SUNSHINE COAST REVIEW (SUN, MAR 22)

A review of the meeting held at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday. March 22.
Racing was switched from the scheduled grass meeting to the Cushion Track.

Race 1:

4yo & Up Maiden Plate - 1600m
1st - Real Grand; 2nd - National Soldier; 3rd - Dane Raider

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Ian Jackson: “He’s been very consistent and very honest. He is just a lovely horse to be with. Very friendly ... very quiet. He is a good horse to ride at home. I’ve done a bit of show-jumping on him as well. It has taken a while, but he deserved to get his win.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Real Grand): 3.80 out to 4.20.
Favourite (National Soldier): 2.50 out to 2.60 in to 2.50. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Dane Raider (N. Thomas) had a tendency to over-race whilst racing wide during the early stages. Near the 300m, Kinda Modern (J. Piper) was forced to check when attempting to take a tight run to the inside of Shaqino, which shifted in. J. Piper, rider of Kinda Modern, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Dane Raider (N. Thomas) had a tendency to lay in throughout the event.

Race 2:

3yo & Up Maiden Plate - 1200m
1st - Kalinga Lady; 2nd - Renegade Dancer; 3rd - Go Rainey

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Carmel Richardson: “She keeps drawing the bad alley. She draws outside every time we nominate her. She got it again today and we said, no you’ve just got to run now. The plan was just to lead and then hope she could keep going. She did. She finished off well. She has been racing well all of the time. She’s just had no luck.”

Jockey Tony Pattillo: “Yeah, we just went forward from the outside draw. We just jumped on the bunny. She ran really good. She was sort of struggling to get the 1000m and we didn’t know which way to go with her. Once we got up to a little bit further along the road, the 1200m – well we had to come back to 1100m because they switched to the Cushion Track – but it is still that extra bit of distance where they go a little bit slower and we thought that might suit her better. She got to the lead. She got it on her own and she dictated. She was strong enough at the line. I was quite happy with the way she won. I think she can win another couple of races. Fingers crossed.”

PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Kalinga Lady): 3.30 out to 3.50 in to 2.80.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As C. McIver was ill, D. Griffin was substituted as the rider of Kalinga Echo. Trainer N. Flouskos was given permission by the stewards to race Stalwart Garza without hoof pads. The start of this race was delayed when Stalwart Twist (M. Morris) reared and became cast in the barriers. Stalwart Twist was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to race. I’m All Yours (A. Badger) was slow to begin. Imposing Belle (S. Galvin) lost ground when was tightened for room at the start. Red Rocker (N. Thomas) and Stalwart Twist (M. Morris), which jumped away awkwardly. Kalinga Echo (D. Griffin) and Coolbadah Comet (R. Hinricks) raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Stalwart Twist revealed the horse to have been galloped on on the off-fore pastern.

Race 3:

3yo Class 2 Handicap - 1400m
1st - River Perfume; 2nd - Papal Joy; 3rd - Qwerty

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Charlie Weston: “She had good city form (finishing a couple of length back to the likes of the smart Seesawing and Meet George in her last two starts). I wasn’t certain how she would handle the track, but she went good. She was second-up today and went up in distance little bit (from 1300m to 1400m). I think she’ll get a mile or better – 2000m, I think. She usually likes the outside, but she ranalright today on the inside which is another plus.”

Jockey Shree Drake: “Yeah, we stuck on the fence early. She is a horse that gets back, so sometimes it is not an advantage having gate one. But I thought ... well, I did try to dig her out a bit ... but I I’m thinking, gee I’m near the lead - there must be no pace. But then everyone went forward. I was worried again she’d go back, but that was no problem with the small field. In the end we all had to fight. I didn’t want to go to the inside. I thought it was going to be softer and I wouldn’t pick up as much momentum. She gets kept fighting. It was a great finish.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (River Perfume): 3.30 out to 3.60.
Favourite (Papal Joy): 2.90 in to 2.80 out to 3.00. Finished second.

STEWARD REPORT EXTRACT:
La Bella Luisa (D. Griffin) was tightened for room at the start by between Qwerty (C. Reith) and Sir Reason (O. Turpin), which shifted out. Jockey A. Pattillo, rider of 2nd placegetter, Papal Joy, was fined $300 for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram overweight. A post-race veterinary examination of Papal Joy revealed the presence of blood in the off nostril as a result of a laceration in that nostril.

Race 4:

Class 1 Handicap - 1000m
1st - Bonza Bronze; 2nd - Wonkavator; 3rd - Beautiful Memory

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Ron McCrae: “They rode him for speed last time and he just doesn’t hit the line, you know. So we designed it today to ride him back, so he could get home. I think he’ll go 1200m ridden quietly. He just doesn’t seem to want to breath if you hunt him up early. You get bad alleys and that is why they have had to use him up early to get across. He is definitely better ridden quietly.”

McCrae was then summoned to the Stewards Room, where apprentice Michael Hellyer, the rider of the third placed Beautiful Memory, had lodged a protest against the winner, Bonza Bronze.

Apprentice jockey Michael Hellyer (giving his grounds for objection): “At the start Christian Reith’s mount has jumped awkward. It’s crossed me at the start and put me on to Christian Reith’s heels. I therefore have had to grab hold. He’s bumped my horse off balance pretty badly. My horse usually is an on-pace runner. It sits second or third. I’ve lost all ground straight away. Being that my horse has only has a few starts, it’s knocked me off balance and I was a good ... at least three to four lengths off him after the incident. I’ve therefore had to use her up early to catch up to the field. In the straight, because I had to use her up early, she’s got nothing left.”

Jockey Christian Reith had no questions for apprentice Hellyer.

Jockey Christian Reith (making his statement): “If you look at the head-on film, definitely, my horse does begin awkward. I believe if you have a look at the horse in the pink colours in gate six (Questify), it jumps and shifts in, hits Michael Hellyer’s horse, which makes contact with mine. It hits my horses hindquarters, which puts my horse sideways. It makes it look like my horse bored out but actually, while my horse begin a bit awkward, you can see I steered it off. But when that horse outside has made contact with Michael Hellyer’s horse, it has cannoned it into my horse which screwed Michael’s horse sideways. My horse is an on-pace runner. I had to correct my horse, straighten it up. I lost ground. I was back further than I was supposed to be. Coming to the home turn, Michael Hellyer is about a half-length off me. He gets nearly level with me, then my horse kicks away and beats by a fair, decent margin.”

Apprentice Hellyer had no questions for Reith.

Pat Duff (trainer of Beautiful Memory): “At this stage, in a situation like this, I’ll leave it in your hands. We won’t hold up proceedings.”

Ron McCrae (trainer of Bonza Bronze): “I feel the same way.”

The objection was dismissed.

Bonza Bronze was pick-up ride for Christian Reith (replacing the ill Bobby El-Issa) and it allowed him to keep his momentum going after riding a back-to-back double at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Bonza Bronze): 4.40 out to 5.00 in to 4.40.
Favourite (Wonkavator): 2.70 out to 2.90. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
On return to scale a protest was lodged by M. Hellyer, rider of the 3rd placegetter, Beautiful Memory, against Bonza Bronze, alleging interference at the start. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video, stewards found as the start was effected, Beautiful Memory lost ground when tightened for room by Bonza Bronze, which shifted out, and Questify, which shifted in. As Bonza Bronze could not be held solely responsible for the incident, and taking into account the 1,75 margin between the relevant horses at the finish, stewards dismissed the protest and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge's placings.
Approaching the 500m, Wonkavator (M. Speers) improved on to the heels of Stalwart Honey (E. Wilkinson) and had to be steadied. Beautiful Memory (M. Hellyer) was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

Race 5:

Class 3 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Yuketan; 2nd - Gazillion; 3rd - Falling Star

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Trevor Miller: “The tongue-tie (on first time) definitely made a difference. Racing without it was definitely an issue last time. He choked down the other day. That’s why I backed him up. I normally wouldn’t have backed him up. I just wanted to prove that we’d solved the problem. He is quite comfortable over this distance (1200m). I think 1400m would also be no problem, you know. He travels good through a race. He’s pretty strong all the way through and he can do it at both ends.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Yuketan): 3.00 in to 2.50.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Mighty Canny (A. Merritt) shifted out at the start, making contact with Tunes Of Gold (D. Griffin). Mighty Canny then commenced to race ungenerously for a short distance. Gazillion (S. Drake) lost ground at the start when tightened for room between Bella Heart (O. Turpin), which shifted out, and Falling Star (C. Reith), which shifted in. Gazillion was momentarily held up for clear running near the 500m. Falling Star (C. Reith) was inclined to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages. Nasadispute (J. Piper) raced wide throughout.

Race 6:

Class 5 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Pertinence; 2nd - Wings Of Seraph; 3rd - Seraphino

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Troy Hall: “She’s got a great record here (six wins). She just loves Coloundra. She loves it here. She is a good mare who just keeps paying her way. Damian (Browne) handled her beautifully. He is a great jockey – a beautifully balanced rider. The run came at the right time. He had to push through to beat my old horse (Seraphino). It was terrific ride. She’s going to Brisbane over 1500m in a No-Metropolitan-Win race next time. Hopefully Brownie can make the weight on her. He’s only had the two rides on her for two wins. The 1500m trip will probably be as far as she goes. I’ve tried her at 1600m. She just can’t get it. Brownie knows how to nurse her. He’ll get her the 1500m.”

When Hall mentioned that his runner had to push through ‘to beat my old horse’, the runner he was referring to was Seraphino, who was one of nine horses that Hall previously had in training for high profile owner Nick Moraitis. All of those horses were recently removed from Hall’s care.

Trainer Troy Hall (explaining the change): “Basically, Nick (Moraitis) had a stable manager who looks after all of his horses up here in Queensland. The manager and I had a falling out and so the horses have moved on. That’s basically what happened. It was a shame, you know. We had a fantastic time training Nick’s horses. We won ten starts from thirty-five runners. We did have a very good strike-rate but, anyhow, hopefully one day Nick might come back to us. I certainly never fell out with Nick. The guy who was managing the horses in Queensland, we had a falling out – and that’s how it is, you know. We started with one horse from Nick and ended up with nine horses in the end. We built up a nice team and I think that is where the manager started to want to put too much of his input into it. I’m my own man and so that’s how it finished up. I’ve still got a handy sized stable and other horses that were due to come back in to work are doing so now. The downside is that Nicks horses were all fit and ready to run, whereas those coming in now are going to take some time to get ready, so, in that sense, it has slowed the stable down – but we’ll get there all right.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Pertinence): 2.70 out to 2.80 in to 2.30.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Star Touch (G. Baker) and Seraphino (K. Pope) jumped away awkwardly. Star Touch, which raced with its head in the air and over-raced for the majority of the event, shifted out near the 1100m and hampered Seraphino. Shortly after, Geebeetee (N. Thomas) was forced to steady and shifted out to avoid the heels of Star Touch. Geebeetee raced wide from the 700m. Approaching the 300m, Semi Wells (C. Reith) was hampered when tightened for room between Seraphino and Pertinence (D. Browne), which shifted out to obtain clear running. Seraphino raced wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Geeteebee, N. Thomas stated that, in his opinion, the gelding raced disappointingly, adding that Geeteebee travelled well until asked for an effort near the 700m, however failed to respond to his riding from that point. Trainer Mr B. McLachlan agreed that the performance was disappointing and advised that Geeteebee would be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of Geeteebee failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. A post-race veterinary examination of Star Touch failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 7:

Open Handicap -1000m
1st - Braebrook; 2nd - Clouds of Cognac; 3rd - Fire Hazard

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tony Sears: “He has to be ridden like that (cold – from behind) otherwise he just doesn’t get to the line, you know. That’s the only way you can ride him. You would expect him to pick up the way he did today when Tony (Pattillo) asked him, because he is a pretty handy horse. He may have one more run here in a fortnight. Otherwise, I’ll give him a short break and I’m going to take him up for the Rocky Lightning.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Braebrook): 1.30 out to 1.50.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Clouds Of Cognac (M. Hellyer) began awkwardly, losing considerable ground. Near the 200m, the tiring Lackadosh (A. Badger) was tightened for room between Clouds Of Cognac and Fire Hazard (S. Apthorpe), which shifted in under pressure. S. Apthorpe, rider of Fire Hazard, was reprimanded and reminded of his obligations to be fully clear when shifting ground. Braebrook lost its off-fore plate in running. Court Adjourned lost its near-fore plate in running.

Race 8:

Class 1 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Godly; 2nd - Ana Me Cori; 3rd - Elton's Son

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Troy Pascoe: “I’ve only been training since around December. It’s my second win. I won a Maiden him at Texas (on December 13). Winning here is a little bit different from that. I am very happy with the way things are going and with the way he put it all together today.”

The result gave jockey Tony Pattillo a treble on the day.

Godly was the fourth successive favourite to win on the day.
The favourite won all four legs of the Quadrella.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Stewards accepted the explanation of trainer D. Peoples for the late notification of N. Thomas as the rider of Samsoon. As Michael Palmer was injured, J. Taylor was substituted as the rider of Vistula Belle. Emgee Em Grand (M. Hellyer) raced wide during the early stages. Near the 800m, Samsoon (N. Thomas) was forced to steady from the heels of Elton’s Son (L. Appo) when the pace steadied. Leaving the 600m, Bohica Baby (J. Piper) shifted out, making contact with Ana Me Cori (C. Reith). Near the 500m, Isti Polly (E. Wilkinson) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Jedi Starfighter (A. Badger), which shifted in. Ana Me Cori was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight. Jedi Starfighter (A. Badger) raced wide throughout.

EAGLE FARM REVIEW (SAT, MAR 21)

A review of the meeting held at Eagle Farm on Saturday, March 21.

Track-rating: Dead 4 (Upgraded to a Good 3 after Race 2). Rail: True.

Race 1:

Class 6 Plate - 2200m
1st - Drumshanbo; 2nd - Encosta Tszyu; 3rd - Dawns Queen

Trainer Michael Nolan: “He is a promising stayer. First go at the trip and he has run it right out again, you know. It was a good sound effort. He really put paid to them. He is only lightly raced. I know he pulls, but I don’t want to take the blinkers off because I don’t want to change things while he’s getting these results.”(Drumshanbo has won four out of twelve starts with five minor placings). “ We’ll probably give him another one of these races. We were going to give him a bit of racing before the Winter and then spell him, but he handles wet and dry ... whether he is up to something during the Winter ... who knows? He is much improved. We had him in a Class 3 at the Gold Coast today over 1800m. It was a real easy race. The owners said, oh no, we want to see if he’ll run 2200m. I said, right. We got the answer today.”

Apprentice jockey Michael Palmer: “He jumped up in distance. I think the further ...you know the 2000m, 2200m races are a lot better for him. The other day (when winning his previous start over 1818m) he just never really settled and sort of wanted to reef and tear. Well, today he just settled and raced a lot better. I sort of had a sneak look back halfway up the straight just to make sure I was going alright. I didn’t want to put him under more pressure than necessary. Today he was a lot more focussed than the other day. The last time he wanted to look around a bit. He’ll go through his grades.”

For the record, Michael Palmer’s brother Matthew did complete all of his engagements during the afternoon. Matthew Palmer was the focus of some concern following an incident at Ipswich on Friday, when his mount Star Cure bolted through the barriers prior to the second race and left the rider receiving medical attention for a lengthy period of time, after which he was transferred to hospital for further examination.

Apprentice jockey Matthew Palmer (talking later on Saturday about the drama at Ipswich on Friday): “The horse went right down on the ground and got out under the gate. Because the gate didn’t open he just put be against the metal and jerked my head back. Because I’d broken my neck before, that’s why they were so careful with me. To be honest, I don’t remember that much. I thought they just put me straight in the ambulance. I didn’t realise it took so long. So I must have out for a while. I’m very sore now. I’m on a lot of pain-killers. We’ll see how it is tomorrow. Right now it’s pretty uncomfortable.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Drumshanbo): 7.00 out to 9.00.
Favourite (Encosta Tszyu): 2.00 out to 2.50. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Peaceful Honour (App L. Rolls) jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Moon Chaser (App M. Hellyer) and Dawns Queen (App C. McIver) made contact on jumping away. Drumshanbo (App M. Palmer) raced wide in the early stages. Near the 1500m Drumshanbo commenced to over-race and improved up onto the heels of Father Dex (C. Reith) and had to be steadied. Fort ‘N’ Won (App O. Turpin) raced wide until a point near the 1200m.
When questioned regarding the performance of Fort ‘N’ Won App O. Turpin stated that the horse jumped well and whilst he was obliged to race three wide until well into the back straight he was of the opinion that Fort ‘N’ Won was very disappointing. Trainer's representative Mr M. Dunn advised stewards that Fort ‘N’ Won would be sent for an immediate spell. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 2:

2yo Handicap - 1300m
1st - Fantastic Blue; 2nd - Choistar; 3rd - Spinelli

Trainer Paul Nolan: “I bought him at the Magic Millions sale. Gerry (Harvey) said to me, don’t race him as a two-year-old mate ... he won’t make a two-year-old. I said Gerry you stick to selling fridges and I’ll train horses. He cost $55000, which is a bloody lot for me, I can tell you. I’ve got a few plans for him, but I’m not divulging anything now. It’s a secret. Keep watching the papers. No, seriously, he could have gone into the Magic Millions race next Saturday, but they don’t count that money. I want to win the Sires Produce (on May 30) with him, that’s what I want to do. So I’ve got to go where the money counts. We’ve just been stepping him up gradually in distance. He’ll get a mile.”

Jockey Larry Cassidy: “He is a really nice horse. He has got a lovely action on him and when he flattens out, like he really gets low to the ground and really lengthens stride. He was pretty lazy the last bit when he got to the front. He will run a mile – no problem. I would think he would get further, but that’s harder to say at this stage. But I’m certain he’ll get a mile, no problem at all.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Fantastic Blue): 2.50 out to 3.00.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The Goddess was declared a late scratching at 12.41 p.m. by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice after the horse became cast in the barriers. Stable foreman for trainer B. Baldwin was advised that The Goddess must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to its next race start.
Neeson (R. Goltz) jumped out at the start taking Finx (App M. Palmer) out onto Show Me Why (App L. Rolls), which in turn shifted out hampering Fantastic Blue (L. Cassidy). Empezar (K. Pope) jumped out at the start making contact with A Touch Of Frost (App B. Evans), which shifted out hampering Warrego (M. Radecker). Show Me Why faltered near the 1100m. Empezar which raced ungenerously throughout the event shifted out leaving the 600m taking Choistar (A. Pattillo) wider on the track. Stewards intend to question trainer T. Miller in regards to the racing manners of Empezar. Succeed And Exceed (App A. Taylor) hung in when placed under pressure in the straight. Tonzaticka (J. Byrne) which raced wide throughout, had a tendency to lay out. A post race veterinary examination of Empezar failed to reveal any abnormality. A post race veterinary examination of Show Me Why failed to reveal any abnormality

Race 3:

No Metro Win Handicap - 1400m
1st - Margy Magic; 2nd - Kentish Rose; 3rd - Hear Ye

WINNER FEEDBACK
Trainer Alicia Willick: “He’s so honest. He’s had a couple of weeks out in the paddock. He went to the owner’s property and had three or four weeks out there. It was a last minute decision, we thought this race was pretty weak. We really wanted 1200 – we were looking at a race next week - but we thought we’d throw him in. He’s been a really naughty boy, he’s been jumping out of his skin. It was a good win, a very good win, he’ll only improve on that.

Apprentice jockey Luke Rolls: “The horse let down really well didn’t he? He was good racing fresh. We struck a bit of trouble about the 1000m mark, probably just a tad before ... sort of got up on heels and had to check out of it a little bit. Once he found his feet again, he got travelling nicely underneath me. As soon as he saw daylight he really hit the line.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Margy Magic): 4.40 out to 4.60 in to 4.00. Equal favourite.
Equal favourite (Jacaranda Charm): 3.80 in to 3.50 out to 4.00. Finished sixth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Jacaranda Charm (K. Forrester) blundered on jumping away. Demolir (App O. Turpin) was slow to begin. Margy Magic (App L. Rolls) which had commenced to over-race, improved up onto the heels of Jacaranda Charm near the 1000m and when being restrained shifted out taking Snackman (App B. Evans) wider on the track. Pelltro (J. Brown) raced wide in the early and middle stages. Snackman and Demolir (App O. Turpin) raced wide throughout. Kentish Rose lost its off-fore plate in running.
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey K. Forrester regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Jacaranda Charm. K. Forrester stated that due to the lack of pace in the early stages he was forced to position Jacaranda Charm in a more forward position than he would have liked which is in contrast to the mare's normal racing pattern. K. Forrester explained that in his opinion this did not suit Jacaranda Charm. K. Forrester further added that the mare then travelled comfortably however, was under pressure rounding the home turn and proved very disappointing in the way it had finished the race off. A post race veterinary examination of Jacaranda Charm failed to reveal any abnormality.
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey B. El-Issa regarding the performance of Power Express. B. El-Issa stated that the horse travelled fairly in the early and middle stages however, when asked for an effort upon entering the home straight Power Express changed stride on several occasions and commenced to tire shortly after. Trainer B. Purcell stated that in his opinion Power Express may not have appreciated the firmer surface today and added that the gelding is more affective on rain effected tracks. A post race veterinary examination of Power Express failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 4:

Open Handicap - 1600m
1st - Honour Happy List; 2nd - Go Cart; 3rd - Tisani Boy

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Danny Craven: “I was back last travelling nice and comfortable. I was very happy where I was. You have got to ride him quiet anyway. When she let down I thought it was going to win by a couple of lengths running away from them, but as soon as it got to the front it said, okay I’ve done my job now, that’ll do me. Just stayed in front. That’s all it did. It was a good run last start. She was a little bit unlucky. A couple of things went wrong last start. She only got beat half-a-length. The trainer (Olivia Cairns) is a very good trainer. She’s very good with her horses. You watch all of her horses are presented one hundred percent before they race and they always race that way too.’’

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Happy Honour List): 13.00 Steady.
Favourite (Tisani Boy): 2.10 in to 1.85. Finished third.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Nevada Gambler (App M. Hellyer) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from App C. McIver the rider of Rags To Riches regarding the tactics he employed today on that horse. App McIver stated that he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position and stated that he was able to take up the lead shortly after the start. App McIver further explained that Rags To Riches raced strongly in the lead and when Sam’s Express (App O. Turpin) improved to the outside of him near the 1200m Rags To Riches commenced to race very fiercely. Trainer L. Birchley confirmed the instructions and after viewing stewards patrol footage concurred with App McIver's explanation. Stewards noted their explanations.
Stewards also sought an explanation from App O. Turpin in regards to the tactics he employed on Sam’s Express, in particular the reasons for him improving his position forward and to the outside of Rags To Riches near the 1200m which resulted in an exceptionally quick tempo in the middle stages. App Turpin stated that he had been instructed to have the horse in a handy position and shortly after the start was able to take up a position one off the fence behind Rags To Riches. App Turpin further explained that his horse raced strongly approaching the 1200m and rather than restrain the horse he felt it was in his mount's best interests to allow it to stride forward to the outside of Rags To Riches near the 1000m. Trainer M. Nolan confirmed these instructions however, voiced disappointment in regards to App Turpin's decision not to attempt to restrain Sam’s Express and take up a trailing position behind Rags To Riches given the speed of the race. Stewards advised App Turpin that in their opinion his ride lacked judgement, specifically his failure to attempt to take a position behind Rags To Riches which had become available leaving the 1200m. App Turpin was advised that he would be required to attend apprentice training and undertake sessions of tutelage with Queensland Racing Limited's riding instructors.
A. Pattillo the rider of Pay me was reprimanded for using his whip to excess. When assessing penalty stewards took into account A. Pattillo's exemplary record.

Race 5:

NMW Handicap - 1000m
1st - Backstabber; 2nd - Hail Free; 3rd - Fiamore

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Brett Dodson: “(Trainer and part-owner) Tim Martin had a few problems with him. He went sore. After his run at Wyong, he sort of half-retired him. He had a sesamoid problem. In fact he was in plaster for a while down at Tim’s. At first they said they weren’t going to bring him back. He seemed to recover pretty well. A few of the guys in the horse, who live in Tamworth, I used to knock around with them, the same as Tim, and they said, why not let him go to Coffs Harbour and give him a bit of a go over there. I said I would take him along on the basis that if there was any sort of sign he was going to go, well then I wouldn’t press on.
“We tried a few tricks with him. So far it’s worked. He gets plenty of swimming. I mean he’s had the saddle on once ... he had the saddle on him on Tuesday ... that’s the first time he’s had a saddle on since his last run (on February 28). He doesn’t get worked much, but I suppose that is what you’ve got to do to get steel these horses up. He is a lovely horse. We knew he could gallop. It was just a matter of steeling him up. Ah, yeah he had to fight in the finish. He showed a bit of ticker for sure. Any horse that has had that sort of injury and has recovered from it so well, has already shown you that he has got a bit of ticker in him ... and, like I say, we knew he could gallop. It took both the ability and the heart to win today. We’ll give him a break now. I just wanted to turn the horse out all put together. The minute he performed like he did, it was a bonus. But that horse going into the paddock now is going in good. You’ll be confident you can bring him back strong. I’ve only had him for three runs (which have brought a hat trick of wins). Three out of three, so he’s certainly been good to me.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Backstabber): 3.50 out to 3.70.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Fiamore (R. Wiggins) and Snowladd (App L. Rolls) came together at the start. Carry On Doctor (E. Wilkinson) shifted out at the start and bumped Patties Mate (D. Craven). Bradfield (C. Reith) was slow to begin. Shortly after the start True Flyer (K. Yoshida) was tightened between Decibella (App A. Taylor) and Admiral Gherkin (L. Cassidy) which shifted in. Near the 600m Tejada (App M. Palmer) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Admiral Gherkin which shifted in. Patties Mate hung in when placed under pressure in the home straight. Decibella raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 6:

3yo Handicap - 1200m
1st - Plain Magic; 2nd - Leapfrog; 3rd - Surrounded By Sin

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelly Schweida: “She’s always shown a lot. He’s done a good job today, because I backed right off her after she won – work-wise. We had to pick her up again. She is only a light little filly. She had to put it in here. She showed fight in the finish, although I think she ran out of gas about 50m out, but she had that extra bit of ability which allowed her to just carry on. She is a tough little filly. It’s hard to win going from a Maiden to a Three-year-old Handicap.”

Jockey Christian Reith: “She is a nice filly in the making. She had a couple of hiccups last preparation and Kelly (Schweida) got her over that. She’s always had ability. She tracked up good. Everything went according to plan in the race and I’m very happy with her effort.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Plain Magic): 10.00 in to 9.00.
Favourite (Meet George): 3.80 in to 3.60. Finished sixth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
A Little Knowledge (App C. McIver) and Mountain Brew (D. Craven) both began awkwardly. Alioop (L. Cassidy) and Leapfrog (App L. Rolls) came together on jumping. Surrounded By Sin (A. Pattillo) raced ungenerously in the early stages. Leaving the 1000m Meet George (App O. Turpin) was obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of Mountain Brew, which was receiving pressure from Alioop. A short distance later Meet George then had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Mountain Brew, which again was taken in. Heza Flashman (K. Yoshida) which was following had to be steadied as a consequence. Near the 700m Mountain Brew improved up onto the heels of Plain Magic (C. Reith) and shifted out making contact with Alioop. Mountain Brew then became unbalanced and faltered. Seesawing (J. Byrne), Tears’N’Çheers (App B. Evans) and Casholet (App M. Palmer) all raced wide for the majority of the event. Near the 350m Rovert (D. Browne) shifted out hampering Heza Flashman. Approaching the 200m Navigation (B. El-Issa) was crowded for room to the inside of Tears’N’Cheers, which shifted in under pressure. A short distance later Navigation had to be steadied off the heels of Seesawing, which shifted out slightly. Near the 100m Rovert shifted out to improve and in doing so made contact with the tiring Seesawing. A post race veterinary examination of Seesawing failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 7:

Open Handicap - 1300m
1st - Watchyerback; 2nd - Vietnam; 3rd - Nellie Got There

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Murphy: “He is a nice old horse. He should really have won at Doomben. Then he went to the Gold Coast and we dropped him back to the 1200m. Over the 1200m at the Gold Coast – it is a tight track, he is a big horse, it was wet and he was slipping and sliding around the place. It rained all day and the track was slippery and he just couldn’t get his footing. They lose their confidence in those conditions. Today is the first time I got a nice track for him. The sting out of the track suited him. He got a good hold and he extended out well. We ran him further back, and he got home. He is an eight-year-old so we have to look after him. He’s had problems – bad knees, bad feet, bad joints – all just wear and tear. He is a big animal too, which doesn’t help. You can’t do too much with him. I just take him to the beach and swim him. That’s all. I’ve had him for two runs now. I got him from (trainer) Phillip Pengelly. He came down here with the horse and then left the horse with me when he went back.” (Pengelly, the father of jockey Brad Pengelly, is based in Gladstone). “I’m not certain where he will go next. I think Phillip wants to prepare him for the Newmarket in Rocky. Maybe he will reconsider that. In two weeks time there is a mile race here, a one metro win in the last twelve months. You think he could win that wouldn’t you? He might get a bit of weight but he is a strong horse.”

Jockey Christian Reith (who completed a race to race double on the day): “He didn’t have much luck in the running, but the horse is better racing outside of horses. He was three deep with cover. I got on the back of one and was able to track it through, which helped a lot and, you know. He went to the line full of running.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Watchyerback): 14.00m out to 15.00.
Favourite (Bareena): 3.80 out to 4.20. Finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Vocalic (App J. Brown) began awkwardly. Near the 900m Vocalic improved up onto the heels of Bareena (J. Byrne) and when being restrained got its head up and raced very ungenerously. Very Canny (A. Pattillo), Bitabiff (D. Craven) and Hard To Catch (App O. Turpin) all raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Public Nuisance failed to reveal any abnormality.

Race 8:

4YO & Up Class 6 Plate - 1200m
1st - Frosty; 2nd - Abbacina; 3rd - More On The Toe

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Brian Wakefield: “He really didn’t have a good run from the barrier last time and he only got in .... Luke rode him very well ... but he just didn’t have any luck that day. He only just got in around 100m or so and then he had to start making his run again. He was three wide here again today all the way. He did it well. We’re looking at another one of these races next week at Doomben.”

Apprentice jockey Luke Rolls (who completed a double on the day): “Last time the draw got us and I thought it was going to get us again today but the horse was a touch fitter. He began so well. I was told to ride him a bit quieter, but I got caught wide, so I thought there was no point in hunting forward. He had no weight on his back so I thought I would just keep him balanced. He relaxed very nicely underneath me. He is a nice, big horse and he covers ground well. He is going to win more races.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Frosty): 5.00 out to 5.50.
Favourite Hodges Street): 5.50 in to 4.00 out to 4.20. Finished tenth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As App B. Evans the rider of Seething Duck was to be overweight he was fined the sum of $300.00.
Trainer J. McLachlan was advised that More On The Toe which proved difficult to load would require a further barrier certificate before racing again.
Bushland (K. Forrester) and Hodges Street (App A. Taylor) made heavy contact on jumping away. Seething Duck (App B. Evans) jumped away awkwardly. Time And Dandy (D. Craven) had to be steadied shortly after the start when tightened for room between Ulladulla (B. El-Issa), which shifted in and Abbacina (S. Galloway) which shifted outwards. Approaching the 1000m Seething Duck had to be steadied when Hodges Street shifted in when not clear. App A. Taylor the rider of Hodges Street was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care. Leaving the 150m Rocklet (App J. Brown) had to be checked when attempting a narrow run to the inside of Hodges Street, which shifted in and away from Michelle Cafea (App M. Hellyer) when tiring. Approaching the 100m Seething Duck had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Ulladulla which shifted in. B. El-Issa was reprimanded. Frosty (App L. Rolls) and Agnes Dream (App Michael Palmer) raced wide for the majority.

IPSWICH REVIEW (FRI, MAR 20)

A review of the meeting held at Ipswich on Friday, March 20.

Race 1:

3yo & Up Maiden Plate - 800m
1st - Mannabon; 2nd - Cubby House; 3rd - Lightning Blue

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Steele Ryan: “She over-raced a little bit the other day over 1100m (in her second career start). So I thought I’d bring her back to 800m ... just let her settle a bit on the speed. Just to give her a chance to run, you know, just give her a chance to get home. He (Corey Gilby) brought her out wider so she could run her own race and she was good enough.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Mannabon): 1.60 out to 2.30.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Polish Queen (L. Cassidy), which was slow to begin, was further hampered by Cubby House (J. Piper), which jumped inwards at the start. Nilot (S. Richardson) was slow to begin. Grace The Wind (T. Pannell) raced ungenerously in the early stages and had a tendency to lay out. Flicka Light (I. French) shifted in under hard riding, brushing the running rail near the 200m. Can She Laugh (S. Bogenhuber) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 2:

2yo QTIS 2yo Handicap - 800m
1st - Before The Storm; 2nd - Maraetai; 3rd - Dancingwithangels

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Steven Thomas: “She has shown me something from the start. From day one when I broke her in myself. You only had to show her things once. She just improved every-time on it. Even when she was starting to get ridden and that, she just seemed like underneath, she wanted to be a racehorse. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. Yeah, I just had a bit of a gut feeling about her and luckily enough I was right. I think there are good things to come for her. Character-wise she is a star. She is just a darling. She is your best mate.”

Jockey Terry Treichel: “Yeah, she ran a good race last start. She was just unlucky that a good horse (Sniplaz – who has won two out of three starts) ran her down (by a short-head). They ran home 32.5 that day. With the delay today and being behind the gates, being two-year-olds, it does take its toll. It’s done very well. She’s had three goes before this for three seconds, so it was time he broke through. But, you know, I think she’s got a lot of improvement in her and she should be better next preparation.”

Before The Storm was certainly due for her first success here. She had finished second in all three of her previous starts, going down in her last two outings by a neck and a short-head.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Before The Storm): 3.30 out to 3.50 in to 2.40.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As C. Spry was to be overweight, R. Goltz was substituted as the rider of Smart Of Course. C. Spry was fined the sum of $100. The start of this race was delayed considerably after Star Cure broke through the barriers and galloped a considerable distance. Star Cure was declared a late scratching at 1.04 pm. In this incident, Matthew Palmer, rider of Star Cure, was injured and transported to hospital for observation. As a result of this incident, Smart Of Course became fractious in the barriers and momentarily cast. Acting on veterinary advice, Smart of Course was declared a late scratching at 1.05 pm. Trainer Mr B. Guy's representative was advised that Star Cure must barrier trial satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next race start.
First Face (M. Speers) and Coloured Veil (Z. Landry) were both slow to begin. Maraetai (S. Scriven) began awkwardly and lost ground. Near the 500m, Coloured Veil (Z. Landry) improved onto the heels of Before The Storm (T. Treichel) and had to be steadied. Coloured Veil then continued to race ungenerously for a short distance thereafter. Razor Fortune (B. Evans) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 3:

CG&E Class 2 Handicap - 1025m
1st - What Is This; 2nd - Kick Off; 3rd - First Night Fever

WINNER FEEDBACK:
The Roslyn Dodd trained What Is This tracked into the race at the right time, in spite of some traffic problems early in the running, and let down with meaning to secure his third win in fourteen starts. The gelding was guided to victory by the deft touch of jockey Brad Stewart, who is currently riding with a level of confidence which seemingly is passed on to his mount, who then responds by given the rider the best he, or she, has to offer.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (What Is This): 6.00 out to 9.00.
Favourite (Sword Of Damocles): 2.00 out to 2.60. Finished seventh.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Voodoo Brown Magic (S. Scriven) and Patton (R. Wiggins) were both slow to begin. Kick Off (M. Hellyer) began awkwardly. Red Wine Bwana (A. Pattillo) had to be steadied shortly after the start when tightened for room between Sword Of Damocles (R. Goltz) and What Is This (B. Stewart), which shifted in. Riviera Moss (J. Brown) raced wide for the majority of the event. Leaving the 900m, What Is This (B. Stewart) shifted in, making contact with Sword Of Damocles (R. Goltz), which then commenced to race fiercely. A short distance later, First Might Fever (L. Cassidy), which was racing to the outside of What Is This (B. Stewart), commenced to hang in and was then taken in further by Riviera Moss (J. Brown), which in turn was taken in by Kick Off (M. Hellyer), which shifted in. In this incident, What Is This was obliged to relinquish its position. Whilst stewards noted that the racing manners of Sword Of Damocles, First Night Fever and What Is This had some bearing on this incident, M. Hellyer, rider of Kick Off, was severely reprimanded and advised that he must exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

Race 4:

3yo & Up F&M Maiden Handicap - 1200m
1st - Violet's Wish; 2nd - Stellar Rocket; 3rd - Shrewd Hostess

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Rex Lipp: “I’ve got no idea why he was tipped out after his last prep. It’s been a change of trainer. They spelled it and they ran me out of the blue, around about Magic Millions time, and asked me if I would take the horse. It came to me with no problems. In today’s race (first-up), I thought we might have got back a bit further than we did, but if you look at the field, it was a pretty ordinary old field. He hit the line well. This (1200m) is nowhere near his distance. He is an 1800m horse.”

Voilet’s Wish won first-up for her new stable. She had been out of action for eight months.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Violet’s Wish): 3.40 out to 4.00.
Favourite (Stellar Rocket): 1.60 out to 1.80. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
A pre-race veterinary examination of Demon Lil, which worked strongly in its preliminary, cleared the filly to start. Violet’s Wish (C. Spry) was slow to begin. Sembella (D. Griffin) and Iamtheone (K. Banks) brushed on jumping away when both horses shifted ground. Paris Label and Demon Lil (S. Apthorpe) made contact shortly after the start when both horses shifted ground. Near the 800m, Paris Label (W. Clasohm) improved on to the heels of Iamtheone (K. Banks) and had to be steadied. Paris Label (W. Clasohm) and Iamtheone raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 5:

3yo & Up CG&E Maiden Handicap - 1200m
1st - Don'tstop Believin; 2nd - Ruling Party; 3rd - Itsa Punt

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Paul Nolan (Jnr): “His form was better than it looked. He ran into Express Air in a Maiden in Toowoomba. She won by seven that day and he finished ten lengths back. Bloody hell, Express Air started favourite in the Magic Millions Trophy. The start to Stop Lying (two runs back), he sat four wide the trip and only got beaten by two lengths. That was a good run. Then we went to Dalby where things went against him, so we were half-confident here. All he needed was a good alley, a good track and a good rider. Bobby (El-Issa) is just so good. I’m having a freakish run with him at the moment. I plan to enjoy it while it lasts. I put the horse out after that run to Express Air. The only reason I gave him time off was I was hoping to let him grow ... but he didn’t grow one inch. Later that might count against him and at least he’s won his Maiden now.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Don’tstop Believing): 6.00 out to 7.00 in to 6.00.
Favourite (Sarsfield): 2.60 out to 3.20. Finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Trainer M. Nolan, through his stable representative, Mr P. Nolan, was fined $50 for failing to provide the Document of Description upon request for Chillme. Ruling Party (R. Goltz) was tightened for room shortly after the start between Don’tstop Believin (B. El-Issa) and General Remark (J. Murphy), both of which shifted ground. Chicken Dinner (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin. Itsa Punt (J. Brown), Proselyte (S. Scriven) and Red Or Black (L. Cassidy) raced wide for the majority of the event. Ruling Party (R. Goltz) lost its off-fore plate in running.

Race 6:

F&M Class 2 Handicap - 1025m
1st - Fivegrand; 2nd - Monashee Diva; 3rd - Shezasmith

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Stephen Lowe: “I haven’t used Bobby (El-Issa) before. The jockey I usually use went to Ballina. So, Bobby became available and he is in red-hot form. He gave it a terrific ride. I’ve only had her for one run before this. She has been a real quiet achiever since I’ve had here. She’s improved each time with each run and has shown she can be competitive. I thought 1200m would be her best distance and we were sort of getting her ready for 1200m, but she got the result today (over 1025m) and we’ll take it.”

The result gave jockey Bobby El-Issa a double on the day.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Fivegrand): 16.00 out to 17.00.
Favourite (Monashee Diva): 2.10 out to 2.20. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Lotza Action (S. Scriven) stood flatfooted at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer T. Sears was advised that he would be required to produce a further barrier certificate for Lotza Action prior to its next race start. Aurora Magic (L. Cassidy) began awkwardly. Feathery (T. Treichel) was slow to begin. Tamilda (M. Hellyer) shifted out at the start, making contact with Lady In Sequence (K. Banks). At the 700m, Lady In sequence improved onto the heels of Tamilda and had to be steadied. Near the 600m, Shezasmith (A. Taylor) commenced to over-race for a short distance and got its head up.
When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of Fivegrand, trainer S. Lowe stated that the filly struck interference in running at its previous start at Lismore on 1 March and as such was not disappointed with that performance. He added that this was the filly's second start for him, adding that Fivegrand had worked well leading into today's race and was not surprised by the winning performance of the filly today. He added that he expected continued improvement with the filly. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 7:

Class 1 Handicap - 1710m
1st - Crimson Fire; 2nd - Stefenick; 3rd - Ballyvaddy

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Jim Hanna: “We thought she could win last start (when the mare finished fourth), but the track was downgraded to heavy. She just wasn’t quite ready, but we thought she’d go very well today. It’s her fourth start this prep and she has been stepping up in distance each time. She just loves the mile. Ron (Goltz) knows her very well. I just left the race plan up to him. He knows what to do.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Crimson Fire): 4.40 out to 5.00.
Favourite (Monashee Gold): 2.20 out to 2.30. Finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Ballyvaddy (T. Treichel), Crimson Fire (R. Goltz) and Marquis De Roy (R. Mason) were slow to begin.
Near the 1200m, Ballyvaddy shifted out to improve its position and in doing so forced Marquis De Roy to a three-wide position, at which point R. Mason, rider of Marquis De Roy, elected to go forward and obtain a position closer to the rail near the 700m. Both Crimson Fire and Stefenick (W. Clasohm) were held up for a short distance round the home turn. Mada (K. Banks) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 8:

Class 1 Handicap - 1350m
1st - Breakaway Boy; 2nd - Beautiful Moon; 3rd - Trictaat

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Terry Treichel (who completed a double on the day): “It went well. We sorted of intended to be back in the field, but he jumped so well and the inside horse missed the kick. If I was going to take him back then we were going to give away a lot of ground early, so I elected to go forward. The only unlucky part is he got trapped three wide all the way, with no cover. He travelled nice and strong. He fought on the top of the straight ... kicked on ... you know, he dashed, and it was just the last fifty that was a real dog-paddle for him. I think he sorted of started to have enough. He just wanted to lay in the last little bit. It was a hard effort considering the run he had.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Breakaway Boy): 13.00 out to 17.00.
Favourite (Trictaat): 5.00 in to 4.00. Finished third.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As D. Tanti was injured, T. Treichel was substituted as the rider of Breakaway Boy. The packing under the saddle of Beautiful Moon shifted back when proceeding to the barriers, causing the start to be delayed due to Beautiful Moon having to be resaddled. Mr Mayfair (B. Stewart), Upgrading (C. Reith), Epicred (D. Griffin) and Your Mate Jimmy (B. El-Issa) were all slow to begin. Fennec Fox (A. Pattillo) and Beautiful Moon both over-raced in the middle stages of the race. Both Brave Clang (S. Bogenhuber), Your Mate Jimmy and Breakaway Boy (T. Treichel) all raced wide for the majority of the event.
