A review of the meeting held at Ipswich on Tuesday, March 31.
Race 1:
3yo QTIS Handicap - 800m.
1st - Aspiran; 2nd - Her Pic; 3rd - Triple Ay
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Victor Vagg: “I’ve trained her from the start. She has shown us talent from the word go. I owned the mother (Deena Nediym). I gave it to Neil (Vagg – co-owner of the winner) and he bred this foal. She’s a pretty easy horse to train. I brought her down from Rocky for those two runs in the city before we spelled her. She bumped into Zero Rock and Power of George in those runs – and they are not bad horses. She just wasn’t right either, but they are two good horses. This was her first start back from a spell and she was keen and she handled the track and the weight (60kg) very well. We’ll take her home now (to Rockhampton). We think she is better off at home. Then we’ll be back for a Fillies and Mares race at Eagle Farm in a couple of weeks. I think it is on the Monday.”
PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Aspiran): 1.30 out to 1.40.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Circumnavigate (M. Speers) and Her Pic (R. Goltz) were slow to begin. Flicka Light (A. Merritt) and Triple Ay (S. Scriven) made contact on jumping away. Near the 450m Over The Page (J. Murphy) had to be steadied and made contact with the running rail when racing to the inside of Aspiran (A. Pattillo) which shifted in.
Race 2:
3yo & Up Colts, Geldings & Entires Maiden Handicap - 1100m.
1st - Orientelle; 2nd - Casting; 3rd - The Snicster
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Steven O’dea: “After his first start – I gelded him after that. So there was sort of six weeks between runs. Then, it was a good run at Coloundra the other day. The horse that beat him come out and didn’t do too badly in town on Saturday. So I expected him to win today. He ended up being a little slow out. They were in the barriers for a while. He struck a little trouble early and he ended up probably a little bit further back than we would have liked. Brad (Pengelly) rides a good race and he helped him through it. This was only his third start and he has obviously still got a bit to learn. I think, with a little break, he will probably come back a better horse.”
PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Orientelle): 1.50 out to 1.80.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Ourmikeymac which broke through the barriers and galloped for a considerable distance was declared a late scratching at 1.47 p.m. by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer E. Ropiha was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate prior to Ourmikeymac racing again. Orientelle (B. Pengelly) was slow to begin. Spirit Express (B. El-Issa) was slow to begin resulting in the horse losing valuable ground. Dowden (L. Cassidy) and Dive Bomber (K. Banks) came together on jumping away and as a result Dive Bomber then shifted out making contact with Reali Ro (C. Small). Near the 800m Spirit Express improved up onto the heels of The Snicster (J. Bowditch) and had to be steadied. Spirit Express continued to over-race for some distance and approaching the 500m improved up onto the heels of Casting (D. Griffin) and blundered. As a result of this incident Spirit Express shifted out making contact with Orientelle, forcing that horse wider. Approaching the 100m Spirit Express was disappointed for a run to the inside of Dowden and as a result had to shift out and alter course. Collective (H. Hamada) raced wide for the majority of the event. A post race veterinary examination of Dowden failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3:
3yo & Up Fillies & Mares Maiden Handicap - 1100m.
1st - Ashlee's Jewel; 2nd - Sweet Magic; 3rd - Russe Princesa
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin: “It was only her first start in a race. I just think she might make a good horse later on. I’m just a bit guarded about making predictions because, as I said to somebody earlier, she won an early trial a long time ago ... about sixteen months ago. She won it well, but that only goes to show you all the ups and downs you have with race-horses, you know. She looked a good type then, but it’s taken another sixteen months before we could get her to the track for her first start. She’s had jump- outs. We have a lot of jump-outs at Eagle Farm which I think is a great asset to horses, you know.”
Apprentice jockey Amy Taylor: “It’s a bit touchy in the mouth. It come back and hit me in the head at the start. I felt my chin go back into my brain. That’s why we were back a bit early. It’s just really green. It’s done that in a trial. It went back and it was really heavy the day I trialled it and we went around the outside fence and won easy. So we knew we had something. It’s just got the best turn of foot for a little horse. Today they were all really bunched on the fence, so I went around. I hit it and she went straight past them ... and the horse just kept the momentum going.”
PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Ashlee’s Jewel): 3.50 steady.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Ashlee’s Jewel (App A. Taylor) began awkwardly. Zulu Queen (W. Clasohm) was tightened on jumping away between Bradbury’s World (M. Palmer) and Acting Up (App L. Rolls), which shifted in.
Near the 800m Bow Ketty (K. Banks) had to be steadied off the heels of Sweet Magic (S. Scriven) which shifted in. Approaching the 700m Acting Up improved up onto the heels of Because I Am (App R. Hinricks), threw its head in the air and over-raced. Approaching the 300m Cogicate Baby (D. Barron) fell when racing at the heels of Moreska (J. Murphy) and as a result In Her Shoes (B. Pengelly) also fell. Acting Up and Durian (L. Cassidy) had to be checked in this incident. An inquiry will be held into this incident at a later date as both B. Pengelly and D. Barron were transported to hospital for further medical attention. Bian Spoilt (K. Yoshida) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 4:
Fillies & Mares Class 1 Handicap - 1350m.
1st - Sharjah; 2nd - Hayil's Love; 3rd - Beautiful Moon
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin: “Mate, she has always shown a bit of ability, but she has also been a bit wayward. She’s been a bit hard to handle. Amy (Taylor) has a real affinity with her. She is the only person to win on her. Amy’s going great. She is a very good rider. I just can’t understand why she can’t get more chances ... I’ve said that to her to. She deserves more opportunities. She’s ridden three winners for me in her last three rides in the last two days. As far as the horse goes, it was a good win today actually. Hopefully, she’ll run further later on.”
Apprentice Amy Taylor (who completed a double on the day from her only two rides on the card): “She’s like really one-paced. She’s going to be a really good stayer. I just hunted her out. I wanted to lead, but another one went forward and was putting on a good pace so I just settled in off that. Because they were going along at a good lick I didn’t have to restrain her, which was very important because she is one of those horses if you pull her head, she’ll stop. So we just bowled along and quickened up at the 600m and she just kept going. I was starting to look around getting close to the line and I thought, that’s good, they’re still not coming.”
PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Sharjah): 5.50 out to 8.00.
Favourite (Trictaat). 3.50 in to 2.80 out to 3.20. Finished eighth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Miss Hadaway (App M. Milford) and Way Too Hot (App M. Speers) were slow to begin. Aurora Magic (J. Taylor) and Beautiful Moon (B. Stewart) bumped on jumping away. Leaving the 800m Duvivier (App Michael Palmer) over-raced on the heels of Mixell (Matthew Palmer). Near the 750m Electric Lass (D. Griffin) improved up onto the heels Beautiful Moon as that horse was crossing and shifted out taking Trictaat (L. Cassidy) wider on the track. Trictaat was then obliged to race wide for the majority of the event. Leaving the 200m Way Too Hot had to be steadied off the heels of Beautiful Moon, which shifted out to improve. Hayil’s Love (App S. Bogenhuber) raced wide for the majority of the event. A post race veterinary examination of Trictaat failed to reveal any abnormality. A post race veterinary examination of Duvivier revealed the filly had been galloped on the near fore leg. Following the running of this event A. Pattillo was stood down for the remainder of the day.
Race 5:
Colts, Geldings & Entires Class 1 Handicap - 1350m.
1st - Secret Request; 2nd - Voodoo Bay Magic; 3rd - Brave Attempt
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Nathan Evans (who brought Secret Request with a late rattle to snare Voodoo Bay Magic in the last stride, after the latter had looked to be home and hosed): “I didn’t think I was going to catch him, but the leader was stopping which probably made my win look a little bit better. I would have liked to be a bit closer in the first half of the race, but the horse just wouldn’t go early. I was back worse than midfield. Coming to the top of the straight I was happy with the way he was progressing through the field. Then I saw that one way up front and I didn’t know if I was going to get it.”
PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Secret Request): 13.00 out to 15.00.
Favourite (Jersey Joe): 1.80 out to 2.00. Finished fourth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Fennec Fox (D. Griffin) began awkwardly. Secret Request (N. Evans) was slow into stride. Leaving the 800m Brave Attempt (J. Taylor), which was over-racing, improved up onto the heels of Jersey Joe (L. Cassidy) and shifted out taking The Hugginator (N. Thomas) wider on the track. The Hugginator and Early Up (G. Baker) raced wide for the majority of the event. A post race veterinary examination of No Consensus found the gelding to have blood in one nostril. Trainer P. Rossington was advised that the horse must gallop a 1000m under the supervision of stewards before again racing.
Race 6:
Colts, Geldings & Entires Class 2 Handicap - 1200m.
1st - Mean Machine; 2nd - Regal Reason; 3rd - Unsupervised
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Larry Cassidy: “Now at least I’ve broken my duck at Ipswich this time around. I’ve won all the big ones at Ipswich and the Sunshine Coast but, until today, I hadn’t won at either track since I moved up here permanently in January. All my wins have been in town. I’ve got to chase the everyday ones now.
“They went slow early and I proceeded to race forward outside the leader on the slow speed. When the girl (Julie Murphy – the rider on Regal Reason) quickened up, sort of from the three, as we got to about the 300m I thought she had the edge on me, but my one dug deep and found plenty. He was just too well trained!”
PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Mean Machine): 3.00 out to 3.20.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Miller (G. Baker) was slow to begin. Unsupervised (J. Byrne) began awkwardly and shifted out. Shortly after the start The Noble House (J. Taylor) shifted out abruptly causing Rib Tickler (M. Palmer) to be checked. The Noble House then raced ungenerously for some distance resulting in the horse taking no competitive part in the race. Trainer B. Guy was advised The Noble House must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before again racing. Unsupervised and Voodoo Brown Magic (App J. Jones) both over-raced in the early stages. Unsupervised raced wide over the final 700m of the event.
Race 7:
Fillies & Mares Class 2 Handicap - 1200m.
1st - Nikki Beach; 2nd - Lotza Action; 3rd - Arctic Echo
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin (who completed a full house on the day – winning all three races he contested): “She ran fifth the other day ... and the one that won earlier, Sharjah, ran sixth in the same race – so there was a bit of a form-line there in that race. She’s pretty consistent up to 1200m, 1300m. Like always, we will hope that she keeps on improving and we’ll do our best to pick the easy races for her.”
Jockey Danny Craven: “It worked out well. We jumped from a bad alley, but she has had practise at that the last four or five goes that I’ve ridden here. It went to plan. Barry’s other horse (stable companion Arctic Echo) was drawn inside us. We knew it would go forward. So I said to him before the race I want to try and take a sit behind it. In the end, the horse put in when she had to and it all worked out too easy.”
Nikki Beach’s win not only gave Barry Baldwin a treble on the day, it also extended the trainers’ winning sequence to four straight wins as it came on the back of the success of Dancingwithangels, which was Baldwin’s only runner at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Nikki Beach): 10.00 in to 7.00.
Favourite (Arctic Echo): 2.70 out to 3.00.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Miz Winfrey (J. Taylor), which was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly. Specks Of Magic (J. Byrne) was slow to begin. Arctic Echo (S. Scriven) blundered on jumping away. Lotza Action (K. Banks) was tightened for room on jumping away between Miss Windy Weepu (S. Drake) and Nikki Beach (D. Craven), which shifted out. Lotza Action raced wide over the final 700m of the event. Near the 150m Spanish Kiss (D. Griffin) was disappointed for a run when racing between Kell’s Way (App Y.Y. Ki) and Miss Windy Weepu, which shifted in.
STEWARDS RACE DAY SUMMARY EXTRACT:

SUNSHINE COAST REVIEW (SUN, MAR 29)
A review of the meeting held at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, March 29.
Race 1:
3yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1400m
1st - Catwalk Strut; 2nd - Costigan; 3rd - Carry On Dancer
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Nicole Bruce (who was clearly overjoyed with the result): “That is how he has to race, yeah. He has got to race back and come home. Mitchell (Speers) did exactly what the trainer (Rhett Faithfull) asked him to do. It was a brilliant ride. He is not an easy horse to win on. He’s got a couple of little issues so Mitchell did a really good job.”
Apprentice jockey Mitchell Speers: Yeah, I was told not to have him near horses, because he is a bit field-shy. I was told just to get it to the outside and it should sprint home and that is exactly what happened. He showed a good turn of foot.”
Catwalk Strut was Speers’ third victory in as many days. He had won on Jackpot at Ipswich on Friday before taking out the featured Magic Millions 2yo Plate at the Gold Coast on Saturday on Sniplaz for his boss Liam Birchley. Speers commented on the Sniplaz success.
Speers: “We knew he liked the wet. We didn’t know if he would get the 1200m before the race, but he got that. He didn’t have much luck (when held wide) in his run in Rockhampton, but otherwise he’s done everything asked of him.” (Sniplaz has won three out of six starts).
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Catwalk Strut): 4.00 out to 4.80.
Favourite (Costigan): 2.00 out to 2.80. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Will Impress (M. Radecker) began awkwardly. Apprentice O. Turpin pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a), in that near the 50m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Will Impress, which had to be checked. In considering this charge, stewards conceded there was a minor shift from Archway’s Bliss (K. Pope), which was racing to the inside, however believed that this occurred after Will Impress had to be checked. O. Turpin was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 29 March and to expire at midnight, 9 April 2009. Dontworryboutme (B. Thomson) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 2:
2yo QTIS Maiden Plate - 1200m
1st - Dancingwithangels; 2nd - Rainy Knight; 3rd - Lunar Rose
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Apprentice jockey Amy Taylor: “I was up there from the start. Brent (Evans on Rainy Knight) came up outside me and I just gave my one a rest and sat off him. I stayed on the fence and she seemed to be handling the track pretty good. She just kicked when I gave her a push and I hit her the last few hundred metres and she just kept going. She hasn’t got bad form. At this stage she’s probably a good provincial horse. Only when she is a three-year-old and matures and grows - because she is only tiny – then she’ll be a bit better.
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Dancingwithangels): 4.00 out to 4.20 in to 3.80.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Smart Of Course (O. Turpin) reared as the gates were released and lost ground. Trainer R. Milne was advised that a warning was being placed on Smart Of Course regarding its barrier manners. Lunar Rose (R. Hinricks) jumped outwards at the start, making contact with On The Wave (D. Green).
D. Green, rider of On The Wave, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1150m he allowed his mount to shift in under heavy riding when not clear of Lunar Rose (R. Hinricks) and Magic Minx (J. Byrne), causing both runners to be severely checked and lose their rightful running. When being corrected following this incident, On The Wave shifted out abruptly, hampering Top Messiah (K. Pope). D. Green was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 29 March and to expire at midnight, 9 April 2009.
Rainy Knight lost its off-fore plate in running.
Race 3:
Class 3 Handicap - 1600m
1st - Starelie; 2nd - Bloodhound; 3rd - Bald Eagle
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Apprentice jockey Luke Rolls: “She began well. I never really spent a penny on her early. She just lobbed out about third or fourth. I never spent any energy at all. Coming to the half-mile, I sort of peeled out there or four wide ... and then I let her go. She finished it off good. I thought the outside ... the second horse ... I thought it had me at one stage, but she just kept fighting on.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Starelie): 3.30 out to 4.80.
Equal favourite (Seraphino): 3.00 out to 3.60. Finished sixth.
Equal favourite (Ryjatah): 3.00 out to 3.60. Finished last.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Seraphino (M. Hughes) reared as the start was effected and refused to jump. Trainer C. Morphy was advised that Seraphino must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next race start. Bloodhound (K. Pope) began awkwardly. Akoya (S. Galloway) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with Bald Eagle (M. Palmer). Passing the 1400m, when the pace steadied, Bloodhound commenced to over-race for some distance and threw its head in the air. Leaving the 700m, Seraphino had to be steadied when crowded for room between Bloodhound (K. Pope), which shifted out, and Starelie (L. Rolls), which shifted in.
Race 4:
3yo & Up Maiden Plate - 1000m,
1st - On The Leather; 2nd - Eleven Oysters; 3rd - Silent Le Touch
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Stewart Mackinnon: “He had a knee operation. He had chips removed. He’s been off a long time – eight months. He had three months in the paddock and six weeks on the Aqua-walker up here at Yandina Lodge. That helped him a lot to get him back, you know. He’s been back in training for about four months. We just gave a slow prep to bring him up so there was not much galloping on his knees. He’s got ability, like he showed today. He took command a long way out. The Rubiton’s like the wet track and that helps his knees as well. If he stays sound, he’s a horse he can get to town, but we have to handle him with care.”
On The Leather has finished in the first three placings in all four career starts.
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (On The Leather): 1.80 out to 1.95 in to 1.85.
The winner was the favourite.
STERWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
El Morocco reared as the start was effected and lost considerable ground. Trainer R. Stephenson was advised that he must provide a barrier certificate for El Morocco prior to its next race start. Iron Hawk (K. Forrester) began awkwardly and made contact with the outside barrier partition. Eleven Oysters (B. Pengelly) was slow to begin. Hudsons Hornet (S. Apthorpe) raced wide for the majority of the event. In The Clink lost its off-fore plate in running.
Race 5:
Class 2 Handicap - 850m
1st - Lots Of Allure; 2nd - Hurricaneprince; 3rd - Sadliers Crossing
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Mick Mair: “Ah, she fights on alright. She got going again. The going wasn’t too bad on the fence there. The short sprint (850m) is fine for her ... or the 1000m. She likes the 1000m on the Cushion Track.”
Apprentice jockey Jana Piper: “I won on it last time on the Cushion Track. It won very well over 1000m. I was lucky to get the ride on her again, because she did get the minimum and I couldn’t claim on her. They did come at me in the closing stages, but I knew I just had to hold on to her head and not hit her ... and she’ll just keep going. If you hit her, she doesn’t go any faster. You’ve rather just got to keep helping her, stay balanced and keep hold of her mouth. Then she’ll do her best.”
This was the lightly-raced Lots Of Allure’s second successive victory. Her race record now reads three wins and three runner-up finishes from only eight starts.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Sadliers Crossing (M. Speers) and Hazza Heart (A. Erhart) were tightened for room at the start between Doppelt (S. Kennedy) and Lots Of Allure (J. Piper), which began awkwardly and shifted in. Hazza Heart lost ground as a result of this incident. Riviera Moss (N. Evans) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
Race 6:
Class 5 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Abirra; 2nd - Degenda; 3rd - Frisco's In Charge
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Wilson: “The reason he was out for three-and-a-half months is we struck a few problems – stone bruises, mate. We nearly had him up and then he got a stone bruise. That cost us a couple of weeks. Then he got another one, in his back foot this time. We really would have preferred 1000m first-up, but we had to take what was on offer. I think it was a very good effort first-up over 1200m. We didn’t really want him to lead. She (Jana Piper) got real smart there. She peeled out around the home turn and got out onto the better part of the track. We’ve got him in a Class 6 on Easter Monday.”
Apprentice jockey Jana Piper: “I never ridden this horse before. The trainer told me it would begin really well. He said it was first-up over 1200m so I should try and look after him early. I had one on the outside of me - just half-lengthing me – in front of me, annoying the you-know-what-out of me. In the end, I think he proved he was just that much better than the other horses. I don’t think they needed to claim on him, but I’m pleased they did.”
Abirra is certainly not short of ability. Included in his list of credits is a win over Burdekin Blues and a short-neck runner-up finish to Charming Rogue. His strike-rate of six wins from seventeen starts is also a big positive factor.
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Abirra): 2.30 out to 2.40 in to 1.90.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Irishkiwi (E. Wilkinson) jumped outwards at the start, making contact with Sir Woody (S. Drake). Chaufuhr (C. Reith) began awkwardly and shifted out. Frisco’s In Charge (O. Turpin) began awkwardly and lost ground. Near the 800m, Irishkiwi had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Sir Woody (S. Drake), which shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination of Sir Woody, which finished tailed off, revealed the horse to be lame in the near-fore leg. Trainer D. Macoun was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance prior to its next trial or race.
Race 7:
Class 1 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Coen; 2nd - Frenardi; 3rd - Gazillion
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Ian Livingstone: “We bought him out of the tried sales for $3000. We’ve got an apprentice (Keely James). She’s got to do bush rides, so we bought him for her to ride. That’s the third run we’ve had with him. That race at Esk (two runs back), I just put him in to see what he would do in a race, you know. Just to try and find out more about him. He got that far back and then just flew home. Then we came here and ran second last time (at 21-1). The horse who beat us then (Lots Of Allure) won again earlier today, which franked our form, yet we’ve again been allowed to start at the same long odds today. We are not a punting stable so that doesn’t matter, but it is still interesting that the odds didn’t allow for his improvement. It’s been improving all the time and it’s the best mannered horse you could ever have around the place. It just goes to sleep. Any kid can ride it in work. It’s just a pleasure to train.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Coen): 17.00 out to 21.00.
Favourite (Gazillion): 4.00 out to 4.80 in to 4.60. Finished third.
.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Frenardi lost its off-fore plate when proceeding to the barriers and had to be reshod. Bradash (J. Piper) jumped outwards at the start, making heavy contact with Trail Of Secrets (E. Wilkinson), which in turn shifted out, making contact with the hind quarters of Red Tsar (A. Badger). Gazillion (S. Drake) commenced to over-race in the middle stages and near the 700m had to be steadied off the heels of Frenardi (A. Pattillo) and shifted out, inconveniencing Trail Of Secrets, which was following. Coen (M. Hughes) shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages. Spanglish (R. Hinricks), Silver’s Legacy (C. McIver), Hootson (K. Yoshida) and Red Tsar (A. Badger) all raced wide for the majority of the event. A post-race veterinary examination of Spanglish failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 8:
Class 1 Handicap - 1600m
1st - La Bellashee; 2nd - Vistula Belle; 3rd - Banana Split
WINNER FEEDBACK:
John Maddon: “It’s a mare that got run on from behind twelve months ago and we’ve put in a lot of work into her. We knew she would always take a mile. She showed us ... she went over 2000m last week. We backed her up fresh. She likes the sting out of the ground. It was a perfect day for her. She’s been coming on steadily. She’s only lightly framed. You’ve got to take her slowly, but she has got a lot of work under her. She is fit.”
Apprentice jockey Jana Piper (who completed a treble on the day): “We didn’t want her that close, but when I saw the top weight (the favourite, Banana Split) going out, I wasn’t letting it out of my sight. I really thought I needed to keep it within a couple of lengths of me and then we had the finish to see them all off. I was pretty happy. I really do want to thank the trainer (Dennis Heinemann). He is absolutely great the way he has stuck by me. I couldn’t ride La Bellashee last start, but I know Dennis will always give me the ride back when he can. I’m really grateful for his support.”
With one win on Saturday night and a treble on Sunday Jana Piper has improved her tally to twenty-three winners in the Sunshine Coast Jockeys Premiership. Piper, who led the championship early before weight issues began to plague her progress, is now in full cry after Premiership leader, fellow apprentice Owen Turpin. Turpin is still well clear, but not yet quite safely home, with thirty-five winners. Turpin fell foul of the stewards at today’s meeting and was suspended for seven meetings, meaning that Piper has a ‘free card’ at the double-header fixture at the Sunshine Coast next weekend to attempt to make further inroads into Turpin’s lead. It could be a race worth following.
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (La Bellashee): 17.00 Steady.
Favourite (Banana Split): 3.10 out to 3.30. Finished third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Rock Away The Days stood flatfooted at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer Mr D. Powell was advised that he must provide a barrier certificate for Rock Away The Days prior to its next race start. So Long (C. McIver) was slow to begin. La Bellashee (J. Piper) and Jedi Starfighter (A. Badger) began awkwardly. Approaching the 1200m, Jedi Starfighter commenced to over-race and improved on to the heels of Don’t Back Down (B. Thompson) and blundered. Jedi Starfighter then continued to over-race for some distance. Rock Away The Days raced wide for the majority of the race.

Race 3. Seraphino - Reared at start/refused to jump - Official trial - LR36(b)
Race 4. El Morocco - Reared at start, lost considerable ground - B/certificate - LR36(b)

DOOMBEN REVIEW (SAT, MAR 28)
A review of the meeting held at Doomben on Saturday, March 28.
Race 1:
Fillies & Mares NMW Handicap - 1200m
1st - Pimpala Gift; 2nd - Decibella; 3rd - Best Of Ceedee
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Gordon Yorke: “The jockey (Luke Cumberland) is apprenticed to Kim Waugh down at Wyong. He’s been riding a bit for me. He is a really nice boy ... a thinking boy. He’s at the stage where he wants to turn around and he’s going to be a bit special, I think. So I asked him the other week, I said listen, where are you riding, and he said Newcastle. I said, there’s no future in that champion, jump on a plane. So he did. He’s a good boy, you know. I like good kids. I love letting someone have an opportunity in racing. All I said to him was, have your horse travelling. You know, he is thinking well enough to ride the horse ... don’t try and ride the race how I say, ride the horse how it feels ... and he just did it. He positioned it lovely and rode it how it felt, you know. I’m a little bit too patient with her, but this filly, if she holds together, maybe 12 months, 18 months from now, she’s got enough class to show me she could be a Black Type mare.”
Apprentice Luke Cumberland (who landed his second city winner – his first city success came at Rosehill on Harry Kay): “We jumped out well ... not as good as we sort of hoped. There was a bit more speed than we anticipated. We travelled nice and got on the fence and got a lovely run into it. The horse on the outside sort of steadied up on the turn. I was lucky enough to push a bit wider and got a good run in from there. She sort of kicked for about a hundred metres and that was good enough on the day. Yeah, I’d love to come back more often. I hope I get the opportunity.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Pimpala Gift): 6.00 out to 7.50.
Favourite (Decibella): 3.80 out to 4.60 in to 4.00. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Jellicles (J. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly. M. Radecker the rider of Licence To Steal was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that she permitted her mount to shift in near the 1100m when insufficiently clear of Flying Squaw (B. El-Issa) causing that runner to be taken in onto Midnight Surprise (App O. Turpin), which in turn tightened the running of Gun Belle (L. Cassidy), which lost its rightful running. M. Radecker's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of seven (7) meetings to commence midnight 29 March 2009 and to expire midnight 9 April 2009. N. Thomas the rider of Where’smine was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in near the 800m, resulting in Flying Squaw having to be steadied to avoid that horse's heels. Jellicles over-raced in the middle stages. Decibella (App A. Taylor) was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight. Where’smine (N. Thomas) and Flying Squaw raced wide throughout.
Stewards questioned App A. Taylor in regards to the tactics employed on Decibella, in particular the reasons for her allowing Pimpala Gift (App L. Cumberland) to cross and obtain a position forward of her near the 800m. App Taylor stated that she had been instructed to ride the horse off the speed as per its usual racing pattern as connections harboured concerns that if Decibella was to take up a handy position it would be unable to finish the race off. Stewards recorded the explanation.
Midnight Surprise (App O. Turpin) lost an off-fore plate in running.
Race 2:
2yo QTIS Handicap - 1110m
1st - Bevagna; 2nd - Fab Fevola; 3rd - Bella Sirena
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Mick Mair: “She won on her debut (at the Sunshine Coast) which is always good. Then I brought her to town. She went down to a fair horse (Manhattan Angel). That run was good last time. She probably should have nearly won. The horse fell over getting off the float today. Lost a bit of bark, but it was nothing. I’ve cut myself worse shaving.”
Apprentice Michael Hughes (who rode his second city winner – the first was Mr Aristos): “We had a bad gate. I was instructed to go forward. I got caught out on a limb. We settled just behind the leaders. In the run home I concentrated on keeping her in a straight line, because she is still green, and she knuckled down and won really well.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Bevagna): 8.00 in to 7.00 out to 7.50.
Favourite (Fab Fevola): 3.50 out to 3.60 in to 2.70. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Bevagna which suffered an abrasion en route to the course, was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Rocky Habit (K. Pope) jumped in at the start and made heavy contact with Promo Girl (J. Byrne), resulting in that horse shifting in and tightening the running of Mr Tracey (B. El-Issa) and Airworthy (J. Taylor). Fab Fevola (L. Cassidy) jumped out at the start and made contact with Bouncin' Back (App B. Evans). Bouncing’ Back commenced to race greenly approaching the first turn and after passing the 800m shifted out making contact with the hind quarters of Promo Girl resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. Bevagna (App M. Hughes) raced wide in the early stages. Near the 600m Bouncin’ Back which had continued to race greenly, shifted out tightening the running of Mr Tracey. Bouncin’ Back then shifted out despite the efforts of its rider and had to be steadied off the heels of Promo Girl. Trainer J. Dorrington was advised that Bouncin’ Back must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to racing again. Rocky Habit and Promo Girl raced wide throughout. G. Heinrich the trainer of Airworthy, which finished a distant last, advised stewards that she would give the colt a break from racing to be gelded. Trainer M. Mair reported that the Rocky Habit was shin sore in both fore-legs following the event. M. Mair will be advised that Rocky Habit will require a veterinary certificate of fitness before its next race start. Airworthy lost a near-hind plate in running.
Race 3:
Open Handicap - 2020m
1st - Honour Happy List; 2nd - Take The Plea; 3rd - Pay Me
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Olivia Cairns: “What a good run. I’m so pleased with the result over the longer distance. It wasn’t that I didn’t think she’d get the extra, it was just that she hadn’t really been trained for it. She is a little bit of a mess to train, but we understand each other. I’m the boss at the end of the day, but we do have our days where she can be a bit of a mess. Eventually, I would like to end up down here. (Cairns is currently based in Townsville). It’s just you’ve got the have the right opportunity at the right time. I’ve got to be happy with the way things are going. That’s my fourth win since we moved horses down in November ... and we’ve had a few close seconds.
“This mare ... I really think this mare should have won her last four now. (This was Honour Happy List’s second win in-a-row). The last four runs she should have won. The day she got beat a nose Owen (Turpin) only claimed half-a-kilo on her (instead of his 3kg allowance). In the next start Danny (Craven) rode her and he was in exactly the same position he was last week, but he opted to go out instead of staying on the fence. It cost her the race. That was the day Go Cart won. She’s been pretty unlucky. That’s why I couldn’t work out why she was $26 last week (when she won over 1600m). We are a bit stuck in the middle now. Whether or not she handles the next step is another thing. I’m just not certain she’s up to the grade of the Carnival here, you know. So we’ll probably take her home for a rest and then head to something like the Rocky Newmarket first-up ... that’s 1300m. Then I guess the Townsville Cup will be on the programme, no doubt.”
Apprentice jockey Luke Rolls: “I was very confident because the horse was travelling really well. It was a great run really, nothing got in the way.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Honour Happy List): 4.20 in to 3.80 out to 4.00.
Favourite (Sam’s Express): 4.00 out to 4.20 in to 3.80.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Sam’s Express (App B. Evans) jumped away awkwardly. Pay Me (A. Pattillo) and Rabbit (App L. Cumberland) made contact shortly after the start. Leaving the 300m Intheway had to be steadied off the heels of Honour Happy List, which shifted out to improve.
B. Calkin the rider of Intheway pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in near the winning post on the first occasion when insufficiently clear of Honour Happy List (App L. Rolls), forcing that runner in onto Winmara (J. Taylor), which lost its rightful running. B. Calkin's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of seven (7) meetings to commence immediately and expire midnight 8 April 2009.
Race 4:
Class 6 Handicap - 1615m
1st - Humma; 2nd - Eddie Rapido; 3rd - Plenty Of Practise
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Heathcote: “A lovely ride. He’s a good horse. I was amazed with one of the publications that said, we’re not sure if Humma will handle the dry track - he’s been suited on the wet tracks. Well three weeks ago ... or three runs ago ... I had to call Chris Waller (Humma’s previous trainer) to see if he handles the wet track and they said, no. So I thought he was nearly as good a thing that I had going around for a while. He dropped weight on Montoux, he had the one draw, he had Cassidy on board, he’s on a dry track. In fact I think he is probably better off ridden a touch colder and coming with the rush. But, when you got barrier one at the mile start you’ve got to use it. He hasn’t run a bad race in the half-dozen races he’s had since he’s come up here. I just wish they’d send more of those Sydney horses up here.”
It would seem that the horse pulled up better than the trainer. Rob Heathcote looked to be decidedly delicate in his stride as he moved towards the winners’ enclosure.
Rob Heathcote: “I’ve got stress fractures of both my tibias. I went to the doctor and he said lose some weight and get fit. So I went out ... and I’ve given up alcohol and eat salads, go running ... and now I’ve got two F&%$£ broken legs and I haven’t slept for three weeks, so I’m going back on the piss. Seriously, I’ve been in a lot of pain for two weeks – but that (the win) does help ease the pain. That will buy a few pain-killers."
Jockey Larry Cassidy: “Yeah, I got the right run. The main thing is ... obviously he missed the start a little bit, so mainly I just wanted to get him out and on his way a bit without revving him up to much. We were able to do that. Then it was just a matter of extracting him on the turn. I wanted to get out of there, but I didn’t want to do a left hand turn because I thought then I might not be riding for the next few weeks. When the run came we took it. They pressured him all of the way, but the one thing was he did find and just kept on finding.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Humma): 4.60 out to 5.50 in to 4.80.
Favourite (Hike): 3.80 out to 4.00 in to 3.80. Finished fourth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Onion was declared a late scratching at 1.58 p.m. by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice when that horse sustained an injury to the off-fore foot. Dawn’s Pride (D. Browne) and Hike (S. Scriven) were slow to begin. Eddie Rapido (C. Reith) over-raced in the early and middle stages. A post race veterinary examination of Bann Ruby (App J. Jones), which raced wide throughout, failed to reveal any abnormality. A post race veterinary examination of Cassardi (S. Galloway) revealed the horse to be sore in the off-fore leg. Trainer B. Smith was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before Cassardi is permitted to race again.
Following the running of this event S. Scriven the rider of Hike made an official complaint against the starter of this race Mr I. Smith. After taking evidence from BTC Starter J. Roberts, Assistant Starter I. Smith and jockey S. Scriven, stewards found that shortly before the start was effected S. Scriven voiced concerns to the Starter regarding Hike leaning on the rear gates. Assistant Starter Mr I. Smith explained that whilst he responded to S. Scriven's request to hold, he was of the opinion that Hike had been led forward and was in a position to jump away with the field and therefore effected the start. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by Assistant Starter Mr I. Smith and took no further action.
Stewards considered an official complaint from Assistant Starter I. Smith concerning comments made by S. Scriven directed towards him shortly after the start was effected. S. Scriven pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct and was subsequently fined the sum of $1,000.00, of which $500.00 is to be suspended for a period of twelve months acting under the provisions of LR36(h).
Race 5:
Colts, Geldings & Entires NMW - 1200m
1st - Morning Colours; 2nd - Worth Doing; 3rd - Overanxious
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Brian Guy: “Last time it was the bad draw that took him out. That’s all his drawn mate, terrible draws. If you go back to his run at the Gold Coast behind Zero Rock, he’s got beaten by a top filly in a good time. The horse has got a lot of ability, but he’s got no luck with barriers. Today again he had to take on that disadvantage. He was four and five deep along the back. He was three deep after that. But he produced his own today. We know he can do it because he is that sort of horse. He’s just been unlucky with the barriers, that’s all. He would’ve won a lot more races than this. The bloke who owns half of him, (trainer) David Hayes, he’s over there with his horse (Niconero) in Dubai for the big one at the moment. David bought him for Ronnie (Wanless) and then stayed in him himself. He won one race up at Gawler and then Ronnie sent him up to me and said, see what you can do with him up here. He’s gone through his grades now. David’s one of the best payers. He pays his bills. Because he is a trainer, he knows we are all desperate!”
Jockey Larry Cassidy: “I was still very wide early after the jump (from the bad barrier) and it was either take a hold of him and come back or sort of push him forward. I had ringing in my ears that Bryan didn’t want me to go back. So I thought well I’ll push you forward and if it works out, it does. If it doesn’t, well, it’s Bryans fault not mine – and then it worked out, yeah.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Morning Colours): 6.00 out to 6.50.
Favourite (Sleepy Jackson): 3.00 out to 3.50 in to 2.90. Finished fourth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Sir Teles (B. El-Issa) and Malita (App A. Taylor) were both tightened on jumping away between Cyclone Larry (J. Taylor) and Mohawk (S. Drake), which began awkwardly and shifted out. Worth Doing (Matthew Palmer), Cyclone Larry, Mohawk and Morning Colours (L. Cassidy) all raced wide throughout. Near the 600m Count Henry (S. Galloway) improved to the inside of Cambooya (S. Scriven) where there was doubtful room and had to be steadied. Sir Teles (B. El-Issa), which was momentarily held up on the heels of Shadancer (M. Radecker) near the 200m, was unable to obtain clear running inside the final 100m. Shadancer was unable to obtain clear running over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination of Suntanned (App Michael Palmer) revealed the gelding to be sore in the right hind leg. Trainer M. Hassam was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before Suntanned is permitted to race again.
Race 6:
Fernando Pascual Tribute Class 6 Plate - 1350m
1st - Save A Buck; 2nd - Frosty; 3rd - Five Ways
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Trevor Hardy: “He’s never been beaten second-up. I knew he was going okay. I brought him up for his first-up start only because I had to. The tracks down there were too wet. He had a bad draw that day (seventeen out of seventeen), but I had to bring him in to give him a run. He’s done well since he went back home (to Coffs Harbour). I reckoned he was a good chance today. I told Jimmy (Byrne) just to get him back, travelling and make one sprint, because that’s all he’s got. He can sort of really sprint when you let him down, but he won’t go far. He hasn’t got a long sprint, so you’ve just got to time it. He’s a good little horse. That’s six wins from seventeen starts. He’s only missed prize-money once, that was when I brought him up the other day. I might take him down to the Tamworth Cup. That’s over 1400m on April 28. It’s a $70 000 Cup. We might go there.”
Jockey Jim Byrne (who was back in the winners’ enclosure for the first time following a lengthy, injury-enforced layoff): “I had a little bit of pressure early from runners to the outside, but the horse worked throughout pretty good and is pretty relaxed. You know, he’s the sort of horse that likes to hit the line late. You can’t get to the front on him too early, so I kind of tried to time my run perfectly on the horse. When he did hit the front, you know, he kept on accelerating today so I was very, very pleased. It’s really good to be back. I’m really happy with that.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Save A Buck): 4.80 out to 5.00 in to 4.80.
Favourite: (Frosty: 3.00 out to 3.60.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Stewards considered an objection lodged by App L. Rolls the rider of Frosty declared third against Five Ways (D. Browne) being declared second placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference in the home straight. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the official patrol footage stewards established that near the 100m Five Ways shifted out forcing Save A Buck (J. Byrne) out onto Frosty. Stewards were comfortably satisfied when considering the nose margin between Five Ways and Frosty that the contact initiated by Five Ways was sufficient to warrant a reversal of the placings and therefore the protest was upheld.
Sir Kingsford (A. Pattillo) was slow to begin.
Three Swallows (Matthew Palmer) and Save A Buck came together on jumping away. Shortly after the start Five Ways (D. Browne) and Sir Kingsford bumped. Stewards intend to open an inquiry into the reasons why My Limit (S. Scriven) lost ground near the 1000m.
Race 7:
Open Handicap - 1110m
1st - Mr Hornblower; 2nd - Black Ink; 3rd - Simplest
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tracy Green: “He just gets better as he gets older. It doesn’t matter what pressure they put on him. This is the best he has ever, ever been. He came up too quick. I had him pegged for a run on April 18, but I had to do something with him before then ... I couldn’t hold on to him any longer. The draw didn’t worry me. I knew he would be better off out of the way because he takes the furlong to muster some speed. He knows where the line is.”
Jockey Brad Pengelly: ’’He’s a genuine horse, he races really well here, and Tracy (Green) knows him inside out and he’s just a pleasure to ride. He helped me. I just had to ease him at the start and sort of ride for a bit of luck and it all opened for me. The run was full of merit.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Mr Hornblower): 17.00 out to 21.00.
Favourite (Simplest): 3.10 out to 3.40 in to 3.30. Finished third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Mr Aristos (App M. Hughes) and Simplest (L. Cassidy) were slow to begin. Hurl (App A. Taylor), Simplest, Fire Hazard (B. Calkin) and Ra Sun (Matthew Palmer) all raced wide for the majority. Shortly after straightening Kelly (J. Taylor) shifted out taking Momentously (B. El-Issa) out onto Hurl (App A. Taylor). Cocktail Supreme (D. Browne) which was held up for a short period approaching the 200m was again held up for clear running inside the final 100m. A post race veterinary examination of Babinda Half (App O. Turpin) revealed an injury to the near fore suspensory. Trainer R. Bradshaw will be advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness will be required prior to Babinda Half racing again.
Race 8:
3yo QTIS Handicap - 1110m
1st - Chakvetadze; 2nd - Hyde Park; 3rd - Bruleur
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Nolan: “We just had a few niggling problems after her first prep (where Chakvetadze recorded three wins from three starts). We just gave her some time off. When she came back for her next prep she had an injury then and we just had to give her more time. You can never get a guide to her work-wise. She is just such a lazy track worker. At one stage there in the running today, I wasn’t certain whether he (Brent Evans) had given the fence up or not. I wasn’t sure and I thought, if he has given it up .... well, he hadn’t. She settles so well for the speed she’s got. She is a lovely mare. It was really a soft win in the end.”
Apprentice jockey Brent Evans: “I had the two options, come back or go forward. I was happy just sitting where I was. I didn’t really want to bring her back any further. She was relaxed where she was. So, yeah, I stuck to the rails run. She is a smart horse. When I asked her to go ... did she ever! She just took off.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Chatvetadze): 2,00 steady.
The winner was the favourite. It was the only favourite to win on the day.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Rapid Trica (App L. Rolls) and Alphonse (K. Pope) were crowded for room on jumping away between Salice (App C. McIver) and Zahite (K. Yoshida), which shifted out. Hyde Park (J.

IPSWICH REVIEW (FRI, MAR 27)
A review of the meeting held at Ipswich on Friday, March 27.
Race 1:
CG&E Maiden Plate - 1350m
1st - Croix De Fer; 2nd - Well Kept Secret; 3rd - Cotham
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Richie Stephenson: “The other day, in his last start at Eagle Farm, he struck what they call a very shifty track. It wasn’t a heavy track but it was shifty and when he was given his head go on to win the race ... or to try to go on and win the race, he couldn’t go in the going. Prior to that he was a good thing beaten. One of those young kids got put out for knocking him down. He could make a nice horse later on. He is still very immature. Today, I thought he would win back on a good track. I thought he would be hard to beat with the going on top of the ground. The jockey followed my instructions perfectly. I told him to jump out and win.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Croix De Fer) : 3.00 in to 2.40.
Favourite (Travellers Rest): 2.10 out to 2.30. Finished seventh.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Cotham (A. Pattillo) and Diamond Del (B. Evans) were both slow to begin. Nice Looker (C. Reith) was tightened for room at the start between Cape Silver (B. Pengelly) and Croix De Fer (G. Baker), both of which shifted ground. Leaving the 500m, Croix De Fer (G. Baker) commenced to race ungenerously and shifted out, making contact with Diamond Del, forcing that runner wider on the track. Cape Silver was momentarily held up for clear running approaching the 200m. Well Kept Secret (R. Hinricks) had a tendency to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages. Affidavit (S. Drake), Diamond Del and Well Kept Secret (R. Hinricks) all raced wide for the majority of the event.
A post race veterinary examination of Travellers Rest revealed the horse to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer B. Baldwin was advised that a veterinary clearance will be required for Travellers Rest prior to its next race start or trial.
Race 2:
F & M Maiden Plate - 1350m
1st - Facebook; 2nd - Cross Town; Traffic 3rd - Zahnoochi
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin: “I’ve only had the horse for two runs, this one and the one before. The horse was with Shaun (Dwyer) before. We stepped her up a bit in distance today because she gave the impression that she wanted that sort of trip. I’ve had terrible run of good luck with club colours, you know, (which Facebook ran in here) and that just continued here."
Jockey Shane Scriven: “Mate, it was a gutsy effort. I thought if she might have stopped and run fifth or sixth, I would have still been happy with the run. She did it the tough way. A real gutsy effort. She’s got a little bit of a future, you know. She is not going to be a champion, but she’ll win another race, that’s for sure.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Facebook) : 3.00 out to 3.20 in to 3.10.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Miss Attanagh, which was kicked behind the barriers, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.
On return to scale a protest was lodged by J. Byrne, rider of the 5th placegetter, Salcanro, against Zahnoochi being declared 3rd, alleging interference near the 800m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video, stewards found that whilst Zahnoochi (M. Speers) had shifted in passing the 800m and contributed to this incident, they were also of the opinion that Miss Attanah, which was racing to the inside, had hung out at this point of the race and had also contributed to the incident, and therefore the protest was subsequently dismissed and correct weight semaphored on the Judge's number. At a subsequent inquiry, apprentice M. Speers was reprimanded for this incident.
Tell Jean (S. Galloway) and Whydidyouleaveme (A. Pattillo) were tightened for room at the start between Facebook (S. Scriven) and Zahnoochi (M. Speers), both of which shifted ground. Cross Town Traffic (B. Thomson), which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start by Salcanro (J. Byrne), which jumped away awkwardly. Leaving the 1000m, Zahnoochi (M. Speers) shifted in, making contact with Salcanro (J. Byrne), causing both horses to become awkward. The Pocket Rocket (A. Erhart) raced wide throughout. Tell Jean lost its near-fore plate in running.
Race 3:
4yo & Up Maiden Handicap - 1000m
1st - Motor Mark; 2nd - Smartness; 3rd - Jester Canny Go
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Kenji Yoshida: “He has always shown good natural ability. You can forget about the run before this. He got checked very badly at the start and then was severely checked again soon after that. I was always very confident today.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Motor Mark) : 1.80 out to 2.00.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The saddle on Bellaciano shifted when proceeding to the barriers, resulting in that horse having to be resaddled. As the horse was overly fractious, barrier staff were unable to resaddle the filly. As a result, Bellaciano was declared a late scratching at 1.36 pm. Trainer G. Livermore was advised that a warning would be placed on the mare. Trainer G. Reid was fined $50 for presenting Jester Canny Go to the enclosure with incorrect gear. Trainer D. Bougoure was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for Maid Of Cadiz by the prescribed time. Bita Sequalo (G. Geran) and Tuerta Lass (S. Apthorpe) jumped away awkwardly, losing ground. Jester Canny Go (S. Galloway) was forced to check shortly after the start when tightened for room between Motor Mark (K. Yoshida) and Maid Of Cadiz (M. Speers), which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. Smartness (M. Hughes), which raced greenly throughout, shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages. M. Hughes, rider of Smartness, dropped his whip near the 100m. Maid Of Cadiz lost its off-fore plate in running. Belcher (B. El-Issa), Maid Of Cadiz (M. Speers) and Tuerta Lass (S. Apthorpe) raced wide throughout. Jockey W. Clasohm was fined $200 for failing to weigh in 4th on Maizville.
Race 4:
3yo QTIS Maiden Handicap - 1000
1st - Beyond The Limit; 2nd - In A Bind; 3rd - Pearly Beach
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelly Schweida: “It’s good to be talking to you. It just shows that the good guys do win some races. The horse showed us a lot.” (The gelding started favourite in both of his two runs in his first prep). “First start he got a heavy track and missed the start bad, the day he run third. Next start was on the Cushion Track. We don’t think he handled it that well. We are not sure. He showed me a lot more in the trails than he did at the races. I thought, he’s just not there yet. So I said to the owners, we should give him a really good spell, which we did. Brought him back ... he came back a different horse in his coat. He was a little bit under-done for this run. But we might be learning something about him. That might be the way to train him. We had the tongue tie on first time today. We gave him a bit of a jump-out the other day and it seemed to work. The owners have a full sister to him in the sale on Sunday (the QTIS 600 sale at the Gold Coast). They said they would love to win a race a couple of days before the sale with this one.”
Jockey Shane Scriven (who completed a double on the day): “He trialled the other day and he has matured, you know. He’s come back. He is a lovely big horse. He is going to improve a lot on today. He’s done enough for today, but there is a lot of improvement in him. It was a good effort. I don’t think he is a 1000m horse and because of the good prize-money (the race was a QTIS event) that race was a pretty fair race and he beat them with something in reserve there today. He’s got a future as well, you know. The little filly I rode and won on earlier (Facebook), she’s got a future. This bloke has got a bright future.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Beyond The Limit) : 4.60 out to 6.00.
Favourite (Gallant Hawk): 2.50 in to 1.90. Finished seventh.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As G. Geran was to be overweight, J. Byrne was substituted as the rider of Fly Me To The Moon. G. Geran was fined the sum of $100 Little Shrewdy (C. Whiteley), Binda Belle (S. Bogenhuber) and Gallant Hawk (L. Cassidy) were all severely tightened for room and had to be checked between Beyond The Limit (S. Scriven), which shifted out, and Red Cashel (S. Galvin), which shifted in and away from Chillabundy (B. Stewart), which jumped away awkwardly. Shortly after the start, Gallant Hawk over-raced until leaving the 800m. Near the 800m when the pace slackened, Cocorvada (C. Reith) commenced to over-race on the heels of Pearly Beach (K. Banks) and as a result shifted out, tightening both Little Shrewdy (C. Whiteley) and Red Cashel out on to the hind quarters of Hudson Grey (S. Galloway), forcing that horse wider on the track. Red Cashel and Little Shrewdy both had to be checked in this incident and lost ground. Trainer L. Gough was advised that a warning would be placed on Cocorvada. Approaching the 700m, Binda Belle improved on to the heels of Pearly Beach and had to be steadied. Rama Kaho (M. Speers) raced wide throughout and hung out on the home turn. Leaving the 300m, Pearly Beach shifted out, causing Binda Belle to be steadied. Beyond the Limit lost its off-hind plate in running. A post race veterinary examinations of the following horses revealed: Cocorvada - badly galloped on on both hind legs. Red Cashel - galloped on behind. Rama Kaho - no abnormality.
Race 5:
Maiden Handicap - 1666m
1st - Henry's Ann; 2nd - Whykiki; 3rd - Bilinga Bay
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Debbie Newham (after sending out her 50-1 winner): “First start in a race we expected her to show us something. She had no luck at all. Second start she struck a wet track. She does not handle the wet at all. Today, we did expect her to race a lot better up over distance being by Octangonal out of an Al Talaq mare. She had a bad draw. We just left the race-plan up to the jockey and he made the perfect decision. She had to fight in the finish. She showed a bit of ticker. But she’s got the pedigree for a bit of ticker. Her mum (Broann*) did well in the Ipswich Cup. You’d expect her to have a bit of constitution at the end, but it was good to see her put it in on the track.”
Jockey Tony Pattillo: “I decided to get her out and get in front of couple of very ordinary horses. When I say ordinary horses, I mean horses I thought she would deal with. It paid dividends because I ended up only having one horse to beat and one horse to go around. Yeah, she dug deep to get there, but it was only basically a second-up run over nearly 1700m. I think she is not a bad horse ... something to follow in the future.”
*In 1995, Broann won the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown and ran third in the South Australian Oaks. In 1996 the mother of Henry’s Ann finished second in the Ipswich Cup.
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Henry’s Ann): 16.00 out to 51.00.
Favourite (Flawless): 2.70 in to 2.50 out to 3.00. Finished fifth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Raw Sienna (W. Clasohm) commenced to buck shortly after the start was eased out of the race and took no further part in the event. Connections were advised they must obtain a further barrier certificate for Raw Sienna prior to its next race start. Whykiki (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly.
Dolphin Quest (D. Craven) and Umhlanga Rocks (K. Yoshida) were tightened for room at the start and lost ground between Flawless (L. Cassidy) and Suave Consort (B. Stewart), which shifted out.
Near the 1400m, Suave Consort (B. Stewart) was forced to steady from the heels of Proselyte (S. Scriven) and as a result shifted in, tightening the running of All Affair (S. Apthorpe), which had to be steadied. Umhlanga Rocks (K. Yoshida), which was following, also had to be steadied as a consequence. Henry’s Ann (A. Pattillo) raced wide in the early stages. Proselyte raced wide from the 800m onwards. Near the 500m, Two Bibbody Bob (B. El-Issa) had to be steadied from the heels of Bilinga Bay (D. Green), which shifted out. Leaving the 200m, Two Bibbody Bob and All Affair were tightened for room when racing to the inside of Bilinga Bay (D. Green), which shifted ground under pressure. Jockey D. Green, rider of Bilinga Bay, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Umhlanga Rocks was held up for clear running from the 300m until approaching the 100m. Mary’s Halo (S. Drake) raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Mary’s Halo revealed the horse to be lame in both forelegs. Trainer R. Mackay was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for Mary’s Halo prior to its next race start.
When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of Henry’s Ann, trainer D. Newham stated that the horse failed to run on on a rain affected track at its most recent start, and she felt that the horse had worked well during the week and had appreciated the step up in distance, adding that she was not surprised that Henry’s Ann performed well on today's firm surface.
Race 6:
Class 2 Handicap - 1666m
1st - Make Mine Cash; 2nd - Incendio; 3rd - Kaycee's Bid
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Rex Lipp: “Yeah I just thought I’d step him up ... try him over a mile because he has been getting home well in his races. I thought we’d try him over a mile. I always thought he would actually be better over a mile. He seemed to love it. The good alley certainly helped him, but he went like we thought he would. The wasn’t a lot of pace in the race, but he had to be up there. So we made some use of him. The beauty of it is that he handles heavy, slow, good going. He handles anything – it doesn’t matter, which definitely helps you in terms of where you can place your horses. He did well this trip, but he won’t go any further than that. We’ll just take our races as they come.”
Apprentice jockey Brent Evans: “We weren’t going to lead on it. It was slow away and I slapped it up. Anyway got her back and took a sit. It was pulling throughout until that other thing came around me then it went back on the bit and I just got a beautiful run on the inside. The horse in front was three-quarters off the rail and I just give him a yell I was coming. He kept his mount straight and I got the run up the inside. They came at me again at the end, but he was too strong.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Make Mine Cash): 4.00 out to 4.40 in to 4.00.
Favourite (Starsplash): 2.40 out to 3.00. Finished fifth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Epicred (K. Yoshida), French Move (J. Byrne) and Kaycee’s Bid (S. Bogenhuber) were all slow to begin. Shortly after the start, Ground Swell (S. Drake) commenced to race ungenerously and was checked from the heels of Oscar Osetetch (D. Craven), which lost ground after racing ungenerously during the early stages. Veedub (S. Apthorpe) raced wide in the early stages. Starsplash (C. Whiteley) and Nothin Leica Rapid (B. El-Issa) both shifted out to improve at the 600m and raced wide from that point onwards. Leaving the 400m, Kilkenny Queen (D. Green) and Epicred (K. Yoshida) were both tightened for room to the inside of Danger Line (B. Thomson), which was inclined to hang in. Kaycee’s Bid (S. Bogenhuber) was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight. Oscar Osetetch (D. Craven) and Danger Line (B. Thomson) raced wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Starsplash, C. Whiteley stated that the horse had sweated up quite badly prior to the race and had been inclined to hang in throughout the event. He further stated that the horse's wins have both been on rain affected tracks and, in his opinion, may not have appreciated the firmer track today. Trainer Mr A. Bailey confirmed his disappointment in the performance, however was unable to offer any explanation, adding that he would advise stewards of any abnormality that may become apparent in the coming days. A post race veterinary examination of Starsplash failed to reveal any abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the racing manners of Oscar Osetetch, trainer B. Baker was unable to offer any tangible explanation. B. Baker gave an undertaking to advise stewards should anything come to his attention in the coming days that may have had a bearing on the horse's performance today. A post race veterinary examination of Oscar Osetetch failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 7:
Class 1 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Jackpot; 2nd - Downsize; 3rd - So Shall This
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Apprentice jockey Mitchell Speers: “It’s a nice horse. We (the Liam Birchley stable) have only had him for two runs. He was a bit unlucky the other day. I think he go further (distance-wise) and will keep improving. When I asked him to go today, he went quicker than I thought he would so we got there a bit early. Then he switched off a bit. He’ll go 1350m, 1400m. Once he does that I guess we’ll have to see where he goes from there. He is easy to ride.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Jackpot): 2.00 out to 2.50.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Bouillabaisse (B. El-Issa) jumped with its head in the air and lost ground. Snooker Mccue (J. Brown) was slow to begin. Approaching the 200m, Downsize (J. Byrne) was disappointed for a run between Lass Ee (L. Cassidy) and MY CARA MIA (D. Griffin), which shifted out under pressure.
Race 8:
Class 3 Handicap - 1350m
1st - Telesto Warrior; 2nd - Werockit; 3rd - Rock Slide
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Lakey: “Brad (Stewart) just sort of came out with the plan that he was always to ride him just in behind them then take them on in the straight. It worked well. The horse likes it here.”(Telesto Warrior has now won three out of five starts at Ipswich). “We’ve also had a bit of luck here. Distance-wise we still have to find out how far he goes. We did try him over 1500m in town two runs back. He was a bit cramped up for room that day. When he got out the last 100m ... or the last furlong that day when he got clear, you know in that class of race, it was probably all over, so I wasn’t too disappointed that day.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Telesto Warrior): 4.00 out to 5.00. Equal favourite.
Equal favourite (Werockit): 4.80 out to 5.00. Finished second.
Equal favourite (Spirito Volante): 4.20 out to 5.00. Finished sixth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Werockit (B. El-Issa) was slow to begin. Two And A Kick (D. Griffin) blundered on jumping away and shifted out, making contact with Spirito Volante (L. Cassidy), which in turn shifted out and bumped Bold Distinction (J. Byrne). Quisatana (B. Looker), which was slow to begin, was tightened for room shortly after the start between Tenterfield (M. Speers) and Willyclang (M. Paget), which was taken out by Rock Slide (B. Evans). Burrows (J. Murphy) jumped away awkwardly, losing ground. Burrows, Zsazsa (K. Yoshida), Hello Christmas (R. Goltz) and Willyclang raced wide throughout.

SUNSHINE COAST REVIEW (SUN, MAR 22)
A review of the meeting held at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday. March 22.
Racing was switched from the scheduled grass meeting to the Cushion Track.
Race 1:
4yo & Up Maiden Plate - 1600m
1st - Real Grand; 2nd - National Soldier; 3rd - Dane Raider
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Ian Jackson: “He’s been very consistent and very honest. He is just a lovely horse to be with. Very friendly ... very quiet. He is a good horse to ride at home. I’ve done a bit of show-jumping on him as well. It has taken a while, but he deserved to get his win.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Real Grand): 3.80 out to 4.20.
Favourite (National Soldier): 2.50 out to 2.60 in to 2.50. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Dane Raider (N. Thomas) had a tendency to over-race whilst racing wide during the early stages. Near the 300m, Kinda Modern (J. Piper) was forced to check when attempting to take a tight run to the inside of Shaqino, which shifted in. J. Piper, rider of Kinda Modern, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Dane Raider (N. Thomas) had a tendency to lay in throughout the event.
Race 2:
3yo & Up Maiden Plate - 1200m
1st - Kalinga Lady; 2nd - Renegade Dancer; 3rd - Go Rainey
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Carmel Richardson: “She keeps drawing the bad alley. She draws outside every time we nominate her. She got it again today and we said, no you’ve just got to run now. The plan was just to lead and then hope she could keep going. She did. She finished off well. She has been racing well all of the time. She’s just had no luck.”
Jockey Tony Pattillo: “Yeah, we just went forward from the outside draw. We just jumped on the bunny. She ran really good. She was sort of struggling to get the 1000m and we didn’t know which way to go with her. Once we got up to a little bit further along the road, the 1200m – well we had to come back to 1100m because they switched to the Cushion Track – but it is still that extra bit of distance where they go a little bit slower and we thought that might suit her better. She got to the lead. She got it on her own and she dictated. She was strong enough at the line. I was quite happy with the way she won. I think she can win another couple of races. Fingers crossed.”
PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Kalinga Lady): 3.30 out to 3.50 in to 2.80.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As C. McIver was ill, D. Griffin was substituted as the rider of Kalinga Echo. Trainer N. Flouskos was given permission by the stewards to race Stalwart Garza without hoof pads. The start of this race was delayed when Stalwart Twist (M. Morris) reared and became cast in the barriers. Stalwart Twist was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to race. I’m All Yours (A. Badger) was slow to begin. Imposing Belle (S. Galvin) lost ground when was tightened for room at the start. Red Rocker (N. Thomas) and Stalwart Twist (M. Morris), which jumped away awkwardly. Kalinga Echo (D. Griffin) and Coolbadah Comet (R. Hinricks) raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Stalwart Twist revealed the horse to have been galloped on on the off-fore pastern.
Race 3:
3yo Class 2 Handicap - 1400m
1st - River Perfume; 2nd - Papal Joy; 3rd - Qwerty
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Charlie Weston: “She had good city form (finishing a couple of length back to the likes of the smart Seesawing and Meet George in her last two starts). I wasn’t certain how she would handle the track, but she went good. She was second-up today and went up in distance little bit (from 1300m to 1400m). I think she’ll get a mile or better – 2000m, I think. She usually likes the outside, but she ranalright today on the inside which is another plus.”
Jockey Shree Drake: “Yeah, we stuck on the fence early. She is a horse that gets back, so sometimes it is not an advantage having gate one. But I thought ... well, I did try to dig her out a bit ... but I I’m thinking, gee I’m near the lead - there must be no pace. But then everyone went forward. I was worried again she’d go back, but that was no problem with the small field. In the end we all had to fight. I didn’t want to go to the inside. I thought it was going to be softer and I wouldn’t pick up as much momentum. She gets kept fighting. It was a great finish.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (River Perfume): 3.30 out to 3.60.
Favourite (Papal Joy): 2.90 in to 2.80 out to 3.00. Finished second.
STEWARD REPORT EXTRACT:
La Bella Luisa (D. Griffin) was tightened for room at the start by between Qwerty (C. Reith) and Sir Reason (O. Turpin), which shifted out. Jockey A. Pattillo, rider of 2nd placegetter, Papal Joy, was fined $300 for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram overweight. A post-race veterinary examination of Papal Joy revealed the presence of blood in the off nostril as a result of a laceration in that nostril.
Race 4:
Class 1 Handicap - 1000m
1st - Bonza Bronze; 2nd - Wonkavator; 3rd - Beautiful Memory
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Ron McCrae: “They rode him for speed last time and he just doesn’t hit the line, you know. So we designed it today to ride him back, so he could get home. I think he’ll go 1200m ridden quietly. He just doesn’t seem to want to breath if you hunt him up early. You get bad alleys and that is why they have had to use him up early to get across. He is definitely better ridden quietly.”
McCrae was then summoned to the Stewards Room, where apprentice Michael Hellyer, the rider of the third placed Beautiful Memory, had lodged a protest against the winner, Bonza Bronze.
Apprentice jockey Michael Hellyer (giving his grounds for objection): “At the start Christian Reith’s mount has jumped awkward. It’s crossed me at the start and put me on to Christian Reith’s heels. I therefore have had to grab hold. He’s bumped my horse off balance pretty badly. My horse usually is an on-pace runner. It sits second or third. I’ve lost all ground straight away. Being that my horse has only has a few starts, it’s knocked me off balance and I was a good ... at least three to four lengths off him after the incident. I’ve therefore had to use her up early to catch up to the field. In the straight, because I had to use her up early, she’s got nothing left.”
Jockey Christian Reith had no questions for apprentice Hellyer.
Jockey Christian Reith (making his statement): “If you look at the head-on film, definitely, my horse does begin awkward. I believe if you have a look at the horse in the pink colours in gate six (Questify), it jumps and shifts in, hits Michael Hellyer’s horse, which makes contact with mine. It hits my horses hindquarters, which puts my horse sideways. It makes it look like my horse bored out but actually, while my horse begin a bit awkward, you can see I steered it off. But when that horse outside has made contact with Michael Hellyer’s horse, it has cannoned it into my horse which screwed Michael’s horse sideways. My horse is an on-pace runner. I had to correct my horse, straighten it up. I lost ground. I was back further than I was supposed to be. Coming to the home turn, Michael Hellyer is about a half-length off me. He gets nearly level with me, then my horse kicks away and beats by a fair, decent margin.”
Apprentice Hellyer had no questions for Reith.
Pat Duff (trainer of Beautiful Memory): “At this stage, in a situation like this, I’ll leave it in your hands. We won’t hold up proceedings.”
Ron McCrae (trainer of Bonza Bronze): “I feel the same way.”
The objection was dismissed.
Bonza Bronze was pick-up ride for Christian Reith (replacing the ill Bobby El-Issa) and it allowed him to keep his momentum going after riding a back-to-back double at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
PRICE FLUTUATIONS:
Winner (Bonza Bronze): 4.40 out to 5.00 in to 4.40.
Favourite (Wonkavator): 2.70 out to 2.90. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
On return to scale a protest was lodged by M. Hellyer, rider of the 3rd placegetter, Beautiful Memory, against Bonza Bronze, alleging interference at the start. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video, stewards found as the start was effected, Beautiful Memory lost ground when tightened for room by Bonza Bronze, which shifted out, and Questify, which shifted in. As Bonza Bronze could not be held solely responsible for the incident, and taking into account the 1,75 margin between the relevant horses at the finish, stewards dismissed the protest and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge's placings.
Approaching the 500m, Wonkavator (M. Speers) improved on to the heels of Stalwart Honey (E. Wilkinson) and had to be steadied. Beautiful Memory (M. Hellyer) was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
Race 5:
Class 3 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Yuketan; 2nd - Gazillion; 3rd - Falling Star
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Trevor Miller: “The tongue-tie (on first time) definitely made a difference. Racing without it was definitely an issue last time. He choked down the other day. That’s why I backed him up. I normally wouldn’t have backed him up. I just wanted to prove that we’d solved the problem. He is quite comfortable over this distance (1200m). I think 1400m would also be no problem, you know. He travels good through a race. He’s pretty strong all the way through and he can do it at both ends.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Yuketan): 3.00 in to 2.50.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Mighty Canny (A. Merritt) shifted out at the start, making contact with Tunes Of Gold (D. Griffin). Mighty Canny then commenced to race ungenerously for a short distance. Gazillion (S. Drake) lost ground at the start when tightened for room between Bella Heart (O. Turpin), which shifted out, and Falling Star (C. Reith), which shifted in. Gazillion was momentarily held up for clear running near the 500m. Falling Star (C. Reith) was inclined to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages. Nasadispute (J. Piper) raced wide throughout.
Race 6:
Class 5 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Pertinence; 2nd - Wings Of Seraph; 3rd - Seraphino
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Troy Hall: “She’s got a great record here (six wins). She just loves Coloundra. She loves it here. She is a good mare who just keeps paying her way. Damian (Browne) handled her beautifully. He is a great jockey – a beautifully balanced rider. The run came at the right time. He had to push through to beat my old horse (Seraphino). It was terrific ride. She’s going to Brisbane over 1500m in a No-Metropolitan-Win race next time. Hopefully Brownie can make the weight on her. He’s only had the two rides on her for two wins. The 1500m trip will probably be as far as she goes. I’ve tried her at 1600m. She just can’t get it. Brownie knows how to nurse her. He’ll get her the 1500m.”
When Hall mentioned that his runner had to push through ‘to beat my old horse’, the runner he was referring to was Seraphino, who was one of nine horses that Hall previously had in training for high profile owner Nick Moraitis. All of those horses were recently removed from Hall’s care.
Trainer Troy Hall (explaining the change): “Basically, Nick (Moraitis) had a stable manager who looks after all of his horses up here in Queensland. The manager and I had a falling out and so the horses have moved on. That’s basically what happened. It was a shame, you know. We had a fantastic time training Nick’s horses. We won ten starts from thirty-five runners. We did have a very good strike-rate but, anyhow, hopefully one day Nick might come back to us. I certainly never fell out with Nick. The guy who was managing the horses in Queensland, we had a falling out – and that’s how it is, you know. We started with one horse from Nick and ended up with nine horses in the end. We built up a nice team and I think that is where the manager started to want to put too much of his input into it. I’m my own man and so that’s how it finished up. I’ve still got a handy sized stable and other horses that were due to come back in to work are doing so now. The downside is that Nicks horses were all fit and ready to run, whereas those coming in now are going to take some time to get ready, so, in that sense, it has slowed the stable down – but we’ll get there all right.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Pertinence): 2.70 out to 2.80 in to 2.30.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Star Touch (G. Baker) and Seraphino (K. Pope) jumped away awkwardly. Star Touch, which raced with its head in the air and over-raced for the majority of the event, shifted out near the 1100m and hampered Seraphino. Shortly after, Geebeetee (N. Thomas) was forced to steady and shifted out to avoid the heels of Star Touch. Geebeetee raced wide from the 700m. Approaching the 300m, Semi Wells (C. Reith) was hampered when tightened for room between Seraphino and Pertinence (D. Browne), which shifted out to obtain clear running. Seraphino raced wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Geeteebee, N. Thomas stated that, in his opinion, the gelding raced disappointingly, adding that Geeteebee travelled well until asked for an effort near the 700m, however failed to respond to his riding from that point. Trainer Mr B. McLachlan agreed that the performance was disappointing and advised that Geeteebee would be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of Geeteebee failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. A post-race veterinary examination of Star Touch failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 7:
Open Handicap -1000m
1st - Braebrook; 2nd - Clouds of Cognac; 3rd - Fire Hazard
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tony Sears: “He has to be ridden like that (cold – from behind) otherwise he just doesn’t get to the line, you know. That’s the only way you can ride him. You would expect him to pick up the way he did today when Tony (Pattillo) asked him, because he is a pretty handy horse. He may have one more run here in a fortnight. Otherwise, I’ll give him a short break and I’m going to take him up for the Rocky Lightning.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Braebrook): 1.30 out to 1.50.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Clouds Of Cognac (M. Hellyer) began awkwardly, losing considerable ground. Near the 200m, the tiring Lackadosh (A. Badger) was tightened for room between Clouds Of Cognac and Fire Hazard (S. Apthorpe), which shifted in under pressure. S. Apthorpe, rider of Fire Hazard, was reprimanded and reminded of his obligations to be fully clear when shifting ground. Braebrook lost its off-fore plate in running. Court Adjourned lost its near-fore plate in running.
Race 8:
Class 1 Handicap - 1400m
1st - Godly; 2nd - Ana Me Cori; 3rd - Elton's Son
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Troy Pascoe: “I’ve only been training since around December. It’s my second win. I won a Maiden him at Texas (on December 13). Winning here is a little bit different from that. I am very happy with the way things are going and with the way he put it all together today.”
The result gave jockey Tony Pattillo a treble on the day.
Godly was the fourth successive favourite to win on the day.
The favourite won all four legs of the Quadrella.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Stewards accepted the explanation of trainer D. Peoples for the late notification of N. Thomas as the rider of Samsoon. As Michael Palmer was injured, J. Taylor was substituted as the rider of Vistula Belle. Emgee Em Grand (M. Hellyer) raced wide during the early stages. Near the 800m, Samsoon (N. Thomas) was forced to steady from the heels of Elton’s Son (L. Appo) when the pace steadied. Leaving the 600m, Bohica Baby (J. Piper) shifted out, making contact with Ana Me Cori (C. Reith). Near the 500m, Isti Polly (E. Wilkinson) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Jedi Starfighter (A. Badger), which shifted in. Ana Me Cori was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight. Jedi Starfighter (A. Badger) raced wide throughout.

EAGLE FARM REVIEW (SAT, MAR 21)
A review of the meeting held at Eagle Farm on Saturday, March 21.
Track-rating: Dead 4 (Upgraded to a Good 3 after Race 2). Rail: True.
Race 1:
Class 6 Plate - 2200m
1st - Drumshanbo; 2nd - Encosta Tszyu; 3rd - Dawns Queen
Trainer Michael Nolan: “He is a promising stayer. First go at the trip and he has run it right out again, you know. It was a good sound effort. He really put paid to them. He is only lightly raced. I know he pulls, but I don’t want to take the blinkers off because I don’t want to change things while he’s getting these results.”(Drumshanbo has won four out of twelve starts with five minor placings). “ We’ll probably give him another one of these races. We were going to give him a bit of racing before the Winter and then spell him, but he handles wet and dry ... whether he is up to something during the Winter ... who knows? He is much improved. We had him in a Class 3 at the Gold Coast today over 1800m. It was a real easy race. The owners said, oh no, we want to see if he’ll run 2200m. I said, right. We got the answer today.”
Apprentice jockey Michael Palmer: “He jumped up in distance. I think the further ...you know the 2000m, 2200m races are a lot better for him. The other day (when winning his previous start over 1818m) he just never really settled and sort of wanted to reef and tear. Well, today he just settled and raced a lot better. I sort of had a sneak look back halfway up the straight just to make sure I was going alright. I didn’t want to put him under more pressure than necessary. Today he was a lot more focussed than the other day. The last time he wanted to look around a bit. He’ll go through his grades.”
For the record, Michael Palmer’s brother Matthew did complete all of his engagements during the afternoon. Matthew Palmer was the focus of some concern following an incident at Ipswich on Friday, when his mount Star Cure bolted through the barriers prior to the second race and left the rider receiving medical attention for a lengthy period of time, after which he was transferred to hospital for further examination.
Apprentice jockey Matthew Palmer (talking later on Saturday about the drama at Ipswich on Friday): “The horse went right down on the ground and got out under the gate. Because the gate didn’t open he just put be against the metal and jerked my head back. Because I’d broken my neck before, that’s why they were so careful with me. To be honest, I don’t remember that much. I thought they just put me straight in the ambulance. I didn’t realise it took so long. So I must have out for a while. I’m very sore now. I’m on a lot of pain-killers. We’ll see how it is tomorrow. Right now it’s pretty uncomfortable.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Drumshanbo): 7.00 out to 9.00.
Favourite (Encosta Tszyu): 2.00 out to 2.50. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Peaceful Honour (App L. Rolls) jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Moon Chaser (App M. Hellyer) and Dawns Queen (App C. McIver) made contact on jumping away. Drumshanbo (App M. Palmer) raced wide in the early stages. Near the 1500m Drumshanbo commenced to over-race and improved up onto the heels of Father Dex (C. Reith) and had to be steadied. Fort ‘N’ Won (App O. Turpin) raced wide until a point near the 1200m.
When questioned regarding the performance of Fort ‘N’ Won App O. Turpin stated that the horse jumped well and whilst he was obliged to race three wide until well into the back straight he was of the opinion that Fort ‘N’ Won was very disappointing. Trainer's representative Mr M. Dunn advised stewards that Fort ‘N’ Won would be sent for an immediate spell. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormality.
Race 2:
2yo Handicap - 1300m
1st - Fantastic Blue; 2nd - Choistar; 3rd - Spinelli
Trainer Paul Nolan: “I bought him at the Magic Millions sale. Gerry (Harvey) said to me, don’t race him as a two-year-old mate ... he won’t make a two-year-old. I said Gerry you stick to selling fridges and I’ll train horses. He cost $55000, which is a bloody lot for me, I can tell you. I’ve got a few plans for him, but I’m not divulging anything now. It’s a secret. Keep watching the papers. No, seriously, he could have gone into the Magic Millions race next Saturday, but they don’t count that money. I want to win the Sires Produce (on May 30) with him, that’s what I want to do. So I’ve got to go where the money counts. We’ve just been stepping him up gradually in distance. He’ll get a mile.”
Jockey Larry Cassidy: “He is a really nice horse. He has got a lovely action on him and when he flattens out, like he really gets low to the ground and really lengthens stride. He was pretty lazy the last bit when he got to the front. He will run a mile – no problem. I would think he would get further, but that’s harder to say at this stage. But I’m certain he’ll get a mile, no problem at all.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Fantastic Blue): 2.50 out to 3.00.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The Goddess was declared a late scratching at 12.41 p.m. by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice after the horse became cast in the barriers. Stable foreman for trainer B. Baldwin was advised that The Goddess must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to its next race start.
Neeson (R. Goltz) jumped out at the start taking Finx (App M. Palmer) out onto Show Me Why (App L. Rolls), which in turn shifted out hampering Fantastic Blue (L. Cassidy). Empezar (K. Pope) jumped out at the start making contact with A Touch Of Frost (App B. Evans), which shifted out hampering Warrego (M. Radecker). Show Me Why faltered near the 1100m. Empezar which raced ungenerously throughout the event shifted out leaving the 600m taking Choistar (A. Pattillo) wider on the track. Stewards intend to question trainer T. Miller in regards to the racing manners of Empezar. Succeed And Exceed (App A. Taylor) hung in when placed under pressure in the straight. Tonzaticka (J. Byrne) which raced wide throughout, had a tendency to lay out. A post race veterinary examination of Empezar failed to reveal any abnormality. A post race veterinary examination of Show Me Why failed to reveal any abnormality
Race 3:
No Metro Win Handicap - 1400m
1st - Margy Magic; 2nd - Kentish Rose; 3rd - Hear Ye
WINNER FEEDBACK
Trainer Alicia Willick: “He’s so honest. He’s had a couple of weeks out in the paddock. He went to the owner’s property and had three or four weeks out there. It was a last minute decision, we thought this race was pretty weak. We really wanted 1200 – we were looking at a race next week - but we thought we’d throw him in. He’s been a really naughty boy, he’s been jumping out of his skin. It was a good win, a very good win, he’ll only improve on that.
Apprentice jockey Luke Rolls: “The horse let down really well didn’t he? He was good racing fresh. We struck a bit of trouble about the 1000m mark, probably just a tad before ... sort of got up on heels and had to check out of it a little bit. Once he found his feet again, he got travelling nicely underneath me. As soon as he saw daylight he really hit the line.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Margy Magic): 4.40 out to 4.60 in to 4.00. Equal favourite.
Equal favourite (Jacaranda Charm): 3.80 in to 3.50 out to 4.00. Finished sixth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Jacaranda Charm (K. Forrester) blundered on jumping away. Demolir (App O. Turpin) was slow to begin. Margy Magic (App L. Rolls) which had commenced to over-race, improved up onto the heels of Jacaranda Charm near the 1000m and when being restrained shifted out taking Snackman (App B. Evans) wider on the track. Pelltro (J. Brown) raced wide in the early and middle stages. Snackman and Demolir (App O. Turpin) raced wide throughout. Kentish Rose lost its off-fore plate in running.
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey K. Forrester regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Jacaranda Charm. K. Forrester stated that due to the lack of pace in the early stages he was forced to position Jacaranda Charm in a more forward position than he would have liked which is in contrast to the mare's normal racing pattern. K. Forrester explained that in his opinion this did not suit Jacaranda Charm. K. Forrester further added that the mare then travelled comfortably however, was under pressure rounding the home turn and proved very disappointing in the way it had finished the race off. A post race veterinary examination of Jacaranda Charm failed to reveal any abnormality.
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey B. El-Issa regarding the performance of Power Express. B. El-Issa stated that the horse travelled fairly in the early and middle stages however, when asked for an effort upon entering the home straight Power Express changed stride on several occasions and commenced to tire shortly after. Trainer B. Purcell stated that in his opinion Power Express may not have appreciated the firmer surface today and added that the gelding is more affective on rain effected tracks. A post race veterinary examination of Power Express failed to reveal any abnormality.
Race 4:
Open Handicap - 1600m
1st - Honour Happy List; 2nd - Go Cart; 3rd - Tisani Boy
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Danny Craven: “I was back last travelling nice and comfortable. I was very happy where I was. You have got to ride him quiet anyway. When she let down I thought it was going to win by a couple of lengths running away from them, but as soon as it got to the front it said, okay I’ve done my job now, that’ll do me. Just stayed in front. That’s all it did. It was a good run last start. She was a little bit unlucky. A couple of things went wrong last start. She only got beat half-a-length. The trainer (Olivia Cairns) is a very good trainer. She’s very good with her horses. You watch all of her horses are presented one hundred percent before they race and they always race that way too.’’
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Happy Honour List): 13.00 Steady.
Favourite (Tisani Boy): 2.10 in to 1.85. Finished third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Nevada Gambler (App M. Hellyer) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from App C. McIver the rider of Rags To Riches regarding the tactics he employed today on that horse. App McIver stated that he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position and stated that he was able to take up the lead shortly after the start. App McIver further explained that Rags To Riches raced strongly in the lead and when Sam’s Express (App O. Turpin) improved to the outside of him near the 1200m Rags To Riches commenced to race very fiercely. Trainer L. Birchley confirmed the instructions and after viewing stewards patrol footage concurred with App McIver's explanation. Stewards noted their explanations.
Stewards also sought an explanation from App O. Turpin in regards to the tactics he employed on Sam’s Express, in particular the reasons for him improving his position forward and to the outside of Rags To Riches near the 1200m which resulted in an exceptionally quick tempo in the middle stages. App Turpin stated that he had been instructed to have the horse in a handy position and shortly after the start was able to take up a position one off the fence behind Rags To Riches. App Turpin further explained that his horse raced strongly approaching the 1200m and rather than restrain the horse he felt it was in his mount's best interests to allow it to stride forward to the outside of Rags To Riches near the 1000m. Trainer M. Nolan confirmed these instructions however, voiced disappointment in regards to App Turpin's decision not to attempt to restrain Sam’s Express and take up a trailing position behind Rags To Riches given the speed of the race. Stewards advised App Turpin that in their opinion his ride lacked judgement, specifically his failure to attempt to take a position behind Rags To Riches which had become available leaving the 1200m. App Turpin was advised that he would be required to attend apprentice training and undertake sessions of tutelage with Queensland Racing Limited's riding instructors.
A. Pattillo the rider of Pay me was reprimanded for using his whip to excess. When assessing penalty stewards took into account A. Pattillo's exemplary record.
Race 5:
NMW Handicap - 1000m
1st - Backstabber; 2nd - Hail Free; 3rd - Fiamore
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Brett Dodson: “(Trainer and part-owner) Tim Martin had a few problems with him. He went sore. After his run at Wyong, he sort of half-retired him. He had a sesamoid problem. In fact he was in plaster for a while down at Tim’s. At first they said they weren’t going to bring him back. He seemed to recover pretty well. A few of the guys in the horse, who live in Tamworth, I used to knock around with them, the same as Tim, and they said, why not let him go to Coffs Harbour and give him a bit of a go over there. I said I would take him along on the basis that if there was any sort of sign he was going to go, well then I wouldn’t press on.
“We tried a few tricks with him. So far it’s worked. He gets plenty of swimming. I mean he’s had the saddle on once ... he had the saddle on him on Tuesday ... that’s the first time he’s had a saddle on since his last run (on February 28). He doesn’t get worked much, but I suppose that is what you’ve got to do to get steel these horses up. He is a lovely horse. We knew he could gallop. It was just a matter of steeling him up. Ah, yeah he had to fight in the finish. He showed a bit of ticker for sure. Any horse that has had that sort of injury and has recovered from it so well, has already shown you that he has got a bit of ticker in him ... and, like I say, we knew he could gallop. It took both the ability and the heart to win today. We’ll give him a break now. I just wanted to turn the horse out all put together. The minute he performed like he did, it was a bonus. But that horse going into the paddock now is going in good. You’ll be confident you can bring him back strong. I’ve only had him for three runs (which have brought a hat trick of wins). Three out of three, so he’s certainly been good to me.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Backstabber): 3.50 out to 3.70.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Fiamore (R. Wiggins) and Snowladd (App L. Rolls) came together at the start. Carry On Doctor (E. Wilkinson) shifted out at the start and bumped Patties Mate (D. Craven). Bradfield (C. Reith) was slow to begin. Shortly after the start True Flyer (K. Yoshida) was tightened between Decibella (App A. Taylor) and Admiral Gherkin (L. Cassidy) which shifted in. Near the 600m Tejada (App M. Palmer) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Admiral Gherkin which shifted in. Patties Mate hung in when placed under pressure in the home straight. Decibella raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 6:
3yo Handicap - 1200m
1st - Plain Magic; 2nd - Leapfrog; 3rd - Surrounded By Sin

Trainer Kelly Schweida: “She’s always shown a lot. He’s done a good job today, because I backed right off her after she won – work-wise. We had to pick her up again. She is only a light little filly. She had to put it in here. She showed fight in the finish, although I think she ran out of gas about 50m out, but she had that extra bit of ability which allowed her to just carry on. She is a tough little filly. It’s hard to win going from a Maiden to a Three-year-old Handicap.”
Jockey Christian Reith: “She is a nice filly in the making. She had a couple of hiccups last preparation and Kelly (Schweida) got her over that. She’s always had ability. She tracked up good. Everything went according to plan in the race and I’m very happy with her effort.”

Turpin) was obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of Mountain Brew, which was receiving pressure from Alioop. A short distance later Meet George then had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Mountain Brew, which again was taken in. Heza Flashman (K. Yoshida) which was following had to be steadied as a consequence. Near the 700m Mountain Brew improved up onto the heels of Plain Magic (C. Reith) and shifted out making contact with Alioop. Mountain Brew then became unbalanced and faltered. Seesawing (J. Byrne), Tears’N’Çheers (App B. Evans) and Casholet (App M. Palmer) all raced wide for the majority of the event. Near the 350m Rovert (D. Browne) shifted out hampering Heza Flashman. Approaching the 200m Navigation (B. Race 7:
Open Handicap - 1300m
1st - Watchyerback; 2nd - Vietnam; 3rd - Nellie Got There
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Murphy: “He is a nice old horse. He should really have won at Doomben. Then he went to the Gold Coast and we dropped him back to the 1200m. Over the 1200m at the Gold Coast – it is a tight track, he is a big horse, it was wet and he was slipping and sliding around the place. It rained all day and the track was slippery and he just couldn’t get his footing. They lose their confidence in those conditions. Today is the first time I got a nice track for him. The sting out of the track suited him. He got a good hold and he extended out well. We ran him further back, and he got home. He is an eight-year-old so we have to look after him. He’s had problems – bad knees, bad feet, bad joints – all just wear and tear. He is a big animal too, which doesn’t help. You can’t do too much with him. I just take him to the beach and swim him. That’s all. I’ve had him for two runs now. I got him from (trainer) Phillip Pengelly. He came down here with the horse and then left the horse with me when he went back.” (Pengelly, the father of jockey Brad Pengelly, is based in Gladstone). “I’m not certain where he will go next. I think Phillip wants to prepare him for the Newmarket in Rocky. Maybe he will reconsider that. In two weeks time there is a mile race here, a one metro win in the last twelve months. You think he could win that wouldn’t you? He might get a bit of weight but he is a strong horse.”
Jockey Christian Reith (who completed a race to race double on the day): “He didn’t have much luck in the running, but the horse is better racing outside of horses. He was three deep with cover. I got on the back of one and was able to track it through, which helped a lot and, you know. He went to the line full of running.”

Trainer Brian Wakefield: “He really didn’t have a good run from the barrier last time and he only got in .... Luke rode him very well ... but he just didn’t have any luck that day. He only just got in around 100m or so and then he had to start making his run again. He was three wide here again today all the way. He did it well. We’re looking at another one of these races next week at Doomben.”
Apprentice jockey Luke Rolls (who completed a double on the day): “Last time the draw got us and I thought it was going to get us again today but the horse was a touch fitter. He began so well. I was told to ride him a bit quieter, but I got caught wide, so I thought there was no point in hunting forward. He had no weight on his back so I thought I would just keep him balanced. He relaxed very nicely underneath me. He is a nice, big horse and he covers ground well. He is going to win more races.”

Bushland (K. Forrester) and Hodges Street (App A. Taylor) made heavy contact on jumping away. Seething Duck (App B. Evans) jumped away awkwardly. Time And Dandy (D. Craven) had to be steadied shortly after the start when tightened for room between Ulladulla (B. El-Issa), which shifted in and Abbacina (S. Galloway) which shifted outwards. Approaching the 1000m Seething Duck had to be steadied when Hodges Street shifted in when not clear. App A. Approaching the 100m Seething Duck had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Ulladulla which shifted in. B. El-Issa was reprimanded. Frosty (App L.
