GOLD COAST REVIEW (WED, MAR 11)

A review of the meeting held at the Gold Coast on Wednesday, March 11.

STEWARDS SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT EXTRACT:
As K. Banks was injured stewards permitted rider changes as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
* Kristy Banks recovered in time to ride the Darryl Gollan trained Redibis to victory in the Magic Millions 2yo Trophy at Rockhampton the day after the Gold Coast meeting.

Race 1:

3yo & Up C,G & E Maiden Handicap - 1200m.
1st - Exolart; 2nd - Foxy Fred; 3rd - Northern Praise

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelly Schweida: “I never had him last prep. I gave him one start. Then I gelded him. We gelded him in-between runs because he was a bit naughty. We had to geld him because he was a bully, and as soon as another horses would get alongside him there would be a problem. He had a run the other day where he ran out of gas. He can handle the wet because he’s got a wet pedigree on the mother’s side. If he goes straight he’s alright. You’ll see in the replay, he wanted to run around a little bit, but as soon as he (Brad Stewart) put the stick away, he took off.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Monching (C. Reith) reared at the start and lost ground and was then obliged to race wide throughout the event. Irish Pub (App S. Stanbridge) was slow to begin. Gimme (App M. Speers) raced ungenerously in the early stages. Chubby (K. Purdy) raced wide throughout. Near the 500m Irish Pub improved onto the heels of Exolart on two occasions and had to be steadied. Near the 300m Exolart shifted out to improve and in doing so crowded the running of Gimme and Monching (C. Reith). Ciento Mambo (T. Treichel) which was following was hampered as a consequence.

Race 2:

3yo & Up F & M Maiden Handicap - 1200m.
1st - Mixell; 2nd - Quingilly; 3rd - Lemarac Lass

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelly Doughty: “The blinkers came off today. Look, she is really well bred out of the mother. She is very tiny. She probably is a little bit limited, but she’s been working very well this week, so we are actually quite excited about today.”(The volume of the vocal enthusiasm Doughty showed when calling her horse home from the grandstand vouched for that). We thought she’d like the wet track. Her family really liked it. She knuckled down beautifully at the end. It was great. It’s all good.”

Apprentice jockey Matthew Palmer: “It was our intention to go forward, but we got trapped a little bit wide. It wasn’t too detrimental in the end. We were deep, but she wasn’t over-working. She was running her race within herself. Look, she is just a small little thing and she was able to skip along across the top of the grass. She quickened well when I asked her. She did everything right. It would have been nice if we could have got one off the fence, but we got there. We got the toffees.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Foxysal (L. Cheshire) proved difficult to load. Trainer L. MacPherson was advised that Foxysal would require a further barrier certificate before racing again. Foxysal jumped in the air at the start and lost ground. Supervolito (L. Cassidy) and Quingilly (T. Treichel) were both tightened for room on jumping away between Durian (C. Reith) which shifted out and Salcanro (D. Tanti) which shifted in. In this incident Quigilly lost its rightful running. Fatal Femme Fatale (B. Stewart) and Spanish Silver (D. Craven) were a little slow to begin. Supervolito (L. Cassidy) over-raced in the early stages. Mixell (App M. Palmer), Supervolito and Spanish Silver all raced wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of Mixell trainer K. Doughty stated that in her opinion all of Mixell’s previous runs had had some merit and at the filly's most recent start it had raced keenly in blinkers and only tired over the latter stages of the event. K. Doughty further added that the removal of blinkers for today's event and that the horse is bred to handle rain affected tracks may have assisted in today's forward showing. Stewards noted her explanation.
A post race veterinary examination of Durian failed to reveal any abnormality. A post race veterinary examination of Quingilly revealed the filly had sustained a laceration to the off side fore-leg.

Race 3:

2yo QTIS Maiden Plate - 900m.
1st - Fab Fevola; 2nd - Huckleberry Dane; 3rd - Beautiful Nicola

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Bryan Guy: “I thought he was unbeatable. I thought he would just win. His work has been great. I thought he would just be too good for them. He missed the kick a little bit. Larry (Cassidy) had to use him a bit early, and, because of that, I think Larry thought he just had to sit and wait a little bit longer. I think he is a good horse. I think 1200m will suit him better. Like he’s run 53.09 on a heavy track and 34.72 coming home. There is a $100 000, Magic Millions race here on March 28. We’ll be looking at that.”

Jockey Larry Cassidy: “He did a couple of things wrong. Like, he went up in the air when the gates opened. That’s why I waited in the straight. Because he went up in the air, I had to do a little bit of work in the first part, because he’s very fast. I knew I would be found wanting in the last little bit, so I just wanted to nurse him, nurse him, nurse him. When the other horse came at me I had to do something on him. It was a gutsy win. I thought it was a very good win actually.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Fantastic Four (C. Whiteley), Big Boori (B. Stewart) and Snap Hook (L. Cheshire) were all slow to begin. Fab Fevola (L. Cassidy) reared as the start was affected and lost ground. Mark ‘N’ Spin (B. Pengelly) shifted out at the start making contact with Huckleberry Dane (S. Scriven). Shortly after the start Swell (C. Reith) shifted in and away from Czarwho (D. Craven) severely crowding the running of Last Love (App L. Rolls) and Fragrant Star (J. Bowditch). Near the 800m Czarwho shifted in and away from Jillilikes (M. Paget) taking Swell in onto Vencedor (T. Treichel), which in turn shifted in onto Andy Said (A. Pattillo), resulting in that horse making heavy contact with Big Boori. In this incident Swell, Andy Said and Vencedor all had to be checked. As P. Strong the trainer of Czarwho undertook to trial the horse before starting again stewards did not take any further action against the horse. Snap Hook commenced to lay in near the 600m and as a result had to be steadied from the heels of Fantastic Four and Vencedor. Huckleberry Dane and Mark ‘N’ Spin both raced wide for the majority of the event. Fab Fevola shifted ground outwards under pressure over the concluding stages.

Race 4:

Maiden Plate - 1800m.
1st - Sydney Or The Bush; 2nd - Hooray Tobey; 3rd - Finding Neverland

WINNER FEEDBACK:
The Alan Bailey trained Sydney Or The Bush gave his followers a winning payout this time, making no mistake as he easily outgunned his rivals. Jockey Chris Whitely took one look as he went past the leader at the top of the straight, before letting the impressive looking chestnut chase away unchallenged to secure the first victory of his career. The gelding had previously proved costly to follow, finishing as a beaten favourite on several occasions (he was a close-up runner-up in his previous two starts), but he did give a hint here of what he might be capable of with a little more education and when caught in a galloping mood.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Near the 400m Hooray Tobey (L. Cassidy) had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room between Dolphin Quest (D. Craven) and Natane (A. Spinks), which lost ground when tiring.

Race 5:

Fillies & Mares Class 1 Handicap - 1400m.
1st - Starsplash; 2nd - Way Too Hot; 3rd - Dubai Belle

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Chris Whiteley bided his time early on the Alan Bailey trained filly, but, once he asked her to extend in the home straight, the ‘race-over’ sign went up pretty quickly. The three-year-old raced home unchallenged to score her second successive win and so maintain her unbeaten record this preparation. The result completed a race-to race double for the Alan Bailey / Chris Whiteley combination.

STEWARDS:
No report.

Race 6:

Apprentice Cup National Series Class 3 Handicap - 1200m.
1st - Worth Doing; 2nd - Laurels; 3rd - Dr Chicago

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelly Doughty (who completed a double on the day): “I’ve only had the horse for two runs and two wins so we’re very happy with our success with him – and having a double today is even better. I pulled the jockey’s name out of the hat and when they told me he was a Tasmanian I said, that’s my luck, they follow me everywhere.”

Apprentice jockey Darryl Horner (Jnr): “Look, the horse showed a good turn of foot coming out of the barrier. We went quite hard for the first furlong. After about a furlong-and-a-half the pace settled. A horse then came up on my outside, which was good. It kept me on the bridle. Turned for home ... showed a really good turn of foot to get away from them a bit. From there we just toughed it out.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
App L. Dillon the rider of Epicred was dislodged during its preliminary in the mounting enclosure resulting in him suffering a harmless fall. The start of this race was delayed due to Miz Winfrey (App M. Speers) having to be resaddled and Cyclone Larry (App M. Hughes) having to undergo a veterinary inspection after being kicked at the barrier. Laurels (App M. Palmer) and Magic Rocker (App V. Schubert) both lost their position shortly after the start when severely crowded for room between Miz Winfrey and Worth Doing (App D. Horner Jnr), both of which shifted ground. Dr Chivago (App O. Turpin) had to be steadied shortly after the start when tightened for room between Stormy Cruz (App J. Brown) and Innocenzio (App B. Knobel). Leaving the 1100m Mighty Canny (App T. Neve) and Stormy Cruz (App J. Brown) were both tightened for room and had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Worth Doing which shifted in. App D. Horner Jnr the rider of Worth Doing was reprimanded for this incident. Near the 900m Mighty Canny made heavy contact with the running rail and as a result shifted out making contact with the hind quarters of Stormy Cruz causing both horses to become unbalanced and lose ground. Cyclone Larry and Miz Winfrey which were following were hampered as a consequence. Laurels was forced to race wide from a point leaving the 900m. Near the 800m Epicred lost ground and as a result Laurels improved up onto that horse's heels and had to be steadied and shift out. Run The Course (App S. Bogenhuber) which was following was inconvenienced as a consequence. A post race veterinary examination of Miz Winfrey which raced wide for the majority of the event and compounded over the concluding stages to finish a distant last revealed the mare to have suffered a laceration to the gum line. Trainer of Miz Winfrey K.T. Smith expressed his disappointment in the mare's performance and undertook to advise stewards of any condition that may come to light in the days following the event, which may explain Miz Winfrey’s performance.

Race 7:

Gold Coast Quality Stakes - 1200m.
1st - Hard To Catch; 2nd - Vocalic; 3rd - Chevron Island

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Pat Duff: “He does like the wet, but I was just a little bit worried about how wet that track was. But Brad (Stewart) knows that horse so well. He has won first-up before. I wasn’t certain - I couldn’t remember - but my jockey reminded me that he had done it before. He is a wonderful horse. Any horse that has won $1 million in Queensland is very good. I’ve left him in as a first acceptor in the Doncaster hoping it’s rainy as hell down there. I’ve still got to make those decisions. Right now I will just wait and see. There is a race at Eagle Farm in two weeks. I’ve even given a bit of thought to taking him to New Zealand. There is a race over there which is run at Ellerslie over Easter time. It’s a feature race over a mile. It’s a good race for something like $400 000. So we have got options and, of course, we will be looking forward to a race Eagle Farm in June.” (Hard To Catch finished second, losing by the narrowest of margins, in the 2008 running of the Stradbroke).

Trainer Pat Duff (speaking at the trophy presentation ceremony): “I certainly want to thank my owners, the Tutt family and all of the other connections including my wife who was the one who pushed me to buy Hard To Catch. He was passed in. I liked the horse and I said to my wife that he’d been passed in. She said, if you like him at $20 000 and they want $25 000 – you think he is worth $20 000, go back and give them 25 000. I’m very happy that she did that. Most of all I want to thank Brad Stewart. I think Brad is one of the coolest riders I’ve seen. He is a great rider and he is riding on the crest of a wave at the moment."

Jockey Brad Stewart (who rode his fifth winner in two meetings): “He knows where the line is. He has been winning good races like that for a number of years now. The way he’s going he’s shown he still has a lot more in him. He can be a bit of a tricky horse to ride when he draws a bad barrier – which he did here. He didn’t have a good barrier today. When we balanced up in the straight I knew he was going to be there somewhere. I was just hoping we were going to get there in time.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Pay Me (A. Pattillo) was tightened for room at the start between Bitabiff (J. Bowditch) and Vocalic (B. Pengelly), which shifted in. Approaching the 400m Chevron Island (M. Paget) shifted out in an attempt to gain clear running making contact with Pay Me. Leaving the 400m Yass River shifted out taking Watchyerback (S. Galloway) out onto Hard To Catch (B. Stewart), which in turn shifted out onto Pay Me. Masai Pride was tightened for room near the 150m between Bitabiff and Yass River (C. Reith), which shifted in under pressure. C. Reith the rider of Yass River was reprimanded. Masai Pride (L. Cassidy) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 8:

C, G & E Class 1 Handicap - 1400m.
1st - Charter Boat; 2nd - Godly; 3rd - Our Heart

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tracy Green: “He’ll go out now. He is straight out today. There is a float waiting to take him straight out – and he’ll get gelded. I’m going to bring him back for either the Coloundra Guineas or the Grafton Guineas. Take him for a trip away. He has learnt a lot, you know, since that first start when he was so erratic. We’ve been stepping him slowly up in distance every start. I think he’ll be alright over a mile.
“He was a bargin buy. I bought him at the Magic Millions for $1500. He’s by Admiralty who is the sire of Mr Hornblower who has done so well for us. That’s why we bought him. Not that he looked too much like him. He was butt ugly. I looked at Les and said, do you really want to buy this? He said he is by Admiralty – I’m having him! He has grown into a nice horse, but we’ve had a lot of trouble with his legs, maturity-wise. So we’ve been waiting and waiting ... for something like two years. God, every-time he came in, he’d be in for six weeks and then out for three months. Then back again ... and you knew you had to sit because he was full of this ability, and you couldn’t do anything about it. Character-wise, yeah, he’s a beautiful horse in the stable, but he’s got another brain at the moment – you know what teenage boys are like. But we’ll deal with when he goes out this time.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Our Heart (S. Galloway) which was slow to begin was tightened for room shortly after between Tread Lightly (D. Griffin) and Charter Boat (B. Pengelly) both of which shifted ground. Timecall (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout. Approaching the 200m Godly (J. Bowditch) shifted out making contact with Charter Boat. Our Heart was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight. A post race veterinary examination of Forbes (App L. Rolls), which tailed off a distant last, failed to reveal any abnormality.
A post race veterinary examination of Engee Em Grand (A. Spinks) revealed the horse to be mildly lame in the near fore leg. Trainer D. Lawlor will be contacted and advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness will be required prior to its next race start. B. Pengelly rider of Charter Boat returned to scale in excess of 1/2 kilo overweight. After taking evidence from both jockey B. Pengelly and trainer T. Green it was established that Ms Green had added gear after jockey B. Pengelly had weighed out. T. Green pleaded guilty to a charge under AR118A and fined the sum of $100.00.

IPSWICH REVIEW (MON, MAR 09)

A review of the meeting held at Ipswich on Monday, March 9.

Race 1:

Class 1 Plate - 2150m
1st - Cinquacasino; 2nd - French Venture; 3rd - Kaadeema

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tim Gillespie: “I like Jana (Piper). She’s always ridden good races for me. She rode a very confident race. The horse been racing with no luck whatsoever. We’ve been racing him in Maidens and just keep getting squashed up early ... and dropped out ... and can’t get a crack at them. We decided to put him up into a Class 1 today and he’s won that. He hasn’t been able to win a Maiden, but he’s won this. You take what you can get. He’s always been an out and out stayer. He’s a good horse to train. He’s happy to do anything with you. He gives you no problems really. The tongue tie came off today. We only put that on last week, but it didn’t help him so we took it off again.”

Apprentice jockey Jana Piper: “I wanted to lead, but I couldn’t get to the front. The one outside me had more pace, so I thought I’d box-seat behind it. If I couldn’t lead I thought box-seating would be the next best thing. But then they put the brakes on down the back and I was screaming at them to get going, but I just had to wait to get around them. I just sat on him till we straightened. I knew he has a good turn of foot because I’ve ridden him before. I knew I could just cruise around and then let go. We rode him back last time and he couldn’t make the ground up because I was back last. Today I wanted to be leading and they’ve done that to me. I’m in the middle of the race and I’m thinking, if I get beat on this, he (Tim Gillespie) is never going to put me on again. But the horse did the job in the straight and ran down the other one, so it all turned out well in the end.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Battle Of Kapyong (R. Goltz) was slow to begin. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, Cinquacasino (J. Piper) made the first turn awkwardly and had to be steadied from the heels of French Venture (J. Murphy). When the paced slackened near the 1400m, Cinquacasino shifted out to avoid the heels of Stardubai (M. Dorrington) and in doing so forced Kaadeema (L. Cheshire) wider on the track. Cinquacasino raced wide from the 700m. Near the 400m, Elate And Excite (M. Speers) was disappointed for a run and had to be steadied when racing between Battle Of Kapyong, which shifted out, and Kaadeema, which was taken in by Cinquacasino. A post race veterinary examination of Battle Of Kapyong failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the performance and handling of Stardubai. After taking evidence from jockey M. Dorrington and stable representative Mr P. Randal, stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date and time to be fixed to enable them to interview trainer Mr G. Teal.

Race 2:

3yo QTIS Maiden Plate - 800m
1st - Alphonse; 2nd - Binda Belle; 3rd - Karma Getya

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Ray Dart: “I thought he would put in a real good show. We were hoping he would jump a little bit better than he did. He come out really bad and sat back last. So he had a lot to do and his run a real good time. He is a half-brother to Quotes, another one that I’ve got that goes pretty good. He’s won five races, so we are hoping he measures up the same as the other bloke.”

Jockey Terry Treichel: “He’d done well first time out. I sort of wanted to be on the pace a bit quicker, but it didn’t work out that way. We got buffeted around a bit early. Coming around the corner ... it was just greenness, you know. He just sort of wanted to lay in. I got him out and then he wanted to lay out. But when I asked him he picked up the leaders very quickly and went past them in a flash. Once he got there, in front, he thought well this is enough, I’ve done my work, and he wanted to steady up. So he’s done quite well considering everything that went wrong for him. He got buffeted at the start, he was a first-starter and when things go wrong for first-starters they usually weaken out of it quite quickly. He’ll be alright.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Acting under the powers of AR178(e), stewards ordered the late withdrawal of Flirty Flossy at 12.15 pm following a report from the veterinary surgeon which indicated the horse had been medicated on course. After taking evidence from Dr M. Lenz and trainer Mr K. Deacon, stewards adjourned the inquiry pending the results of further analytical tests. Blood and urine samples were taken from Flirty Flossy.
Give It To Me (M. Palmer), which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly afterwards between Alphonse (T. Treichel) and Dodge County (C. Reith), which was taken in by Henson Park (R. Goltz), which jumped away awkwardly. The connections of Danangel (M. Speers), which commenced to hang out from approaching the 500m, were advised that the horse must satisfactorily barrier trial prior to its next race start. Near the 500m, Joleka Dancer (M. Paget) was momentarily tightened for room to the inside of Alphonse (T. Treichel), which shifted in. Sequina (K. Banks) was inclined to hang out from approaching the 400m. Passing the 200m, Karma Getya (B. Stewart) shifted in, making heavy contact with Binda Belle (S. Bogenhuber), causing both horses to become unbalanced.

Race 3:

3yo & Up G&E Maiden Handicap - 1350m
1st - Reining Chief; 2nd - Proselyte; 3rd - Nice Looker

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Andrew Cowell: “The news is that he is for sale ... could suit someone in the country. He’s been unlucky twenty-four times prior to today. He’s always drawn wide barriers and he’s always run good races and he’s always had an excuse. We had the small field today. Everything went right.”

Jockey Terry Treichel (who completed a double on the day): “It began very well and I didn’t really want to be where I ended up. I sort of wanted to be back a bit, but, because it began so well and showed good speed I went forward and thought I’d take a sit off. I sat back off the leader a little bit and let him do a bit of work. It was sort of struggling coming to the corner. He just picked it up pretty well and went on to win by three-and-a-quarter lengths or something. It wasn’t a very strong field all the same, but it’s a win”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Aljomaka Bay (A. Badger) was slow to begin. Nice Looker (S. Holcombe) reared as the start was effected, losing considerable ground. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding regarding its barrier manners. Near the 1000m, Bulky Boy (R. Goltz) improved on to the heels of Reigning Chief (T. Treichel) and had to be steadied. Affidavit (R. Hinricks), which was following, also commenced to over-race and a short distance later had to be steadied from the heels of Bulky Boy. Waite On (M. Dorrington) raced wide in the early stages. Near the 800m, Bulky Boy had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Waite On, which shifted in. Aljomaka Bay, which was inclined to lay out, shifted out, making contact with Waite On (M. Dorrington) leaving the 400m and on a number of occasions in the home straight. A. Badger, rider of Aljomaka, was reprimanded and advised to stop riding and straighten her mounts in similar circumstances.
Jockey M. Dorrington, rider of Waite On, was found guilty of improper riding under the provisions AR137(a), in that near the 50m he raised his right elbow towards apprentice A. Badger, rider of Aljomaka Bay, in an attempt to make contact with Miss Badger, and in doing so made contact with that rider. Jockey Dorrington was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 3 months, to commence at midnight, 14 March and to expire at midnight, 14 June 2009.

Race 4:

3yo & Up F&M Maiden Plate - 1350m
1st - Beautiful Moon; 2nd - Flawless; 3rd - Craiglea Kara

WINNER FEEDBACK:
The Michael Nolan trained Beautiful Moon tracked the leaders early on, getting the run of the race until the home turn. On straightening, jockey Brad Stewart switched the grey out into the clear and asked the filly to go after the favourite Flawless, who had got first run on the field. Beautiful Moon responded with a steady, sustained finishing effort which carried her past the leader and on to a clear-cut victory.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Shaqino (D. Barron) was slow to begin. My Space (M. Palmer) was tightened for room on jumping away between Ceethesunrise (R. Faehr) and Flawless (M. Paget), which shifted out. Ceethesunrise raced wide from the 600m. A post race veterinary examination of Bow Kitty, which compounded badly from the 400m, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 5:

3yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1010m
1st - Wild Wilbur; 2nd - Sweet Magic; 3rd - Al Reem

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Lakey: “He’s been out for ten months. He fractured his splint bone in his back leg. I’m not sure if he did it in a race in his only start (at Esk). Anyway, he had to go and have an operation and he was probably three months off or something like that. The surgeons were pretty happy that it was all going to be good. We thought he went alright, but after the time out he came back and really started hitting his straps. I guess it might have been a blessing in disguise because he wasn’t that good before ... or maybe it was just natural improvement. He was just very green before. He is out of a very good mare and is by Desert Prince. I think she won up to 1400m. Guy Walter trained her and I think she won a couple of Listed race, so she was a pretty good mare.”

Jockey Brad Stewart: “There’s not much I can tell you. Michael (Lakey) said it went pretty good – and it did. There really is not much to report except that it was a trouble-free run and it was a pretty comfortable win.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Bellaciano (M. Milford) and Morgan Factor (A. Merritt) were slow to begin. Leaving the 200m, Al Reem (M. Paget) shifted out, making contact with Wild Wilbur (B. Stewart).

Race 6:

CG&E Class 1 Handicap - 1010m
1st - Tie Hand; 2nd - Burrows; 3rd - So Shall This

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer James Glare: “He was going to win last time. He carried 57kg in Open company, a Class 1, and he is only a three-year-old. He ran into a soft patch halfway down the straight which spoilt his chances. Today he was on top of the ground, which suits him a lot better. The same jockey (Brad Stewart) rode him last start. I just said I’d leave it to you, just as long as keep him for the last furlong. He needs to be saved for the last furlong.”

This result gave jockey Brad Stewart a race-to-race treble on the day.

Just a word of praise for jockey Julie Murphy, who finished second aboard Burrows in his race. Burrows was more than a little fractious in the mounting yard. When Murphy was legged-up the stirred-up chestnut responded by fly-jumping and slamming Murphy into the ground with a sickening thump, just metres from a spot where spectators lined the parade ring. The incident highlighted what a tough profession race riding is and also underlined just how tough most professional jockeys are. Within minutes Murphy was back on her feet, then back in the saddle, then back in the race where, in spite of the fact that Burrows suffered interference on more than one occasion, Murphy refused to back down and she brought Burrows flying with a spirited late flourish to score and eye-catching runner-up finish.

That praise does give way to concern on another associated matter. The speed at which an accident or possible injury is communicated to the trained medical staff on duty and the speed of their response is surely a race-day aspect that needs to be improved at all race-tracks. It would seem only logical that the mounting yard activities, where the congestion of horses and riders can prove to be dangerous, should be monitored by the track doctor as a matter of is a course, so he, or she, is available immediately if an incident should occur. It should be written in and highlighted as part of the job description. The doctor should not have to be summoned from somewhere else (particularly over the public address system) while non-trained personnel comfort the fallen rider. Once the horses are on the track itself, that onus of observation should fall on, amongst others, the paramedics on duty. I am loath to criticise them because of the general, good work they do, but, on the aspect of speed, surely if there are two paramedics, they shouldn’t both have to first stop and take time picking up their medical kits before strolling over to the scene. I would have thought one paramedic should get to the injured rider as soon as possible, while the other follows with their emergency kit. I do not know who is responsible for establishing that sort of protocol. I do know the matter needs attention.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The start of this race was delayed after J. Murphy was dislodged from Burrows in the saddling enclosure. Following an examination by the club's doctor, J. Murphy was cleared to ride in this event. Approaching the 900m, Burrows (J. Murphy) was tightened for room and had to be steadied when racing between Jackpot (S. Scriven) and Tie Hand (B. Stewart), which shifted in. Near the 700m, Burrows (J. Murphy) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Jackpot (S. Scriven), which shifted in. Leaving the 100m, Jackpot had to be checked from the heels of So Shall This (B. Pengelly) after attempting a tight run between that horse and The Hugginator (N. Thomas), both of which shifted ground. Jockey S. Scriven, rider of Jackpot, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. A post race veterinary examination of Bionic Rock failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 7:

F&M Class 1 Handicap - 1010m
1st - County Tale; 2nd - Shooting Stars; 3rd - Crazy Woman

WINNER FEEDBACK:
The Kelso Wood trained filly County Tale resumed here after being put out for five months (in part because of a stone-bruise problem). The filly, who was competently ridden by Brad Pengelly, dominated both the betting and the race itself, never having a single moment of concern as she surged clear when it mattered most to win to score with plenty in hand.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
County Tale (B. Pengelly) and Don’t Touch The Hat (D. Barron) came together on jumping away. Kuwani Mocha (N. Thomas) jumped away awkwardly, making contact with the barrier partition. Dancing Royal (T. Treichel) blundered on jumping away and lost ground. As a result, T. Treichel lost his off-side iron and was unable to regain the use of it again until near the 800m. Trading (D. Griffin) was momentarily held up for clear running near the 300m. Near the 50m, H. Hamada, rider of Celestafy, was obliged to stop riding when in restricted room to the inside of Crazy Woman (W. Clasohm), which shifted in. Don’t Touch The Hat (D. Barron) and Trading raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Don’t Touch The Hat revealed the mare to be sore in both forelegs. Trainer B. Sutton was instructed to provide a veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next race start.

Race 8:

Class 3 Handicap - 1350m
1st- Lions And Dragons; 2nd - Aurtobe; 3rd - Cat Dazzle

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Laurie Manzelmann (who was greeting his third winner in two days following his double success at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday): “He’s been very, very sore – in the feet. So I gave him a lot of time off (four months). He had a run back last time and we stepped him up in distance here. It’s a really pleasing result.”

Lions And Dragons was partnered by jockey Anthony Merritt, who was part of Manzelmann’s winning double at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday where he also took out the last race, on that occasion, riding Brief Intention.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Cat Dazzle (S. Bogenhuber) was slow to begin. Taj Paru (M. Speers) jumped away awkwardly, making contact with Ching Hoi Boy (D. Green) Approaching the 1200m, Diamondsaucash (W. Clasohm) was momentarily tightened for room and had to be steadied when racing between Base Dancer (C. Reith) and Rory’s Rapper (N. Thomas), which was taken in by Lions And Dragons (A. Merritt), which shifted in. A. Merritt, rider Lions And Dragons, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Nearing the 800m, Aurtobe (M. Palmer) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Mr Braveheart (A. Spinks), which shifted in. As a result, Diamondsaucash, which was following, shifted out to avoid the heels of Aurtobe (M. Palmer) and in doing so forced Rory’s Rapper (N. Thomas) wider on the track. Cat Dazzle made the home turn awkwardly. Taj Paru (M. Speers) was disappointed for a run over the final 200m between Aurtobe (M. Palmer) and Ching Hoi Boy (D. Green) and when endeavouring to obtain clear running bumped Ching Hoi Boy on several occasions. Rory’s Rapper (N. Thomas) raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Mr Braveheart, which compounded badly in the straight and was pulled up shortly after the winning post, failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards questioned jockey A. Spinks regarding the performance and he expressed concerns with the welfare of the horse in the straight and elected to ease the horse out of the race. Trainer's representative Mr D. Miller was advised that Mr Braveheart must be scoped prior to and following a satisfactory barrier trial prior to its next race start.

SUNSHINE COAST REVIEW (SUN, MAR 08)

A review of the meeting held at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, March 8.

STEWARDS SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT EXTRACT:
R. Stewart will be interviewed as to the reasons for him failing to fulfil his engagements.

Race 1:

QTIS 3yo Handicap - 1000m
1st - Craiglea Falcon; 2nd - Love Hit Me; 3rd - Barmazal

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Peter Fleming: “He’s got no real speed so we were always going to ride him back at bit. He won at Doomben over 1350m, so he’s better suited over 1200m or 1300m ... but being first-up over 1000m, he handled it well. He won in similar fashion at Doomben. He came from last, the jockey dropped the whip and he came home down the outside. He knows where the line is. He’s a typical Favelon. He’s just had a few feet problems, but we’ve fixed that now. She was back to normal shoes today.”

Jockey Garry Baker: “He came from a long way back and hit the line very strong. A think he is probably a better horse ridden that way. He relaxed beautifully and then he ran right away from over the last furlong. When he gets further he’s going to win more for sure.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Nonethewiser, which was fractious in the barriers was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon at the start and cleared to race. Spirit Express, which was in the adjoining barrier, was removed from the barriers, examined and cleared to start. A warning was issued to the connections of Kalinga Echo, which proved difficult to load. Trainer T. Hall was advised that he would be required to provide a further barrier certificate for Love Hit Me, which was fractious in the barriers. Spirit Express (M. Paget) was slow to begin. Angel Force (A. Spinks) began awkwardly and shifted out, bumping Esbend (M. Speers). A. Spinks reported that Angel Force was inclined to hang out throughout the event, placing him at a disadvantage. Esbend (M. Speers) raced wide throughout. N. Thomas, rider of Nonethewiser, was cautioned regarding his whip use on that colt in the straight.

Race 2:

3yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1600m
1st - Mark One; 2nd - Top Resource; 3rd - Montaperti

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Troy Hall: “It’s been a dry spell, I tell you. Not having as many runners, you see. It slows you up. We wanted him to go back. I thought he would be in front of a couple, but one got in his face and pushed him back further that one or two lengths. Damian (Browne) just kept him relaxed ... put him to sleep. He produced a very nice run home. He’s been a real slow in maturing. We’ve just been maturing him slowly but surely. We bought him as a stayer as a yearling and it looks like we’re heading in the right direction. He is going to be a much better horse as a four or five-year-old.”

Jockey Damian Browne: “They went very hard early and with that my fellow, he’s a colt, he probably switches off a little too much. They might think of gelding him. Even up the straight when he was chasing the leader he still wanted to run around and just do things that colt’s do, you know – what young boys do. I think he’ll make a nice horse later on.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
After leaving the 1200m, Biscay’s Best (M. Paget) was inclined to lay in during the middle stages of the event and continued to do so for the remainder of the race. Whydidyouleaveme (A. Pattillo) was held up for clear running on entering the straight. A. Merritt, rider of Ausbred Icon, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that at approximately the 300m he permitted his mount to shift out around the heels of All Join Hands (N. Thomas) when insufficiently clear of Maningrey (G. Baker), resulting in that horse having to be restrained to avoid the heels of Ausbred Icon and losing its rightful running. A. Merritt was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 9 March and to expire at midnight, 21 March. Over the final 100m, Biscay’s Best (M. Paget) commenced to lay in and was reluctant to take a run to the inside of Top Resource (O. Turpin). Over the concluding stages, Montaperdi(K. Pope) was tightened for room between Top Resource (O. Turpin) and Mark One (D. Browne), both of which shifted marginally and as a result shifted out in order to improve.

Race 3:

Maiden Plate - 1200m
1st - Bohica Baby; 2nd - Costigan; 3rd - Renegade Dancer

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Glenn Clunes: “He bled in his second last run prior to this. I didn‘t have him then. He bled, but he’s always shown a bit of ability. He’s form is not hopeless. So we bought him. Brought him back slowly and then just give him a run last time and this topped him off. He wasn’t stopping at the line. I think he might run a mile. He’ll improve.”

Apprentice jockey Jana Piper: “The young girl who is associated with horse broke her leg the day before yesterday and she is in hospital. She’s a track-work rider and she rang me up this morning nearly in tears because she couldn’t be here and she just said, ‘do your best, do your best.’ So I know I’ve made somebody happy. The horse has had a few problems and I just wanted to save him for the last bit to give him his best chance. He wanted to win today. It worked out. Another fifty yards and it wouldn’t have been so good.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Craiglea Marilyn, which was unable to be loaded into the barriers, was declared a late scratching by order of the stewards at 2.07 pm Trainer T. Button was advised that he would be required to provide a further barrier certificate for Craiglea Marilyn prior to its next race start. On jumping away, Craiglea Rocket (J. Jones) was tightened for room between Gurkhas (A. Spinks) and Bohica Baby (J. Piper), both of which shifted ground. Renegade Dancer (M. Radecker) over-raced during the early stages. Rounding the home turn, Diamond Dancer (A. Pattillo) hung out, forcing Nikki Cugat (R. Mason) wider on the track. Nikki Cugat, Diamond Lane (K. Pope) and Diamond Dancer (A. Pattillo) raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Diamond Dancer revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration to the near hind hock.

Race 4:

Class 1 Handicap - 850m
1st - Rapid Tricia; 2nd - Wonkavator; 3rd - Questify

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Bruce Hill: “She’s got her own way. She likes her own way. Can be a real bitch. So we’ve learnt to work around her. She has got ability. The heavy going didn’t help her last time (over 1200m, but we still just trying to work out her right distance. So we threw it in today (over 850m) hoping to learn more. But, like I say, there is no doubting the fact she has got ability.”

Apprentice jockey Matthew Palmer: “The filly has got a mind of her own. She has been a real handful at the track. I know that personally. The first start I won on her she threw me on the way back to the enclosure at Ipswich. So she can be a bit tardy, but Bruce (Hill) is doing a very good job with here. In the race itself she isn’t bad at all. She’s good in fact and she is very consistent, but the biggest thing is she is just tough. She does everything you ask her to. She’ll go through her grades.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Nano (J. Murphy) was slow to begin. After leaving the 300m, Wonkavator (M. Speers) shifted in of its own accord and made contact with the running rail on three occasions. J. Murphy, rider of Nano, was cautioned regarding her whip use on that mare in the straight. Anglingforsuccess (R. Hancock) raced wide throughout.

Race 5:

Class 4 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Eddie Rapido; 2nd - Star Touch; 3rd - French Move

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Laurie Manzelmann: “I’ve had the horse for four runs. I got the horse from my friend in Sydney, Wade Slinkard. We’ve probably got over one hundred horses off him. We’ve been with him for twenty years. Wade is a very honest horse-dealer. A very honest man! When I got him, I was confident enough to run him first-up over 1500m. He finished second there. He run into a good one in Encosta Tzsyu. After that he had a bit of bad luck and then a wet track. I saw this race up here and I thought I’d bring him back in distance to freshen him up a bit. I wasn’t worried about the distance.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Star Touch (G. Baker) over-raced during the early stages. Passing the 1000m, Subtle Glance (M. Speers) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Craiglea Maiden (J. Jones), which shifted in. J. Jones, rider of Craiglea Maiden, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Sneaky Squirrel (J. Piper) raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Craiglea Maiden, which raced below expectations, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 6:

Open Handicap - 1300m
1st - Nellie Got There; 2nd -Spy Zaim; 3rd - Geebeetee

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Co-trainer Jason McLachlan: “I do believe the horse is a miler, but he was fresh up after a spell and they all had their chance to beat him. We know how consistent he is. We know he fights – and all that helped him get the result again today.”

Jockey Damian Browne (who completed a double on the day): “He was probably the class performer in the race. He is a town performer. I was a little bit worried. Jason (McLachlan) said he may be a run short and that I should just save him for the last bit if I could. I was able to do that and he was able to give that little bit in the last fifty yards which really counted.”

The night before, the Bruce and Jason McLachlan training partnership saddled three winners at the night meeting at the Sunshine Coast. All of those stables winners – Star Of Palazzo, My Whippy and Carry On Doctor - were ridden by Nathan Evans. Evans who also brought home a winner (Lapetus) for trainer Paddy Cunningham to leave the meeting with an outstanding haul of four winners on the night.

As a partnership, the McLachlans have now won thirty-three races at the Sunshine Coast (where they are dominant performers and runaway Premiership leaders). Considering that they had their first winner as a partnership at the track on November 9 last year (just four months ago), their flow of winners has been exceptional. They have also, according to Jason McLachlan, won “about eight or ten in town,” while their biggest success came when they won the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast with Phelan Ready.

Co-trainer Jason McLachlan: “I don’t think there would be anyone in Australia who’s done what we’ve done in terms of number of winners in the last four months. I tell you what I think it is. It is the new and the old. Like, my dad has taken a lot of my ideas – I’ve worked all over the world, in England, in France – he’s taken a lot a new ideas on board. Having said that he’s forgotten what I still have to learn. He’s got the tried and true method and a lot of things I do have helped as well, so it really is a case of a good combination working well together.”

The appearance of the Liam Birchley trained Rags To Riches at the Sunday meeting at the Sunshine Coast raised a few eyebrows. The gelding’s last two starts were in the Villiers and the Bernborough where he acquitted himself with some distinction against quality opposition. Rags To Riches was first-up here and Birchley put apprentice Mitchell Speers up to take 2kg off the steadying burden of 63.5kg that Rags To Riches had been set to carry.

Trainer Liam Birchley (speaking before the race): “We brought him here because there are not too many options for this horse. He needs to freshen up and 1200m is just a waste of time for him. He just hasn’t got the speed to make any use of it. But we need to start him off somewhere. He’s got to go to a mile next start so, he has just got to have a reasonable run over a reasonable sort of distance we can step up from next time. I don’t know how he’ll go here, but he’s going terrific in training, probably just short of his best. We are hoping this run, which is obviously part of a bigger plan, can get him back up to where he needs to be.”

Rags To Riches finished fifth, 2,30 length behind the winner Nellie Got There, who carried 4kg less than the Birchley trained runner.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The start of this race was delayed for a short time due to Doonan Dancer having to be replated behind the barriers. Spy Ziam (S. Galloway), Special Voyage (J. Jones) and Rags To Riches (M. Speers) were tightened for room on jumping away between Eleventh Command (C. Gilby) and Doonan Dancer (A. Pattillo), which shifted out. Near the 700m, Lombardy (K. Pope) raced in restricted room between Geebeetee (N. Thomas) and Rags To Riches (M. Speers), which shifted in, resulting Lombardy having to be steadied. M. Speers, rider of Rags To Riches, was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure he makes more effort in similar circumstances to keep his mounts straight.
When questioned regarding the performance of Rags To Riches, M. Speers stated his instructions were to endeavour to position the gelding in a forward position, as per its usual racing pattern. He stated after beginning only fairly, Rags To Riches was unable to muster early speed despite his urgings and settled in a three-wide position further back in the field than anticipated. M. Speers further stated that when he placed his mount under pressure approaching the 500m, the gelding responded to his riding, and whilst near the 350m he accidentally dropped his whip, the gelding continued to find the line well under hands and heels riding. Stewards noted the explanation tendered.

Race 7:

Class 1 Handicap - 1600m
1st - Brief Intention; 2nd - Lee Kova; 3rd - Sir Reason

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Laurie Manzelmann (who completed a double on the day): “I’ve had him four months and this is only his fourth run. He’s had a lot of problems – feet problems. He’s taking him a long, long time to get to this stage. I’ve got to look after his feet all of the time. The problems are not a thing of the past. They have to be managed all of the time. I’ve got a very good farrier. “

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Sigurd (A. Pattillo) was slow to begin. Pop Legend (K. Yoshida) knuckled on jumping away. Sir Reason (M. Paget) raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Sigurd, which raced wide throughout, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities

EAGLE FARM REVIEW (SAT, MAR 07)

A review of the meeting held at Eagle Farm on Saturday, March 7.

SUPPLEMENTARY STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
From ITC meeting 5.3.09 - Trainer T. Cotsiopoulos advised stewards that Mishki (Race 3) pulled up lame in the off-foreleg and would now be sent for a spell.

Race 1:

Class 6 Handicap - 1818m
1st - Drumshanbo; 2nd - Use To Be A Dancer; 3rd - Super Wonton

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Nolan: He’s never fought like that, but he has always been a horse who has preferred Eagle Farm. He had a nice run. He never had to circle them. At Doomben the other day, if you watch the race, he’s had to come around the whole field. You can’t do it at Doomben, you know. This is his first go over 1800m and he has handled it. He’s always been a horse who has found the line and he is very consistent. We’ll come back here again and probably step him up to 2000m and give him a go at that.”

Apprentice jockey Michael Palmer: “He stepped up in distance today. He had the good alley in barrier two and Michael (Nolan) told me to try and put him up there a bit closer today. He jumped out really well and basically just put himself into the race. Once we got a nice position he travelled well throughout. Once we sort of straightened up, he just kept grinding away, you know, he really kept coming. He always grinds away at them. Once I got to about the 200m, he was always going to get them, but only just. He was always coming.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Drumshanbo): 10.00 steady.
Favourite (Lucky Toss): 3.20 in to 3.00 out to 3.10. Finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Peaceful Honour (D. Craven) and Use To Be A Dancer (Matthew Palmer) were slow to begin. Shuffle The Cash (O. Turpin) and Dawns Queen (D. Browne) raced three wide for the majority of the event. Portland Bay (A. Pattillo) raced three wide in the early stages and near the 1200m improved forward to take up a position outside the leader. Leaving the 1000m the nearside winker of Havayarn (S. Scriven) became dislodged. Approaching the 600m Havayarn, which had raced ungenerously throughout the event, improved up on to the heels of Drumshanbo (Michael Palmer) and had to be steadied. Tolart (C. Reith) and Dawns Queen, which were following, were both hampered as a consequence. Near the 250m Lucky Toss (J. Taylor), which was inclined to lay in, shifted in taking Viking Storm (L. Rolls) in on to Portland Bay. J. Taylor was severely reprimanded under AR. 137(a) for failing to make a greater effort to keep his mount on a straight path. A post-race veterinary examination of Peaceful Honour revealed the horse was showing signs of soreness in the off knee. Trainer M. Thexton was advised that she must produce a veterinary clearance for Peaceful Honour before its next race start. A post-race veterinary examination of Father Dex (J. Bowditch) revealed that the horse was suffering metabolic heat syndrome. A post-race veterinary examination of Norse Code (R. Wiggins) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Stewards questioned apprentice O. Turpin regarding his riding of Shuffle The Cash, particularly as to whether there was an opportunity for him to position his mount closer to the rails after being obliged to race wide in the early stages. Apprentice Turpin stated that shortly after entering the back straight he had attempted to restrain Shuffle The Cash in an endeavour to take a position closer to the fence, however the horse was travelling strongly at that stage and he was unable to do so. He added that he did not think it would be in the horse's best interests to trail Portland Bay to a forward position and felt his best option was to allow the horse to settle where it was comfortable. His explanation was recorded.

Race 2:

2yo QTIS Handicap - 1200m
1st - Sweepstaking; 2nd - Fantastic Blue; 3rd - Manhattan Angel

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Gillian Heinrich (talking about her unbeaten filly, who is now two from two): “It was really good. She improved obviously on his first run and got a good, firm track as well today. It was nice to see her be somewhere handy too. She was a little bit unruly at one stage. She had to trial a couple of times and now she’s had the two runs on top of that, so I’ll give her a break now and then I’ll bring her back. She’s done her job. You’ve got nothing to gain by pushing on now. We know we’ve got a nice filly. We’d only probably get one more run out of her this prep if we pushed her anyway, so we’ll put her away. No, I don’t think we have time to get her back for the Carnival. All of the Carnival horses are virtually back in now. By the time she had a month off and some weeks back it would be the end of it already. There’s nothing to say she can’t go down south next time though.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Sweepstaking): 2.80 in to 2.60 out to 2.70.
The winner was the favourite – one of two favourites to win on the day.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Fantastic Blue (P. Wolfgram) blundered on jumping away and shifted out bumping Succeed And Exceed (J. Bowditch). Empezar (E. Wilkinson) and Choices (W. Clasohm) came together on jumping away. Shortly after the start Speedometer (D. Browne) and No Ransom (O. Turpin) were tightened for room between Choistar (K. Yoshida), which shifted in, and Brennan (D. Gill), which shifted out. Speedometer over-raced in the early stages of the event. Empezar raced greenly in the early stages.
Near the 900m Pure Devil (Michael Palmer) commenced to hang out and took no further competitive part in the event. Trainer T. Ainsworth was advised that the horse must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next start. When the pace eased approaching the 800m Brennan over-raced at the heels of Manhattan Angel (S. Scriven) and had to be steadied.
Choistar raced wide throughout the event. No Ransom (O. Turpin) laid in when placed under pressure in the straight and inside the final 100m shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. Trainer A. Bailey advised stewards that he would spell No Ransom immediately and undertook to trial the horse before starting it again. Show Me Why (L. Rolls) raced greenly in the early stages of the straight.
Jockey P. Wolfgram, the rider of Fantastic Blue, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), the careless riding being that near the 250m he permitted his mount to shift out under hard riding, resulting in Show Me Why (L. Rolls) clipping the heels of Fantastic Blue and dislodging apprentice Rolls. P. Wolfgram's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of one calendar month, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on 7 March and expire at midnight on Tuesday, 7 April 2009.
A post-race veterinary examination of Pure Devil revealed the horse had sustained a small laceration to the inside of the off hind fetlock.

Race 3:

F&M Class 6 Plate - 1200m
1st - Seething Duck; 2nd - Michelle Cafea; 3rd - Jacaranda Charm

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Bruce Brown: “Yeah, I’ve only had her for this prep and she was a pretty unlucky in both runs. First-up she just needed the run and last start she got trapped three or four wide, you know. She wasn’t beaten by bad horses either. Queen Of Asia and Blue Jupiter (who won those races) have both put together a couple of good results. Today we decided there was going to be plenty of speed. We didn’t want to be trapped wide so we dug her out of the machines because I know she used to lead by three or four lengths in Sydney. She crossed them and led and everything worked out nice. It makes a difference when they can run their own race.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Seething Duck): 6.00 steady.
Favourite (Stacked): 3.00 out to 3.20. Finished eighth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Superfly (R. Stewart) was slow to begin. Near the 600m Gun Belle (S. Scriven) was momentarily crowded for room between Jacaranda Charm (K. Forrester) and Stacked (Matthew Palmer), which was taken in slightly by Manic Monday (L. Rolls). Manic Monday and Deejay’s Girl (S. Galloway) raced wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the performance of Stacked, apprentice Matthew Palmer stated that the horse began only fairly and could not muster early speed, resulting in it settling further back than he would have preferred. He added that the horse only travelled fairly throughout the event and was under pressure shortly after entering the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Stacked failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 4:

1MW Handicap - 1000m
1st - Cattleman; 2nd - Admiral Gherkin; 3rd - Falco Star

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Harry Richardson: “The race went exactly how Jason (Taylor) and I planned it. Two or three would go quick and we would get a beautiful sit. That’s what happened. He hasn’t run for seven weeks, but that was no worry. No, he didn’t trial. We didn’t do a thing with him. He doesn’t need much work. He just loves being fresh. He knows what to do.”

Jockey Jason Taylor: “He drew an awkward gate, but he seemed to get across and he was travelling beautifully. He can begin and you can let him be where he wants to be. It was a good win. He’s got a good strike-rate (six wins from eleven starts) and he just continues to race well.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Cattleman): 4.60 out to 5.00.
Favourite (Admiral Gherkin): 3.20 out to 3.60. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Fiamore (R. Wiggins) and Demolir (S. Galloway) were slow to begin. Jockey J. Taylor, the rider of Cattleman, was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in leaving the 900m, taking Final Vision (G. Baker) inwards, resulting in crowding to Sleepy Jackson (O. Turpin) and Fiamore, both of which had to be steadied. Stewards questioned apprentice L. Rolls regarding his riding of Hotshot Hayil in the straight, particularly over the final 150m as to why he failed to take a run that presented itself to the inside of Fiamore. Apprentice Rolls stated that his first option was to take a run between Sleepy Jackson (O. Turpin) and Fiamore, however due to movement from both those runners he was unable to do so and as a result he was held up over the concluding stages. Stewards recorded the explanation.

Race 5:

3yo QTIS Handicap - 1300m
1st - Meet George; 2nd - Heartsun; 3rd - Bold Glance

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Apprentice jockey Owen Turpin: “The horse had always drawn badly the last three runs I’ve ridden him. He always seems to sort of settle just worse than midfield because of the alley. He is not a horse you can ride forward. He is more a horse you can save up on the bit – and he will put in a good sprint. He finished strongly and his momentum took him right past them. Just the last 50m he felt it. He just wanted to run around a little bit ... but he had it won by then.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Meet George): 6.50 out to 7.00 in to 5.00.
Favourite (Dual Code): 2.80 steady. Finished twelth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Satula (K. Forrester), which was slow to begin, had to be steadied shortly after when tightened for room between River Perfume (S. Drake) and Meet George (O. Turpin), which shifted in. Heartsun (D. Browne) over-raced in the early stages. Navigation (Matthew Palmer) raced very ungenerously in the early stages and near the 1000m had to be steadied when crowded for room between Dual Code (Michael Palmer) and Macedon (R. Wiggins) which shifted in. Bungalien (C. McIver) raced wide in the early stages. Approaching the 900m Satula was tightened for room and obliged to steady when Za Magic (B. Stewart) shifted in when not fully clear. B. Stewart was reprimanded under AR. 137(a) and advised to exercise care in similar circumstances. Macedon raced wide throughout. Upon entering the home straight Vivaheart (L. Cheshire) shifted out hampering Goldfinger (C. Reith).
When questioned regarding the performance of Dual Code, apprentice Michael Palmer stated that the horse began well and he was able to take up a position mid-field, however when he placed the horse under pressure near the 400m it failed to accelerate and did not finish the race off as he had expected. Trainer T. Bailey stated that he was disappointed in the performance of Dual Code today and added that the horse had worked well leading up to today's event and he had expected the horse to race well. Mr Bailey undertook to advise stewards of anything that came to light in subsequent days which may have had a bearing on the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of Dual Code failed to reveal any abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Macedon, jockey R. Wiggins stated that although the horse was obliged to race three wide, it was disappointing in the way it finished the race off.
Trainer J. Wigginton was advised that Bungalien, which shifted in abruptly near the 200m despite the efforts of its rider and raced ungenerously for some distance thereafter, would require a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, and would have to trial to the satisfaction of the stewards before racing again.
Stewards recorded the explanation of jockey K. Forrester regarding his failure to ride his mount (Satula) out right to the line, but nevertheless reminded him of his obligations under the rules.

Race 6:

NMW Handicap - 1500m
1st - Bann Ruby; 2nd - Icedane; 3rd - Bernardo

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Les Kelly: “That’s his fourth run this prep. He is a horse that needs a couple of runs to get him right. We’ve just kept stepping him up in ground. He’s probably going to be at his best when he gets to 1800m, 2000m.”

Jockey Shane Scriven: “Yeah, I was always going to get the run on the inside but it came a bit soon for me. He got to the front and then he really thought all of his work was done. Just had to keep reminding him, you know, it’s not over till the winning post comes up. Mate, it looked a nice race for him and, you know, the boys assured me he would run well. It was my job to give him the best run. Things worked out well. We’re the winners.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Bann Ruby): 4.00 out to 4.20 in to 4.00.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Bloodhound (J. Taylor) was slow to begin. Sinful Warrior (L. Cheshire) raced wide throughout. Icedane (S. Drake) laid in under pressure in the straight. Post-race veterinary examinations of Starry Dancer (A. Pattillo) and Makunda (G. Baker) failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 7:

Listed (Quality) Handicap - 1600m
1st - Go Cart; 2nd - Stage Shaker; 3rd - Sam's Express

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Steven O’dea (who has now moved permanently to Brisbane from Townsville): “I bought him out of Melbourne. He was with Paddy Payne and before that he was trained by Guy Walter. I bought him the middle of last year. He had a few feet issues. I had to spell him straight away and then bring him back in. There was a step up in distance today, a good barrier and a drop in weight so that was all in his favour. I might give him a bit of a let-up now. I’ve still got to decide. I might bring him back for the Carnival. I think there are a couple of mile races – Listed races. It’s usually wet over the Carnival so that suits him as well. I’m moving to Eagle Farm permanently. I’m not going back. I’ve got four horses in the stable now, but I’m got another ten to come in over the next month. So it’s an interesting time for me.”

Jockey Ryan Wiggins: “He had a nice barrier and we got the nice run. I just had to go for a tight run at the top of the straight on the inside. He took the gap well and won well. They were coming at me at the last bit, but I had a nice cruisy run to get to the finish so I had enough left in the end. The step up in distance suited him and a bit of speed in the race suited him as well.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Go Cart): 7.00 steady.
Favourite (Rightson): 2.80 in to 2.60. Finished fifth.

Secrets Untold (K. Yoshida) raced in restricted room for a short distance after the start. Secrets Untold raced three wide throughout. Rounding the home turn Rightson (S. Scriven) and Nexgen (A. Pattillo) came together and brushed. Approaching the 100m Ice Chariot (P. Wolfgram) was momentarily steadied when Honour Happy List (D. Craven) shifted in under pressure. Soon after Ice Chariot shifted out under pressure and bumped Secrets Untold. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that Slim Pickings (L. Cheshire) was sore in the near-fore foot. Trainer D. Johnson was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for Slim Pickings before starting the horse again.
Jockey D. Craven, the rider of Honour Happy List, was fined $300 under AR. 145 for weighing in in excess of half a kilogram over his declared weight.
Stewards questioned jockey S. Galloway, the rider of Angelo Minny, regarding his riding of that horse in the home straight. S. Galloway stated that shortly after entering the straight he placed the horse under pressure riding hands and heels, however Angelo Minny failed to accelerate and midway down the straight he was of the opinion that the horse was not a chance of improving its position and therefore did not apply undue pressure as the horse was second up from a spell. S. Galloway added that the horse was better suited over longer journeys. Stewards recorded the explanation of S. Galloway, however advised him that in future he should ride his mounts out in such a way as to not leave himself open to question.

Race 8:

C,G&E Class 6 Plate - 1200m
1st - Public Nuisance; 2nd - Heart; 3rd - Frosty

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Louise White: “I don’t know where Heather is. (Heather Burgess is the co-owner and former trainer of Public Nuisance who scored his fourth consecutive victory here – one for Burgess and three for White). “She’s not here this time. I don’t know where she is. I couldn’t get her on the phone. I know she’ll be watching somewhere and she would have screamed the place down probably. It’s just fantastic.”

Jockey Damian Browne: “That was a good effort, you know. He is a pretty honest little horse. He needed a gap in the straight. When it came it was a pretty small gap and he had to be encouraged to take the run. Other than taking that run, which was pretty tight, we travelled well all the way and he showed courage in the finish. It’s an unbelievable start to a training career, isn’t it?”

Browne was referring to Louise White’s perfect training record of three winners (all in the city) from three starts. How does she do it? “That’s my secret,” was White’s reply.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Public Nuisance): 10.00 out to 12.00.
Favourite (Frosty): 6.00 in to 3.80. Finished third.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Lennon (R. Wiggins) and Lucidly (A. Pattillo) came together on jumping away. Alternate (C. McIver), Hear Ye (S. Scriven), Save A Buck (J. Taylor) and Abbacina (S. Galloway) raced wide throughout. IPSWICH REVIEW (THURS, MAR 5)

A review of the meeting at Ipswich on Thursday, March 5.

STEWARDS SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT EXTRACT:
From BTC, 4.3.09
Jockey T. Pannell was fined $100 for being overweight - AR120(b).

Race 1:

F&M Class 1 Handicap - 1350m
1st - Nothin Leica Rapid; 2nd - Gazillion; 3rd - Bumper Harvest

Trainer Bruce Hill: “It’s good to see her do what you know she can do. It’s taken her a long time to put it all together. She did show a lot early but didn’t do much right. She’s going a lot better this time in and Terry (Treichel) has helped with her. She should be able to step up further. I’d like to get her to a mile.”

Tony Pattillo, the rider of the third placed Bumper Harvest, lodged a protest against the winner, citing alleged interference on the home turn.

Jockey Tony Pattillo: “Mr. Sears’ filly (Bumper Harvest) has got a very good turn of foot for about 200m. At the 500m, Terry Treichel (on Nothin Leica Rapid) shifted over and made things very, very awkward. I had a runner on my inside. I had to take care of that runner and rider on my inside. Terry Treichel put pressure on me from the outside. Look, I was at his girth. My head was at his girth. The wash-up of it was that 50m past the interference, I then come back and I’m a good length-and-a-half off him. So I reckon it has cost me a length. Then I had to use my horse up – that 200m dash – where, if I’d been able to just track up and follow him like I was, I’d have been able to come around without doing a ton of work and I’d win the race. I had to use my filly up rounding the corner to try and pick ground back up to give my horse a winning chance. The way I would have liked to have ridden the horse was taken away from me by Terry Treichel’s horse when she came in on top of me and caused interference. I really think it cost me in excess of a length. Mr. Sears knows his horse has got a 200m sprint. He asked me to ride for it and wait for it. The winner definitely shifts in half a horse and impedes me and, in turn, I run into trouble trying to help Ronnie Stewart out (Stewart was aboard Electric Lass). By the time things got rolling again some 50m down the track, Terry Treichel’s got a length and half on me and I have to use my horse up. I really think it cost me a winning chance. If I had been able to ride the horse the way I intended to ride it, I truly believe I would have won the race.”

Jockey Terry Treichel: “I believe that at no stage did I get inside of three deep. You can see from the film I’m tracking Sheree Drake all the way. Tony Pattillo’s horse weighs in upon the horse on his inside and in doing that Ronnie Stewart’s horse (Electric Lass), I’m not certain if he hits the fence or not, comes back out and bumps Tony Pattillo’s horse’s hind-quarters. I was still three wide. “

Tony Sears (trainer of Bumper Harvest): “I’d just like to agree with Tony Pattillo. I think my horse lost a length-and-a-half because, as Tony said, he had to take hold of the horse completely, straighten up and then he’s had to chase where he wouldn’t have been chasing if the other horse hadn’t put him in that situation.”

Bruce Hill (trainer of Nothin Leica Rapid): “I haven’t got much to add except I think Tony (Pattillo) was trying to go where there was no room to go.”

The protest was dismissed.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
On return to scale a protest was lodged by A. Pattillo, rider of the 3rd placegetter, Bumper Harvest, against Nothin Leica Rapid being declared 1st, alleging interference on the home turn. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol films it was established that near the 450m Bumper Harvest was reluctant to take a narrow run between Nothin Leica Rapid (T. Treichel) and Electric Lass (R. Stewart) due to Nothing Leica Rapid commencing to lay in, and as a result tightened the running of Electric Lass, causing Electric Lass to be steadied and lose ground. As such, stewards were not comfortably satisfied that the interference had any material effect on the finishing positions of the relevant horses, and therefore the protest was dismissed and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge's placings. At a subsequent inquiry, Stewards found no one rider at fault and therefore no action was taken. Miss Streetem (R. Hinricks) and Gazillion (S. Drake) bumped on jumping away. Shortly after the start, Bumper Harvest (A. Pattillo) raced ungenerously for a short distance. Miss Streetem over-raced during the early and middle stages, placing its rider at a disadvantage. Gazillion (S. Drake) commenced to over-race during the middle stages. A post race veterinary examination of Miss Streetem revealed the mare had bled during the event. Trainer R. Mackay was advised that Miss Streetem would be barred from racing for 3 months under the provisions of AR53A.

Race 2:

QTIS 2yo Handicap - 800m
1st - Sniplaz; 2nd - Before The Storm; 3rd - Mountain Of Dreams

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley: “He’s a soft-boned horse. We have trouble with his shins, like every time he gallops he goes shin-sore for a day or two, so we just got to be careful not to run him on hard tracks. His first-up run (in heavy going behind Temple Of Boom) was very good. He should have run second. Then he struck a hard track in his second start. He won on a slow track last time and it’s probably just got the sting out of it here again, even though it’s posted as good. No, I didn’t think we were going to get there halfway up the straight. He got a long way off the leader, but he chased her down well. You can’t give too many instructions when there are so many unraced horses in the race, so I told Mitch (Speers) just to see how he pings and let him race accordingly. He’s going well. He’ll go to the Magic Millions race in Rocky now.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Sniplaz (M. Speers), Coloured Veil (S. Apthorpe) and Spiffing (L. Cassidy) were all slow to begin. On jumping away, Hootilla (K. Banks) and Miss Flossy (A. Spinks) were both tightened for room between Warrego (M. Abe) and Dance School (S. Bogenhuber), both of which shifted ground. Near the 700m, Spiffing (L. Cassidy) was tightened for room and had to be steadied when racing between Fields Of Plenty (B. Pengelly), which shifted in slightly, and Warrego (M. Abe), which shifted out. At a subsequent inquiry, M. Abe was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Passing the 650m, Miss Flossy (A. Spinks) shifted out around the heels of Mountain Of Dreams (L. Rolls) and in doing so tightened the running of Warrego, which in turn shifted out, inconveniencing Spiffing. A. Spinks, rider of Miss Flossy, was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Coloured Veil (S. Apthorpe) raced greenly in the home straight. Waasies Shadow (D. Griffin) and Warrego (M. Abe), which were inclined to hang out rounding the home turn, raced wide throughout. Sniplaz raced wide throughout. When questioned regarding the performance of Spiffing, L. Cassidy stated that his instructions were to push forward, however after being slow to begin and being inconvenienced in the early stages of the race, he was obliged to race further back than anticipated. He further added that, in his opinion, he was not overly disappointed with the horse's performance today and was of the belief that Spiffing would benefit from today's experience. The explanation was noted.

Race 3:

3yo & Up Maiden Plate - 1680m
1st - Princess Of Monaco; 2nd - Sydney Or The Bush; 3rd - A Little Danger

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Brad Pengelly: “She needed the run last start. The pace was on enough for her to settle back today. She gradually improved and she finished the race off well. She had the leader in her keeping for probably the last furlong and she moved ahead when she needed to.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Son Of Zaha was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon behind the barriers prior to the start at the request of its rider and was cleared to race. A Little Danger (L. Cassidy) and Princess Of Monaco (B. Pengelly) bumped on jumping away. Son Of Zaha (K. Banks) was tightened for room on jumping away between Doonbah Grey (M. Speers) and Mishki (A. Spinks), which shifted out. When the pace steadied near the 1400m, Bi Qualo (B. Stewart) commenced to over-race, shifted out and in doing so forced Sydney Or The Bush (C. Whiteley) out on to A Little Danger, resulting in A Little Danger having to be steadied. Courage Tattoo (M. Squires) and A Little Danger raced wide in the early stages of the race. Mary’s Halo (R. Hinricks) and Hooray Tobey (D. Green) over-raced during the early stages. Son Of Zaha raced wide from leaving the 800m. Near the 350m Doonbah Grey (M. Speers), which commenced to weaken, had to be momentarily steadied when tightened for room by Princess Of Monaco (B. Pengelly), which attempted to take a narrow run to the inside of A Little Danger.

Race 4:

C,G & E 3yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1200m
1st - Heza Rocker; 2nd - No Consensus; 3rd - Costplus

Trainer Kevin Kemp: “It was a lovely ride (by Brad Pengelly). We talked before the race and I thought that most Easy Rocking’s like to come from off the pace and not be bustled early. So, drawn wide, there was the chance to ride him a little bit quiet. I thought he might have been a little too quiet at one stage. I wasn’t overly impressed with the form in the race – but all you can do is win it. But it was just such a nice ride from the jockey. It’s the first ride he’s ever had for me. You never know. It’s probably not going to be the last. He was asking me about a few of the better ones in the stable before the race. So like I say, you never know. Of course the other bloke (Ric McMahon) who’s been riding for me is gone now. Well I think he’s suspended at the moment and then as soon as he comes off suspension he’s gone (to Singapore). I think we’re pretty lucky in Queensland. I think there are half-a-dozen jockeys here you can happily throw the colours to, although I like giving the young ones a go too – like Jaqui Brown, she’ll win a few.”

Jockey Brad Pengelly (who completed a double on the day): “We drew a little bit awkward so we elected to ride him a bit quiet. The pace was on which suited us. It was a bit crowded in the straight, but I was able to improve into the clear and he finished off well.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
A pre race veterinary examination of No Consensus passed the gelding to start. Pendamore (S. Galloway) and Rosies Hero (S. Bogenhuber) were tightened for room on jumping away between General Remark (M. Milford) and No Consensus (M. Paget), both of which shifted ground. Fatlamp (S. Apthorpe) and Carigano (J. Taylor) both began awkwardly. Near the 100m, Carigano (J. Taylor) had to be steadied when awkwardly placed between Costplus (R. Hinricks) and Heza Rocker (B. Pengelly), which shifted in slightly. General Remark raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Carigano failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Race 5:

F&M Maiden Handicap - 1200m
1st - Mysterious Girl; 2nd - Hello Boss; 3rd - Zahnoochi

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Humby (after landing his first win as a trainer): “She had twelve months off prior to her last prep due to EI. She really just needed that prep to get well for this prep. She’s come back a different horse. All her previous form seems to have been on rain affected ground, so I was more concerned about the hard track today than I was about the step up to 1200m. In saying that, she has had excuses in some of her runs on the dry tracks, but that was the main concern. She coped very well today. As I said, she is a different horse this prep. Last time in she trained off pretty quickly and as soon as she got back into work this time you could see the difference. She’s a lot stronger. We’ve probably got 40kg more on her this time around and that strength is obviously going to show up in her results – like today. When she got back in the field, it wasn’t what I wanted. The instructions were to push forward. I do know that she hasn’t got the toe to lead, but I thought she’d be there somewhere. But when she couldn’t get there, Scott (Galloway), being the rider he is, made the decision and placed her where she was most comfortable and he rode her perfectly.”

Jockey Scott Galloway: “She drew wide and they went pretty hard. She didn’t have the pace, so It took me a little while to ease her back and get in behind. Once she got back in behind she had a nice run. I had to get her out at about the 400m and she let down well. They’ve been riding for speed, but it probably suits her getting back a bit. That was his (David Humby’s) first win as a trainer. It was well done.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Branzero (N. Yamada) and Sweet Lizzie (B. Thomson) began awkwardly. Hello Boss (C. Whiteley) began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped Mysterious Girl (S. Galloway), which in turn shifted in, bumping Zahnoochi (M. Speers). A short distance later, Hello Boss was steadied away from the heels of Kalinga Lady (A. Pattillo), which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. Kalinga Lady and Hello Boss brushed near 150m. B. Thompson, rider of Sweet Lizzie, was reminded of her obligations to ride her mounts right out to the finish line.

Race 6:

CG&E Class 1 Handicap - 1350m
1st - Mister Maverick; 2nd - Classic Victor; 3rd - Mossbemad

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Phillip Cox: “When he got beaten the other day (when finishing second), the only reason we got beaten is that we came out of barrier eleven and the winner came out of one. He would have won the other day with a better barrier. Kenji (Yoshida) came back after that last run and said 1300m or 1400m, he’d just love it, you know. So we stepped up in distance and Kenji was spot on with his assessment. It was a good run. He kicked on well.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As M. Wood was to be overweight, A. Spinks was substituted as the rider of Skifort. M. Wood was fined $50 under AR120(b). In assessing penalty stewards took into account M. Wood's exemplary record regarding this matter. Mossbebad (D. Griffin) was slow to begin. Near the 800m, Breakaway Boy (R. Wiggins) raced up on to the heels of Skifort (A. Spinks) and was steadied. Breakaway Boy raced wide from that point onwards.

Race 7:

Class 2 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Edward Bear; 2nd - Lotza Action; 3rd - Lass Ee

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Apprentice jockey Michael Palmer: “He got back a bit today and that’s sort of where he has been racing. Once we got to about the 800m I rode him for luck and all the rights gaps appeared and he came home well. It was a good little run today. It makes the trip worthwhile.” (Palmer was referring to the fact Edward Bear was his only ride for the day).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, stewards queried the Judge's placings, in particular No 5, Oboe D’Amor being declared the 5th placegetter. After consultation with the Judge, the placings were amended to read: No. 10 - Edward Bear - 1st: No. 7 - Lotza Action - 2nd: No. 6 - Lass Ee - 3rd: No.3 - Qwerty - 4th: No. 4 - Willyclang - 5th. It was ascertained at a subsequent inquiry that the Judge had made a typographical error when entering the numbers to be displayed on the semaphore board.
Prussain Belle (L. Rolls) began awkwardly, almost dislodging its rider and lost considerable ground. Trainer B. Tanks was advised that Prussian Belle must perform satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next race start. Willyclang (S. Richardson) commenced to hang out from the 600m and continued to do so until near the 400m. From the 350m until approaching the 150m, Willyclang was held up and unable to obtain clear running. Lass Ee (R. Hinricks), Telerian (M. Speers), Miliardo (C. Whiteley) and Mr Megs (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.

Race 8:

Class 2 Handicap - 1680m
1st - Ryjatah; 2nd - Courtroom Drama; 3rd - Radio Star

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Adam Ivor: “That was a very good win. There was no speed in the race. We thought we can’t get caught lolly-gagging in this one, so we had to try and take him into a more forward position. He stepped up in distance, but I wasn’t worried about that. Before I got him he’d won here over 1660m, so this is his pet distance. This is my first prep with him – the four runs for the two wins now. Last week there was a lot of bad luck. There was no speed and when he quickened, they quickened so he had to keep pulling wider and wider. So we worked out a plan and I’m very pleased with the horse’s performance.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Near the 1400m, Tully Tenor (R. Wiggins) raced up on to the heels of Blistering Miss (D. Griffin), shifted out and in doing so inconvenienced Ground Swell (R. Stewart). Leaving the 800m, Week Nights On (J. Taylor) shifted out to improve and raced wide for the remainder of the event. Near the 500m, Tully Tenor (R. Wiggins) faltered in its action and was restrained out of the event. A post race veterinary examination of Tully Tenor revealed the horse to have fractured its near-fore sesamoid bone, and was subsequently euthanised on humane grounds. Laurinel Princess (B. Pengelly) had difficulty obtaining clear running over the final 500m and over the concluding stages was disappointed when attempting to take a narrow run between Blickem (J. Pujolas) and Radio Star (K. Banks), which was taken out by Courtroom Drama (T. Pannell), which shifted out under pressure. K. Banks, rider of Radio Star, and T. Pannell, rider of Courtroom Drama, were advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
