EAGLE FARM REVIEW (WED, FEB 04)

A review of the meeting held at Eagle Farm on Wednesday, February 4.

STEWARDS SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT EXTRACT:
Jockey A. Merritt was fined $100 for failing to obey a stewards' direction to produce a medical certificate. AR175(p)

From SCTC, 1.2.09 - Race 8
Stewards questioned trainer L. Birchley regarding the disappointing performance of Elshamah. Mr Birchley confirmed his disappointment and could offer no explanation other than to state that the gelding may have failed to handle the increase in distance as this was the horse's first start at 1600m. He further added it would now be his intention to set the horse for races over shorter distances and add blinkers to the horse's gear before its next race start.

Race 1:

3yo & Up CG&E Maiden Plate - 1400m
1st - Loves A Challenge; 2nd - Local Talent; 3rd - Golden Balls

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Brian Smith: “This horse has given me one of the toughest times I’ve had in terms of trying to get a horse to the races - because of his bad habits ... and just his determination to do things his way. That’s why his name is Loves A Challenge, because he was very hard work for a very long time. Plenty of people have been involved in helping with him. Tammy, Brad Pengelly’s girlfriend, and (strapper) Morris Crawford, who has been his man for the last six to nine months. They’ve all played a part. The horse has come out of all that, but it was a battle.”

Jockey Brad Pengelly: “This horse’s family - his relatives - they’re a little bit feisty. He’s taken that attribute on board as well, but he is going well at the moment. He was easy enough to ride. Throughout the race he was fine. It’s just little things, like, after the ride he wanted to whip around and carry on and that sort of thing. That’s just ... all that means is that he is not quite mentally right at the moment. But he couldn’t be with a better person than Brian (Smith) to get him right, and yeah, like Brian says, there is a lot of people putting time and work into him. At the end of the day I guess it is sort of a team effort.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Love’s A Challenge): 2.50 in to 2.40 out to 2.60.
Favourite(Local talent): 2.10 out to 2.25. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Golden Balls (O. Turpin) was slow to begin. Local Talent (L. Cassidy) began awkwardly.
A post race veterinary examination of Kings Birthday, which tired over the concluding stages revealed the gelding to be exhibiting an abnormal respiratory noise. Whilst trainer M. Lakey indicated that connections intended to retire the gelding, stewards nevertheless advised Mr Lakey that he must provide a veterinary clearance, together with the results of an endoscopic examination if the gelding was to resume race.

Race 2:

3yo & Up Fillies & Mares Maiden Plate - 1400m
1st - Manaudou; 2nd - Chi Chi Grande; 3rd - Ella Maree

Trainer Kelso Wood: “I think she’ll make it in the city. I think she can step up in distance a bit more. She’s out of a good family. There was nothing wrong with her last two results (both second placed finishes). At Ipswich the other horse (Comatose) had the drop on her and the weight advantage – it had a claim ... and before that, here at Eagle farm, she was a bit unlucky. She just got beat by a nose. She’s bred to stick on a bit so the step up to 1400m here probably helped here.” (Manaudou had previously not raced beyond 1200m).

Jockey Brad Pengelly: “She travelled beautifully in the run and then coming to the corner she got a bit flustered. She didn’t really know what to do and she got her head up. Yeah, so I just had to sort of encourage her a bit, and once she realised that she had to accelerate, she did that well. It was just a matter of encouragement and, I guess, confidence in a way. She is a filly that is improving all the time. This was only her fifth start and I’m sure she’ll get better as she gets more experience.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Manaudou): 1.70 in to 1,60 out to 1.70.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Licorice (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin. Lucyrox (C. McIver) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
Near the 900m, Nothin Leica Rapid (P. Hammersley) was forced to race in restricted room for a short distance inside Natane (R. McMahon), which shifted in. Choose A Star (M. Hellyer), which had a tendency to lay out, was forced wider on the track near the 600m when Pink Sapphire (J. Taylor) shifted out to improve. Choose A Star continued to lay out for the remainder of the event. Approaching the 350m, Chi Chi Grande (A. Spinks) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so bumped Natane. R. McMahon, rider of Natane, dropped his whip near the 150m. Rip Snorter Gal (M. Palmer) raced wide throughout the event.

Race 3:

F&M Class 3 Handicap - 1300m
1st - Vera's Pride; 2nd - Smartaat; 3rd - French Nova

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Heathcote: “Nice to sneak another winner ahead of Baldwin (in the Trainers’ Premiership). She is a full sister to Malta and has the same owners.”

Jockey Larry Cassidy: “Yeah, I’ve seen a couple of wins in Sydney when Jeff Lloyd won on her. Similar class race. He used to bounce her and not chase her to the lead, but just let her use her natural speed and get there over a furlong and a bit. Then she would lead by a couple of lengths because she was going fairly quick and then he’d get to the 600m and he would go on her. Like, she would just gap them. I said to Rob (Heathcote) ... I was happy when he said I want you to lead because that’s how she raced in Sydney and that’s how to ride her. If she can’t win like that, she’s not going to win.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Vera’s Pride): 3.20 out to 3.60. (Equal Favourite).
Equal Favourite (Kenshe): 3.20 out to 3.60. Finished sixth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Train Wreck (S. Seamer) and Vera’s Pride (L. Cassidy) made contact on jumping away. Sonic Tara (M. Heagney) was slow to begin. Plenty Of Practise (O. Turpin) attempted to buck shortly after the start. Sonic Tara, which was following, had to be steadied and shifted out. Trainer F. Phillips was advised that Plenty Of Practise must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. Gazillion (S. Drake) laid out when placed under pressure in the straight.

Race 4:

4yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1000m
1st - Martha's Vineyard; 2nd - Private Kiss; 3rd - Ephraim Warrior

Trainer David Murphy: “The owners bought her from Melbourne for $8000. She had fourteen starts in Melbourne and this was her fourth start for me. We gave her two runs initially, then a break. I thought she’d win first-up at Coloundra last time. Then the rainstorm came and they put the race back an hour. She come apart during the delay. She’s can be very excitable and can fall apart a bit like that. Today though, she was nice and relaxed. She had it all her own way which helped. We might just try her over 1200m and see if she can lead like she did today, with no pressure, but it might turn out that she is a strictly 1000m horse. We’ll find out. Gee, I was very impressed with this win though so, hopefully, she can go on and with a couple of more races.”

Jockey Bobby El-Issa: “She’s a nice mare. I thought she was past the post when we jumped out of the gates. I just had to steer her.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Martha’s Vineyard): 3.00 out to 3.30.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Ephraim Warrior (L. Cassidy), Bulky Boy (R. Goltz) and Rumpapumpum (A. Erhart) were all checked on jumping away when severely tightened for room between Martha’s Vineyard (B. El-Issa), which jumped inwards, and Alfindo (A. Merritt), which shifted out on jumping away. Private Kiss (G. Colless) was slow to begin. Aurora Magic (J. Taylor) had a tendency to lay out when racing wide. Alfindo (A. Merritt) and Bulky Boy (R. Goltz) laid out rounding the home turn. Macreedy (S. Seamer) raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Travellers Rest, which finished a distant last after travelling wide, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Following his ride in race 4, L. Cassidy was examined by the club's doctor and stood down from his remaining engagements.

Race 5:

3yo Maiden Plate - 1000m
1st - Nikki Beach; 2nd - Foxy Fred; 3rd - Galactic Spirit

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Danny Craven: “Mate, it was a nice run. We drew out wide, one from the outside. Ended up getting across, sitting one off the fence behind the leaders. Got the run of the race. Then when we straightened up, just come out past the leaders. Then it was just a matter of holding on.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Nikki Beach): 3.80 in to 2.80.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Smarties was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon at the barriers at the request of its rider, A. Pattillo, and subsequently cleared to race. Trainer S. Dwyer was advised that Northbank, which was slow to begin and took no competitive part in the race, must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start. Foxy Fred (R. Wiggins) was slow to begin. Tailoraymi (R. McMahon) and Smarties (A. Pattillo) were tightened for room on jumping away between Over The Page (M. Paget) and Nikki Beach (D. Craven), which shifted in. Near the 600m, Charter Boat (B. Pengelly) improved up onto the heels of Demonstrator (M. Hellyer) and when being steadied shifted out, making contact with the hind quarters of Orientelle (I. Fry). Charter Boat then had to be steadied from the heels of Demonstrator for some distance thereafter. At the same stage, Whykiki (M. Palmer) had to be steadied when tightened for room between Ben’s Choice (A. Taylor), which shifted in, and Over Te Page (M. Paget), which shifted out and away from Orientelle. Leaving the 350m, Charter Boat was momentarily held up for clear running on the heels of the tiring Maple Leaf (G. Colless). Near the 200m, Tailoraymi (R. McMahon) was tightened for room by Smarties (A. Pattillo), which shifted in and away from Foxy Fred (R. Wiggins) when that horse shifted in to obtain clear running. Trainer B. Baldwin's stable representative was advised that Maple Leaf, which compounded badly over the concluding stages, would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start, and also must obtain a veterinary clearance for the gelding before racing again. Ben’s Choice (A. Taylor) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 6:

CG&E Class 3 Handicap - 1300m
1st - Fielding; 2nd - Jovelon; 3rd -Facundo

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Anthony Merritt: “We drew wide. He is a speed horse. There was no point in trying to hold her back in so we just went straight to the front. He can pull a bit too and when he gets to the front you really have to grab hold of him. But he’s a funny horse because he hasn’t got a sprint at the end. So you’ve got to wind him up again pretty soon, so that he can just sort of keep going. He did it well here.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Fielding): 7.00 out to 7.50.
Favourite (Blue Jupiter): 2.25 out to 2,50. Finished seventh.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Spirito Gentil (B. El-Issa) was tightened for room on jumping away between Spirito Volante (B. Pengelly), which was taken out by Facundo (R. McMahon), and Bang The Castle (N. Thomas), which shifted in. Fielding (A. Merritt) was slow to begin. Near the 1000m, Alright Man (R. Stewart) had to be steadied from the heels of Fielding, which shifted in. Media Fund (S. Seamer) raced wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Blue Jupiter, apprentice C. McIver stated that after being slowly away, he felt that he was going to be trapped 3 wide and therefore restrained the horse in an endeavour to find a position closer to the fence. This resulted in him settling the horse further back than anticipated. C. McIver added that he was then forced to commence a forward move from the 500m without cover and, in his opinion, given the circumstances, Blue Jupiter performed creditably. Trainer L. Birchley was of a different view and was of the opinion that whilst the jockey may have been a victim of circumstances, he felt that the horse did not finish the race off as it had previously done and was of the view that Blue Jupiter may not have backed up from its most recent start seven days ago. A post race veterinary examination of Blue Jupiter failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 7:

Class 3 Handicap - 1500m
1st - Cajun Moon; 2nd - Seraphino; 3rd - Ardmilan

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Pat Duff: “As a young horse, as a three-year-old, I thought she was going to make a really good filly. She beat that filly Dirty and No Limit and I thought she was going real well. She had a little injury to her whither and we gave her a long spell. She come back and she hasn’t shown me anything, you know. This was the last. We said if she can’t put in today ... well, she was on notice. So she just redeemed herself. She just saved herself from the breeding barn.”

Apprentice jockey Michael Hellyer: “She’s back in form. You know on her day she’ll win by four (lengths). She’s a really good mare, but she’s had problems. I wouldn’t say she is quite over it yet but that’s a start anyway to show that she is worth keeping just that little bit longer. The pace was just brilliant. They went very fast in front. She’s not really a sit and sprint mare. She just keeps whacking away. With the pace as hard as they went today, she was able to just cruise around the turn, peel off them, keep whacking away and get there. “

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Cajun Moon): 10.00 out to 11.00
Favourite (Seraphino): 3.00 out to 3.20. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Don Carmello (B. Payne) jumped away awkwardly. Near the 1000m, In Niugini (R. Stewart) improved up on to the heels of Cajun Moon (M. Hellyer) and had to be steadied. Approaching the home turn, Indiana Storm (G. Colless) commenced to weaken and shifted out, making contact with the outside fence and shortly after collapsed. The veterinary surgeon reported that Indiana Storm had suffered a suspected heart attack. Jockey G. Colless was transported to Royal Brisbane Hospital with injuries to his left foot.

Race 8:

Class 4 Handicap - 1000m
1st - Public Nuisance; 2nd - Brer Fox; 3rd - Hail Free

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Louise White: “Heather Burgess used to train him. I’m very good friends with her and she owns the horse with her parents. When Heather wanted to take a break from training, she gave me the chance to train the horse and it was his first run for me today so it is a great result.”

Public Nuisance made it back to back wins here. The gelding gave his then trainer Heather Burgess a winning send-off when saluting at the Sunshine Coast on October 5, and here he kick-started the career of Louise White, handing his new trainer a win on the first occasion that she sent out a runner.

Jockey Ric McMahon: “It was a pick-up ride because Larry (Cassidy) couldn’t ride it, so it was a bonus for me. I’d seen its runs in its earlier prep, and it’s a nice horse. I think he has come back a bit better than he was too. He jumped and he travelled good. I got held up a little bit, just coming down past the 250m, but when one dropped off I was able to come out and he hit the line good. He did a good job to win here.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Hodges Street (D. Craven), which was fractious in the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to race. Red Enzo (M. Heagney) was slow to begin. Near the 500m, Red Enzo (M. Heagney) improved up on to the heels of Hail Free (M. Hellyer) and had to be steadied. Hail Free shifted out near the 400m and made contact with Brer Fox (B. Evans). Leaving the 300m, Public Nuisance (R. McMahon) was momentarily held up on the heels of Jay Low Girl Girl (B. El-Issa). Passing the winning post, M. Hellyer, rider of Hail Free, allowed his mount to shift in, placing Hodges Street restricted room. A short distance later, Brer Fox shifted in, taking Hail Free in on to Hodges Street, causing that runner further tightening. Both M. Hellyer, rider of Hail Free, and B. Evans, rider of Brer Fox, were severely reprimanded.

SUNSHINE COAST REVIEW (SUN, FEB 01)

A review of the meeting held at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, February 1.

Race 1:

3yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1000m
1st - Beautiful Memory; 2nd - Lots Of Allure; 3rd - Zameliha

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Pat Duff: “She raced well first-up and then she just didn’t fire. She seemed to train off a bit. We gave her a couple of starts, but she didn’t fire. We then gave her a nice spell and she’s come back and she trialled very well at Deagon. She won a nice trial and sort of put the writing on the wall a bit. (Apprentice jockey) Michael Hellyer’s just transferred to me. That was his first winning ride for me. I put the feelers out for him and he was keen to come to Queensland. I think he has got a future. He is a well presented boy. I think he has got plenty of talent and, with a bit more learning, I think he can make the grade.”

Apprentice jockey Michael Hellyer: “First winner for the boss ... it was great. This horse galloped on Thursday and she worked really well. Pat (Duff) did tell me before the race that she was probably just a bit fat, but to give her every chance anyway and she might go on and win. She travelled beautiful around the turn. I peeled off around their backs. You know, when I asked, she went. She showed a real good dash. She was inclined to lay in halfway down the straight, but, um, I put the stick in the right hand, straightened up and just went away with it. She just probably knocked up a bit the last 100m, but she should go on with it. She’s only about seventy-five, eighty percent fit. She’ll win more races.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Beautiful Memory): 2.80 out to 3.20.
Favourite (Lots Of Allure): 1.80 out to 2.10 in to 2.05. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The start of this race was delayed due to Barramundi rearing in the barriers and having to be examined by the club's veterinary surgeon. Barramundi was cleared to start. A warning was issued to the connections of Barramundi regarding its barrier manners. Nobody’ s Friend (K. Cunningham), Barramundi (A. Badger), Manihi Freeze (M. Heagney), Brits Star (R. Hancock) and Elevarte (G. Baker) were all tightened for room at the start between Lots Of Allure (K. Pope), which shifted out, and Beautiful Memory (M. Hellyer), which shifted in. M. Hellyer, rider of Beautiful Memory, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Barramundi and Manihi Freeze both lost ground as a result of this incident. Approaching the 600m, Rock Our World (E. Wilkinson) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Beautiful Memory, which shifted in. M. Hellyer, rider of Beautiful Memory, was advised to exercise more care. Beautiful Memory was inclined lay in under pressure over the concluding stages. Near the 100m, Brits Star had to be steadied from the heels of Lots Of Allure, which shifted out. Elevarte (G. Baker) raced wide throughout, and Our Girl Giggles (D. Van Bekkum), which was inclined to lay out, also raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Barramundi revealed minor lacerations to the off hind stifle.

Race 2:

QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate - 1200m
1st - Rovert; 2nd - Regal Prince; 3rd - Grey Gem

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Ray McCall: “We were a bit worried early in the straight (when Rovert was back behind a line of horses), but we knew if the run would come he would beat them ... but it was just a bit of a worry if he was going to get through them or not, you know. Well Brownie (jockey Damian Browne) rode the winner last time when we came second and he said if we had been where he was on the track, we would have won that day. But we were in on the soft part. So he (Browne) wanted to get on him as quick as he could.
“He was up to 1200m today. Maybe he’ll go 1300m ... he might even get 1400m. We raced his mother, Dancing Lou. She was flat getting 1000m. But her grandmother ... she started favourite in the Pelican waters here one day. She won at Doomben over 1350, so we might a still have a bit of leeway to work with distance-wise.”

Jockey Damian Browne: “I was never really worried. I did get held up a little bit early in the straight, but it was just a matter of getting some clear room. I knew I was on the best horse in the race and he was full of running. I just needed to be a little bit patient. As soon as I got clear running it was all over.”

Rovert’s breakthrough win came in his eighth start and followed on a run of three consecutive second place finishes.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Rovert): 1.55 steady.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Comeonwillie (G. Butler) was slow to begin. My Whippy (E. Wilkinson) began awkwardly and made heavy contact with Miss Attanagh (A. Pattillo), resulting in Miss Attanagh becoming unbalanced and shifting out across the heels of My Whippy and having to be steadied. Passing the 800m, Comeonwillie commenced to over-race and was forced to steady from the heels of Jester’s Flute (A. Spinks) and as a result shifted wider on the track. Comeonwillie then raced wide from that point. Tora San (M. Hellyer) was inclined to over-race for a short distance approaching the 700m. Near the 700m, Mr Whippy (E. Wilkinson), which was inclined to over-race, was tightened for room between Grey Gem (O. Turpin) and Squirmy (K. Cunningham), which shifted in. K. Cunningham, rider of Squirmy, was reprimanded. Approaching the 400m, Tora San was momentarily held up for clear running on the heels of the tiring Squirmy. Rovert (D. Browne), which was momentarily held up for clear running approaching the 400m, shifted out and in doing so made contact with Ferengi (N. Thomas), hampering that horse and forcing it wider on the track. D. Browne, rider of Rovert, was severely reprimanded in relation to this incident. Squirmy and Jester’s Flute raced wide throughout.

Race 3:

3yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1400m
1st - More Than Primed; 2nd - Famous Cry; 3rd - Princess of Monaco

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Bruce Hill: “Yeah, he’s always shown a bit. He’s been a very delicate horse. He’s got a bit stronger this time in, but he has still got a lot of strengthening to do. He did go good at Magic Millions last time and has gone on with it here second-up, stepping up in distance, so he could measure up. We gave him that long layoff just to allow him time to develop. Last time in, like there’s not much of him now, but last time there was even less of him. He wasn’t flash at all, but he was still running fair races.” More Than Primed ended his last preparation with two runner-up finishes. “He’s got terrific breeding. Like everything out of the mare has won, and some of them have won good races too.”

Jockey Paul Hammersley: “He’s still putting it together this horse. He did well to take that gap. In the end he got there good. It’s good to go away with a win because this is my last Sunshine Coast meeting for a while. Next Sunday is my going away party so I won’t be coming up here.”

Paul Hammersley leaves Queensland on February 10 to take up a three month riding contract in Macau.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (More than Primed): 2.90 out to 3.10.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Blue Ego (M. Hellyer) and Free Bounty (D. Van Bekkum) were slow to begin. Approaching the 600m, Famous Cry (E. Wilkinson) shifted out to avoid the tiring Free Bounty (D. Van Bekkum) and raced wide from that point onwards. Leaving the 500m, Blue Ego (M. Hellyer) improved on to the heels of the tiring Free Bounty (D. Van Bekkum) and as a result was forced to check and shifted out, making contact with the hind quarters of Jacka (A. Pattillo), which also became awkward in this incident. More Than Primed (P. Hammersley) was held up between the 500m and 400m. All Spiced Up (O. Turpin), Breathin’ Easy (M. Radecker) and I’m All Yours (R. Hancock) raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Free Bounty revealed the gelding had pulled up slightly lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer K. Hill was advised that she must produce a veterinary clearance for Free Bounty prior to its next race start.

Race 4:

Class 3 Plate - 1000m
1st - Sleepy Jackson; 2nd - Sharufa; 3rd - Onasong

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Co-trainer Bruce McLachlan: “He is a good honest horse. He likes a bit of give in the ground and he likes the track here. I think he is basically a 1000m or 1100m horse. He just got beaten in a photo once before over 1200m, but this 1000m suited him and I think the shorter sprint is his go.”

Sleepy Jackson has now won four out of six at the track and is unbeaten in three starts over the track and distance.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Sleepy Jackson): 2.20 out to 2,50.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORTEXTRACT:
Sharufa (P. Hammersley) was slow to begin. Approaching the 700m, Craiglea Maiden (M. Speers) improved on to the heels of Sleepy Jackson (O. Turpin) and had to be steadied and as a result shifted in, tightening the running of Raspberry Licorice (R. Mason), which had to be steadied. Raspberry Licorice was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn. Periander (M. Hellyer) and Miss Echelon (G. Baker) raced wide throughout.

Race 5:

Class 2 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Foreshore; 2nd - Sigurd; 3rd - Two And A Kick

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Trevor Miller: “For a horse that had over twelve months out with a bad leg, he’s won well today. He’s a hard pulling horse and he’s been a very hard horse to get fit ... a lot of swimming and just galloping him and racing. He’s only just recently got fit now, you know. Having said that I did think he was a bit unlucky last time. Today it came together.”

Winner (Foreshore): 3.20 out to 4.20.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Certiori (O. Turpin), which was slow to begin, was tightened for room shortly after the start between Rory’s Rapper (M. Heagney) and Benraggazo (A. Spinks), which was taken in by Backstroke (N. Thomas). Red Shadow (E. Wilkinson), which had a tendency to over-race approaching the 1100m, had to be steadied from the heels of Backstroke (N. Thomas) and shifted out, making contact with Two And A Kick (P. Hammersley). Approaching the 300m, Backstroke (N. Thomas) was momentarily tightened for room between Benragazzo (A. Spinks) and Tully Tenor (G. Baker). Leaving the 300m, Rory’s Rapper (M. Heagney) shifted out abruptly to avoid the heels of Maharishi (J. Kropp), which shifted in under pressure. Two And A Kick and Certiori raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Allanact failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 6:

Class 1 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Heartsun; 2nd - Waitaseq; 3rd - Pull The Wool

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Stewart Mackinnon: “It helps when three horses are withdrawn at the barrier, but I think he would have won anyway. He’s got a lot of raw ability. We’ll just keep going slowly. We’re not going to put any pressure on the horse for a while. We just trying to teach him to settle in his races. I think he’ll get 1400m to a mile later on. There’s no hurry.”

Jockey Damian Browne: “I don’t think it mattered too much what happened at the start. The whole objective today was to try and teach him a little bit. He’s still a big, green baby, but he’s got a bright future. He seems to loaf a bit when he gets to the front, but it’s how he got there that counts. I think he is going to be a class horse later on but, like I say, at the moment he is still a big baby with plenty to learn.”

The lightly raced Heartsun made it back-to-back wins here. The gelding has only run four times and remains unbeaten in two goes on the turf track at the Sunshine Coast.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Heartsun): 1.90 in to 1.70 out to 1.80.
The winner was the favourite. There was a 34c deduction on the win/place payout due to three runners being withdrawn at the start.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
La Bellashee became fractious in the barriers, lashed out and reared over in the barriers. Soulgen and Azzmy Witness, which were in adjoining stalls were injured in this incident. Heinemann was advised that he would be required to provide a barrier certificate and veterinary clearance for La Bellashee prior to its next race start. Mr G. Kennedy, trainer of Azzmy Witness, Mr M. Mair, trainer of Soulgen, were advised that they would be required to provide veterinary clearances for their horses. Vettori’s Image (A Spinks) and Logans Hero (S Apthorpe) were both slow to begin. Waitaseq (J Wood) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 7:

Open Handicap - 1200m
1st - Craiglea Warrior; 2nd -Feelin Dandy; 3rd - Watchyerback

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Peter Fleming: “He hasn’t raced for a month that’s why he was back in distance. He had a hard run, but you know he is always going to fight. You can’t argue with nineteen wins. He’s been just great.”

Co-owner Stan Johnston: “He had a wide alley today and that was a pretty tough ask. He didn’t get cover either, which normally brings him undone. At the top of the straight I thought we were stuffed and the jockey would have thought that too. I said we are in trouble here, and I know the jockey was saying, we in trouble here.” Then, with a twinkle in the eye, ... “The last jockey who rode like that had to go to Victoria. He left.
“He really had to do it tough today. All credit to Peter (Fleming), our trainer. That was the horse’s nineteenth win and Peter’s trained him for most of those and he’s has a very close relationship with the horse. ”

Apprentice jockey Mitchell Speers: “Yeah, it was a real tough run. He normally wants cover, but we couldn’t get any today. I couldn’t do much from the alley. They were going too slow to snag him. He was a bit wide but, when I knew he wasn’t going to be able to get any cover, I just made the decision to go forward. We moved up and he just kept kicking, luckily for me.”

West Hawk, the mother of Craiglea Warrior, was put down during the week. She was over twenty years old.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Craiglea Warrior): 4.40 out to 7.50.
Favourite (General Patton): 2.50 out to 3.00. Finished fifth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Shortly after the start, Comic Echo (K. Pope) had to be steadied when tightened for room between Court Adjourned (J. Wood) and Longstreet (B. El-Issa), which was taken in by Slick Trick (M. Hughes).
Near the 1100m, Court Adjourned (J. Wood) and Noreil (R. Wiggins) both over-raced for a short distance. Craiglea Warrior (M. Speers) raced wide in the early stages. Leaving the 800m, Lombardy (P. Hammersley) was forced to steady from the heels of General Patton (C. McIver), which shifted in. A short distance later, General Patton (C. McIver) improved on to the heels of Slick Trick (M. Hughes) and had to be steadied and as a result shifted out, tightening Court Adjourned on to the hind quarters of Craiglea Warrior (M. Speers), which shifted in. Court Adjourned raced wide from that point onwards. M. Speers, rider of Craiglea Warrior, was reprimanded. Noreil (R. Wiggins), Watchyerback (B. Pengelly) and Lombardy (P. Hammersley) were all held up rounding the home turn. Lombardy then continued to be held up until leaving the 300m.

Race 8:

Class 1 Handicap - 1600m
1st - Starelie; 2nd - Damashqui; 3rd - Slepner

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Brian Wakefield: “Did the shouts of the owners damage your eardrums?
“Things have been pretty ordinary on and off the track for a while now. We’ve just had a run of bad luck with horses coming out and different things that have happened, so I hope this is the change of the tide. She’s still green this girl, as your saw when she ran in halfway up the straight. I’ve only had her for three runs. She’s always given the impression that she’s going to shine over a further distance. It’s nice that everything went right today. The other day at Ipswich (over 1350m), it probably didn’t really suit here, but she had to have the run there in preparation for this today and to get this result.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Starelie): 7.00 out to 8.00.
Favourite (Damashqui): 2.50 in to 2.30. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
School Princess was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon at the barriers and cleared to start. Marquis De Roy (M. Palmer) was slow to begin. Sanctuary Red (M. Heagney), Grungle (P. Hammersley) and School Princess (E. Wilkinson) were all tightened for room at the start between Damashqui (D. Browne), which shifted out, and Elshamah (C. McIver), which shifted in. Starelie (R. Wiggins) raced wide in the early stages. School Princess (E. Wilkinson) was inclined to lay out throughout the race.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Elshamah, apprentice C. McIver confirmed his disappointment in the gelding, adding that Elshamah travelled well in the lead however failed to run on when placed under pressure near the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination of Elshamah failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Stewards intend to speak to trainer Mr L. Birchley regarding the performance of Elshamah.

DOOMBEN REVIEW (SAT, JAN 31)

A review of the meeting held at Doomben on Saturday, January 31.

Race 1:

2yo QTIS Handicap - 1010m
1st - Kiss Me Katy; 2nd - Spirit Of Flatley; 3rd - Jeweller's Gem

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Steven O’dea: “She was definitely doing her best work at the line. She’s fairly simple to train. She’s a good, tough filly. I’ve never had any problems with her. Well, this is the actually the first preparation where she has had more than one start, but any work she does she seems to keep improving. She seemed to do it easy here. The last furlong was very impressive. She quickened good. We’ve been talking about her a little bit during the week. The owner would like to run him in the Widden in a fortnight, in Sydney. I said I wanted to reserve my decision until today She couldn’t have been more impressive, I suppose.”

Jockey Ivo Fry: “Well with the Doomben 1000m start, it can be pretty hard if you are drawn wide. We knew we had the best filly in the race. She can be handy if you really want her to be ... and I made her do that today. It was just a matter of given her as easy a run as possible. We didn’t see it as an option to go right back and follow inexperienced horses so we thought we’d use her early. She just took it in her stride and ran away from them. If she goes to Sydney, I’m sure she’d cope pretty good. She is pretty tough. Nothing fazes her. Like I said she’s very professional. We are very happy with her at this stage.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Kiss Me Katy): 1.65 out to 1,75 in to 1.70.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Ancient Dream (R. McMahon) was slow to begin. Swell (E. Wilkinson) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out making contact with the hind quarters of Kiss Me Katy (I. Fry). Bob And Dolly (O. Turpin) jumped away awkwardly and faltered shortly after the start. Miss Rio (J. Cassidy) and Spirit Of Flatley (B. Pengelly) made contact on jumping away. Swell raced ungenerously in the early stages.
Leaving the 900m Jewellers Gem (J. Taylor) and Miss Rio were forced to race in restricted room for a short distance inside of Spirit Of Flatley, which had a tendency to lay in. Approaching the 800m Duckin’ Daisies (K. Cunningham) had to be steadied when tightened for room between Spirit Of Flatley and Kiss Me Katy which shifted in. I. Fry, the rider of Kiss Me Katy was reprimanded under AR. 137(a). Swift Sands (C. Spry) raced wide for the majority of the event. When the pace steadied near the 600m Spirit OF Flatley had to be steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of Kiss Me Katy. As a result, Jeweller’s Gem shifted out hampering Duckin’ Daisies, which had a tendency to lay out. Duckin’ Daisies continued to lay out until entering the home straight. Ancient Dream was momentarily held up for clear running leaving the 400m. Kiss Me Katy shifted out under pressure near the 200m and hampered Spirit Of Flatley which was laying in. J. Taylor, the rider of Jeweller’s Gem, sustained a harmless fall from his mount when returning to the enclosure. B. Pengelly was stood down from his remaining engagements by the Club's doctor following his ride in this event.

Race 2:

Open Handicap - 1010m
1st - Azzaland; 2nd - Simplest; 3rd - Nessuno

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Richie Stephenson (responding to fellow trainer Barry Baldwin’s congratulations): “I only got back what you did to me last time (when Burdekin Blues beat Azzaland).

“We might have a look at something for him in Sydney now. I’ve got him nominated in the Newmarket. I just put him in. It was only wishful thinking, but you have got to be in it to win it. Well you don’t get many that can run that fast ... and the good thing about it, he doesn’t give in! I’m a great believer in what old Jim Griffiths used to say, ‘let them come to you, don’t go to them.’ He can’t do any more than he is doing ... like he had a bit of weight today. Yeah, he has done a good job. He is a damn nice little horse. You have to try a lot before you get one as good as him.”

Jockey Garry Baker: “Today he was back on the dry ground and he just loved it. He was up in the weights today. He was probably badly weighted, but he just kept fighting. I believe he’ll get six furlongs. When he jumps out, he relaxes. He is not just a speed horse. He relaxes good and because of that I think he’ll be as good a horse over 1200m.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Azzaland): 3.50 out to 4.00.
Favourite (Simplest): 2.25 out to 2.50. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Simplest (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout. Near the 600m both Nessuno (C. McIver) and Vive Le Roi (D. Craven) improved up on to the heels of Sequallan (J. Jones) and Azzaland (G. Baker) and had to be steadied. Nericon King (M. Heagney) bled during the event. As this was the second occasion on which Nericon King has bled, the horse will incur a lifetime ban from racing. A swab sample was taken from Nericon King. Following the running of this event the track rating was upgraded to Good 3, to apply retrospectively to this event.

Race 3:

Mares 1MW Handicap - 1200m
1st - Dance Girl Dance; 2nd - Michelle Cafea; 3rd - Savanna La Mar

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kevin Kemp: “He is as honest as the day is long. Very, very honest. Looked how she picked up that last furlong with 58kg. That’s two Saturday winners in a row he (Ric McMahon) has ridden for me. Next week we’ll be back again. There is a $100 000 Fillies and Mares Quality. She’s just a very honest, beautiful mare.”

Jockey Ric McMahon: “She travelled up perfect. She hit a flat spot for about 50m, probably just when we straightened. Then, with the 58kg, she picked nicely. There was enough speed so I could get back. She does everything right. She bounces. She relaxes. Coming to the corner she was just bolting. She will definitely be competitive next week. I’ll take the ride again, hopefully, and we’ll drop a bit in weight, so she should again be very competitive.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Dance Girl Dance): 3.20 out to 3.50.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Approaching the 1000m Savanna La Mar (S. Seamer) shifted in and away from Michelle Cafea (L. Rolls), tightening the running of Daphne Ellen (J. Bowditch) and Where’smine(K. Cunningham). A short distance later Savanna La Mar then had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Michelle Cafea which shifted in. Dance Girl Dance (R. McMahon) shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages.

Race 4:

3yo QTIS Handicap - 1200m
1st - Gag Order; 2nd - Citiwyse; 3rd - Come Said The Boy

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley: “It was a tough test from the barrier. She was entitled to be beaten today being held wide like that. She has just got better with every run. She was still a bit green. I think she’ll really is a blinker horse, but I’ve just been holding back putting them on. I’ve tried to have her learn as much as she can without them. The weight ... the 3kg claim, helps you enormously though. You can just use her a little bit more. She started racing a late because she was always a little backward, but she’s certainly moving in the right direction now.”

Apprentice jockey Chris McIver: “Our plan was to jump out and to try and slot in just off the pace somewhere. We jumped out, we had the outside alley, and there was a little bit of trouble. We just couldn’t get in. Kept going forward and they kept kicking up inside me. Just got stuck three deep. Then we made a run and she responded well. Halfway down the straight she just wanted to run out a little bit. I changed the whip to my left hand and kept her going. If she can get a good alley next start and a little bit more distance, she’ll be hard to beat. She’s definitely go further.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Gag Order): 6.50 steady.
Favourite (Citiwyse): 4.00 in to 3.70. (Finished second).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Guns (O. Turpin) was slow to begin. Leaving the 1000m Citiwyse (L. Cassidy) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Rapid Tricia (Matthew Palmer) which shifted in. CITIWYSE then over-raced at the heels of Rapid Tricia until nearing the 800m. Leaving the 600m Phebetay (J. Taylor) shifted out to improve and in doing so forced Navigation wide on the track. Navigation then raced wide for the remainder of the event. Leaving the 250m PHEBETAY had to be steadied when tightened for room between NAVIGATION (C. Spry) and CITIWYSE, which was taken out by GAG ORDER (C. McIver). Both apprentice A. Taylor (Pashionately Yours) and apprentice O. Turpin (Guns) were reprimanded for the amount of whip they used on their respective mounts over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of Alioop (G. Colless) failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 5:

NMW Handicap - 1615m
1st - Tipsy Piggy; 2nd - Kings Artist; 3rd - Starry Dancer

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin: “He (Larry Cassidy) rode it bad last time and he told me he rode it bad, which I really appreciate. He said he had a ‘brainsnap’ – that was the word he used. Basically he said he’d make amends next time and today he showed what a good jockey he is.”

Jockey Larry Cassidy: “Yeah, I didn’t have my best ride last time, although she is really not an easy horse to ride. She is a difficult ride. I mean, last time mid-race she had her head in the air. I clipped heels a dozen times and I couldn’t get her to come back to me. When her head is up like that it could very easily end up in a fall ... and it made me come out sooner than I would have done normally. If she was racing tractable, I would have stayed there. We still wouldn’t have won. We would have run second (instead of third behind Encosta Tszyu).
“Here today, I did no work at all. Even though I was out wide and still working forward, I didn’t have her under pressure. Realistically, I did no work until the 300m and she went on with it to win well.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Tipsy Piggy): 5.50 out to 6.00.
Favourite (Cassardi): 2.80 out to 3.00. Finished sixth.

STEWARDS REPORTEXTRACT:
Leaving the 1400m Tipsy Piggy shifted in resulting in Oh Canada having to be steadied when taken across the heels of Raffael Nediym (C. McIver). Jockey A. Spinks, the rider of Eleventh Command, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), the careless riding being that near the 1400m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of In Phuket (J. Taylor), forcing In Phuket inwards, resulting in Raffael Nediym, which was racing back and to the inside of that horse, having to be steadied to avoid the heels of In Pucket. A short distance later Eleventh Command continued to shift in resulting in In Phuket having to be checked. A. Spinks's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Thursday, 5 February and expire at midnight on Friday, 13 February 2009. Cuban Dancer over-raced in the early and middle stages. Tipsy Piggy and Davion (S. Seamer) raced wide in the early stages. Oh Canada, Raffael Nediym and Cassardi (J. Bowditch) raced wide throughout. Kings Artist (B. El-Issa) was held up for clear running from rounding the home turn until inside the 200m.

Race 6:

Class 6 Handicap - 1350m
1st - Sir Kingsford; 2nd - Dawn's Pride; 3rd - Go Cart

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Len Bryant: “He’s a proven horse. He’s had a lot of problems but he just keeps going forward now. He had tendon trouble early. We had to give him ten months off. It’s never worried him since. Then he the EI real bad ... and, you know, just little things, like he’s had a haematoma on his hind-quarters for three months. It’s just healed now. He’s very susceptible to colds. You name it, he’s had it. When he dashed away from them I thought it looked pretty good. I was a little concerned right on the line, but anyway he got there. He’s an improving horse. All three runs this prep have been great.”

Jockey Tony Pattillo: “ It was a good game effort ... he really dug deep and put in. I think there is another couple in him so hopefully I can stay on him.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Sir Kingsford): 4.80 in to 4.60.
Favourite (Jumaana): 3.60 out to 3.70. Finished eighth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Sir Kingsford (A. Pattillo) was slow to begin. Dawn’s Pride (O. Turpin) was momentarily held up for clear running on entering the home straight. Approaching the 300m Go Sequalo (S. Scriven) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with Elegant Roi (M. Radecker). Leaving the 250m Elegant Roi shifted in and brushed Go Sequalo on two occasions. Leaving the 200m Dawn’s Pride shifted out hampering the tiring Jumaana (J. Bowditch). The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that Jumaana was found to be coughing following the event. Trainer T. Crane was advised that he must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness, including the results of an endoscopic examination, before the horse is permitted to start again.

Race 7:

Open Handicap - 1615m
1st - Rightson; 2nd - Fulmonti; 3rd - Pentacity

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin: “I stepped him up in distance. Other jockeys who’ve ridden him before must take the credit for that. They all told me he wanted more distance and we determined to try him over more ground.”

Jockey Larry Cassidy (who completed a double for the second successive Saturday meeting): “They went very slow and I had suggested that if we could ride her a little bit closer, because if we got back it would have been very difficult to win that race. I got a lovely run. As I said they went very slow so I was happy to pull out at the 450m or 500m, and then set him alight at the turn and it sort of paid off. It’s easy when they are well trained. I thought I’d go sooner than later, and we just out-sprinted them.”

I suggested to Cassidy that the odds on him winning the Premiership, albeit an unlikely result, were shortening all of the time.

Cassidy: “I’d be about 25-1 wouldn’t I? If I were a punting man I’d go each way.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Rightson): 7.50 steady.
Favourite (Majorca): 5.00 out to 5.50 in to 4.60. Finished fifth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
On jumping away Rightson (L. Cassidy) and Pentacity (P. Hammersley) were tightened for room between Striking Victory (C. Spry) and Malta (R. McMahon) which shifted in. Masai Pride (C. McIver) had to be steadied shortly after the start when tightened for room between Take The Plea (J. Bowditch) and Reincarnation (A. Spinks), both of which shifted ground. Malta raced wide in the early stages. Majorca (S. Scriven) was momentarily held up for clear running upon entering the home straight. Approaching the 250m Striking Victory (C. Spry) shifted out under pressure, taking Secrets Untold (S. Seamer) out on to Malta. Malta, when tiring, continued to shift out resulting in Onalar (O. Turpin) having to be steadied when tightened for room between that horse and Pentacity. In the circumstances stewards took no action. A post-race veterinary examination of Masai Pride failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 8:

E&G 4yo and up 1MW Handicap - 1200m
1st - Ulladulla; 2nd - Heart; 3rd - Monashee Knight

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelly Schweida: “I’ve had a shocker with my run of results recently, although he had a good run the other day. He was only beaten three-and-a-half lengths. He was wide so I thought he’d go well here.”

Jockey Bobby El-Issa: “He’s a nice horse mate. He’s just sort of back-peddled, had a bit of bad luck in his last few starts. Good rider. Good trainer.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Ulladulla): 13.00 out to 17.00
Favourite (Sir Teles): 5.00 in to 4.80. Finished seventh.

STERWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
After making contact with Morning Colours (P. Hammersley), Kyros (S. Seamer) had to be checked shortly after when tightened for room between that horse and Heart (Matthew Palmer), which had been taken out by Mr Heartbreaker (R. McMahon). Monashee Knight (L. Cassidy), Stature (J. Taylor) and Ulladulla (B. El-Issa) all over-raced for a short distance approaching the first turn. Sneaky Squirrel (M. Radecker), Mr Heartbreaker and Lennon (R. Wiggins) raced wide for the majority of the event. Sir Teles (O. Turpin) had difficulty obtaining clear running for the entire length of the home straight. Morning Colours was held up for clear running for a short distance passing the 300m.
