IPSWICH REVIEW (THURS, JAN 15)

A review of the meeting held at Ipswich on Thursday, January 15.

Race 1:

3yo & Up Maiden Plate - 2150m
1st - Straight Shooting; 2nd - Tyrconnell; 3rd - Brilliant Ween

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Apprentice jockey Brent Evans took Straight Shooting back from the wide draw, but he couldn’t get in and remained wide the entire trip. The duo gradually improved their position from the 1000m and they were in contention when the field straightened at the top of the home straight. There was no flash of acceleration though, but rather a grinding performance from Straight Shooting who, in the end, produced a finely timed finish to land his breakthrough victory.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Straight Shooting): 9.00 Steady.
Favourite (Benzine): 2.40 out to 3.00. Finished sixth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Tyrconnell (Matthew Palmer) got its head in the air and jumped away awkwardly. Montaperti (B. Pengelly) missed the start. Rounding the home turn, Tyrconnell shifted out in an effort to improve and brushed Brilliant Ween (J. Bowditch). Brilliant Ween was then held up for clear running until near the 200m. When questioned regarding the performance of Benzine, G. Colless stated that the horse had settled well in running, however after commencing a run three wide from the half mile, the horse was under pressure near the 400m and whilst inclined to lay in, did not finish the race off as expected. Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith agreed that the horse's performance was disappointing and felt that Benzine may be better suited on tracks which are rain affected. The explanation was noted.

Race 2:

Maiden Handicap (Mares) - 1350m
1st - Glennie West; 2nd - Wedding Night; 3rd - Tickle Quick

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Darren Bell: “I said to Matty to put her up there and let her run her own race. When they took off at the 600m I must admit I thought he might have been going a bit early at the time because the mare does have limitations, but obviously it was the right decision. She’s a little bit one-paced, but she is also very honest and will always try hard. I’m still not one-hundred percent certain about what her best distance might be. In here previous two runs she weakened ... but she did work early in those runs which could be why she felt the pinch at the end. At the moment she’s suited to this sort of distance. It allows her to get into the race. I’m hoping she’ll stretch to a mile, but I’m not sure.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Glennie West): 2.10 out to 2.30.
Favourite (All Show): 2.10 out to 2.20. Finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Glennie West (Matthew Palmer) faltered on jumping away. Danetel Miss (J. Warrington) was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, Queen Of The Storm (M. Radecker) was tightened for room between Wedding Night (B. El-Issa) and Prussian Necklace (M. Heagney), which shifted in away from Glennie West. Queen Of the Storm (M. Radecker) was caught three wide without cover for the majority of the race. Prussian Necklace raced three wide for the majority of the event. When questioned as to the performance of All Show, M. Speers stated that the horse could not make any ground from the 700m until straightening due to it having a tendency to lay out. J. Warrington, rider of Danetel Miss, was reprimanded for using his whip on a horse out of contention.

Race 3:

QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate - 1350m
1st - Jersey Joe; - Young Cried Wolf; 3rd - Country Kiss

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Helen Page: “He’s is such a big, beautiful horse. I just love him. We are just allowing him to mature in his own time and he is showing us plenty of promise. We’ve just been stepping him up gradually in distance. With his breeding on his dam’s side, he should go a mile. I think I’ve probably got the biggest of the Falvelons (Jersey Joe) and the smallest (Power Of George) in my yard. I just love the Falvelons . I’ve been very lucky with them."

Jockey Jason Taylor: “It was an effortless win. I rode him in his first race and I’ve ridden him in work. He was green and all over the place when he started out. Yeah, just very green. He’s come back this prep going really well. With that big stride he just left them behind today without even really trying. It was as easy as it looked.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Jersey Joe): 4.00 out to 4.20.
Favourite (Cha Cha Man): 3.00 out to 3.60. Finished tenth and last.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Honour Barney (B. Evans) jumped away awkwardly and missed the start. Leaving the 1200m, Not Declared (A. Taylor) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Flash Romeo (J. Letherby), which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. J. Letherby, rider of Flash Romeo, was severely reprimanded and instructed to provide more clearance in future when crossing. For some distance approaching the 1000m, Country Kiss (G. Colless) got its head up and was inclined to over-race. Young Cried Wolf (M. Speers) was also inclined to over-race for some distance in the vicinity of the 1000m. Also at the same stage, Cha Cha Man (B. Pengelly) was tightened for room when racing between Young Cried Wolf and Our Centurion, which was inclined to lay in. J. Bowditch, rider of Our Centurion, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Cha Cha Man was obliged to race three wide and compounded over the latter stages to finish some distance from the main body of the field. A post race veterinary examination of Cha Cha Man revealed the horse to be lame in the near-side foreleg and connections were informed that a veterinary clearance would be required for Cha Cha Man prior to its next race start.

Race 4:

4yo & Up E&G Maiden Handicap- 1350m
1st - Huss; 2nd - Taimazon; 3rd - Kalenji

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Glen Colless: “He got a pretty soft lead and was basically was allowed to have his own way up front. Then they gave him just enough leeway in the straight to get the result. He was running on empty though so he does have limitations, which is why he’s taken sixteen runs to win. There are a lot of seconds and thirds in his form. He needed things to go his way to get the win and they did today.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Huss): 1.80 Steady.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
For some distance in the vicinity of the 1200m, Kalenji (K. Banks) over-raced, having to be eased from the heels of Ciento Mambo. Leaving the 800m, Little Ombre (J. Warrington) faltered. Jockey K. Banks, rider of the 3rd placegetter, Kalenji, was fined $200 for failing to ride her mount right out to the finish line. A post race veterinary examination of Ciento Mambo revealed the gelding to be suffering from colic and was distressed.

Race 5:

3yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1100m
1st - Your Mate Jimmy; 2nd - All Kiwi; 3rd - Mada

WINNER FEEDBACK:
The Paul Nolan (Jnr) trained Your Mate Jimmy had an ordinary start before settling in midfield. The gelding travelled well and picked up ground easily by holding the inside line in the sweep to the turn. On straightening, jockey Booby El-Issa chose to switch Your Mate Jimmy out around the heels of the leader (Bifocal). The four-year-old then took a while to pick up, but he got the message in time and stretched out with meaning inside the final 100m to put the first notch onto his belt.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Your Mate Jimmy): 10.00 out to 17.00.
Favourite (Royal Saint): 2.20 out to 2.80. Finished eleventh.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Brolga Road (J. Bowditch) and Mada (D. Tanti) missed the start. Our Miss Hearst (Matthew Palmer) attempted to buck shortly after the start and near the 1000m Matthew Palmer was dislodged. Connections of Our Miss Hearst were informed that the filly must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. Royal Saint (G. Colless) hung out on the first turn and the horse continued to hang out, and shortly after straightening Royal Saint was retired from the race. A post race veterinary examination of Royal Saint failed to reveal any abnormalities. Connections were advised that Royal Saint would be required to trial to the satisfaction of the stewards on at least two occasions prior to its next race start.
Near the 200m, Indy Go Gold (J. Warrington) and Love And Happiness (J. Taylor) were tightened for room between No Way Grey (R. Wiggins) and All Kiwi (J. Wood), which hung in. A short distance later, both Indy Go Gold and Love And Happiness had to be checked when tightened for room between No Way Grey, which was taken out by Your Mate Jimmy (B. El-Issa) and All Kiwi, which again hung in. After taking into account the waywardness of All Kiwi, trainer D. Steinbeck was informed that the horse would be required to trial satisfactorily on at least two occasions before resuming racing. A post race veterinary examination of Electrowin revealed the gelding to have sustained an injury to the off-fore tendon. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for Electrowin prior to its next race start.

Race 6:

Class 1 Handicap - 1100m
1st - So Different; 2nd - Bennike; 3rd - Sweed

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Todd Pannell: “She chased very well from the wide gate and got across. I was surprised how easily she got across actually. That put us up with the lead and I elected to sit one out and half a length off the leader (Leapin Lena). She travelled just beautifully. Then in the straight she kept travelling and just finished it off so well. I was really surprised by how well she went. It was a big win, considering she did it at both ends without seeming to be under any pressure. Not many horses can do that.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (So Different): 21.00 out to 26.00.
Favourite (Bennike): 1.60 out to 1.70. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
High Anxiety (S. Bogenhuber) missed the start. Mr Sugaray (G. Baker) blundered and almost fell on jumping away. So Different (T. Pannell) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making heavy contact with Invault (I. French). A short distance later, Beau Forest (M. Heagney), Sweed (G. Colless) and Blue Cruiser (J. Wood) were all severely checked when Invault shifted inwards. Beau Forest (M. Heagney), La Zaha (B. El-Issa) and Diasco (J. Warrington) were trapped wide on the first turn and raced wide for the majority of the event.
Stewards questioned trainer B. Robinson and jockey T. Pannell in relation to the seemingly improved performance of So Different in winning today as compared to the horse's previous start at Toowoomba on 26 December when it finished 9th, beaten 8.6 lengths. Mr Robinson stated he had instructed jockey Pannell to settle So Different midfield, which were similar to the instructions given to jockey J. Murphy at Toowoomba on 26 December, however the horse was tightened on jumping away and as a consequence was obliged to settle back in the field further than had been anticipated on that occasion. Mr Robinson stated that he had only acquired So Different at the commencement of this campaign and in the two starts prior to 26 December, the horse had pleased with its performances despite being beaten. He added that where possible So Different would be ridden similarly, and that whilst there was some improvement on face value today, the horse did suffer interference at its previous start, which may have had an effect on its performance on that occasion. The explanation was noted.
Stewards questioned apprentice A. Taylor as to her riding of Gazillion, in particular between the 700m and 300m. A. Taylor stated that the connections had instructed her to ride the horse back in the field from its wide barrier and to endeavour to take a run through the field rather than be wide. She added that after settling in a rearward position she was reluctant to go wide approaching the home turn and endeavoured to find a run between horses, however she was unable to obtain any runs through the field prior to the point of straightening, and after straightening had to switch across heels in an effort to gain clear running. She added that when clear Gazillion ran home well. Stewards noted A. Taylor's explanation and advised her that her ride lacked some initiative, particularly between the 450m and 350m where the opportunity existed for her to improve her position.
A post race veterinary examination of Invault revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-fore tendon. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for Invault prior to its next race start. A post race veterinary examination of High Anxiety, which tailed the field after missing the start, failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 7:

Class 2 Handicap - 1350m
1st - Hearty Laughter; 2nd - Ladyswood; 3rd - High Dee

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Helen Page (who completed a double on the day with the only two runners she brought to the track): “This one is also by a Glenlogan Park stallion (Show A Heart) and, like our earlier winner, she is also out of a Rory’s Jester mare. She’a a full sister to Big Joker which has won a Listed race already (with John Hawkes) so it’s very exciting. In her last run at the Gold Coast she couldn’t get off the rail and the going was no good there. So we thought we’d get away from that and come here and we’re obviously very happy with the result.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Hearty Laughter): 10.00 in to 8.00 out to 9.00.
Favourite (Revered Ruler): 2.70 out to 2.80. Finished sixth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Two And A Kick (N. Day) shifted out on straightening and made contact with Go Nugget (D. Tanti). Shortly after straightening, Revered Ruler (G. Colless) attempted to shift out from behind the heels of Rory’s Rapper and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of the tiring Diamondsaucash (W. Clasohm). In this incident, Diamondsaucash shifted out and made contact with Two And A Kick (N. Day). After passing the 200m, Rory’s Rapper shifted out when tiring, taking Revered Ruler outwards, resulting in that horse again making heavy contact with Diamondsaucash, which in turn shifted out resulting in Two And A Kick having to be checked when forced across the heels of Ladyswood (T. Pannell). Both M. Heagney, rider of Rory’s Rapper, and G. Colless, rider of Revered Ruler, were severely reprimanded and instructed to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Stewards questioned starter Mr R. Corvi and jockeys B. El-Issa and N. Day as to comments made over the public address system by jockey El-Issa through the microphone placed at the barriers. The matter was adjourned to a date to be fixed in order that further investigations could be made.

Race 8:

Class 2 Handicap - 1666m
1st - Steady Poplar; 2nd - Uther; 3rd - Napper Tandy

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Steele Ryan: “I’ve always had a good opinion of him mate. He had a wind op before this prep and he’s travelling well now. I was very confident here ... and I’ll be sticking with Joe (Bowditch). He’s doing a really good job for me.”

Jockey Joe Bowditch: “Yeah, he certainly had the form to win it. He still got to learn how to gallop properly though so there should be plenty of improvement to come.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Steady Poplar): 5.50 in to 3.30.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
When restrained approaching the first turn, Buena Chava (G. Colless) got its head up and raced ungenerously for a short distance. Leaving the 400m, Whispering Gypsy (A. Taylor) was buffeted between Scoliera Street (L. Rolls) and Fly Misty (G. Baker), and a short distance later had to be steadied from the heels of the tiring Buana Chava. Buena Chava compounded on straightening and tired over the concluding stages. Trainer A. Bailey undertook to notify stewards of anything that may come to his notice that had a bearing on the disappointing run in the days following the event. Radio Star (K. Banks) and School Princess (T. Pannell) raced wide throughout.

EAGLE FARM REVIEW (WED, JAN 14)

A review of the meeting held at Eagle Farm on Wednesday, January 14.

Winning a race seems to be of little consequence when you watch medics treating a jockey after a serious fall. That was the case at Eagle Farm after the seventh race in which Oscar The Great had crashed to the turf sending jockey Jason Holder flying out of the saddle. Holder was taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital where the latest reports (as of the morning of January 15) indicate he is in a serious but stable condition.

STEWARDS SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT EXTRACT:
From ITC, 10.1.09 - Race 7
Trainer P. Balzen reported that Latin Idol had not pulled up well following this event and would now be sent for a spell. He further added that, in his opinion, the gelding races better during the cooler months and it would now be his intention to restrict the horse's future racing campaigns to those periods.

Race 1:

4yo & Up Maiden Plate - 1500m
1st - Eternal Star; 2nd - Chevaux Vapeur; 3rd - Langtime

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Jason Taylor: ‘I’ve ridden her two times before and she went just terrible for me. Then they put Todd (Pannell) on and she went quite well. They said to me, come on, ride her again ... and this time she travelled well the whole way. She was full of running and a lot more mature than when I last rode her.”

PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Eternal Star): 3.50 out to 4.40.
Favourite (Chevaux Vapeur): 2.20 out to 2.30.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Approaching the 600m, Ellen Rosina (T. Treichel) shifted out to improve and in doing so forced Langtime (M. Hellyer) wider on the track. B. Pengelly, rider of Chevaux Vapeur pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that nearing the 300m, he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Gangbusters, which resulted in Gangbusters being checked. Jockey Pengelly was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 17 January and to expire at midnight, 28 January 2009.
Stewards questioned B. Pengelly regarding the riding tactics adopted on Chevaux Vapeur during the middle stages of the event, in particular a point leaving the 600m where Eternal Star (J. Taylor) was able to move away from the rails ahead of Chevaux Vapeur, which resulted in Chevaux Vapeur being held up for clear running until reaching the home turn. B. Pengelly explained that at that point of the race he was concerned as to whether Ellen Rosina, which was racing in a one-wide position ahead of him, was beginning to yield ground and he anticipated Langtime, which was racing to his outside, making a forward move. However when that did not eventuate, he was held up for clear running. After considering his explanation, and the evidence from trainer Mr N. McBurney, the explanation was noted. A post race veterinary examination of Eternal Star revealed the mare had bled from one nostril. Trainer K. Smith was advised that the mare must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop before stewards.

Race 2:

Class 4 Handicap - 1500m
1st - Encosta Tszyu; 2nd - Eddie Rapido; 3rd - Best Bid

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Brian Smith: “He just a lovely horse to train. You know for a horse to improve he’s got to be ridden the same way if circumstances allow and he’s got to learn where the line is. Most of all, he’s got to be able to relax. We actually wanted to be closer to the lead here, but they went too quick and Scott (Galloway) had the brains to let them go and let the horse race where he was comfortable. Scott is just riding so well for me. When he asked the colt for his effort he did it easy. He wasn’t blowing at all afterwards. He’s really going well. I think we are going to have a few nice options with him in the future.”

Jockey Scott Galloway: “I was going to box seat but they went that quickly we ended up in midfield. I was always comfortable where I was though and he was very relaxed and responded to everything I asked of him. He’s been running as a gelding this preparation and that’s obviously made a difference, but Brian (Smith) has also worked out the key to him and is getting the best out of horse.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Encosta Tzsyu): 1.60 out to 1.70.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Reef Bonanza (R. Mason) and Peaceful Honour (S. Seamer) were both slow to begin. Just A Classic (J. Holder) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 3:

3yo Maiden Handicap - 1600m
1st - Mr Nicholas; 2nd - Jensway; 3rd - Northern Apache

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Heathcote: “He’s always had the ability to gallop, but he has just lacked the physical strength to compete properly. He did appear to improve nicely here, but having said that he hasn’t had things go his way in some of his previous races ... bad barrier, slow track ... things like that. I think he’s still going to need more time to fill out before he races to his full potential. Chances are we’ll give him February off and bring him back after that ... hopefully a lot stronger.”

Jockey Ric McMahon: “He wasn’t pulling so hard this time. He settled well enough. He always gets back in his races, but he travelled well here and he let down good. I kept at him a bit in the closing stages because he is a bit of a thinker, and I didn’t want him getting any ideas.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Mr Nicholas): 4.80 out to 5.00.
Favourite (Sydney Or The Bush): 2.20 out to 3.50 in to 3.00. Finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Approaching the 200m, Arizona Sunset (M. Radecker) shifted in and bumped Sydney Or The Bush (G. Colless). A short distance later, Arizona Sunset was crowded for room between Mr Nicholas and Sydney Or The Bush (G. Colless), which shifted out.

Race 4:

3yo & Up Handicap - 1200m
1st - Age Of Heroes; 2nd - Rich Baby; 3rd - Loves A Challenge

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Glen Colless: “I was going to go back. But then nothing wanted to go forward and there were three in a line, so I just gave him a bit of a squeeze. It was like I’d just pushed a button. He got to the front so quickly I thought he wouldn’t pull up, but I pushed another button and he came right back to me with his head on his chest. Then when I asked him to go again in the straight he again responded immediately. He’s just a natural. I’ve done a fair amount of work with him and I thought he was a miler. I’m sure he’ll do the mile but, after this, I might have to reassess what he might be able to do as a sprinter.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Age Of Heroes): 3.00 out to 3.20.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Local Talent (D. Craven) Age Of Heroes (G. Colless) were caught wide in the early stages. Approaching the 800m, Loves A Challenge (J. Bowditch) improved up on to the heels of Pink Sapphire (J. Taylor) and had to be steadied. Near the 800m, Our Indian Outlaw (A. Spinks) had to be steadied off the heels of Age Of Heroes (G. Colless), which shifted in. G. Colless, rider of Age Of Heroes, was advised to exercise more care. Our Indian Outlaw (A. Spinks) raced wide for the majority of the event. A post race veterinary examination of Unsupervised revealed the horse was suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer K. Schweida was advised that Unsupervised must trial satisfactorily and produce the results of an ECG prior to its next race start.
The veterinary surgeon also reported that Our Indian Outlaw was suffering from respiratory distress. Trainer T. Crane was advised that he would be required to provide to stewards the results of an endoscopic examination and also a veterinary clearance for the gelding prior to its next race start.

Race 5:

Class 4 Handicap - 1800m
1st - I'm So Stunning; 2nd - Innovator; 3rd - Father Dex

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin: “When I’m So Stunning came into the yard she looked awful. I phoned the owners and told them that I was going to call her Ugly Betty and they weren’t so pleased about that. She’s going well now ... likes the distance. We’ve got no special plans for her. We’ll just take things as they come. Like everybody else she went through EI and she’s had things to deal with. This is her first clean preparation. She’s doing well.”

Jockey Jason Taylor (who completed a double for the day). “She does like the distance (1800m). She relaxed pretty well and I just followed Heathcote’s horse (Innovator) through and stayed with him in the straight just, sort of ready to pounce. Then I just pulled her out and thought ‘away we go.’ From there, if she was good enough, she was going to win. She did it well.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (I’m So Stunning): 3.80 out to 4.60.
Favourite (Music Lover): 2.60 out to 3.60. Finished ninth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Cajun Moon (M. Radecker) was caught wide in the early stages. Near the 600m, The Clandy Man Can (S. Bogenhuber) improved up on to the heels of Telestah La Vistah (M. Paget) and as a consequence shifted out, forcing Cajun Moon wider on the track. Cajun Moon was obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Music Lover, G. Colless stated that the horse travelled well until the 200m, and when asked for an effort, failed to respond to his riding and yielded ground in the run to the finish. Mr Bailey confirmed his disappointment with the horse's performance and advised that consideration would be given to the gelding's current racing program. A post race veterinary examination of Music Lover failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 6:

F&M Class 3 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Linear; 2nd - Queen Of Asia; 3rd - Born To Hunt

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Lawrie Mayfield-Smith: “It’s quite strange because I used to watch this horse on television and I thought I’d love to get hold of her and just ride her quiet. Anyway, after a while, out of the blue, a bloke rung up and asked if I could take on a horse. He said a few of our owners want to send you up a horse. I asked what I it was and he said Linear. I said ... ah beautiful.
“I just told the boy to ride her quiet. Just give her cover ... don’ bustle her or anything. Just slot her in somewhere and then she’ll find the line. He did exactly that. He had her one off. Beautiful ride.”

Linear is unbeaten in three starts for the Mayfield-Smith stable.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Linear): 4.60 out to 6.00.
Favourite (Queen Of Asia): 3.00 in to 2.60. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Cicarelli (A. Taylor) and Linear (L. Rolls) were tightened for room on jumping away between Daddy’s Little Girl (T. Pannell) and Born To Hunt (J. Bowditch), both of which shifted ground. Coxless (M. Hellyer) over-raced in the middle stages of the event. Approaching the 200m, Crownalot (N. Day) was tightened for room when racing between Born To Hunt (J. Bowditch) and Cicarelli (A. Taylor), which was taken out by Queen Of Asia (G. Colless). Leaving the 200m, the whip of G. Colless, rider of Queen Of Asia, became tangled with the reins until near the 100m, resulting in him being unable to ride his mount right out at that stage of the race. Crownalot (N. Day) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 7:

C G & E Class 3 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Dreaming Cash; 2nd - Laurels; 3rd - Mossbemad

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Kelly: “He’d only had ten runs before this. He’s taken a little bit of time to mature. No, we won’t be stepping him up in distance again. We tried that last prep and it didn’t work. He’s a sprinter.”

Apprentice jockey Luke Rolls (who completed a double on the day): We got across from a wide alley. I got across fairly easy, just worse than midfield one off the fence. There were a couple of good chances going forward in front of me so I just tracked them and tracked them. Then I got a split in-between runners and he finished it off really well.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Dreaming Cash): 4.80 out to 6.50.
Favourite (Laurels): 2.40 in to 2.30 out to 2.60. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Chaski (G. Colless) sprung its off-fore late which required farrier attention. Cuban Dancer (M. Paget) was slow to begin. Kids Show (S. Galloway) was tightened for room on jumping away between Oscar The Great (J. Holder) and Loose Unit (J. Taylor), which shifted in after beginning awkwardly. Near the 1000m, Kids Show (S. Galloway) was tightened for room by Dreaming Cash (L. Rolls), which shifted in. Leaving the 500m, Laurels (M. Palmer) shifted out away from Chaski (G. Colless) and in doing so inconvenienced Loose Unit, which shifted out, hampering Don Carmello (B. Payne). Dreaming Cash (L. Rolls) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.
Near the 300m, Oscar The Great (J. Holder) fell when racing between Benragazzo (A. Spinks) and Spirito Volante (J. Bowditch). An inquiry will be held into the matter at a later date due to J. Holder being transported to hospital to receive further medical attention.
Don Carmello (B. Payne) and Benragazzo (A. Spinks) raced wide for the majority of the event. Little Sai Wan required veterinary attention after the race when the horse displayed signs of being in an extremely distressed condition on return to the raceday stalls.

Race 8:

Open Handicap - 1200m
1st - Roman Squire; 2nd - Sam's Express; 3rd - Ready When You Are

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Brad Pengelly: “He’s been out of form for so long before this it’s just nice to see him recapture some sort of form. He felt good. Not the same of old ... he’s not there yet, but he’s on the right track anyway. It’s up to him now to capitalise on that and take it to the next level.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Roman Squire): 4.60 out to 5.50.
Equal favourite (Sam’s Express): 5.00 in to 4.60 out to 4.80. Finished second.
Equal favourite (Noble Gaze): 4.60 out to 4.80. Finished seventh.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Mount Vernon (A. Taylor) began awkwardly. Spy Zaim (G. Baker) was tightened for room on jumping away between Portland Bay (M. Palmer) and Roman Squire (B. Pengelly), which shifted in. Near the 700m, Roman Squire (B. Pengelly) over-raced at the heels of Messiaen (G. Colless). A short distance later, Tropiqualo (S. Bogenhuber) shifted in, tightening What A Tale (A. Merritt) and Ready When You Are (J. Taylor). What A Tale (A. Merritt) had difficulty obtaining clear running between the 350m and 250m. General Patton (C. McIver) and Sam’s express (O. Turpin) raced wide for the majority of the event. B. Pengelly, rider of Roman Squire, was fined $200 for returning to scale overweight.

SUNSHINE COAST REVIEW (SUN, JAN 11)

A review of the meeting held at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, January 11.

Race 1:

3yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1600m
1st - Amaizemea; 2nd - Craiglea Ruby; 3rd - Dane Raider

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Gafa: “Mate, I had no doubt I would win this race. He is a full brother to Amaizcay. No one’s mentioned that yet. I owned and bred Amaizcay as well. He won me $200 000 ... he won the Guineas here over a mile.
“The only reason I took the blinkers off (referring to the gear change) was I trialled him here on Tuesday. I took the blinkers off for the trial. He jumped out, went to second possie, straightened up and won by ten. When he went to the front, he started looking around, he give him one slap of the whip and he went straight as a dye and just blew them away. Now, in his trials he always goes to the front. Amaizcay did the same thing. So I though, bugger it. I’ll see if I can take the blinkers off to actually maybe have him a bit closer in races, because he gets back in his races, but that’s the way he runs (off the speed) ... and that jockey (Andrew Spinks) knows how he runs. Amaizcay was the same mate.

Amaizemea’s breakthrough win came in his ninth start. I asked his trainer if the horse had taken a while to get going.

Gafa: “I cut him two starts back. His last three starts, this one and the previous two runs, he had his nuts in before then. What he was doing is coming out and wanting to savage horses all of the time so I had to cut him. I didn’t really want to. I would have preferred to keep him as a colt because of his breeding, but I had to cut him.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Amaizemea): 6.00 in to 5.50.
Favourite (Dane Raider): 4.00 out to 4.20. Finished third.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Stewards intend to interview jockey C. Whiteley regarding him being declared as the rider of Gangbusters and Let’s Deal. Jockey J. Cook was substituted as the rider of both horses. Craiglea Ruby (K. Cunningham) jumped away awkwardly, losing ground. Gangbusters (J. Cook) was slow to begin. Craiglea Ruby and Dane Raider (K. Wharton) raced wide from the 600m onwards. Sir Reason (I. Coombes) and Mercent (K. Pope) were both momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn. Sir Reason again had difficulty obtaining clear running during the early stages of the straight. Dane Raider shifted in under pressure in the straight. Hotel California (C. Isdale) and Pay Us (J. Bowditch) raced wide throughout.

Race 2:

Class 3 Plate - 1600m
1st - Tanzill; 2nd - Hell Week; 3rd - Sailor Salute

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Lakey: “You can read too much into the way he parades. That’s just his trait now. He was probably the best he’s been today, but you can’t worry about it as long as he’s putting in the effort. Alan Jones told me he’s trained horses who have sweated up worse than him. He said if that is what they are like, all you can do is get them to the races ... just take them to the races.”

Tanzill has now won two out of his six starts. He also has two runner-up finishes to his credit.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Tanzill): 3.00 out to 3.30.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Chicago Boy (M. Hellyer) shifted out at the start, hampering Sailor Salute (C. McIver), which lost ground. Hell Week (N. Evans) shifted in at the start, making contact with Frisco Darling (J. Brown). The saddle on Akoya slipped during the early stages of the race, placing its rider at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race. Near the 500m, Frisco Darling improved on to the heels of Hell Week and had to be steadied and shifted out. As a result, Sailor Salute and Chicago Boy were both hampered and forced wider on the track. Hell Week was held up for clear running from rounding the home turn until approaching the 200m. N. Thomas, rider of Akoya, accidentally dropped his near-side rein approaching the 50m. A post-race veterinary examination of Chicago Boy, which tailed off, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 3:

3yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1200m
1st - Dual Code; 2nd - Hello Christmas; 3rd – Fireman

WINNER FEEDBACK:
In spite of being held up for a run in the straight, jockey Kelly Purdy made no mistake on the Trevor Bailey trained Dual Code, bringing the well supported favourite, who is a son of Thorn Park, home by a comfortable 1.80 margin.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Dual Code): 2.50 out to 2.80 in to 2.70.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Due to a clerical error, Dual Code was shown in the race book as a 2-year-old when in fact the colt is a 3-year-old. Brigadoon Champ (D. Griffin), which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start when tightened for room between Our Girl Bobby (J. Wood) and Dual Code (K. Purdy), which shifted in. Hello Christmas (S. Bogenhuber) and Top Resource (G. Baker) jumped away awkwardly. Top resource (G. Baker), which was momentarily held up near the 500m, shifted out to obtain clear running and made heavy contact with Our Girl Bobby (J. Wood). Dual Code (K. Purdy) had difficulty obtaining clear running between the 350m and 200m. Maningrey (J. Taylor), Dad’s Boy Blue (J. Piper) and Mark One (O. Turpin) raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Mon Trist revealed the mare had sustained superficial abrasions to the near hind leg.

Race 4:

QTIS 3yo Handicap - 1300m,
1st - Attallus; 2nd - Lilleelavee; 3rd - Miss Monashee

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Shaun Dwyer: “As a young horse he wanted to work with his mouth open and do a little too much. So I worked him in a cross-over (nose band) for a while and then I gave him a couple of runs just to get him going. He did everything reasonably well last start so I thought the cross-over was not really necessary now, and so I took it off.
“Here he was a Maiden in an Open Class 3 race. The field was probably not full of class, but he lacks a lot of experience compared with the horses he was running against, so he’s won on ability. He’s out of a Captain Piper mare so I think he’ll race over 1600m easy and probably over 2000m.”

Jockey Joe Bowditch: “He’s a real professional horse which makes him a nice horse to ride. He is still learning a bit though. He doesn’t really know how to let down and everything he is doing he is doing on raw ability. I think in time he will make a lovely stayer.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Attallus): 7.00 in to 6.00 out to 7.00.
Favourite (Miss Monashee): 2.60 in to 2.30 out to 2.40. Finished third.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Lilleelavee proved difficult to load, causing a delay to the starting time for this race, and then was slow to begin. Trainer Mr F. Adams was advised that he would be required to provide a barrier certificate for Lilleelavee prior to its next race start. Lilleelavee (R. McMahon) and Logans Hero (S. Apthorpe) was slow to begin. Upi Bay (J. Piper) was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn and again near the 100m. Elshamah (K. Wharton) lost its off-fore plate in running.

Race 5:

Class 2 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Aquaterra; 2nd - Larry's Boy; 3rd - Week Nights

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Jason Taylor rode the Bryan Guy trained Aquaterra with patience and good judgement to takes the honours. It was an improved performance from the lightly raced gelding, who was having his second run this preparation.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Aquaterra): 4.40 out to 4.60.
Favourite (Larry’s Boy): 2.70 out to 3.00 in to 2.80. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
App. J. Piper pleaded guilty to a charge under AR92(12) of failing to claim her full allowance on Weeks Nights On. Apprentice Piper was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 3 weeks, to commence at midnight, 1 February - the expiration of a suspension incurred at Nanango on 10 January under AR92(12) - and to expire at midnight, 22 February 2008. Trainer T. Bailey's representative, stablehand Mr L. Rolls, was fined $50 for presenting Larry’s Boy late to the enclosure. AR124 Iza Comin’ (J. Letherby) and Cat Dazzle (S. Bogenhuber) were both severely tightened for room and checked at the start between Maharishi (M. Hughes) and Week Nights On (J. Piper), which shifted out. Miss Kalymnos (T. Treichel) jumped away awkwardly, losing ground. The saddle on Brackin Road slipped near the 1000m, placing its rider, N. Thomas, at a distinct disadvantage for the remainder of the event. Near the 700m, Cat Dazzle (S. Bogenhuber) commenced to over-race and as a result shifted in, making contact with the running rail. Passing the 450m, Cat Dazzle shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so hampered Iza Comin’. Leaving the 400m, J. Piper, rider of Week Nights On, accidentally dropped her whip. Brackin Road (N. Thomas) and Snackman (J. Bowditch) raced wide throughout. Iza Comin’ lost its off-fore plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination of Top Ross failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 6:

Class 1 Handicap - 1000m
1st - Ladros; 2nd - Tinkling; 3rd - My Road

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Paul Facoory: “We put him out after his first win because he needed time to mature mentally. I think he will be better over a bit more ground, but first-up today we were happy to run him over 1000m.”

Ladoros won over 1400m before being spelled and returned with a strong effort to win first-up here. The four-year-old is very lightly raced, having only had four starts (for the two victories) to date.

Jockey Joe Bowditch: “He’s a pretty smart horse, I reckon, but he’s got to come right in the head. He thinks everything is a game. Probably needs about ... yeah, he still needs a bit of time. In probably twelve months time he’ll be a smart horse. He’s a city class horse.
“I wouldn’t be in a hurry to step him up in distance. With the shorter races he’s learning a little bit ... to get in behind them and settle behind them and stuff. So I wouldn’t be in a hurry with him. Paul’s a pretty good trainer and he’ll step him up when he needs it. Like I said, I think he is a city class horse but he’s just got to get right mentally.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Ladros): 3.30 out to .80 in to 3.50.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
My Rock (D. Griffin), which blundered on jumping away, was further tightened for room between Willyclang (A. Spinks), which shifted out, and Lady Lesia (S. Bogenhuber), which shifted in. At the start, Kiss The King (M. Hellyer) had to be checked when tightened for room between Tinkling (O. Turpin) and Hayil Augustus (B. Pengelly), which was taken in by Stalwart Honey, which jumped away awkwardly. Shortly after the start, Willyclang (A. Spinks) commenced to buck, dislodging A. Spinks. Trainer R. Coveney was advised that Willyclang must perform satisfactorily in 2 barrier trials prior to its next race start. Ladros (J. Bowditch), which was inclined to hang out throughout the event, shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
A post-race veterinary examination of Stalwart Honey revealed blood in its nose and mouth, however in the opinion of the veterinary surgeon this was caused by external trauma and as such the mare was not declared a bleeder. The connections of Stalwart Honey were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for the mare prior to its next race start.

Race 7:

Class 6 Plate - 1000
1st - Kelly; 2nd - Stature; 3rd - The Pianist

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Garry Kirkup: “Yeah, I said to the rider to try and get him out (from the draw) and go up and sit just outside the leader ... and he did exactly what I asked him to do. It was a good strong win. It was a nice race for him today. He had a lot going for him apart from the barrier. Once we got out, we didn’t have to worry. This is his seventh start for me (for three wins). Gerald Ryan had him and he told me it’s best to stick to 1000m with him. With his speed he is mainly just a 1000m horse. He can run 1100m, but there’s not many of them around.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Kelly): 3.80 in to 3.50.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Miss Mataya (R. McMahon) and Stature (J. Taylor) were slow to begin. Shortly after the start, The Pianist (J. Bowditch), which had been slow to begin, commenced to race with its head in the air and shifted in. At the same stage, She’s Got Game (K. Wharton), whilst being steadied from the heels of Red Hot Pistol (R. Mason), which shifted in, commenced to hang out and as a result The Pianist clipped the heels of She’s Got Game and blundered, losing significant ground. Ring Ring and Plenty Of Practise (C. McIver) raced wide throughout. She’s Got Game(K. Wharton), which was inclined to hang out throughout the event, shifted out approaching the 300m and as result was forced to check from the heels of Red Hot Pistol (R. Mason), which shifted in under pressure.

Race 8:

Class 1 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Zeljko; 2nd - Lucky Landing; 3rd - Magic Rocker

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Lawrie Mayfield-Smith: “My instructions were to keep off the fence. I told the jockey, even if you got the number one alley, get off the fence at some stage. When we were halfway and he was back through the field on the fence, I thought ... Oh God. But to his credit, he never gave up. It’s nice to turnaround those run of seconds and start winning. I think he’ll make a racehorse.”

This was Zeljko’s second successive win following a run of four second placings in a row.

Jockey Owen Turpin: “Lawrie (Mayfield-Smith) said to me just to jump him out and have him running fifth or sixth ... nice and relaxed. He tends to race forward, but he wanted me to try and relax him today. He did want me to come a couple off the fence, but, you understand, with gate one it was really hard.
“Lawrie had confidence in the horse. He told me he had a really good sprint. We got inconvenienced just at the 600m there, when I wanted to slide a bit more. The horse in front was coming backwards on to me. So he was left to come home on the worst part of the track. We were the only horse to win on the rail today. It was a big effort.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Zeljko): 2.50 in to 2.00 out to 2,10.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Left Hook (K. Pope) and Shaddar (J. Letherby) were slow to begin. Approaching the 1200m, Shaddar had to be steadied from the heels of Lets Deal (J. Cook), which shifted in. When the pace slackened near the 900m, Go Tally (R. McMahon) and Epicred (J. Taylor) both commenced to over-race. A short distance later, Left Hook improved up on to the heels of ZELJKO (O. Turpin) and had to be steadied. Shaddar, which was following, also had to be steadied from the heels of Left Hook. Both Zeljko and Left Hook were held up for clear running and lost ground between the 500m and 400m on the heels of the tiring Dubai Oasis (W. Clasohm). Epicred, Magic Rocker (E. Wilkinson) and Vettori’s Image(K. Wharton) raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Lucky Landing, which returned to scale with blood in its mouth as a result of a small laceration to its tongue, and in a distressed state. A swab sample was taken from Lucky Landing.

GOLD COAST REVIEW 2 (SAT, JAN 10)

This is the second part of a two-part review of the Magic Millions Raceday held at the Gold Coast on Saturday, January 10.

A Queensland victory in the $2 million Magic Millions 2yo Classic was the highlight of the day’s racing. Phelan Ready’s performance was truly outstanding, as was the way in which he was primed to perfection by co-trainers Bruce and Jason McLachlan.

Two moves won and lost the race.

When Jockey Jason Holder guided Phelan Ready into the clear on the outside shortly after entering the straight, it created a winning opportunity. Phelan Ready was still that far back most counted him out of contention, but now he had the chance to stretch out in uninterrupted fashion – and boy did he stretch out!

As Phelan Ready charged home, the favourite Paprika led into the final 100m, but her tough run was starting to take its toll and she began shift off a straight line, running away from the whip. The move was only marginal at first, but then became more pronounced. The previously unbeaten filly tried ever so gamely to grab the victory that was beckoning her, but her outward movement meant that it took just that little bit longer to get to the line than she would have done if keeping a straight course. That would prove to be a costly factor in the outcome, as Phelan Ready arrived just in time to trump her effort and claim victory.

So it was that one move into the clear and another move off a straight line dictated the final result.

In the $1 million Magic Millions 3yo Trophy, jockey Darren Gauci called on all of his experience to get a mentally out of sorts Tempest Tost home for trainer Gary White. The filly gave Gauci plenty of headaches from the barriers to the post, but her ability and Gauci’s calm influence was enough to earn the filly the big prize.

In the third major feature race, trainer Bryan Guy was very emotional when Masai Pride (Paul Hammersley) prevailed in a pressurised finish to take out the Magic Millions Cup. The grey was just setting the record straight after being narrowly beaten in the same race in 2007.

Race 6:

$1 Million Magic Millions 3YO Trophy - 1400m.
1st - Tempest Tost; 2nd - Rock Kingdom; 3rd - Jazz Heart

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Gary White: “This is just an amazing dream. I’m just so proud and so pleased for Geoff Harper and the family at Seahorse Management (the owners of Tempest Tost). You know, for them to stick by me and give me the opportunity to train a great filly like this ... you know, having the confidence in me to let me take the horse all around Australia. In discussing things, we decided to go this way (to the Gold Coast), and I jokingly said that I could tan up as much as anybody else ... so to be here is just amazing. I also need to thank Kelly Doughty and Gary Doughty for the great hospitality they gave us. I’m just overwhelmed. I’m so stoked.”

Jockey Darren Gauci: “I was more concerned about my horse than anything that was happening around me, because she was in a funny mood. She played up behind the barriers. She is never generally like that and she did get herself all wound up in a bad sweat. I thought she probably doesn’t want to do it today. The first thing you think is that something’s up.
“She didn’t begin as well as she normally does because she’d been playing up in the barriers. When I didn’t see anything go forward early, I thought I’d ride her up into a forward position and sort it out from there and, hopefully, a couple would go around me. Nothing went around us and we actually cantered. I didn’t want to be a leader. We got soft sectionals and I was surprised how slow we were going. She still didn’t really settle. She was a bit wayward. Every now and then she wanted to get on her other leg and run off the track a bit.
“When the leader kicked on the turn they put a good length on me, but I knew she’d keep coming. I wasn’t worried about the leader. I was just worried about my horses focus. Once she got her act together and got on the right leg she knuckled down and won well. I’ve ridden her four times for three wins. She is just so honest and tough. The harder you ride her the faster she tries to go. She’s just got better and better every race. I think she could go on to be a nice Group filly. It was a very good effort.”

Jockey Damien Oliver (rider of the runner-up, Rock Kingdom): “It was an excellent run. I would have liked a bit more room in the straight. I just got squeezed when I was going for my run, but he finished full of running. He’s an exciting horse.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Express Air (J. Holder) jumped away awkwardly. Chilled (B. Pengelly) jumped away awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Silvern (B. Rawiller). Shortly after the start Jazz Heart (S. Scriven) and Rock Kingdom (D. Oliver) were tightened for room between Complete Control (D. Yendall) and Bhutane Dane (M. Rodd) which after blundering shifted out. Near the 1100m Adnocon (K. Pope) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Rock Kingdom which shifted in. D. Oliver the rider of Rock Kingdom was reprimanded in this incident. Near the 1000m Chilled which was racing ungenerously got its head in the air and shifted out hampering Express Air. Near the 900m Feisty Manner (J. Bowditch) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Tempest Tost (D. Gauci) which shifted in slightly. When the pace steadied approaching the 700m Bhutane Dane improved quickly to the inside of Feisty Manner (J. Bowditch) which when being steadied shifted out slightly. Passing the 700m Feisty Manner which was taken in slightly by Black Minx (S. Seamer) shifted back in placing Bhutane Dane and Belle Soleil (G. Schofield) in restricted room for some distance. Both S. Seamer and J. Bowditch were both reprimanded. Black Minx, Cat D’ Antibes (L. Cassidy), Jazz Heart and Complete Control (D. Yendall) all raced wide for the majority of the event. Near the 500m Feisty Manner which was racing ungenerously shifted in slightly taking Bhutane Dane in onto Belle Soleil which had to be steadied. Bhutane Dane had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight. Rock Kingdom had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and in the straight until passing the 100m. Passing the 100m Black Minx had to be steadied when tightened for room between Complete Control and Rock Kingdom which shifted out to obtain clear running. Jazz Heart lost an off hind plate in running.

Race 7:

$2 Million Magic Millions 2YO Classic - 1200m.
1st - Phelan Ready; 2nd - Paprika; 3rd - Motown Lady

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Co-trainer Bruce McLachlan: “It’s great to win this race. This is the third time I’ve won it and it’s the best of the lot of them. I have great luck with the Magic Millions. It’s my sale. It’s been fantastic for me.
“He was a Maiden going into the race, but his two runs prior to this weren’t in Maidens. They were in good open races. He’s run in good company. He just got a nice, troublesome run. It was very hard to see him try to pick them up, but we decided not to chase him and ride him quiet – and it worked out alright. I actually thought it might be a bit short for him ... yet, here he is today, winning the Magic Millions.
“I’d like to thank Jason, my son and training partner. We work together. We haven’t had many fights so far, but then he’s only been in for three months. It is also my wife’s sixtieth birthday today. We’re very happy about that. She’ll be delighted.”

Co-trainer Jason McLachlan: “Mate, this is the first season of my dad and I in partnership and to win this is just unbelievable. I got to thank dad. We work together. We bounce off each other. I’ve got a few new ideas and he’s just steady as a rock. He’s been through it all before. This horse has promised so much. He can reel off sensational sectionals on the track. After Doomben the other day (when Paprika beat Phelan Ready by 6.60 lengths) I walked away disappointed wondering where do we go from here, but dad said we would press on to the race and if he qualifies, we run.
“We told Jason (Holder) to ride him quiet and to use his own discretion. He really found the line. It’s great. A lot of work has gone into this and full credit to the old man. He never stopped believing in this horse. It was actually good that nobody talked about the horse much during the week. I couldn’t believe it. I said to the staff we’d be going into this race as underdogs. We’ve got no pressure on us. He definitely did his best work when he got into open space. I don’t think he likes being cluttered up and when he got to the outside, he was really able to produce his best. It’s just so good to be here.”

Jockey Jason Holder: “He travelled really well for me. Obviously entering the straight I was well back. At that stage I thought the favourite ... I thought I couldn’t beat her. My horse was under a bit of pressure and I just had to keep encouraging him to attack the line. It wasn’t until I was able to give him a bit of room, then he stretched out nicely. I was going well then and the horse underneath me felt like he had more to give. At one stage I thought I’d run a nice third you know, but then they just kept coming back to me ... they just kept coming back to me and I thought, ‘geez, I’m a chance ... I’m a chance.’ My horse was running nice and true and Paprika just started to roll off a bit in the closing stages. Then suddenly we were at the line and I’d won.
“I’d just like to publically thank Bruce and Jason for giving me their support. This horse has been a bit dodgy the last couple of starts ... not dodgy. She’s been a bit green and I appreciate the fact that the owners and the trainers have stuck by me.”

Holder was fined $500,00 for giving a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post. The gesture had nothing on Holder’s victory scream (as he crossed the line) which must have woken up anybody dozing in the neighbouring suburbs.

Jockey Shane Scriven (rider of runner-up Paprika): “Yeah, her run was full of merit. We thought we had a good draw, but we ended up being stuck three deep. I wanted to ride her like a good thing but I didn’t want to lead to the turn. I travelled good. She zipped to the front. Battled it out. One got home over the top of her. It’s unfortunate you know. She tried her heart out and I don’t think she’ll lose any admirers.”

Congratulations too to trainer Bruce Hill who gave them all a fright with Motown Girl who came home with a flourish under an aggressive ride from Paul Hammersley. During the last fortnight, while everybody was trying to qualify their horses for the big race, the Hill stable flew pretty much under the radar, yet the quiet achiever ended up with two runners in the race. It was a big effort getting there and an even bolder one in the race itself.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Trainer B. Baldwin reported to stewards that Racing Pegasus had a pulse in its foot overnight and had been examined by his veterinary and passed fit to start. Racing Pegasus was further examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon who passed the filly fit to start. Powerful Light which was fractious in the tie up stall prior to the race was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon who reported the filly had sustained abrasions to the off hind and near hind pasterns. Powerful Light was then passed fit to start.
Shadow Assassin (D. Oliver) was tightened for room on jumping away between Paprika (S. Scriven) which shifted out and Horizons (C. Williams) which shifted in. Paprika, Carlton Forward (L. Nolen), Powerful Light (App M. Palmer) and Our Dreaming (J. Cassidy) were all wide for the majority of the event. Near the 700m Horizons improved up onto the heels of Motown Lady (P. Hammersley) and had to be steadied. Near the 300m Big Tony (D. Nikolic) shifted out and bumped the hind quarters of Double Heart (J. Taylor). Near the 300m Shadow Assassin had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Fairchild (B. Pengelly) which shifted out to improve. Shadow Assassin then had difficulty obtaining clear running for a short distance. B. Pengelly the rider of Fairchild was reprimanded and reminded of his obligations. Passing the 300m Fairchild shifted out and bumped Horizons. Passing the 250m Big Tony and Double Heart were obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of Motown Lady. Over the concluding stages Paprika shifted out under pressure taking Phelan Ready (J. Holder) wider on the track. J. Holder the rider of Phelan Ready was fined the sum of $300.00 under the provisions of AR137(c) for making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post. Moonlight Hussey lost a near-fore plate in running. A post race veterinary examination of Moonlight Hussey revealed the filly to be shin sore in the near fore leg. A post race veterinary examination of Koblenz revealed the filly to be lame in the near front leg. Trainer G. Portelli will be advised that Koblenz will require a veterinary clearance before again racing.

Race 8:

Magic Millions Cup Quality Handicap - 1400m.
1st - Masai Pride; 2nd - Black Piranha; 3rd - Voice Commander

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Bryan Guy: “I can’t talk now mate, I’ve run out of breath. Mate this is sensational. You know for the Forsyth family ... Jimmy and his wife Betty. They’ve been in this place for forty years and to win this race for them is something unbelievable. My wife is sitting at home. She owns a third of it so I’ll be sweet at home. We bred him as well mate. We bred him. For us to win a race like this on out home track ... and for (jockey) Paul Hammersley. He was in a beautiful spot. Paul rode him absolutely fantastic. He’s a bit of an old bugger to ride, but Paul did a great job. Pauls’ ... my foreman Scott is Paul’s father so it is a real, in-house, family affair.
“Potentially the horse could have been anything but we couldn’t get the bugger to jump. All he did was stand in the barriers and miss the kick five, ten lengths and then run seconds and thirds. We tried everything with him and nothing seemed to work. Today, he just put his mind on the job. He jumped, lobbed himself up there. I tell you it was an unbelievable win.
“As I’ve said before and I’ll say it again ... to win this for Jimmy and Betty Forsyth is just so good. They’ve been in the game for forty years and have always been with one stable. You don’t get that these days.”

Owner Jimmy Forsyth: “I can tell you that on this day two years ago, this horse was the most unlucky horse in Queensland when he should have won this race. He got narrowly beaten (by Warrior Trader) but he has made up for that error today.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Jockey D. McLellan the rider of Walking Or Dancing was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 900m he allowed his mount to shift in taking Encroacher (D. Yendall) in onto Gatakers Bay (T. Treichel) which when tightened had to be checked. D. McLellan's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence immediately and expire midnight 23 January 2009. In addition stewards imposed a monetary fine of $500.00.
Encroacher was hampered on jumping away between Albert The Fat (D. Nikolic) and Voice Commander (D. Oliver) both of which shifted ground. Regal Castanea (S. Galloway) over-raced in the early stages. Rounding the first turn Light Red (G. Schofield) hung out taking Black Piranha (C. Williams) wider on the track. The Big Easy (J. Taylor) and Light Red raced wide for the majority of the event. Rounding the home turn Black Piranha shifted out around the heels of Regal Castanea to improve and in doing so forced Light Red wider on the track. Near the 450m Vocalic (S. Seamer) had to be checked when tightened for room between Mr Slick (C. Brown) which shifted out to improve and Albert The Fat (D. Nikolic) which shifted in. Both C. Brown and D. Nikolic were reprimanded. Shortly after straightening Regal Castanea improved up onto the heels of The Big Easy and had to be checked. Over the concluding stages Mitanni (J. Holder) was placed in restricted room between Walking Or Dancing and Black Piranha which shifted in. C. Williams the rider of Black Piranha was advised to exercise more care.

Race 9

Magic Millions Class 6 Plate - 1200m.
1st - Zero Rock; 2nd - Morning Colours; 3rd - Manila Calling

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Brad Pengelly did it tough in the week leading up to the Magic Millions meeting in order to ride the Kelso Wood trained Zero Rock at 52.5kg, but the effort proved to be worthwhile and Pengelly’s faith in the filly proved to be spot on as Zero Rock simply toyed with her opposition to claim her fifth win from only six starts in untroubled fashion. After her previous success at Eagle Farm, Pengelly was frustrated by the fact that the filly didn’t stay the 1400m trip of the $1 million Magic Millions 3yo Trophy as he thought that she otherwise had all the attributes to tackle a race of that nature. That might have been too hard. This was too easy. The money was as good as in the bank long before the filly crossed the line.

Zero Rock was the third winner on the day to set a New Race Record. The filly recorded a time of 1-08.99 to lower the time set by The Big Easy by 0,57 seconds.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Unintentional (R. McMahon) and Prince Vilhelm (J. Cassidy) which were both fractious in the barriers were examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. When being fractious Prince Vilhelm pulled the off front plate and given the time restraints the farrier removed the other front plate.
Love Hit Me (R. Mason) was slow to begin. Near the 700m Mr Unforgettable (D. Nikolic) laid out onto the heels of Periander (J. Taylor) which had to be steadied. Near the 600m Mr Unforgettable improved up onto the heels of Kirra Lyn (App M. Palmer) and had to be steadied. Release Me (G. Schofield), Stella Command (C. Williams) and Utterly Fantastic (D. Yendall) all raced wide throughout.
P. Hammersley the rider of Morning Colours pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 300m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of Mr Unforgettable, which resulted in that horse being checked. P. Hammersley's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence immediately and expire midnight 23 January 2009. In addition stewards imposed a monetary fine of $500.00.
A post race veterinary examination of Unintentional revealed the horse to have abrasions on the forehead. A post race veterinary examination of Prince Vilhelm failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 10:

Magic Millions Country Cup - 1400m.
1st - Centover; D/Heat 2nd - Havayarn and Beautiful Timing

WINNER FEEDBACK:
The Toby Edmonds trained gelding sat well off the pace all the way to the turn. On straightening, jockey Scott Galloway switched Centover widest of all the runners, allowing him an uninterrupted run to the line. The five-year-old responded well to make up ground rapidly on the leaders. He charged into contention inside the final 200m and had to keep finding as he was forced to slug it out in a pressurised final chase to the line. The result sparked a lively celebration by owners in the grandstand whose expressions, as they descended the stairs to meet their winner, alternated between outright joy and pure disbelief, summing up the magic of horse ownership. You can’t buy that feeling.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Blow The Bugle (S. Scriven) jumped away awkwardly. Kalinga Steel (App M. Palmer) was slow to begin. Near the 1100m Manston (D. Nikolic) which was over-racing shifted in and bumped Dardan (T. Treichel). A short distance later Manston had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Havayarn which shifted in. Beautiful Timing (G. Schofield) which was following improved up onto the heels of Manston and shifted in abruptly and hampered Dance At Midnight (R. Thompson). Approaching the 1000m Prince Cashe (S. Thurlow) which was over-racing had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room by Blow The Bugle (S. Scriven) which shifted in. Near the 300m Dance At Midnight which had been disappointed for a run between Sir Teles (R. Wiggins) and Dardan had to be checked when further tightened for room by Dardan, which was taken out by Havayarn (G. Colless) which shifted out abruptly off the heels of Educated (L. Cassidy). G. Colless was severely reprimanded. Passing the 300m Blow The Bugle and Beautiful Timing came together.

GOLD COAST REVIEW 1 (SAT, JAN 10)

This is the first part of a two-part review of the Magic Millions Raceday held at the Gold Coast on Saturday, January 10.

Trainer Steele Ryan’s plan to capture a lucrative Maiden win came to fruition when Two Little Words saluted in the opening event.

Trainer Liam Birchley ran up a quick double with Pepperwood and Southport. The former is flying, This was the four-year-old’s third win in five starts this preparation and his second successive feature race success, following on his win in the Bernborough at Doomben last time out. Southport, for his part, bounced back after a lack-lustre effort in his previous start to put his career back on track.

Keen Commander showed all of the qualities that race-goers love in a racehorse. The Denise McGrath trained gelding has never been short of ability or the character to stand and fight and both of these attributes were tested to the full in the Magic Millions Sprint. Keen Commander battled it out the whole length of the straight with the hard chasing Mfuwe (who received no less than 7kg from the winner) and he quite simply refused to be beaten, fighting on to hold a narrow, but decisive margin at the line.

Trainer John O’Shea is no stranger to success on Magic Millions day and this time Espurante provided him with another victory notch on his belt.

Both Southport and Keen Commander established New Race Records for their respective races. Southport stopped the clock in a time of 1-10.44 (beating last year’s run of Sharufa by 0.04 seconds), while Keen Commander’s time of 55.90 comfortably beat Sir Monashee’s 2008 time of 56.29. Further highlighting the quality of these performances is the fact that Southport carried 2kg more than Sharufa when eclipsing the latter’s record, while Keen Commander carried a whopping 6.5kg more than the weight carried by Sir Monashee when setting the old mark.

Race 1:

Maiden Plate 3YO & Up - 1200m.
1st - Three Little Words; 2nd - Soulima; 3rd - Dictatorship

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Steele Ryan: “I have so much respect for his ability. We had EI. We had lots of little things that sort of held us up a little bit. He went shin sore probably four times. He is an exceptional galloper though. He hits the ground very, very hard. I’ve always thought he was one of the better horses in my stable and I still think that. The plan was to go to the Class 6 to get him fit before going to this lucrative Maiden. You don’t get them every day.
“We’ve always been supporters of the Magic Millions, albeit at the bottom end of the market. My dad bought this horse for $75 000 odd, and he said to me, ‘I might keep this horse myself.’ Anyway, a couple of months later he come in and said he’d named it Three Little Words. I said, ‘Dad, how did you come up with that?’ He said that when it wins at the Magic Millions he was going to say three little words, ‘You bloody beauty.”

Jockey Joe Bowditch: “He gave me a few anxious moments. Like he was a bit slow to begin. Then early in the race he wanted to do a few things wrong and we were back a bit out of our ground. But, to the horses credit, he got out and hit the line very well.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Lindner Girl (App M. Palmer) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in hampering Nothin Leica Rapid (T. Treichel). A short distance later Cheapskaterrubi and Nothin Leica Rapid were tightened for room between Professor and Lindner Girl which continued to shift in. Passing the 900m Three Little Words (J. Bowditch) improved up onto the heels of On The Mark (D. Oliver) and had to be checked. Brierly and Professor which were following were hampered as a consequence. Lucyrox (G. Colless), Catchment (C. Brown) and Zsazsa (D. Gauci) were all wide throughout. Approaching the 400m Professor improved up onto the heels of Lucyrox and had to be steadied. A short distance later Professor again had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Lucyrox and Zsazsa which shifted in. Professor then laid in for the remainder of the event. A post race veterinary examination of Brierly failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 2:

Stayers Cup Quality Handicap - 1800m.
1st - Pepperwood; 2nd - Ashraf; 3rd - Causeyacan

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley: “He has had a lot of bad luck with gates and the speed in his races etc .... but he has really hit his straps well this preparation. He’ll be given a spell now and will come back for the Winter. Maybe we’ll look at something like the Hollindale back down here (at the Gold Coast) again.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
L. Nolen the rider of Drizzle pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that passing the 1600m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Rebounded (J. Cassidy) taking that horse in tightening the running of Causeyacan (G. Colless) and as a result Causeyacan shifted in clipping the heels of Nellie Got There (C. Brown) and blundered. Prince Leo (J. Taylor) which was following was hampered as a consequence. L. Nolen's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence midnight 13 January 2009 and expire midnight 24 January 2009. In addition stewards imposed a monetary fine of $500.00. Grand Corso (D. Gauci), Secrets Untold, Iluva Queenslander and Telestah La Vistah (T. Treichel) were wide throughout. Near the 300m Drizzle (L. Nolen) which was tiring, was momentarily tightened for room by Nellie Got There which shifted out slightly and Causeyacan (G. Colless) which shifted in. Ashraf (D. Spriggs) laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.

Race 3:

2YO Plate (Set Weights) - 1200m.
1st - Southport; 2nd - Swift Sands; 3rd - Bella Sirena

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley: “Last start he didn’t let down. He was feeling shin sore afterwards. He’d jarred up a bit, but he didn’t get sore enough to be put out. We worked on him and we were hoping for rain. They predicted rain all week and we got a little bit there, but it dried out again and we thought the track might again be too hard for him. Maybe that little bit of rain was just enough.”

Jockey Shane Scriven: “We had a lovely run. I just forgot about him early on. The other day he was travelling and looked like a winner coming to the turn – but he just didn’t let down. We were all left scratching our heads after that start. I believe the vet went over him and there were a few problems. I got a similar run today and this time the horse stood up to what we expected of him. What you’ve seen today is the result of what a good team can do when working hard to get things right. He wouldn’t have been out of place in the big one today this horse. In twelve months time he is going to be a horse to be reckoned with.”

Scriven had brought Southport down the inside running rail. I asked the jockey if he thought it was a fair track for everybody, wherever they chose to make their bid for victory.

Scriven: “I do yeah. This was my first ride for the day, but I had a good look at the track going around. We probably defied what looks like being a pattern (by staying on the fence) but I did sort of use this horse as a test dummy and it worked out good. I know a little bit more now than I did when I went out there. That was the whole plan. I might have let the cat out of the bag because everybody knows there is nothing wrong with the inside now.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Ruth’s Secret (G. Colless) blundered on jumping away. Swift Sands (G. Schofield) and False Accusation (D. Oliver) came together on jumping away. Felony Flight (J. Cassidy) had to be checked on jumping away when tightened for room by Falls Creek (L. Cassidy), which after jumping away awkwardly, shifted in. Shortly after the start Floral Scent (S. Galloway), which began awkwardly, had to be steadied off the heels of Bella Sirena (E. Wilkinson). Near the 1150m Southport (S. Scriven) was tightened for room between Kingcup (G. Baker) and Devil’s Angel (D. Gauci). D. Gauci the rider of Devil’s Angel was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Passing the 900m Devil’s Angel hung out taking Richly Blended (L. Nolen) and Falls Creek momentarily wider on the track. Devil’s Angel and Felony Flight raced wide for the majority of the event. Approaching the 600m Bella Sirena (E. Wilkinson) had to be momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of Richly Blended which shifted in. Passing the 600m Southport improved to the inside of Kingcup where there was doubtful room and had to be steadied. Shortly after straightening Felony Flight shifted out and bumped the hind quarters of Devil’s Angel. Near the 300m Richly Blended had to be steadied when tightened between Bella Sirena which shifted in slightly and Mazzini (App P. Wells) which was endeavouring to shift out to obtain clear running. A post race veterinary examination of Ruth’s Secret revealed the filly to be shin sore in both fore-legs.

Race 4:

Sprint Quality Handicap - 1000m.
1st - Keen Commander; 2nd - Mfuwe; 3rd - Sir Monashee

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Denise Mcgrath: “The issue last Saturday was the mud and just lifting his feet out of the ground, that’s all. He gamely fought on but under 60kg it was just too much.” (Keen Commander was beaten by Langfibian in the Bat Out Of Hell over 900m last start). “Today, (the going) on top of the ground gave him that little bit of advantage. He’s just wonderful this horse. He really is. He’s given us such pleasure and the young man looking after him, Jonathan Smith, my foreman, has done a wonderful job with him.
“He had a pretty easy week coming in actually. He had a bit of a hit-out on Wednesday, just to open the pipes and make sure he was alright after last week. He’s my pride and joy, although hopefully I’ll have a few more coming through. I just wanted people to see this courageous horse at his best so they could know what he can do. He is such a brave fellow.”

Jockey Corey Brown: “The combination of the weight and the bad track beat him last time. He took that race very well though. Today, he never got a breather. They made him work all the way. I needed to get across to the fence. He fought on well. It was a good effort.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As G. Baker was overweight stewards permitted E. Wilkinson to be substituted as the rider of Red Meshach. Sir Monashee (J. Holder) and Monashee Knight (G. Schofield) were slow to begin. Hotshot Hayil (R. Thompson) jumped away a little awkwardly. Simplest (S. Scriven), Aladdins Lion (J. Taylor), Vive Le Roi (D. Craven) and Grand Rumba (S. Seamer) all raced wide throughout.

Race 5:

Fillies & Mares Quality Handicap - 1300m.
1st - Espurante; 2nd - Insistence; 3rd - Laletta

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer John O’Shea: “She’s had a few things not go her way this prep and it’s not been her fault, let me tell you. We’ve finally got it right. She’s run well. She’s just been racing a little keenly in herself, so we tried a few gear changes (blinkers off, winkers on) just to help her come back and also to run the 1300m. She’s always been a bit suspect beyond 1200m. The changes seem to work and Glyn (Schofield) rode her beautifully.
“It probably helped that she got held up at the top of the rise. It just probably delayed her run and helped her get the best out of the 1300m, because we knew she’d come quick. She’s a Black Type Flying Spur mare – and they are very hard to come by.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
D. Griffin the rider of Fuhrnatic pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that approaching the 1100m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Lady Showheart (L. Cassidy) taking that horse in across the heels of Jumaana (C. Brown), which in turn was taken in and tightened Key Bar Nights (J. Holder), which had to be checked and as a result shifted in hampering Illuminates (App P. Wells). D. Griffin's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence midnight 11 January 2009 and expire midnight 24 January 2009. In addition stewards imposed a monetary fine of $500.00.
Near the 350m Rare Diamond (S. Thurlow) had to be steadied when tightened between Fuhrnatic (D. Griffin) and Jumaana which shifted out to improve. Near the 250m Key Bar Nights improved up onto the heels of Jumaana and had to be steadied. Inside the last 20m Bareena (D. Oliver) was required to race in restricted room to the inside of Espurante (G. Schofield).
When questioned regarding the performance of Bareena jockey D. Oliver stated that the mare was fractious in the barriers and was a little slow to begin. He added that shortly after the start as the mare had been unable to muster early speed he elected to take a position closer to the fence however, there was an incident forward to him near the 1100m which resulted in him being positioned further back than he had anticipated. He further added that he was obligated to ride for luck and the horse ran home nicely in the straight.
A post race veterinary examination of Rock Idol revealed the mare to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer K. Wood was advised that Rock Idol must trial to the satisfaction of stewards and he is to provide the results of an ECG before the mare is permitted to race again.
