. Pope), which shifted out under pressure, and Noble Gaze (E. Wilkinson), which was tiring and shifted in. Rebounded and Secrets Untold (S. Seamer) raced wide throughout.

Race 8:

Class 1 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Yatala; 2nd - Tanzill; 3rd - Showlisa

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tony Crane: “People were bagging me for running her three weeks in a row. But she hadn’t done anything in her last two starts. She was slaughtered in her last two starts. Seriously, the riding there was a disgrace. She saw more of the outside fence than the inside rail and also had a good look at the grandstand. She just needed to be ridden well to be competitive. That happened here and we got the result.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Devils Ransom (K. Wharton) was slow to begin. The Ultimate Act (P. Hammersley) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with Tanzill (A. Pattillo). Devils Randsom had a tendency to lay in between the 800m and 600m and as a result brushed the running rail on a number of occasions. Craiglea Falcon (C. Dixon) raced wide for the majority of the event.

EAGLE FARM REVIEW (SAT, NOV 29)

A review of the meeting held at Eagle Farm on Saturday, November 29.

STEWARDS SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT:
From QTC meeting, 22.11.08
Trainer R. McCall reported that MELRINA MISS pulled up sore in both forelegs and will be sent for a spell.

Race 1:

Class 6 Plate - 2132m
1st - Dream Gal; 2nd - Monashee Princess; 3rd - Regal Gaze

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Danny Craven: “Yeah, the plan was always to ride her cold and not rush her at all. For a 2000m plus horse she has very strong acceleration, but it only comes in a short burst so the timing of the run is critical. She gathered them in very quickly when she did make her forward move and had the race won before the line. Her run before this was also tremendous. We just had to work out how to ride her and we got it right here.”

Winner price fluctuation: 5.00 steady.
Favourite price fluctuation: 2.80 in to 2.70 out to 3.00 (Regal Gaze).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Passing the 1900m, Degenda (C. McIver) commenced to over-race and did so until near the 1200m. Near the 1800m, Bugsytwoshoes (P. Hammersley) and Lady Hybrow were momentarily placed in restricted room between Regal Gaze, which shifted in slightly, and Heartland (A. Taylor), which shifted out slightly. Regal Gaze (E. Wilkinson) and Dashing Dodge (A. Pattillo) raced wide in the early stages. Lady Hybrow shifted out passing the 1600m and was then obliged to race wide until near the 1200m. Approaching the 900m, Monashee Princess (K. Forrester) shifted out off the heels of Bugsytwoshoes and in doing so was then obliged to race wide for the remainder of the race.

Race 2:

2yo Handicap - 1000m
1st - Double Heart; 2nd - Sarge In Charge; 3rd - Moonlight Hussey

WINNER FEEDBACK
Trainer Helen Page: “He was a handful on his debut. He sat down in the barriers. He pig-rooted after the start and did a lot more wrong in the race. Jason (Taylor) said that, under the circumstances there, it was a huge result for the colt to get so close. He’s a colt you understand. You would think he would be better as a gelding but he is by Lion Heart and you can’t start gelding everything that is showing coltish behaviour.
“There was no re-schooling or anything like that. It was purely what he learnt from the first run and because of that he brought a bit more maturity to the race today.”

Jockey Jason Taylor: “He did everything wrong on his debut. He did everything right today. It was almost like he was just playing first time out. He started badly. He did a few hops and wanted to run around in the race. Today it was pure business. An absolutely professional performance.”

Winner price fluctuation: 4.00 out to 5.50.
Favourite price fluctuation: 3.80 out to 4.20 in to 3.90 (Sarge In Charge).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Lord Linlithgow (S. Seamer) jumped away awkwardly and lost considerable ground. On jumping away, Jamaican Bolt (R. Wheeler) was tightened for room between Devil Rider (A. Pattillo) and Dashing Irmy (R. McMahon), which shifted in after jumping away awkwardly. Near the 900m, Sarge In Charge (S. Scriven) had to be steadied off the heels of Moonlight Hussey (P. Hammersley), which shifted in. P. Hammersley, rider of Moonlight Hussey, was reprimanded. Sarge In Charge then commenced to over-race and approaching the 600m had to be steadied off the heels of Dashing Irmy. Approaching the 800m, Dellblu (M. Palmer), Moonlight Hussey (P. Hammersley) and Surf’s Up (T. Treichel) were all placed in restricted room between Sarge In Charge (S. Scriven) and Dashing Irmy which, when hanging out, shifted out. Dashing Irmy then hung out for the remainder of the event, placing its rider at a disadvantage. A post race veterinary examination of Dashing Irmy failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer S. Hunter was advised that Dashing Irmy must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start. Mr Hunter was also requested to notify stewards of any abnormality which may come to light which may have had a bearing on the performance. Trickett (O. Turpin) and Dellblu (M. Palmer) raced wide for the majority of the event. The club's veterinary surgeon also reported that Surf’s Up was shin sore in both forelegs. Trainer T. Bailey was advised that he must provide a veterinary certificate prior to its next race start.

Race 3:

NMW Handicap - 1600m
1st - Jacaranda Charm; 2nd -Khataaf; 3rd - Lucky Luna

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Sue Maloney (partner to trainer Bruce Ruming). “When she was out for a spell Bruce half wanted to call it a day racing-wise and breed with her because he thought her form wasn’t that flash. But I work closely with the horse and together we decided to give her another prep. She’s now won all three since resuming. Kevin (Forrester) is our lucky charm. He’s won five times on the horse. The combination hasn’t been beaten yet.”

Jockey Kevin Forrester: “I thought I was too close because they went very fast for the first 1000m. But she’s got plenty of fight this mare. When she got to the front and the other one (Khataaf) fought back, she allowed the other one to come up to her, but she wouldn’t let it past her.”
Winner price fluctuation: 15.00 out to 17.00.
Favourite price fluctuation: 3.40 out to 3.50 (Lucky Luna).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Passing the 1400m, Intertheblack (A. Coome) commenced to over-race and near the 1300m had to be steadied off the heels of Beartracker (E. Wilkinson). Near the 1000m, Tejada (M. Palmer) improved on to the heels of My Council (J. Bowditch) and had to be steadied. Beartracker (E. Wilkinson), which was following, had to be steadied in consequence. Approaching the 50m, Lucky Luna (S. Seamer) was obliged to alter course outwards after being disappointed for a run between Khataaf (B. Pengelly) and Jacaranda Charm (K. Forrester), which shifted in. Passing the 50m, Intertheblack (A. Coome), which was weakening, shifted in and bumped Telfire (C. McIver). La Marianne (J. Taylor) and Jackson Hill (B. Evans) raced wide throughout. Khataaf lost its off-fore plate in running. A post race veterinary examination of Defend The Hill (A. Spinks) failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. The club's veterinary surgeon also reported that No Technique had sustained a laceration to the near hind canon. Jockey B. Pengelly was fined $200 for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram over his declared riding weight. AR145.

Race 4:

3yo Handicap - 1200m
1st - Silvern; 2nd - Left Standing; 3rd - Presley

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Co-trainer Jason McLachlan: “He’s a good horse ... still lightly raced. He has taken a bit of time to find his feet after showing early potential. The last two wins have been over 1200m. We tried him over a mile before and he didn’t stay, but I’ll guarantee he’ll get seven furlongs.”

Apprentice jockey Owen Turpin: “We popped onto the fence and settled really well just off the speed. It was fairly tight and I pushed one out at the turn to give myself options if the inside run didn’t come. When I got the split he responded well. Last time he won by five-and-three-quarter lengths. This time he had to chase and stay focussed late. He did it just as well as the one before.”
Winner price fluctuation: 5.00 out to 5.50 in to 3.90.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Woorim (E. Wilkinson) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with Rothera (B. Evans). Dane Rhythm (S. Seamer) jumped away awkwardly. Upi Bay (K. Pope) and Falverosa (Matthew Palmer) were slow to begin. Daddy’s Little Girl (L. Nolen) over-raced in the early stages. Passing the 1000m, Woorim (E. Wilkinson) had to be steadied when tightened for room between Pandemonia (S. Scriven), which shifted in slightly, and Upi Bay, which shifted out. Near the 900m, Upi Bay (K. Pope) had to be severely checked when tightened for room by Pandemonia, which when over-racing shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. Stewards gave consideration to the racing manners of Pandemonia, including its last start, and heard submissions from S. Scriven and trainer L. Birchley, who stated that he intended to experiment with gear changes at the horse's next start. Stewards nevertheless ordered that Pandemonia must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to its next race start. Passing the 500m, Upi Bay (K. Pope) shifted out and made contact with Woorim (E. Wilkinson). When questioned regarding the performance of Woorim, jockey E. Wilkinson stated that he anticipated the horse settling towards the rear of the field, however approaching the first turn Woorim met with interference and this resulted in it settling a little further back in the field than he would have liked. He further added that rounding the home turn, he endeavoured to move Woorim to the outside to give the horse an uninterrupted run, however after shifting out to that position he believed that the ground was inferior given the recent racing and he elected to allow Woorim to shift back in to what he believed to be better going. He further added that when Woorim was struck with the whip near the 150m, it ducked out across the heels of Falverosa and had to be steadied. He further added however that Woorim failed to sprint as anticipated in the home straight. Trainer Mr R. Heathcote stated that he was a little disappointed with the horse's performance, however added the tempo of the race may not have suited horses which were positioned in the back half of the field. He further added that Woorim was second up today and had not trialled prior to its first up run and that this may have affected the horse's performance today. A post race veterinary examination of Woorim failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Mr Heathcote undertook to report any abnormality that may come to light which may have had a bearing on the performance today.

Race 5:

Country Cup 1MW Handicap - 1200m
1st - Taabinga Lass; 2nd - Andamon; 3rd - Sun For Sale

This race was contested under a storm warning. It looked like someone had turned the lights out at Eagle Farm.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Paul Hammersley: “I wanted to get back to scale as quick as possible. I don’t like getting wet, and I think the horse felt the same way, that’s why she won. There were no real instructions. She jumps well and they just said to place the horse where she was comfortable. She did a good job in the straight.”

Winner price fluctuation: 51.00 out to 61.00.
Favourite price fluctuation: 4.00 out to 4.20 in to 3.70 (Firedrake).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Trainer L. Hickmott was fined $100 for negligence in that he declared S. Seamer as the rider of Taabinga Lass without first confirming that engagement. Passing the 800m, Intermac (J. Taylor) commenced to hang out and shifted out, forcing Longstreet (K. Wharton) wider on the track. Intermac continued to hang out until shortly after straightening. Apprentice L. Rolls, rider of Sea Zulu, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 250m he allowed his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of Intermac (J. Taylor), resulting in Intermac being checked when tightened for room between Sea Zulu and Paradise Dancer (A. Taylor). L. Rolls was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 3 December and to expire at midnight, 12 December 2008. Approaching the 100m, Intermac was disappointed for a run where there was doubtful room between Paradise Dancer (A. Taylor) and Sea Zulu (L. Rolls). Consider Yourself (M. Morris), Paradise Dancer (A. Taylor) and Longstreet (K. Wharton) raced wide throughout. D. Craven, rider of the 2nd placegetter, Andamon, was fined $200 for weighing in excess of half a kilogram overweight.

Race 6:

Tattersall's Recognition Stakes Handicap (Listed) - 1600m
1st - Rags To Riches; 2nd - Hey Elvis; 3rd - Jujulio

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley: “I wasn’t exactly sure where I was with the horse. I thought he might have been half a run short because he had a bit of a rough trip back from Melbourne so I had to back off his work for about a week. By rough I mean he didn’t take the trip well. We know he is a much better horse than the form he showed down south. We went for a couple of country cups but that didn’t work out.
“He is a bit of a contradiction this horse. He is very timid when racing in-between horses. That’s why he has to lead or at least be kept wide in his own space. But on the other hand, when he gets into a battle with another horse, he just won’t back off. He keeps fighting as he did here.”

Jockey Shane Scriven (who would have ridden Alverta had that runner accepted): “That’s what this horse is all about, mate. He just loves a scrap like that and it is a pleasure to ride one that does because not all of them do.”

Winner price fluctuation: 8.00 steady.
Favourite price fluctuation: 3.30 out to 3.40 (Hey Elvis).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Cocktail Supreme (B. Pengelly), which was over-racing in the early stages, shifted out off the heels of Hey Elvis (P. Hammersley) near the 1000m and in doing so made contact with Hard To Catch (J. Bowditch). Near the 50m, Hey Elvis (P. Hammersley) and Rags To Riches (S. Scriven) both shifted ground and brushed. Mr Hornblower (T. Pannell) and Hard To Catch (J. Bowditch) raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Mr Hornblower revealed 2 small lacerations to the near hind tendon.

Race 7:

F& M Plate - 1200m
1st - Insistence; 2nd - On The Fridge; 3rd - Seconde

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Gillian Heinrich: “You know I looked at the field and thought, ‘there’s some tough opposition here’. Then you get a wide barrier and you think, ‘well that doesn’t help’ ... so it was always going to be tough. But she handled herself beautifully.”

Jockey Michael Palmer: “I was a bit surprised how easily I was able to get across from the draw. She does like a bit of give in the ground so when that shower came through earlier it probably helped her a bit. Once we got to the front I was able to control things. I gave her a breather along the way. She did it perfectly at both ends.”

Winner price fluctuation: 21.00 in to 17.00.
Favourite price fluctuation: 3.20 in to 2.60 (On The Fridge).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
She’s In The Guide was declared a late scratching at 4.21 pm after the saddle broke. On The Fridge (S. Scriven) was hampered on jumping away between Karalee (S. Seamer) and Desdemona (J. Bowditch), which jumped inwards. Rapid Babe (K. Wharton) blundered on jumping away. Near the 1000m, Karalee (S. Seamer) was hampered by La Goulue (L. Nolen), which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. Passing the 800m, Bareena (R. McMahon) and Seconde (A. Pattillo) came together. Near the 300m, Bareena shifted out away from the heels of Red Letter Daze (Matthew Palmer) and in doing so made contact with Sequential Charm (C. Spry). Passing the 200m, Calchris (P. Hammersley) shifted out to improve and in doing so made heavy contact with Acquired (J. Taylor). Miss Watagan (A. Spinks) and Red Letter Daze (Matthew Palmer) raced wide for the majority of the event. A post race veterinary examination of Sequential Charm failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. The club's veterinary surgeon also reported that Sashenka had lost its near fore plate in running, and had overreached on the inside heel of the off-foreleg. Trainer A. Bailey stated that Sashenka would be sent for an immediate spell.

Race 8:

Class 6 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Reincarnation 2nd - Satsang 3rd - Belles Opinion 4th - Framous

Trainer John Thomas: “The loves the wet mate. He needs these conditions to show his best.”

Jockey Andrew Spinks: “The wetter the better. It makes all the difference to him.”

Winner price fluctuation: 15.00 out to 17.00.
Favourite price fluctuation: Joint favourites:
5.50 out to 6.50 in to 5.50 (Kanetoshi King).
5.50 steady (Thorondo).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Shortly after straightening, Thorondo (J. Bowditch) shifted out, taking Hy Dream (S. Scriven) out, momentarily inconveniencing Wings Of Seraph (S. Seamer). Tarlee Dancer (T. Pannell) and Wings Of Seraph raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Kanetoshi King failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Jockey E. Wilkinson, rider of the 5th placegetter, Riseupsinging, was fined $100 for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram overweight.

IPSWICH REVIEW (THURS, NOV 27)

A review of the meeting held at Ipswich on Thursday, November 27.

Race 1:

4yo & Up Maiden Plate - 1666m
1st - A Tad Smugg; 2nd - Ronstadt; 3rd - Straight Shooting

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Shawn Dwyer: “He’d bred to stay further than that. But he is not a hardy sort. He’s a bit of a soft breed and the slow going would have helped him. Jason (Taylor) said he didn’t think he could get to the frontrunner (Ronstadt), but he said he wasn’t about to stop trying.”

Jockey Jason Taylor: “I got a lot further back than I was meant to be. He wasn’t travelling that well early. Then, about the 700m mark, he started tracking into it. At that stage I was just weaving my way through. I didn’t want to go around them. Approaching the turn I saw the leader (Ronstadt) slip away again and I thought, ‘I’m in trouble here ... it looks like I’m only racing for second.’
“But, in the back of my mind, I knew that they’d gone a pretty lick early and so there was always a chance. All I could do was keep chasing. It only just worked out in the end. I would have been in trouble if it hadn’t.”

Winner price fluctuation: 2.40 steady.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
A Tad Smugg (J. Taylor) was slow to begin. Perfect Glass (J. Wood) threw its head up at the start and lost ground. Shortly after the start, Got The Cash (W. Clasohm) shifted out, making heavy contact with Mr Daybreak (J. Bowditch). Little Bobby (T. Pannell) and Perfect Glass both raced wide from the 700m onwards.
Ribless (P. Gesler) was momentarily held up rounding the home turn. Near the 300m, A. Spinks, rider of Natural Elle, dropped his whip.

Race 2:

Class 3 Plate - 1666m
1st - Albuquerque; 2nd - Femme Lien; 3rd - Prince Leo

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Bryan Guy: “He was out for a full twelve months. Part of that was EI, but he injured his front legs and was put out in the paddock for all that time. So he hasn’t done a bad job here. Third run back. He did alright over 1200m first-up. It was a good run when only coming up a short-head shy last time over 1350m. Here he stepped up to 1666m which suited him perfectly. It doesn’t show it in the race-book, but if you go back far enough you’ll see he won his Maiden at this track over 1600m – and came home by twelve lengths!

Winner price fluctuation: 2.25 out to 2.40.
Favourite price fluctuation: 1.80 in to 1.70 (Prince Leo).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Prince Leo (B. Evans) threw its head up as the start was effected, losing ground. Near the 600m, Swift Leo (P. Hammersley) shifted out and in doing so made heavy contact with Prince Leo (B. Evans) on several occasions, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced for a short distance.

Race 3:

Maiden Div 1 Handicap - 1200m
1st - The Boogie Man; 2nd - Kbenrenrun; 3rd - Legal River

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Lindsay Gough: “The owners bought him as a yearling so it’s been a long wait for them to get him to the racetrack. He had a cut on his pastern and it bothered him and bothered him. Every-time we brought him back it seemed as if it would tear a little bit again until you could see quite deep scar tissue. He had a jump out at one stage and finished second last. We also had to re-school him at the barriers so it has taken a long time to get him right. He ran second in a trial – he could have won that trial - prior to this start so we knew we were on the right track. Did everything fine today so it’s a late start, but a good start.”

Winner price fluctuation: 3.00 out to 4.00.
Favourite price fluctuation: 2.60 in to 2.70 (Calypso Moon).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Moxie Mulroy (R. Wiggins), Kingaroo (B. Thomson) and Mr Gormsby (J. Bowditch) were all slow to begin. Near the 1100m, Calypso Moon (B. Evans), which had a tendency to over-race during the early and middle stages, was hampered and forced to steady to avoid the heels of Precious Girl (A. Spinks), which shifted out. Approaching the 300m, Precious Girl (A. Spinks) had to be steadied when tightened for room to the inside of Buena Chava (D. Barron), which shifted in under pressure. D. Barron, rider of Buena Chava, was reprimanded in relation to this incident. Buena Chava (D. Barron), Tomiruf (D. Green) and Kbenrenrun (R. McMahon) raced wide throughout. Precious Girl lost its near-fore plate in running.
Stewards opened an inquiry into the handling of Calypso Moon, particularly during the early and middle stages. After taking evidence from apprentice B. Evans and trainer S. Dwyer, it was established that due to the horse's tendency to over-race, Mr Dwyer instructed B. Evans not to excessively pressure the gelding during the early stages, however to take up a forward position if possible and not to make his run too early. Stewards accepted the explanation as to why B. Evans failed to improve his position from the 600m when there appeared an opportunity to do so. The instructions were confirmed by Mr Dwyer.

Race 4:

Maiden Div 2 Handicap - 1200m
1st -Runaway Fund; 2nd - Zeljko; 3rd - Macreedy

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Howard Wilson: “The horse goes on sale at the Magic Millions. I’ve had calls from as far afield as Darwin asking me why I’m selling the horse. I’m selling the horse because one of the owners owes me a lot of money. That’s the way we are going to sort out that problem.
“She’s a consistent horse. She’s been a bit unlucky that she’s taken this long to win, but she really deserved to get a result. I think she has picked up prize-money of some sort in all but four of her nineteen starts so this reward was due. Who knows what’s going to happen at the sale. I might buy her back.”

Jockey Luke Dittman: “She’s just a natural front-runner so you have just got to let her roll. She kept finding nicely. I could hear the other one (Zeljko) coming, but I couldn’t look to my left to see how close she was because I had the rein caught around my neck. That was probably a good thing because I kept my head down and pushed her out to the line.”

Winner price fluctuation: 4.00 out to 5.00.
Favourite price fluctuation: 1.80 in to 1.70 (Zeljko).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Euroquilo (J. McKinnon), which was extremely slow to begin, then raced awkwardly for a short distance. Trainer N. Doyle was advised that the horse must perform in a barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start. Zeljko (A. Coome) jumped away awkwardly, making heavy contact with the barrier partition and losing ground. Leaving the 900m, Just Larry (S. Galloway) and Proselyte (W. Clasohm) were both tightened for room between Classic Force (J. Bowditch), which shifted in, and Tickle ’Em (M. Palmer), which shifted out after improving on to the heels of Jodie’s Gift (J. Taylor). Near the 700m, Zeljko (A. Coome) had to be steadied off the heels of Jodie’s Gift (J. Taylor), which commenced to lose ground. Passing the 500m, Tickle ‘Em was forced to check when tightened for room between Classic Force (J. Bowditch), which shifted in momentarily, and the weakening Jelly Crystal (D. Green), which shifted out. Zeljko and Spin Kat (D. Tarrant), which were following, were both forced to steady and shifted out to avoid the heels of Tickle ‘Em. Tickle ‘Em hung out rounding the home turn. Spin Kat (D. Tarrant) raced wide throughout. Jelly Crystal (D. Green) lost near hind plate in running.

Race 5:

3yo & Up Class 1 Handicap - 800m
1st - Lethal Intent; 2nd - Aktoom Baby; 3rd - Missy Windy Weepu

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Macoun: “We knew she had the speed. That’s how she won her previous start at the Coast. It’s catch me if you can tactics. The last two times she’s been too good for them.”

Winner price fluctuation: 6.00 out to 6.50 in to 4.60.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Apprentice jockey L. Dittman was fined $100 for failing to claim his full allowance on Lethal Intent. Dream’s Coming (C. Dixon) jumped with its head in the air. Missy Windy Weepu (D. Griffin) jumped away awkwardly, making heavy contact with the barrier partition, and a short distance later raced awkwardly and lost ground. On jumping away, C. Small, rider of Kindred Spirit, lost the use of his off-side iron, placing him at a disadvantage for the first 100m of the event. Approaching the 600m, Missy Windy Weepu (D. Griffin) had to be steadied when racing between General Vandal (R. Wiggins), which shifted in, and Don’t You Worry (G. Geran), which shifted out. Missy Windy Weepu was held up for clear running rounding the home turn. See Me Thru (N. Thomas) and Dream’s Coming both raced wide throughout.

Race 6:

F&M Class 2 Handicap - 1100m
1st – Guissepino; 2nd – Beautiful; 3rd - Falzina

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley: “I thought she was a certainty if the ground stayed heavy. When they upgraded the track I had to back off a bit from that opinion, but I still thought we had a big chance. We had the claim and last time he ran third in a Class 3 in the city. The favourite had only won a Maiden and how often do they come straight out and win a Class 1. So I was quite confident.”

Apprentice jockey Mitchell Speers: “We were supposed to go forward, but here was too much early speed for her. She can pull quite hard but she went well today. She let down better than she has done before. She surprised me the way he she had her race won within a matter of strides when she quickened halfway up the straight. She’s only been wacking away in work so it was good to see her go so well here.”

Winner price fluctuation: 4.20 out to 5.50 out to 4.00
Favourite price fluctuation: 2.15 in to 1.80 out to 2.00 (Laravissante)

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Margot’s Image (L. Rolls), which jumped away awkwardly, was tightened for room shortly after the start between Guissepino (M. Speers), which was taken in by Siodee (W. Clasohm), which jumped away awkwardly, and Falzina (R. McMahon), which shifted out. Shortly after the start the saddle on Laravissante shifted back marginally. Mr G. Livermore, trainer of Too Good which performed very disappointingly, was advised that should the horse perform in a similar fashion again at a TAB meeting, consideration would be given to barring the horse from such meetings. A post race veterinary examination of Laravissante revealed the horse to be sore in the off foreleg. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised he would be required to produce a veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next race start.

Race 7:

CG&E Class 2 Handicap - 1100m
1st – Hurricaneprince; 2nd - New Journey; 3rd - Sweed

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Troy Hall: “Yeah, we’ve thought we’d get out a bit (from the Sunshine Coast) and see if we could pick up some Ipswich dollars. I’ve only had him for the five runs. He has yet to finish out of the first three for me. But we had to make a plan to get the win. Last time he carried 58kg in a Class 1. I knew that if we jumped a class (to Class 2) we’d get a drop in weight. I thought if we did that, and put a claiming apprentice in the saddle, we should just about be ready to win. He looked like he was going to win easy at one stage but that other one (New Journey) sure kicked back well and made a fight of it.”

Winner price fluctuation: 3.00 out to 3.50 out to 3.70
Favourite price fluctuation: 3.00 out to 3.10 (Snorkel)

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Red Wine Bwana was declared a late scratching at 7.45 am. Trainer Mr G. Farrell was fined $100 for failing to scratch Red Wine Bwana, which had a slow track bar, by the prescribed time. Donciano (S. Apthorpe) was slow to begin. Leaving the 200m, Donciano (S. Apthorpe) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with A Secret Kept. (B. Payne). Edward Bear (C. Isdale) and A Secret Kept raced wide throughout.

Race 8:

Class 1 Handicap - 1350m
1st - Revered Ruler; 2nd - Grungle; 3rd - My First Lady

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Darren Bell: “Tony (Pattillo) thought he might have gone too early the way they pressurised him in the finish but, if you look at the weights, they were entitled to be snapping at his heels. He was giving weight to all of the opposition (from 3.5kg to 8kg) so it was a pretty good effort all around.”
Winner price fluctuation: 1.60 out to 1.70 out to 2.10.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Char Innocent bucked shortly after the start and took no further part in the event. Trainer Mr M. Palmer was advised that Char Innocent must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. Revered Ruler (A. Pattillo) began awkwardly and shifted out, forcing Stefenick (O. Turpin) and Sittinbul (D. Griffin) out on to the hind quarters of My First Lady (C. Isdale). In this incident, Sittinbul was hampered and a Stefenick lost considered ground in this incident. Elite General (W. Clasohm) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. My First Lady and Real Future raced wide from the 700m. Stefenick (O. Turpin) was momentarily held up for clear running during the early stages of the straight.

EAGLE FARM REVIEW (WED, NOV 26)

A review of the meeting held at Eagle Farm on Wednesday, November 26.

STEWARTS SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT:
From QTC meeting, 26.11.08
Trainer B. Brown reported that Deception Bay had a slight pulse in its off foreleg and would now be spelled.
Trainer G. York reported that Nuclear Medicine had pulled up well following the event and, in his opinion, had been weighted to its best in that race. He further added Nuclear Medicine would gain improvement from the race.

From SCTC trials, 25.11.08
Trainer S. Dwyer pleaded guilty to a charge under AR59A(3), in that he presented a horse to trial at the on 25 November at Caloundra without first establishing its correct identity. Mr Dwyer was fined $500.

Race 1:

Maiden Plate - 2242m
1st – Don Vito; 2nd - Jouer Le Jeu; 3rd - Tyrconnell

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tony Sears: “I think the extra ground made the difference. He only lost by a nose and a neck in his two runner-up finishes. They were over 2000m and 2100m and he appreciated the longer trip here. He’ll run all day. He’ll run 2600m. He’ll take a break now. He’s been up for a long time. He’ll go to the paddock tomorrow morning.”

Jockey Brad Pengelly: “He’s not a horse blessed with a lot of ability, but he has one thing in his favour and that is he’s a trier. He’ll keep trying for you and that is what got him home today. I mean it took forever to get there, but he stuck to it and got home in the last few strides. I don’t think he is going to rise to any great heights but it was good to get this win on the board.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Near the 500m, Biancool (J. Taylor) shifted out to improve and in doing so made contact with All The Jays (D. Griffin). Passing the 300m, Jouer Le Jeu (E. Wilkinson), when attempting to take a narrow run outside Arcangela (R. Wiggins) shifted out, making contact with the hind quarters of Biancool. When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Biancool, J. Taylor stated that the horse travelled well, however when placed under pressure on straightening failed to accelerate and, in his opinion, failed to handle the rain-affected track today. A post race veterinary examination of Biancool failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 2:

Maiden Handicap - 1400m
1st - Oigles; 2nd - Brokacanon; 3rd - Young Prince

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Stable spokesman Scott Morrisey: “He should have bolted in last time. He finished fourth and got third on protest. We expected him to do well here.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Brokacanon (S. Galloway) shifted in shortly after the start, making contact with Mr Nicholas (L. Rolls), which became unbalanced. Ugani Mor (J. Taylor) over-raced in the early stages. Young Prince (A. Coome) and Ugani Mor raced wide for the majority of the event. When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Brave Clang, Matthew Palmer stated that he had been instructed to position the horse midfield and was able to obtain a nice position. He added that Brave Clang travelled well in running, however when placed under pressure upon straightening, the gelding failed to respond to his riding and proved very disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of Brave Clang failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 3:

F&M Maiden Handicap - 1400m
1st - My Request; 2nd - Smartness; 3rd - Silver Tin

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Stable spokesman Scott Morrisey: “Her half-brother is a stakes placed runner, so it’s good for her to get the win on the board in terms of breeding.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Trainer L. Richardson was fined the sum of $100 for negligently presenting Silver Tin to the enclosure without blinkers which was part of its approved racing gear. At the 1200m, Alamo (C. McIver) commenced to over- race and shifted out when being restrained, taking Smartness (L. Rolls) out on to Justly Proud (M. Hellyer), which in turn shifted out, taking Molly Jo (Matthew Palmer) wider on the track. Nearing the 1000m, Molly Jo, which was over-racing, was crowded for room between Secret Sensation (R. Wiggins), which shifted in slightly when over-racing, and Justly Proud, which when also over-racing, shifted out away from Finding Hope (R. Goltz), which was over-racing as well. In this incident, Molly Jo blundered. Finding Hope, Justly Proud and Secret Sensation continued to over-race for some distance.
Approaching the 800m, Pleasure Shot (Michael Palmer) improved up on to the heels of Chi Chi Grande (A. Spinks) and had to be steadied. Finding Hope, which was following, was obliged to shift out to avoid that horse's heels. At the same stage, Alamo improved up on to the heels of My Request (C. Reith) and had to be steadied. Smartness and Secret Sensation, which were following, both had to be steadied as a consequence. My Request and Secret Sensation were then forced to race wide for the remainder of the race.

Race 4:

3yo Maiden Plate - 1200m
1st – Sharjah; 2nd - Age Of Heroes; 3rd - Rowland Princess

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin: “We not certain what happed with her last time.” (After finishing in the placings in her first three runs, Sharjah was punted to favourite in the previous start at Ipswich, but finished last.). “The only viable theory we came up with was that she must have hit herself. There is a spot in the running, about the 600m where she falters and nearly falls, and she was never going well after that. We took her back to the barriers and that, and there was nothing wrong. She’s worked well since, so really we can’t be certain what happened. We tried some gear changes here (blinkers and Norton bit) and they look like they helped. You just have to forget she went around the other day. This is her real form.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Gundy Son, which took charge of its rider during the preliminary and galloped a circuit of the track, was declared a late scratching by order of the stewards. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that an official warning was being placed on Gundy Son. A Pair Of Diamonds (E. Wilkinson) over- raced for a short distance near the 1000m. Nearing the 800m, A Pair Of Diamonds and Our Centurion (R. McMahon) were forced to race in restricted room to the inside of Age Of Heroes (D. Barron), which shifted in momentarily.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Social Cat, J. Bowditch stated that the horse began fairly and he was able to position the horse in the first half of the field as instructed. He added however that Social Cat was under pressure leaving the 600m and failed to respond to his riding upon straightening. Trainer P. Duff was unable to offer any explanation for the performance and undertook to report any abnormality to the stewards which may have had a bearing on today's performance. A post race veterinary examination of Social Cat failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of Sharjah as compared to its previous start, trainer B. Baldwin stated that following its disappointing performance he had his stable veterinary surgeon inspect the filly and he was unable to detect any abnormalities. Mr Baldwin further stated that he had afforded the filly 5 weeks between starts and felt this, along with the addition of blinkers and a Norton bit, may have contributed to the forward showing today. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 5:

Class 4 Handicap - 1800m
1st - Justin Case; 2nd - Spin Zero; 3rd - Latin Idol

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelly Schweida: “He really likes this track.” (Justin Case has now won twice, been placed second twice and third once in five starts at Eagle Farm). He’s been running against a fair class of horse as well. He beat Bugsytwoshoes in his Maiden win and Bugsytwoshoes came out and won at a Saturday meeting here. He was well ridden by Chris (Reith). He waited and held him up for a run which is the way I wanted it to go.”

Jockey Chris Reith: “He settled very well and we had a easy run early. At the top of the straight I was pretty confident. I just needed to find the run and we got that by shifting out. He does need to be given a little bit of space which is why he likes this track and he did take his time getting going, but he finished off well.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Greenfinder (Matthew Palmer) raced wide for the majority of the event. Jockey M. Paget was reprimanded for the amount of whip he used on Bearhart Lad in the straight.
Aquaracer, which compounded from a point leaving the 600m, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities

Race 6:

Class 5 Handicap - 1200m
1st – Simplex; 2nd - Prince Lionheart; 3rd - Chabeli

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Brad Pengelly: “It was a good run first-up. You look at her. She is still on the big side and she should take a lot of benefit out of this run.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, jockey L. Herne made application to the stewards to have the Awase Ougi declared a non runner on the grounds it was not afforded a fair start. After taking evidence from L. Herne, starter Mr W. Shuck and viewing the official patrol video of the race, stewards were satisfied that Awase Ougi which reared as the gates were released, was afforded every opportunity to jump with the field and therefore declared the horse a starter. She’s A Mountain (L. Rolls) was fractious in the barriers and lost considerable ground at the start. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate for She’s A Mountain prior to its next race start. Go Sequalo (S. Scriven) also jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
L. Herne, rider of Awase Ougi, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1000m she allowed her mount to shift in, dictating the line of Miss Twist (M. Radecker), resulting in Miss Twist shifting in, tightening the running of Matzumi (C. Reith), resulting in Matzumi having to be steadied and losing its rightful running. L. Herne was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 26 November, and to expire at midnight, 7 December 2008. Chabeli (R. McMahon) over-raced in the early stages. Comic Echo (P. Hammersley) and Awase Ougi (L. Herne) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 7:

Class 3 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Teary Eyed; 2nd - Pyramids; 3rd - Sebastien

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Shaun Dwyer: “It’s only his second run back and he likes the give in the ground. He’ll move on from here. Will get better than this.”

Jockey Jason Taylor: “He must be a full brother to a duck. He loved the going. Although I think he also goes well on good. I had a fair run early on then, coming into the home turn, I had to make a decision. I wanted to get to the outside but I wasn’t in a position to do so without possibly compromising my chances. I would have had to ease and switch around the heels of Funk Soul Brother to get to the outside early in the straight. I wasn’t happy doing that and chose instead to push forward on the inside and then find a way to ease out naturally on the way to the line. That worked out perfectly but, in the end, the way she let down I think she would have won even if I had eased off their heels, but I didn’t know that at the time.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Near the 300m, Eye Eye Silver (K. Cunningham) had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room between Costa Mucho (D. Tanti) and Radio Star (A. Spinks), both of which shifted ground slightly. Funk Soul Brother (R. Goltz) and Big Macca (A. Erhart) raced wide for the majority of the event. Prior to and during the running of this event heavy rain fell. Following this event the track rating was downgraded to a heavy 9. Stewards ordered that the track rating for this race be declared a heavy 9 retrospectively.

Due to continuing heavy rain and water pooling on several sections of the track, stewards, after inspection, deemed the track unsafe for racing and therefore the final race was abandoned at 4.50 pm.
