HRO SET TO TAKE NEW DIRECTION
The Horse Racing Only (HRO) brand will be taking a new direction with the upcoming launch of the www.horseracingonly.com.au website.
The new site will provide a fully comprehensive account of racing in Queensland and will also give in-depth coverage of racing on the national and international stage.
Apart from expanding the coverage enjoyed up to now at horseracingonly.blogspot.com, the new site will also be more user-friendly, with easy navigation coming with just the click of a button.
As a consequence of the workload and time constraints required to finalise the launch of www.horseracingonly.com.au, the posting of reviews and photos to this blogspot in the coming week will not be as regular as it has been up until now.
Thank you for your understanding.

GOLD COAST REVIEW (SAT, MAY 2)
A review of the meeting held at the Gold Coast on Saturday, May 2.
Track - Good 3. Rail - True.
STEWARDS SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT EXTRACT:
Stewards intend to question D. Oliver regards to his failure to fulfil his engagement on Sir Coup in Race 1. Stewards also wish to question D. Oliver in regards to his failure to seek permission to leave the race course.
Race 1:
Class 6 Handicap - 1800m.
1st - Prix Du Sang; 2nd - Humma; 3rd - Hear Ye
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Moroney: “She is a light-framed filly, not dissimilar to Eskimo Queen. Always showed us she was pretty good ... and we always had a plan to get her here. But she just had a bit of bad luck. Some things went wrong and she was a bit immature, so we couldn’t make it to the fillies’ races over there (in New Zealand). We had to take our time with her, so we always had a plan to do something with her in the Autumn or the Winter. She hasn’t run for six weeks, so whatever she did today she’s going to improve upon. She’ll go to the Doomben Roses now and then hopefully she’ll go on to the Oaks. I don’t think Kerrin (McEvoy) has any other engagement there, but, you know, if you hoping to put Kerrin on, you run the risk of Darley running something.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Petuski and Pawnee Brave were both slow to begin. Shortly after the start Mister Tivoli had to be steadied when tightened for room between Humma and Rezyana. A short distance later Humma shifted out and made contact with Rezyana. Rezyana raced three wide throughout. Hear Ye and Showciti both over-raced in the early stages.
When questioned regarding his riding of Showciti in the straight A. Pattillo stated that shortly after straightening his horse was travelling well and he was disappointed for running between Humma and Hear Ye. As a consequence of missing this run he had to shift out and endeavour to find running between Hear Ye and Prix Du Sang. A. Pattillo stated he was again disappointed when Hear Ye shifted in slightly and in an endeavour to go forward had to shift to the outside of Prix Du Sang to find a run. A. Pattillo expressed the view that because of the problems he had in the straight Showciti was unlucky in the race. The explanations submitted by A. Pattillo concerning his riding in the straight were today recorded.
Subsequent to the race L. Cassidy (Petushki) was afforded an opportunity to explain the poor performance of the horse. L. Cassidy stated that Petushki left the gates awkwardly, as was expected, then took up a nice position in the race behind Sir Coup. He thought that Petushki travelled well until about the 700m, but when put under pressure did not respond, gave ground and generally the run was very disappointing. L. Cassidy stated the horse previously raced in blinkers and it may improve in future if again in blinkers, but in his opinion the run today could not be attributed to the lack of blinkers.
After the race Pawnee Brave was examined by the veterinary surgeon who reported no abnormalities. Royal Excess was examined subsequent to the race by the veterinary surgeon who reported the horse was showing signs of lameness in its off side fore-leg. Before Royal Excess races again a veterinary certificate of fitness will have to be produced. After the race Petushki was examined by the veterinary surgeon who reported the horse was lame in its near side front leg. Before Petushki again races a veterinary certificate of fitness will have to be produced.
Race 2:
Class 6 Handicap - 1400m.
1st - Palace Lover; 2nd - Worth Doing; 3rd - Silvern
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Nolan: “His run first-up was very good. We came down here today and we were reasonably confident. He had form around all of the horses that were sort of favourite. He just had to improve a bit on his first-up run – and he has. There were no issues with him. We just gave him a long spell (between the end of November and the middle of April). We just happy to win these on the way through. He is just a heady rider Brent (Evans). He hunted him forward, then there was pace on so he took a sit. The Ipswich Cup is his goal. It has always been his goal this time in. The Toowoomba Cup is in July this year. Those are his major two goals. His mother (‘tis Love) won a Toowoomba Cup. I trained her. She’s was a good, handy mare.
“That was great. What a great way to start the day. Hope the luck can continue till later in the day, till about race five. That would be good.”
Nolan was referring to his unbeaten runner Chakvetadze, who would face the starter three races later. The filly was out to try to extend her winning sequence to six and the assignment was going to be by far her biggest test yet.
Apprentice jockey Brent Evans (reporting back to Michael Nolan): “I just went to take a sit. He just relaxed under me and when I went for him, he went and I got that run up the inside. I was always sweating on it, but he just kept on grinding.”
Michael Nolan: “I didn’t think you were going to get there.”
Brent Evans: “I think the last bit he really dug deep.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
On jumping Deacon was checked when crowded between Silvern, which shifted in rather abruptly, and Chevron Island which was taken out by Bradfield. The occurrence was accidental. Through most of the race Bradfield was obliged to race wide without any cover. Near the 600m Black Morgan got its head on the side when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Chevron Island. In the early part of the straight Black Morgan shifted out in an endeavour to find clear running and was unable to do so. Approaching the winning post Black Morgan shifted in to obtain a clear run and was again unable to do so and was not properly tested in the run to the line. In the run to the line Cool Edition, which was finishing off strongly from a long way back, was unable to obtain clear running. As a consequence the horse was not ridden out to the post as it normally would be.
App O. Turpin the rider of On The Up pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that near the 300m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Deacon. As a consequence of this Deacon was crowded onto Bradfield, which shifted out slightly and was checked. When considering penalty stewards took into account the guilty plea from App O. Turpin and also the fact that there had been some contribution from the horse on the inside. Therefore, in the circumstances stewards believed the appropriate penalty in this case was that App Turpin's licence to ride in races be suspended for a period of 6 meetings to commence midnight 3 May 2009 and to expire midnight 13 May 2009.
C. Brown (Limani) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out near the 300m when not quite clear of Mr Doyle, which had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Limani. C. Brown was reminded that he must exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
After the race Agnes Dream was examined by the veterinary surgeon who reported no abnormalities.
Race 3:
Ken Russell Memorial Classic - 1200m.
1st - Facile Tigre; 2nd - Trim; 3rd - Movie
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Owner Michael Sullivan: “Ah, he went through the sales. The boys ... Yarraman (Yarraman Park Stud) kept him and were very happy to keep him. You know, we’ve always had a bit of an opinion about him. It’s taken a bit of time. Bruce (McLachlan) has been patient with him. And look what happened. Away he went.”
Trainer Bruce McLachlan: “He’s always shown a lot of promise and he’s backed it up today, coming from a very soft race at Coloundra (which he won by 7.50 lengths on debut) and having to race against a good field, bad alley ... done some work to get there. It’s a great win. He doesn’t have to lead either. He had to today. You’ll find he will settle and relax, but when he was committed to lead, he led and he just showed he’s got a lot of quality. I think he has got a great future. He’ll probably go towards the Sires. We’ll have one more run and then we’ll have a break and go from there. It’s a great thrill for me to win this race (the Ken Russell Memorial Classic). I had a great association with Kenny Russell. He was a wonderful jockey and a wonderful person.”
Jockey Eddie Wilkinson: “Look, it was only his second start in a race. He’s still new. I did say when I got off that she was the best horse I’ve ridden. In the heat of the moment you say those things. I’ve ridden some lovely horses so I have to clarify that. He’s potentially the best. He feels awesome under you. He just travels sweet. We went forward, not necessarily to lead, but in the end we had no option. You ask him to pick it up, he just picks it up nicely. He just switched off under me when he got to the front. From the 600m on he just went through his gears, you know. I used him a fair bit early. He did it at both ends. I thought I could hear them coming. I had a look and they weren’t there. He’s a lovely horse.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
On jumping Trim and Sarge In Charge were crowded for room between Our Moscato, which was taken in by Double Heart and Bella Sirena, which shifted out slightly. No action was taken. Near the 600m Spot On Target, which was inclined to over-race, got its head up when close to the heels of Trim and shifted out abruptly. As a consequence of this incident inconvenience was caused to Movie and also to Double Heart, both of which were obliged to race wide for some distance. K. McEvoy (Trim) explained that the filly, which is still learning as today was only its second run in a race, travelled kindly behind Sarge In Charge, but just after straightening when he would have liked to have shifted out to go forward Catallion shifted in slightly and as a consequence of this he was held up until after the 200m when he was able to obtain clear running. After this Trim closed the race off strongly and in his opinion was most unlucky. The explanation submitted by K. McEvoy was today recorded. After the race the veterinary surgeon reported Double Heart had sustained a small laceration to its off hind leg.
Race 4:
Gold Coast Bracelet - 1800m.
1st - Marveen; 2nd - La Etoile; 3rd - Miss Darcey
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Smerdon: “That’s her trademark. She just sort of puts herself in a spot and then she hits the line. Today was a bit of a test to see if she could stretch her distance out a bit (to 1800m) – 1600m being the furthest she’d been. She was racing like she’d get the extra. She’s always been strong to the line, but we were going into new territory, of course. Against that, she’s been carrying a lot of weight against three-year-old fillies in Melbourne and back to the level weights here probably served her well because she is not a big filly. She weighs about 412kg. That’s a small racehorse. Now we’ll just sort of push on and go to the 2000m at Doomben in two weeks. The indicators are there and if she holds up we’ll go to the Oaks.
“She’s going to the broodmare sale – and she will go through too. The people that own her, they race horses all the time. They have just said that she has become too valuable for their hobby way of doing things, you know. She warrants a high profile stallion which is expensive. She’s sort of raced her way past what they are in it for. They’ve still got the dam ... but, yeah, she will go through the sale.”
Jockey Blake Shinn: “We had a bad draw, but we were able to overcome that and get into a nice position behind the one that was hardest to beat, which was Michael Rodd (aboard La Etoile). The pace quickened from about the 500m and that enabled me to get out into clear running. She swopped onto her Melbourne leg at about the 300m and she really found the line good. I was always confident once I got her out she was going to win. She’s a promising horse heading to the Oaks where I’m sure she will be very competitive.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Nothin’ Leica Cat, which was slow to begin, had to be steadied shortly after the start when tightened for room between River Perfume and La Bella Luisa. Jungle Rocket jumped away awkwardly and shifted in making contact with Gracesynd. Jungle Rocket then raced ungenerously for a short distance and had to be steadied from the heels of Tunes Of Gold. When being steadied Jungle Rocket shifted out hampering Seesawing. Jungle Rocket got its head up and again raced ungenerously rounding the first turn. In the middle stages Miss Darcey was obliged to race wide without any cover. River Perfume was also obliged to cover some ground, but was able to find cover.
Jungle Rocket was unable to obtain clear running until near the 150m. Subsequent to the race the veterinary surgeon reported that Nothin’ Leica Cat had sustained a laceration to the near-hind fetlock joint and there were also abrasions to both front pasterns.
Race 5:
Gold Coast Guineas - 1200m.
1st - Chakvetadze; 2nd - Leapfrog; 3rd - Desuetude
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Owner John Hooper: “My heart’s going two-hundred to the minute at the moment. It’s a terrific thrill to win today. It’s just amazing. She was further back than we expected. She was tardy to get away today ... she normally jumps. She never seemed to be travelling until he got her balanced in the straight and got her out and then she finished really, really well. A terrific win. Six from six and to finish with a Group 3 after six months of racing, starting with a Maiden win at Ipswich, it’s just fantastic.”
Trainer Michael Nolan: “Today was a big test for her, but we thought she’d still race good. I wasn’t confident until about the 100m but, this filly, she just doesn’t know how to get beaten. Brent (Evans – a claiming apprentice in a non-claiming race) has had a couple of rides on her now, that’s why we didn’t change the rider. I know he is only a kid, but he has got a great future. He knows her. She’s a bit hard to get in the barriers and different things like that. She’s just a bit fizzy ... a bit silly. Her going into the machines, I don’t know what that is. It’s just here. She’s got a bit of an attitude. We had a lot of pressure regarding what rider we were going to put on ... with a lot of phone calls and everything else. But we stuck with Brent. He’s done nothing wrong. He is a very confident kid and I think in twelve months time he’ll be riding in these races anyway, you know. There was pressure, but no long debate. John (Hooper – the owner) said go with Brent ... stick with Brent. He had her positioned nice from a bad gate and he timed his run well. We are just really thrilled. She’s a real quality filly. Lauries Lottery was the horse that put me on the map. I’d never change and rate one better than ‘Lauries’, but this filly is just top drawer."
Apprentice jockey Brent Evans: “All credit to the filly. She was back off them a fair way and I had to bring her to the outside. It was unbelievable that she stepped up to the Group 3. I always thought she was going to the Silk Stocking. That’s what we set for her. There was a late change of mind, you know, to go to the Group 3. That’s the best she’s relaxed since I’ve rode her. I rode her quiet a couple of times, but she’s just never relaxed like that before. She’s always been a hard-going horse. It always wants to bowl along, but she relaxed well under me today. It was exciting all the way through, you know, having them next to me - McEvoy and them. All the big names ... yeah, it was good. This is my biggest win – my first Group win.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Feline Flyer jumped away awkwardly and blundered, shifting in making contact with Meet George. She’s Meaner jumped in at the start resulting in Express Air being tightened between that horse and Leapfrog. Shortly after the start Whitefriars and Express Air both had to be checked between Chakvetadze and Jazz Heart, which had been taken out by Tears’N’Cheers, which had in turn been taken out by Brettoneux after that horse shifted away from Youthful Jack. Whilst the crowding was of some significance it was decided that no action be taken. As a consequence of Whitefriars being checked shortly after the start it got well back and then in the middle stages over-raced and got its head up. Doonbah Star and Cat D’Antibes made contact on jumping away. Desuetude, She’s Meaner, Meet George and Brettoneux were all wide throughout. R. Thompson (Youthful Jack) stated that he was of the opinion that whilst the horse travelled satisfactorily in the run when Chakvetadze went forward near the 300m his mount was a little flat footed and momentarily lost its position. He added that Youthful Jack however closed the race off, he thought quite well, it may not have been suited by the firm showing signs of lameness in an off-front leg. Before Youthful Jack races again a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced.
Race 6:
A.D. Hollindale Stakes - 1800m.
1st - Fulmonti; 2nd - Izonit; 3rd - Sir Slick
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Chris Jordan: “Kerry (Chris’ brother) won two Hollindales, He won with Hunter (in 1990) and Corndale (who denied Rough Habit a hat-trick in the race in 1993). He said to me this morning, it might be your turn – and it was. He’s always been a good horse to me and he is not finished yet by the look of it. He’s always threatened to win one like this. That was his first go at Weight-For-Age today. He drew two. He is the sort of horse you can’t dig him out, but once he gets travelling ... and he travelled beautifully for Joe (Bowditch) today, you know, all the way. That’s the sort of way he has got to race, you know. He’s got a good turn of foot, but he can’t sustain a big, long run on it. He’s not nominated for the Doomben Cup, so I don’t know where we’ll go now. I’ll have to discuss it with the owners and see what’s going down. I didn’t nominate for the Cup, so I’ll probably get a boot up the arse for that now.”
Jockey Joe Bowditch: “I was looking to sort of get out and give him clear running, but he was going to be held up. So I went back inside and luckily things opened up for me. He attacked the line. Geez, he dug in. He really tried hard today. I had twelve months off because I did a crucial ligament in my knee and got a broken tibia in a fall in September 2007, so it’s nice to be back with a feature win. That’s my biggest win in Queensland since I moved up here about four years ago. I won the Bernborough, but this tops that.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Riva san jumped in the air as the start was effected and lost ground. Stand Tall jumped out at the start and made contact with the hind quarters of Sir Slick. Rags To Riches raced wide in the early stages. Stand Tall and Imvula raced wide for the majority of the event. Near the 200m Stand Tall and Mission Critical were forced to race in restricted room between The Sportsman and Izonit, which shifted in under pressure. Leaving the 200m Mission Critical, Stand Tall and The Sportsman were all forced to race in restricted room to the inside of Izonit when that horse shifted in under pressure. App J. McDonald (Izonit) was advised to exercise more care and ensure that he stop riding and straighten his mounts sooner than he had on this occasion.
Race 7:
Prime Minister's Cup - 1300m.
1st - Mr Hornblower; 2nd - Rightfully Yours; 3rd - El Cambio
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Michael Nolan (not the Toowoomba trainer), stable representative for the Mick Price stable (speaking directly after the race): “At this stage we are probably heading for the Stradbroke. We had to probably win today to guarantee a run and now that he is in there, Mick will decide. There may be one or two more runs, but the Stradbroke is his goal. That’s what we came here for.
“This horse is a very underrated horse. When he was a young horse he was a colt and he had a few issues. Now that he is gelded, he is a different horse and he’ll improve. What he did today, you’ll see a lot better horse in a couple of weeks time.”
Glen Colless, the rider of the runner-up (Mr Hornblower) lodged a protest against the winner (Rightfully Yours).
Jockey Glen Colless (giving his grounds for objection): “At about the 200m mark I moved up to make my run outside Corey Brown’s mount (Court Command). At that stage I copped a bump to my hind-quarters and I was turned in slightly. I probably went about another stride and then I copped heavy contact from my inside from Corey Brown’s mount. I think all that interference that I copped was caused by Craig Newitt’s mount angling out for a run behind the leader. In doing so it has just unbalanced my horse on two occasions. With the margin only being a head, the fact that I had to stop, rebalance and come again ... I think if I didn’t cop that bump on the hindquarters I probably would have won the race.”
Jockey Craig Newitt (questioning Glen Colless): “Just one question. You say it was at the 200m. I’d say that from the 150m - do you believe - that you had every chance to run my horse down?”
Glen Colless: “I probably have. In saying that ... at the 200m, when I hadn’t even gone for my horse – I was travelling pretty kindly - once I copped interference, it’s probably put it off his game a touch and I’ve had to really chase hard the last 150m. As I said, if I’d just had a nice clear run without copping that interference and not being turned sideways on two occasions, and the margin only being a head ...
Craig Newitt: “Do you believe my horse was turned sideways?
Glen Colless: “Yeah, but that was only from your own doing. It wasn’t my doing.”
Craig Newitt (making his statement): “I raced very keen behind the leader for the majority of the race and the sprint from the corner where he seemed to be wanting to get off the track a little bit. Once I started to roll in to heels, I established a run outside it, albeit very narrow. I believe there was a run there. I expected to be able to take that run. As I got to just outside its hind-quarters, the leader tended to roll off. Being really committed to that run, which I really felt was mine at the time, I had to come out with it to avoid his heels. I did make contact with Corey Brown’s horse, and he in turn with Glen Colless’s horse. I believe after all that was through ... I believe we came out of it probably pretty much on level terms. Within the last 150m my mount started to draw away.”
Michael Nolan stable representative for the Mick Price stable: “I would agree that the horse got a slight bump, but, jockey Colless never stopped riding him for much more than one stride. He balanced himself up and in the last 150m he had every chance to run our horse down."
The protest was upheld.
Trainer Tracy Green (speaking after the objection had been decided): “Yeah, he took a couple of bumps. We didn’t know who caused it in the rush of the moment. But, yeah, we went in and saw the stewards footage and it showed it clear. That puts him over the half-million in earnings now, so that makes our day. He’ll go for the Darley Sprint in a fortnight – and then the Eye-Liner. He is such a nice-horse. He is just a gentleman. The love-child I call him. He’s my love-child. He can be difficult to ride sometimes, but then, you know, we had Glen Colless. He is a genius. An absolute genius he is. What can you say.”
Jockey Glen Colless (speaking after the objection had been decided): “I had a lovely run in the race, three back the fence. He gave me a great ride and then when I got to the outside I always thought I had them covered, you know. Then I copped that bump on the hind-quarters which turned him in. He sort of half-lost all his momentum. Then I copped another one – a pretty hefty one. That really turned him and sort of half put him off his game a touch. I then had to balance up and chase to the line. You know he only got beat a head, so the two decent bumps he got ... I think it cost him.”
This was Colless’ first meeting back in the saddle since being sidelined with injury for some time. Colless seriously injured his toes in a freak accident at Eagle Farm. After surgery and rehabilitation, how was the foot holding up?
Glen Colless: “The foot is just something I’m going to have to put up with for a few more months. It’s just an ache. I did rush my comeback. The doctors, they said another six weeks, so I wasn’t going to sit around. Given this result, I guess you could say it was the right decision.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
J. Byrne was fined the sum of $100.00 for accepting two rides in this event. Stewards permitted D. Oliver to be substituted as the rider of Rampant Lion.
Before the declaration of correct weight G. Colless the rider of Mr Hornblower declared second place-getter sought permission to view the official videos as he was of the opinion there may have been grounds to formally lodge a protest. After this viewing G. Colless on behalf of the connections did formally protest against Rightfully Yours (C. Newitt) being declared the winner. G. Colless alleged interference to his mount near the 200m. After all informed parties had provided evidence and viewed all available video footage of the incident, stewards formed the opinion that as a consequence of C. Newitt (Rightfully Yours) shifting out near the 200m and forcing Court Command onto Mr Hornblower on two occasions and unbalancing that horse significantly, it caused interference to it which had exceeded the head margin at the finish. Therefore, the protest was upheld and the placings were amended as follows: 1st Mr Hornblower;2nd Rightfully Yours;3rd El Cambio;4th Rockpecker
At a subsequent inquiry C. Newitt (Rightfully Yours) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a), the careless riding being that at about the 200m he rode his mount outwards when insufficiently clear of Court Command causing that horse to be forced onto Mr Hornblower. As a consequence of this incident both Court Command and Mr Hornblower were severely unbalanced and Court Command lost its running. C. Newitt was suspended from riding in races to commence midnight 3 May 2009 and to expire midnight 21 May 2009. In addition to this penalty he was fined the sum of $2,000.00. C. Newitt was advised that in deciding this penalty the stewards had considered his guilty plea, but they were also of the opinion that the carelessness he displayed on this occasion was at the highest end of the scale and indeed consideration had been given to a more serious charge being levelled against him.
Leaving the 300m Rockpecker shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with Daunting Lad, which in turn shifted out onto Helideck, which when tiring then shifted out taking Tellasecret out onto Accardo and Bareena forcing them wider on the track. El Cambio was held up rounding the home turn and unable to obtain clear running until leaving the 200m. Rampant Lion had difficulty obtaining clear running for the entire length of the home straight. Near the 200m El Cambio was disappointed when attempting a narrow run between Daunting Lad and Rockpecker, which was taken out slightly by Mr Slick. After the race Activation was examined by the veterinary surgeon who reported no abnormalities were detected.
Race 8:
Silk Stocking - 1200m.
1st - Belong To Many; 2nd Court; 3rd - Russeting
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Travelling foreman for the Gai Waterhouse stable. “She is a lot better, as today, if she is up with the leader or out in the front leading. Last start (when second) she couldn’t get her own way in front ... couldn’t get across. You know Gai’s put a lot of work into her in the last three weeks since we’ve had her. Barbara Joseph had her before. This was her first run for the stable. The syndicate that owned her, they sort of sell out when it gets to a certain stage. She’s a five-year-old mare so they took her to the sales and she was sold and the new owners gave her to Gai to train.”
Jockey Blake Shinn: “First run for Gai. He was very impressive. Got across from a wide draw. Had to do a power of work, especially with 59kg on her back. She travelled well. It was a great win. She exploded when I asked her. So, basically, once we took care of the draw, we had things covered. A long way out I was pretty confident. It was just a matter of pushing the button at the right time. She might win one of these big races over the Winter Carnival.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Russeting, Zero Rock and Insistence (App Michael Palmer) came together on jumping away. Beaming and Court both raced wide for the majority. Near the 600m Hurl improved to the inside of My First Affair where there was doubtful room and had to be steadied, resulting in Tranquility Base, which was following, having to be steadied off that horse's heels. Near the 500m Calchris improved up onto the heels of Quizzical Lady and had to be steadied.

DOOMBEN REVIEW (FRI, MAY 1)
A review of the meeting held at Doomben on Friday, May 1.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 11.5m.
Race 1:
3yo F&M Plate - 1350m
1st - Ella Maree; 2nd - Ms Mickdandee; 3rd - Shocking Blue
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley: “The mother was a good sprinter, but she seems to want ground. That’s why I started her at 1350m here first-up. I’ll robably step her up from here and see if she has got some sort of future over ground. She hasn’t got that really good turn of foot, but she hit the line well. She is a real momentum horse and hopefully the extra distance will suit. She might be an Oaks type of horse, but she just won’t be ready in time. She’s probably got that type of potential, but she would need to be up to about 1800m or 2000m now for that to be a consideration. There’s just not enough time left.”
Jockey Michael Cahill: “I didn’t really want to be where I was in the run, but I didn’t really have a lot of option. At least I was tracking the favourite and that brought me into the race. She was always going to be in the finish if she got a bit of luck. She was determined to go to the line. She just needed the breaks. When they came she was able to capitalise on them. She didn’t shrink from the gap when it came. She’s a nice filly in the making and she’s got a good temperament.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Ella Maree): 3.60 out to 4.00.
Favourite (Ms Mickdandee): 1.60 out to 2.25. Finished second.

Ella Marie (M. Cahill) was crowded on jumping away by Flower Chariot (P. Wolfgram), which shifted in. As a result, Ella Marie shifted in, resulting in Rosslyn Chappel (C. Reith) and Ms Mickdandee (L. Cassidy) being tightened for racing room. Flower Chariot (P. Wolfgram) over-raced in the early stages. Joyful Lady (C. Dixon) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 2:
3yo C&G Maiden Plate - 1350m
1st - Kalakua; 2nd - Carigano; 3rd - Razzled
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley (who completed a quick race-to-race double): “I bought him at the Ready-To-Run Sale for $36000. I just really liked him as a sort of a staying type of horse. He’s been working with the first race winner (Ella Maree) so I knew he would be competitive. He was still a little bit behind her in fitness. All I said to Brad (Stewart) – I didn’t give him any instructions – I just said to Brad, if he gets any sort of run I think he will win, but I’ll leave it up to you what you do. He was confident enough to go quite early. He is a promising horse. Again, just like with the first race winner, I’m a bit behind the eight-ball as far as the up-coming feature races are concerned. He was a slow maturing horse and he is just not forward enough to go to the Derby. So, maybe we’ll look at something like the Grand Prix, you know. He’ll probably go up to 1500m or 1600m next. Probably just go through his classes. We’ll just keep his confidence up. Like I say, he has been a bit slow maturing. It’s not the end of the world. If they ask you for time, you’ve got to give it to them, you know. Then they’ll reward you. If I could get him to the Grand Prix I would be more than happy.”
Jockey Brad Stewart: “He’s got lots of ability. I reckon there was five or six times though when he just kept switching on and off, you know. That’s why I sort of woke him up a little bit earlier than I wanted, because I didn’t want to get to him when he was still flat-footed. It was pretty good.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Kalakua): 2.50 out to 3.00 in to 2.80.
Favourite (Razzled): 2.50 in to 2.20.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The start of this race was delayed as a result of Lander and Silver Spike (S. Seamer) proving difficult to load. Lander (L. Cassidy) was tightened for room on jumping away between Nonethewiser (N. Thomas) and Razzled (M. Cahill), both of which shifted ground. Shortly after the start, Silver Spike (S. Seamer) was crowded for room when racing between Royal Page Boy (Matthew Palmer) and Kalakua (B. Stewart). Near the 1000m, when the pace of the race steadied, Royal Page Boy over-raced at the heels of Kalakua and shifted out. As a consequence, Royal Page Boy was then obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event. Rounding the home turn, Razzled shifted out to improve and in doing so brushed Royal Page Boy.
Race 3:
F&M Maiden Handicap - 1200m
1st - Daytime Drama; 2nd - Sugar Cube; 3rd - Acting Up
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Lakey: “The horse has been a handful from day one - very, very highly strung. Our apprentice, Alexandra Kitson probably gets on best with her. She rides her a lot and gets on really well with her. She was a real handful as a baby. She sort of wanted to drop her head and clear out all the time. It’s thrown everyone. I wouldn’t say it is a buck-jumper. She just takes fright and tips you off. It hasn’t been easy, but she’s a winner now.”
Apprentice jockey Brent Evans: “I was very confident. I just bounced out. I wanted to cross to the paint in front. They wanted to make me do a bit of work, so I just relaxed and stayed out three deep for a while. I mean I had the whole back straight to get there. Then I crossed and she relaxed under me. When I asked for her effort, she just took off. Yeah, it was a nice win. She was just too good for them.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Daytime Drama): 2.20 out top 2.40.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Eurostorm (M. Cahill) and Sugar Cube (K. Banks) were slow to begin. Cheryl The Feral (O. Turpin) and Daytime Drama (B. Evans) came together on jumping away. Near the 150m, E. Wilkinson, rider of A Pair Of Diamonds, had his whip knocked from his grasp by J. Byrne, rider of My Fallacy. Choose A Star (M. Radecker) and Hidden Heart (M. Hughes) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 4:
CG&E Maiden Handicap - 1200m
1st - Northern Praise; 2nd - Bootooloo; 3rd - Sir Mossman
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley (having now saddled a treble on the day): “They just handed it to him on a plate. The rest just sort of backed off and let him do what he wanted to. He dictated and they just let him dictate. He had no choice but to win. He is a reasonable horse. I think he will handle a bit more ground. He has been a little bit slow to work things out. Like the one gate today and the blinkers really made the difference. He probably needed the blinkers first-up last time (on debut). He struck a slow track though, so first-up on that he did a good job without winning, you know.”
Apprentice jockey Brent Evans (who completed a race-to-race double on the day): “Oh mate, the lead that I got was just unbelievable. The last two races was a bit of daylight robbery – particularly this one. The way the race was run there was no way he could get beat.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Northern Praise): 1.50 steady.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Quite Stylish (D. Gill) was slow to begin. Near the 700m, when the pace of the race steadied, Three Mile Island (J. Byrne) over-raced at the heels of Northern Praise (B. Evans). Crackinghorseluck (M. Cahill), which was trailing, had to be steadied, and as a result Quite Stylish improved up onto the heels of Crackinghorseluck and also had to be steadied. Rounding the home turn, Tabooba (M. Heagney) and Bootooloo (B. Stewart) came together and brushed. Sam’s Crossing (Michael Palmer) and Tabooba (M. Heagney) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 5:
Brisbane Bloodstock 2yo Maiden Bonus Handicap - 1200m
1st - False Accusation; 2nd - Game Power; 3rd - Golden Success
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Bryan Guy: “He’s not a bad horse. He ran fourth in the Consolation race at the Magic Millions. He let them all up inside him in the Magic Millions. I reckon if he stayed on the fence he’d probably win. The jockey thought the going was better away from the rail that day so he swung out and the first three place-getters went up along the inside. Anyway, he’s done a good job here. He’s first-up from an outside barrier carrying top weight. He couldn’t do any more. He was gelded while he was out and the gelding has improved him out of sight. The best thing was the way he hit the line. He wasn’t doing that as a colt.”
Jockey Jim Byrne: “Yeah, they made us work a bit. I was going to try and settle in behind them, but the fact is, as soon as I started to try to lock him away, the pace slackens and I’m three deep you know. So I just had to keep pressing forward. He did a good job in the straight.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (False Accusation): 2.20 out to 2.60.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The connections of Iglesia Caret were advised that they would be required to produce a further barrier certificate for the filly, which proved difficult to load. The start of the race was further delayed as a result of Fiesta Gal, which was fractious, becoming cast in the barriers. Fiesta Gal was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. Iglesia Caret (E. Wilkinson) was tightened for room on jumping away between Dubai Girl (P. Wolfgram) and Huckleberry Dane (M. Cahill), both of which shifted ground. Regal Glance (B. El-Issa) and Turn The Tide (C. Reith) were slow to begin. Near the 250m, T. Treichel, rider of Game Power, accidentally dropped his whip. Flashcity (D. Griffin) was caught racing wide for the majority of the event.
Race 6:
Class 2 Handicap - 1660m
1st - Big Girls Don't Cry; 2nd - Strawberry Ripple; 3rd - Papal Joy
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Mel Eggleston: “We are trying to get her into the Oaks and the Doomben Roses and we just hope to pick up enough prize-money, you know. One of them fell right back in her face over there and put her back. At that stage I didn’t think she could win ... but she did ... and it doesn’t matter how far you win by. That’s the best they can do. They can only win and she’s doing that. She had the heavy track to contend with at the Coast. She’s gone to a mile at only her third start. So we can’t complain.”
Jockey Dan Griffin: “We took up a nice position. They are setting her for the Oaks. I wanted to see if she’d get the distance, so I just wanted to give her a nice clean run. They kept coming back on me and it was hard to get a guide whether she was going to see it out, because I kept stop-starting her, you know. In the end, like the win was probably a bit better than it looked. I took off at the 700m mark. Michael Cahill (on More Than Primed ) stepped up his momentum. He had the same idea. He had his rolling quicker than I was and he gave me no real room and went around me. You allow for her being held up there and the win just gets better and better. Then she’s come right down the outside, stayed true and fought on to the last stride. When she stretched I thought we might have got it, but I knew it was the bob of a head. She’s gutsy alright.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Big Girls Don’t Cry).
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Kaycee’s Bid (S. Bogenhuber) and Strawberry Ripple (E. Wilkinson) were slow to begin. Papal Joy (S. Seamer) threw its head in the air and raced ungenerously near the 1200m. Shockie (J. Jones) was caught racing wide in the early stages. Nearing the 100m, Kaycee’s Bid improved up on to the heels of the tiring Mean Machine (L. Cassidy) and as a result had to alter course. Kaycee’s Bid was then unable to obtain clear running for the remainder of the event. Approaching the finish of the race, More Than Primed (M. Cahill) was tightened for room between Shockie (J. Jones) and Strawberry Ripple (E. Wilkinson), which shifted in. E. Wilkinson, rider of Strawberry Ripple, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Race 7:
Class 1 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Gundy Son; 2nd - Downsize; 3rd - Pea Eye Cee
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Heathcote: “The big difference with him this preparation is he has been gelded. He was a real handful last prep ... remember the day he did a bolter around Eagle Farm. The thing that pleased me today was he relaxed, he did everything right, he sprinted to the line hard. Joe (Bowditch) pressed the button and he just went. I think he’s a horse who could measure up to a Saturday, city class, three-year-old Carnival race. We haven’t got rid of all of his nonsense with the gelding. He is still a bit of a lad. I give a bit of credit to Peter Spargo. He is the only track-work rider who sits on him. He does an excellent job with him. He just knows what the horse needs. Oh, he can be a real challenge. There are a lot of people who could not ride this horse in track-work, I can tell you that. So, yeah, it was very pleasing. Even his run the other day in town was good on that wet track. He’s a Falvelon and they don’t handle it. So that was also a good effort.”
Jockey Joe Bowditch: “He showed a good turn of foot. He surprised me how quick he let down when I asked him. I just popped him out to work around the leaders and the next thing he’d got there easy enough. He kicked on good. The horse is only second-up so there is still a bit of improvement in him. We just had a beautiful run. You couldn’t ask for things to work out any better.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Gundy Son): 3.60 out to 4.60.
Favourite: (Surrounded By Sin): 4.20 in to 3.30. Finished tenth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The start of this race was delayed as a result of farrier attention required for The Sixties after the horse sprung its off-side front shoe. The Sixties (A. Merritt) and Brookie Babe (J. Jones) came together and made contact on jumping away. Our Ojay (D. Griffin) was slow to begin. Night Rogues (B. Evans) began awkwardly. The Sixties (A. Merritt) raced ungenerously in the early stages of the event. Near the 500m, John’s Gem (T. Treichel) and Monaleah (S. Bogenhuber) were both tightened for room when racing between Pea Eye Cee (Matthew Palmer) and The Sixties (A. Merritt), which shifted in. Lots Of Success (M. Hellyer) was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight. Night Rouges (B. Evans) was caught wide for the majority of the event. It was noted that whilst racing wide the horse was inclined to hang out between the 700m and 400m section of the race. Leaving the 200m, Surrounded By Sin (L. Rolls) was disappointed for a run between Monaleah (S. Bogenhuber) and The Sixties (A. Merritt), which was taken out by Pea Eye Cee.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Brookie Babe, apprentice J. Jones was of the opinion that the performance was affected by the fact that the filly was obliged to work hard in the early stages of the event to obtain a forward position.
Stewards questioned apprentice L. Rolls regarding the tactics adopted on Surrounded By Sin today as compared to its previous racing pattern of the gelding. Apprentice Rolls advised stewards that the instructions from the trainer today were to allow the horse to settle in a mid to rearward position as a result of the wide barrier. He stated after being unable to obtain a midfield position he elected to restrain the horse to a position at the rear of the field. The explanation was noted. A post-race veterinary examination of Surrounded By Sin after the event revealed the horse to be sore in the off foreleg. Connections were advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be presented prior to the gelding racing again.
Race 8:
Class 5 Handicap - 1110m
1st - Overanxious; 2nd - Equates; 3rd - Rockem
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Jim Byrne (who completed a double on the day): “Yeah, we had a bad barrier but, you know what, they went that fast anyway. That helped us out a lot. He is a horse that can relax too, so it worked out well. We just pushed out wide for a run in the straight and he turned it into a good win.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Overanxious): 7.00 out to 8.00.
Favourite (The Boxer): 4.00 out to 3.50. Finished fifth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The start of this race was delayed as a result of veterinary examination of Hail Free after the horse was kicked by another runner at the barriers. After a veterinary examination, the gelding was cleared to race. Equates (S. Seamer) Rockem (L. Cassidy) began awkwardly. Near the 300m, Nostrum (R. Wiggins) was tightened for room when racing between Jad (M. Palmer) and Hail Free (M. Hellyer), which was taken out by The Boxer (O. Turpin). Whilst acknowledging contributing movement from the The Boxer, the stewards nonetheless reprimanded apprentice M. Hellyer, rider of Hail Free, for attempting to force a passage where doubtful racing room existed. Jad (Michael Palmer) raced wide for the majority of the event.

EAGLE FARM REVIEW (SAT, APR 25)
A review of the meeting held at Eagle Farm on Saturday, April 25.
Race 1:
Class 6 Handicap - 1600m
1st - Plenty of Practise; 2nd - Fat Possum; 3rd - Hear Ye
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Frank Phillips: “She was ridden how I asked him (Brent Evans) to ride her. The jockey fought her a little bit too hard last time, but this boy let her slip at the right time and she responded better. It’s a real pleasing effort, because I always thought she might make it in town.”
Apprentice jockey Brent Evans: “Yeah, it was my first ride on the horse. I picked the ride up off Owen (Turpin), you know. He’s been crook of late ... pretty crook. He hasn’t been out of bed and that, so he couldn’t make it to the ride. I picked up the ride and it was a good enough to win. She felt great throughout. She was always going to be handy. I was originally going to lead, but one was going a bit quicker. We were going a nice tempo and I just decided to come back and sit off it. She relaxed under me well and I just waited until it was time to go.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Plenty Of Practise): 7.00 steady.
Favourite (Fourmula): 5.00 out to 6.50. Finished eighth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Our Heart (J. Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Gracesynd (App A. Taylor), Our Heart, Fourmula (J. Byrne) and Kyros (B. El-Issa) all over-raced in the early stages. More Than Regal (S. Seamer), which raced wide throughout, over-raced in the early and middle stages. Near the 800m Gracesynd improved up onto the heels of Kentish Rose (Matthew Palmer) and had to be steadied. Leaving the 350m More Than Regal and Kyros made contact. T. Treichel the rider of Nasadispute dropped his whip at the 200m.
B. El-Issa the rider of Kyros was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in after passing the finishing line resulting in Toro Rosso (A. Pattillo) being taken in onto Kentish Rose, which had to be steadied.
When questioned regarding the performance of Fourmula jockey J. Byrne stated that whilst on face value the horse's performance may have appeared disappointing, he felt that the slow tempo of the race in the middle stages was to the horse's detriment and added that in his opinion Fourmula had finished the race off reasonably well. A post race veterinary examination of Fourmula failed to reveal any abnormality.
Race 2:
2yo Handicap - 1000m
1st - Temple Of Boom; 2nd - Daneomite; 3rd - Bob And Dolly
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Tony Gollan: “Yeah, we put him out and we’ve been very patient with him to bring him back for the winter. We might have fallen a bit behind the eight-ball with him, with the weather and that, but he’s got a lot of improvement in him from today too. He probably got caught behind the wrong horse. We didn’t want to get caught behind the leader. The idea was to get him to settle. We rode him like that in a trial on Tuesday ... and then here again. If he is going to run on in 1200m and 1400m, he’s going to have to learn to settle. The main plan is the Sires. We’ll just see how we go through the winter with him. Like I said, he was a bit behind the eight-ball today leading into this run because of the weather. They moved trials around a bit. That’s why we had to trial Tuesday and race on Saturday. But he came through it well. That’s the way to ride him I think.”
Jockey Michael Cahill: “He had a good run, barrier one, just in behind the pace. We just needed a little luck getting clear, but once he did he was able to finish off. We planned to settle him in behind like that. He finished off well. He is a nice horse in the making.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Temple Of Boom): 3.00 out to 3.20.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Fields Of Plenty (A. Pattillo), Pioneer Way (R. Wiggins) and Southport (S. Scriven) were all slow to begin. Leaving the 900m Sniplaz (App L. Rolls) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Before The Storm (T. Treichel), which shifted in. Near the 600m Daneomite (L. Cassidy) had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room between Frisco Lights (J. Byrne) and Sniplaz, which shifted in. Daneomite and Sniplaz made contact leaving the 400m. Temple Of Boom (M. Cahill) was held up for clear running until a point leaving the 200m. Passing the 200m Daneomite shifted in taking the tiring Frisco Lights in onto Before The Storm.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Sniplaz App L. Rolls stated that the horse travelled well until a point rounding the home turn when he asked Sniplaz for an effort at which point the horse was immediately under pressure and failed to respond to his riding thereafter. App L. Rolls added that he felt the horse was somewhat reluctant to stretch out today. A veterinary examination of Sniplaz revealed the gelding to be mildly sore in both fore-legs. Trainer L. Birchley was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to Sniplaz racing again.
A post race veterinary examination of Pioneer Way revealed the filly to be lame in the off-fore leg. Trainer P. Sexton was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to Pioneer Way racing again.
Race 3:
Peter Gallagher Stakes Handicap (Quality) (Listed) - 2144m
1st - Go Cart; 2nd - Rabbuka; 3rd - Drumshanbo
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Steven O’dea: “Ryan (Wiggins) can’t do a thing wrong at the moment. Neither of us can. If he pulls up all right and I keep him in work there is a Group 2 race at Doomban in a couple of weeks. I think he’s had nine runs now (this prep), so ... but in saying that, he sort of keeps pulling up good after his races all the time. He is a pretty adaptable horse and he is very genuine, so I will just see how he does. He is on a race to race basis at the moment. We don’t have anything big in mind, just probably some of the lesser staying races over the Carnival. I think 2000m, 2100m is probably his limit.”
O’dea and Wiggins have been making merry lately. In fact O’dea has been on a roll since relocating to Brisbane from Townsville.
Steven O’dea: “I brought horses down at the start of January. I’ve been here permanently since the start of March. I’ve won three distance races already which has exceeded all expectations, for sure. In both town and provincial racing, I think we’ve won nine out of nineteen since moving here. So, yeah, it’s going really well.”
Jockey Ryan Wiggans: “Another nice win, mate. He did it well today. It probably didn’t suit him, the dry track today, but he stuck it out well. There was plenty of speed on and I just sat back off them, about fifth. There was plenty of speed, so I got a nice track up into the race. I was very happy where I was early. He carried a bit of weight today so I had to protect him a bit. I got into the race at the right time and he had a strong finish. I thought we had them covered early in the straight. He got to the front pretty quick, but he laboured bit in front. He’s probably ... like I said, he’s not the best on dry tracks compared to wet tracks, but he stayed on well with heavy weight today.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Go Cart): 4.00 steady.
Favourite (Rabbuka): 2.60 out to 2.80. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Drumshanbo (App Michael Palmer) raced ungenerously in the early stages.
Race 4:
2mw Handicap - 1400m
1st - Our Lukas; 2nd - Little Stranger; 3rd - Save A Buck
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Heathcote: “It pleases me a lot. Last preparation I purposefully kept him to the mile to save him for the Winter Carnival. I can win a really good staying race with this horse over 2000m. He’s done that first up. I have him a lot further forward this time than I’ve have ever had him. The last prep ... last prep I was learning him about him. But this time, no trials - just with jumps outs and that – I’ve got him well-advanced. Mate, wait till he gets to 2000m. I believe over 2200m, he is going to win a nice race. He can win an Ipswich Cup this horse. Yeah, it’s a big call for a horse, but the potential is there. He is by Generous. I brought him back last prep to save him for the Carnival and I really believe I’ve made the right decision. He’s shown it today to beat that lot over 1400 first-up. He’ll go to a mile and, like I say, he’ll only get better as he goes over further.”
Jockey Anthony Pattillo: “We jumped positive. I decided to be aggressive before I went out onto the track. It paid dividends. We got into a lovely spot, one out, one back ... travelling up good. I was pretty confident that the speed of the race would suit a forward running horse and we got such a nice run. Just peeled off them and sort of attacked after straightening and then he did a good job to hold on. He takes a lot of riding the horse. That was my first go on him. I’ve seen him a bit though. He felt good mate. All credit to Rob (Heathcote) and his staff, you know ... first-up over 1400m. He definitely feels like he has a few more wins in store for himself over the winter.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Our Lukas): 12.00 out to 14.00.
Favourite (Save A Buck): 5.00 in to 4.60. Finished third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Yass River (S. Scriven) and Charvicky (App A. Taylor) bumped on jumping away. Man Of Class (A. Merritt) was slow to begin. Yass River and Charvicky raced wide throughout the event. Felixtrinidad (J. Bowditch) had a tendency to lay out when placed under pressure in the straight. Leaving the 100m Sir Kingsford (D. Craven) improved up onto the heels of the tiring Yass River and was obliged to alter course.
Race 5:
2mw Handicap - 1000m
1st - She's In The Guide; 2nd - Pride Of Power; 3rd - Ben Hur
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin: “She’s had a few problems, mate. She pulled up lame last start she had.” (That was more than four months ago, on December 6). “She pulled up quite lame. It actually appeared that she might have done something to her spine. She couldn’t walk home from the races. I gave her pain-killers and all, but she still couldn’t walk home. We had to bring the float in onto the racetrack after everyone had gone. We put her in the float and we had to drive her right to her stable door to get her off. We don’t know what happened to her, whether she pinched a nerve or whatever. We never did find out. But she has a long spell and she’s had a lot of treatment. Yeah, and thank heavens, she’s come back and won that one. We will just take it race by race. Mate, she is a very fast mare and if you stick around the 1000m ... well, she’s never run a bad race over 1000m. We’ll have a go at a Fillies And Mares race now and see how it goes.”
Jockey Larry Cassidy “Instead of beating them out, she jumped with them ... she began on terms with them. I’ve never ridden her before, but they just said, she’s a free runner. Don’t try to restrain her. Let her just roll under her own steam. I was able to cross without doing too much work, even though we we’re running along. And, gee she dug deep. When they came at me at the 300m, I thought they had me to be honest. I thought they were going to run over the top of me. With regard to her back problem, I’d say she’s probably alright, but just see how she pulls up. Time will probably tell. It was a pretty impressive win really.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Near the 600m Seething Duck (A. Spinks), when steadying from the heels of Daunting Lad (App L. Rolls), shifted out tightening the running of Sectagonal (J. Byrne). Leaving the 600m Junk In The Trunk (S. Seamer) and Seething Duck made contact. Approaching the 400m Caprizzi Strip (App Michael Palmer), which had a tendency to hang out, shifted out making contact with Junk In The Trunk. Near the 300m Seething Duck shifted out and away from Mitanni (App B. Evans) and in doing so made contact with Sectagonal. A short distance later Seething Duck had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Mitanni, which shifted out to improve. App B. Evans the rider of Mitanni was reprimanded. Sectagonal lost an off-fore plate in running.
Race 6:
3yo Queensland Day Plate (Listed) - 1400m
1st - Bold Glance; 2nd - Za Magic; 3rd - Plain Magic
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Norm Hilton (who had his left arm in a sling after breaking it on Tuesday) : “Ah, yeah ... I fell off a horse. The horse actually stepped on my arm. That is what broke it. Not this horse. He wouldn’t do that to me. I fell off when I was riding work. I ride most of my own horses. I’ve got about twenty horses there at the moment. Probably racing about eight myself. The rest are pre-trainers. I do pre-trainers and breakers, but I’m gradually working more into the training side of it.
“We bought him at the Magic Millions sale back before EI. When the EI hit we thought, ah we won’t get the money we think he is worth, so we decided to keep him. We sold a share to Bill and Trudy (Walsh) and we went from there. Yeah, it’s been a bit of a long-winded programme, but it’s paid off. We’ll look at that Doomben Classic Mile for three-year-olds now. That’s in two weeks time.
“He is a lovely horse to look after. He’s just the best natured horse. He’s a pet at home. Kristy (banks) rides some work for me and we put her on when we can. This is my first winner in town – and it‘s a Listed. race. So it is a first win in town and first Listed race all in one.”
Jockey Kristy Banks: “I’ve had a lot to do with Norm (Hilton) my whole life, but I really haven’t had that many rides for him. Tracy, his wife, just rung me up on Monday and said do I want to ride him, and I said, yeah, I’d love too. I drew the fourteen alley, so I elected to go forward. One went out to the lead, so we just sat off him. We got a really beautiful run and I just sort of cuddled him around the turn and he did the rest.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Bold Glance): 21.00 out to 26.00.
Favourite (Ashlee’s Jewel): 4.00 steady. Finished fifth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Athenas Gift (S. Scriven) was slow to begin. Resume (S. Seamer) was tightened for room on jumping away between Rockdale (L. Cassidy) and Notevenow (J. Bowditch), which shifted out. Mystical Knight (T. Treichel) jumped away awkwardly. Hyde Park (A. Pattillo) jumped away very awkwardly and lost ground. Athenas Gift raced wide in the early and middle stages of the event. Leaving the 200m Athenas Gift, Resume and Notevenow all had to be checked to varying degrees when tightened for room by Lucky Omens (M. Cahill), which had initially been taken in by Ashlee’s Jewel (App A. Taylor) and Side To Side (P. Wolfgram), which shifted out and away from Sinful Warrior (B. El-Issa), which was attempting to obtain clear running to the outside of Plain Magic (C. Reith). A short distance later Side To Side had to be steadied when tightened for room between Rockdale and Sinful Warrior, which was taken out by Plain Magic. At a subsequent inquiry App A. Taylor, M. Cahill and C. Reith were all reprimanded for failing to take sufficient measures to ensure their mounts remained on a straight course. Rockdale and Our Nautique (J. Byrne) raced wide throughout.
A post race veterinary examination of Notevenow revealed the colt to be slightly lame in the off-fore leg. Trainer B. Guy will be advised that Notevenow will require a veterinary certificate of fitness before being permitted to race again.
Race 7:
Sir Byrne Hart Stakes (WFA) (Group 2) - 1200m
1st - Swiss Ace; 2nd - Sniper's Bullet; 3rd - Red Element
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Mick Mair: “It’s good to get the first one out the road. We will see what we can do, if we can keep finding dry tracks. That is going to be the hard thing. He needs a bit of pressure put on him to make him to do his best. If something goes with him he always chases better, I don’t know why. He always just does enough. He was never going to run away from them. There’s a bit of improvement there. Just with a bit of pressure on him you’ll see him improve, but I was happy with the win today. We’ll go to the BTC Cup now and then the 10 000.”
Jockey Ken Pope: “He jumped, got over pretty easy and dropped the bridle for me. He then just travelled a little hard on the bridle because we were going so slow. He probably isn’t used to going that slow. He coasted down the run. Just the way he cantered. He can reel off the sectionals a lot quicker than that, but, with other races in mind, I was happy enough to just slow them up as much as I could. He’s a professional race horse. He dropped the bit when he straightened up. He was waiting for me to tell him when to go. I sort of didn’t worry too much about it until about halfway up the straight. They were sort of struggling to get to him and I thought, well if anything comes from behind then, I will give him a smack. So I gave him a back-hander. He put a couple on them and then he just sort of drops the bridle again, you know. He only does enough. He does what you tell him to do. That is the best part about this horse, you know. He can fight like a tiger when he has to, but he obviously looks after himself.”
Pope was riding under some sufferance, after taking a bit of a battering in a fall earlier in the week.
Ken Pope: “My legs alright. I sprained my ankle. I received deep tissue damage in my shoulder and I corked my thigh ... all on the right side. I’m getting physio on the lot. It’s not too bad. They are going to have an enquiry about the fall – and so they should.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Swiss Ace): 1.60 in to 1.50.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Red Element (L. Cassidy) was tightened for room on jumping away between Sniper’s Bullet (M. Cahill) and Teranaba (M. Bell), both of which shifted ground. Black Ink (S. Scriven) was held up for clear running in early stages of the straight. Sniper’s Bullet laid in when placed under pressure in the straight and near the 200m shifted in making contact with Red Element (L. Cassidy). A post race veterinary examination of Black Ink revealed the gelding to be lame in the near-fore leg. Trainer L. Kelly was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness would be required prior to Black Ink racing again.
Race 8:
Class 6 Plate - 1200m
1st - Hodges Street; 2nd - Eire Of Magic; 3rd - Agnes Dream
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Barry Baldwin (who completed a double on the day): “He had the good barrier today (the number one draw) so he didn’t have to do any extra work, you know. He was feeling it a little bit at the end, but speed horses can get away with that can’t they. They can get the job done early.”
Apprentice jockey Amy Taylor: “Barry (Baldwin) just said, don’t hunt him out of the gates. Just let him kind of come out and get his breathing right. He just led very easy like he did last time. Just had the same plan as when I won on him two runs ago. The ground is a bit choppy. It didn’t really suit him. He did tire a bit, because it was five weeks between runs. You can’t really hit him with the stick either, so I just waited for the last bit before I even got to him. I got suspended on Wednesday so this is my last ride for about a week-and-a-half, so it was good to get a win.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Hodges Street): 5.50 steady.
Favourite (Attackum): 3.50 steady. Finished eighth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Unintentional (C. Reith) and Ima Joker (P. Wolfgram) were tightened for room on jumping away between Eire Of Magic (App L. Rolls) and Attackum (L. Cassidy) both of which shifted in. App L. Rolls the rider of Eire Of Magic was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in at a point near the 1000m when not sufficiently clear of Costa Complete (Matthew Palmer), resulting in that horse having to be checked when tightened for room between Eire Of Magic and Momentously (A. Pattillo). App L. Rolls' licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence midnight 26 April 2009 and to expire midnight 8 May 2009.
When questioned regarding his riding of Malambo over the final 500m J. Byrne stated that he placed the horse under pressure approaching the home turn and the horse immediately showed a tendency to hang in. J. Byrne added that he then endeavoured to secure clear running closer to the fence however, was unable to place Malambo under full pressure due to the horse's continued tendency to lay in. J. Byrne further added that he was unable to secure clear running over the concluding stages and Malambo went to the line without being fully tested. J. Byrne's explanation was noted.
Eire Of Magic was inclined to shift in under pressure over the concluding stages. Agnes Dream (App Michael Palmer), Slick Sniper (B. Hull) and Leondari On Ice (B. Payne) all raced wide throughout the event.

IPSWICH REVIEW (FRI, APR 24)
A review of the meeting at Ipswich on Friday, April 24.
Race 1:
Class 3 Plate - 2150m
1st - Incendio; 2nd - Twinkling Star; 3rd - Don't Back Down
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Heathcote: “The nice thing about it is he is learning so well. He has only had five starts before this. First-up, he knew nothing. Second run still learning. Third run, stepped up in distance and put in a cracker, just a short-neck away from winning. Fourth start, he won. Fifth start up in distance again – a good second. Here, another win. The beauty of it this is all still in his first preparation. It’s all been then kind of progressive improvement you are looking for. If he couldn’t win here today, he probably would have gone to the paddock. Now, we might have to consider something like the Grand Prix during the Carnival. I’m not saying he is that class of horse yet, but I won the Grand Prix last year with a horse called Bell Academy, and do you know this one is doing exactly the same thing as he did.”
Jockey Larry Cassidy: “He is a nice staying sort of horse. He hadn’t had a run for a month, so that was a good effort. He improving steadily and was due for this win.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Semi Final (B. Evans) began awkwardly. Twinkling Star (K. Yoshida) was slow to begin. Near the 2000m, Scent of Love (C. Whiteley) shifted out and made contact with Semi Final (B. Evans), which also shifted out, making contact with National Soldier (B. El-Issa). In this incident, Semi Final was buffeted and became unbalanced for several strides. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, Semi Final got its head up and had to be eased from the heels of National Soldier when the pace slowed. Semi Final then raced wide for the remainder of the race. National Soldier raced wide until passing the 1200m. Passing the 1100m, Cinquacasino (J. Piper) improved to the inside of the heels of National Soldier and was eased. Scent of Love, which was following, had to be steadied. Twinkling Star (K. Yoshida) over-raced in the early stages and raced wide from the 800m. Rounding the home turn, Incendio (L. Cassidy) improved on to the heels of Semi Final (B. Evans) and had to be checked.
A post race veterinary examination of Scent of Love revealed the mare to be lame in the off-fore leg. Connections of Scent of Love were advised that a veterinary clearance will be required for Scent of Love prior to its next race start.
Race 2:
2yo QTIS Maiden Plate - 1200m
1st - Femina Fashion; 2nd - Chilli Mud Crab; 3rd - Irish Dream
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Trevor Whittington (after saddling a 60-1 winner): “This is a filly that I’ve got a lot of time for, that’s why I took her to town first-up (last Saturday). She did everything wrong ... just very new. She’d missed trials and that because of the wet weather and everything so, in the end, we said we might as well go and educate her, you know ... and she just pulled up so well. I normally wouldn’t back a two-year-old up that quick, but it just thrived up there after the run so there was no reason not to start here – apart from the alley – but I thought if she draws badly again next week at Doomben, that would be worse. So we’re here. She is a filly with a lot of promise. I told Ronnie (Goltz) to jump and go forward and to, hopefully, just slot in. She got a beautiful run and she just kicked away in the finish.
Jockey Ron Goltz: “Last Saturday the horse had a bad barrier a got caught real wide and had a tough run, particularly as it was his debut. Today we had a bad barrier again ... drawn wide, but he got a good run. Got up to fourth, one off the fence and travelled real nice. He’s still green ... still learning. He ran super today.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Trombone Alley, which proved difficult to load and then broke through the barriers and galloped for some distance, was withdrawn by stewards on veterinary advice at 12.49 pm. Trainer Mr P. Duff was advised that Trombone Alley must trial to the stewards satisfaction prior to its next race start. Havta Do (D. Coleman) began awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with Powerful Sphere (D. Griffin). Whisky River (M. Palmer) and Merry Moni (L. Cassidy) were slow to begin. Approaching the 1000m, Havta Do commenced to over-race for a short distance. Near the 800m, Irish Dream (B. Stewart) improved up on to the heels of Havta Do and had to be steadied. Irish Dream then over-raced for some distance thereafter. Leaving the 500m, Irish Dream (B. Stewart) became awkward when racing to the inside of the heels of Havta Do. Rounding the home turn, Been Naughty (B. Evans) was unable to gain clear running. After passing the 400m, Run Jake Run (S. Drake) was held up on the heels of Ella Daniela (T. Treichel), which began to weaken at that point. Leaving the 200m, Been Naughty was disappointed for a run to the inside of Ella Daniela (T. Treichel) and had to be steadied. Stewards questioned jockey T. Treichel regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Ella Daniela. T. Treichel stated that whilst the horse had worked hard early, it travelled well in the middle section of the race, however when placed under pressure in the straight, Ella Daniela failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion proved disappointing. Stewards noted the explanation. Been Naughty returned to scale with blood in its mouth as a result of a small laceration.
Race 3:
2yo QTIS Maiden Plate Div 2 - 1200m
1st - Catallion; 2nd - Huckleberry Dane; 3rd - Crystal Honour
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Trevor Bailey: “Most of my horses race up on the speed. That’s where I like to put them. Look, he didn’t have a lot of luck in his first start (when finishing second and failing to get the result on protest), but he was probably a little bit new too. We used that more as a trial than we did as a race, because we were just desperate with the wet tracks and that. Where we go with him after today, I just don’t know yet. Whether we put him aside now, or give him one more run then put him out. I still have to decide about that.”
Jockey Terry Treichel: “He protested first-up, but the objection wasn’t successful. I didn’t ride him. I was suspended at the time. Today he’s had a hard run. He’s come from gate nine and had to work a bit early. He then settled nicely. When the pressure came at the top of the straight, he went past Scriven’s horse (Huckleberry Dane) pretty easy. Once I got past him, he sort of wanted to run around a little bit. It’s only his second start so that’s understandable. He’s going to improve out of sight on that. You’ve yet to see the best of him.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
April Folly was declared a late scratching at 12.18 pm on veterinary advice. Trainer G. Livermore was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for the filly prior to its next race start. Summer Miss (A. Pattillo) began awkwardly, losing ground. Fantastic Four (C. Whiteley) and Tolawha’s Pride (T. Pannell) made contact on jumping away. Shortly after the start, Cousine Island (Matthew Palmer) shifted in and made contact with Rainy Knight (C. Dixon). Approaching the 1000m, Carry Me Baby (B. Evans) commenced to over-race for a short distance. Carry Me Baby then commenced to hang out, forcing Warrego (M. Radecker) wider on the track. Trainer B. Baldwin was advised that a warning was being placed on Carry Me Baby as a result of its racing manners. Nearing the 800m, Fantastic Four (C. Whiteley) was placed in restricted room between Summer Miss (A. Pattillo) and Carry Me Baby, which shifted in marginally. Warrego raced wide throughout.
Race 4:
3yo & Up F&M Maiden Handicap - 1350m
1st - Quingilly; 2nd - Ceethesunrise; 3rd - Jugerston
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Trevor Bailey (who completed a race-to race double on the day): “She’s been unlucky in a number of starts. Over the three runs or four runs she has had, she’s been unlucky. She’s done most things right, but just little things have taken some time for her to learn ... learn how to race. Today she’s had everything go her way and she’s won. You can’t ask for more.”
Jockey Terry Treichel (who completed a race-to race double on the day): “She went nice. I had to do a fair bit of work early. She been a bit slow out of the gates of late, not showing much speed, so I had to use her a bit early ... but I travelled nice. Oh, she was just too good for them mate at the finish. It was a good run last start. All four starts have been pretty good. She’s just been knocking at the door. She just needed a bit of luck. She deserved the win.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Stalwart Twist, which was kicked behind the barriers, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. Quingilly (T. Treichel) and Urased a Star (D. Coleman) made contact on jumping away. Ecclesia (J. Murphy) began awkwardly and shifted in, bumping Zulu Queen. Italian Empress (R. Wiggins) was tightened for room at the start between Jugerston (G. Geran) and Arhay (D. Green), which shifted out. The Pocket Rocket (A. Erhart) began awkwardly. Cogitate Baby (K. Purdy), which began awkwardly, shifted out, making contact with Tickle Me Quick (M. Hellyer). Approaching the 1000m, Ecclesia (J. Murphy) commenced to over-race, and leaving the 900m, improved on to the heels of Ceethesunrise (A. Pattillo) and had to be steadied. Approaching the 400m, Tickle Me Quick had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room to the inside of Lilly Lilo (B. Stewart), which shifted in and away from Quality Appeal (M. Radecker). Arhay (D. Green) commenced to hang out leaving the 400m and did so until straightening. Leaving the 200m, Ceethesunrise had a tendency to lay in under pressure. At the same stage, Zulu Queen commenced to hang in under pressure. Near the 150m, Shrewd Hostess (D. Craven) shifted out, making contact with Jurgerston. Zulu Queen and Arhay (D. Green) raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Stalwart Twist failed to reveal any abnormalities.

WINNER’S FEEDBACK:
Trainer Rod Hilton: “Larry (Cassidy) was on him two runs back. That was a reasonable run. It was his first run this way of going and he was a little bit lost. That was his first run for me. I leased him from his owner down south. I actually had him in at Eagle Farm or Doomben about a week-and-a-half after that in a 2000m race, but the tracks were too wet. So I scratched him and went to the Sunshine Coast, but he just had a bit of bad luck there. He got caught in front and he just didn’t settle. He had the draw to overcome today. I just left that to Larry. You don’t give riders like that instructions, especially one like him. It suited him the outside draw actually, because he doesn’t like being crowded. He is going to be a handy horse, I think.”
Jockey Larry Cassidy: “They went very hard early and I covered a lot of ground (from a wide barrier). It was a really good effort to get the win.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
All Lines Up (G. Geran) jumped away awkwardly, losing ground. Raging Rastus (S. Bogenhuber) was tightened for room at the start between A Little Danger (L. Cassidy) and Orhtac (M. Hellyer), both of which shifted ground. The Snicster (J. Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly, making contact with the starting gate. Red Or Black (R. Goltz) and Mr Daybreak (T. Treichel) made contact shortly after the start. Smuggler’s Inn (N. Yamada) raced wide in the early stages. All Lined Up (G. Geran) was held up for clear running from shortly after straightening until leaving the 300m. Approaching the 200m, Our Gold Minto (S. Apthorpe) improved into a run where there was doubtful room. At the same stage, Smuggler’s Inn (N. Yamada) shifted in under pressure, momentarily tightened the running of Our Gold Minto, resulting in that runner being taken across the heels of The Snicster and having to be further steadied. N. Yamada, rider of Smuggler’s Inn, was severely reprimanded and advised to stop riding and straighten his mounts when they show a tendency to shift ground. Ocean Outlaw (N. Evans) had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the straight. A Little Danger raced wide for the majority of the event. Stewards questioned jockey R.Goltz regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Red or Black. R.Goltz stated that the gelding had travelled well in the early and middle stages of the race, however when he obtained clear running in the straight, Red Or Black failed to run on and in his opinion was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of Red or Black failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Dive Bomber lost its off-fore plate in running.
Race 6:
Maiden Plate - 800m
1st - Inpenetrable; 2nd - Go Your Own Way; 3rd - Grace The Wind
WINNER’S FEEDBACK:
Impenetrable, under a powerful ride by Gary Geran, took the race by the scruff of the neck with his strong front-running tactics. He proceeded to put his rivals on the back foot, to the extent that the result seemed to be safely within is keeping halfway up the straight. In the end though, Impenetrable needed every inch of that lead to see off the flying finish of Go Your Own Way, who arrived with a late flourish to get within half-a-length of the winner at the line.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
On return to scale, the connections of Our Lexas Lad made application for the horse to be declared a non runner on the basis that the gelding was denied a fair start. After taking evidence from jockey S.Scriven, the club's starter, and viewing the patrol film, stewards were of the opinion that Our Lexas Lad’s barrier gates failed to open as the start was effected resulting in the horse having to break through the gates, placing that gelding at a significant disadvantage. Stewards deemed that the horse had been denied a fair start and was subsequently declared a non runner. Go Your Own Way (S. Bogenhuber) began awkwardly and lost ground. Maiden Iglesia (C. Dixon) and No Kobe No (D. Coleman) were slow to begin. Shortly after the start, Prussian Necklace (B. Stewart) attempted to buck for a short distance. Trainer W. King was advised that the mare would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. Approaching the 600m, Grace The Wind (T. Pannell) had to be steadied when racing between Pegunny Red (D. Griffin) and Maizville (W. Clasohm) when both horses shifted ground. Go Your Own Way commenced to shift out under pressure leaving the 200m, and a short distance later when being struck with the whip shifted out abruptly, resulting in its rider having to stop riding and straighten.
Race 7:
Class 1 Handicap - 800m
1st - Navillus Qualo; 2nd - Mary's Image; 3rd - Eagle Jester
WINNER’S FEEDBACK:
Trainer Andrew Donnelly: “I’ve only had him for his last three starts. He won first-up for me at Dalby and then we went straight to town. Probably if we got a dry track in town we would have finished a bit closer, but it was a little bit too wet. He didn’t handle it well. When you go strong you got to follow up, you know. He looked to be a good chance. You run to the corner here and it’s only one turn. He had the pace and the finish, although Leeann (McCoy) said he half-spat it when he got trot the front by himself ... which he does. He doesn’t exert himself which is probably why he goes like he does.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
On return to scale a protest was lodged by A. Best, rider of the 5th placegetter, Actions, against Eagle Jester being declared 3rd, alleging interference near the 500m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned, stewards were of the view that Actions had sustained interference at the 500m as a result of Mary’s Magique being taken in by Eagle Jester, which had a tendency to hang in at that point. Stewards could not be satisfied that the ground lost in this incident warranted a reversal of placings, and subsequently declared correct weight on semaphored numbers. At a subsequent inquiry, stewards could not attribute blame for the incident to any one rider, however advised the connections of Eagle Jester that a warning was being placed on the gelding's racing manners. Covet Gold and Easy Silence, which were following, were both inconvenienced in this incident. Mister Gamma (N. Yamada) and Petalan (C. Dixon) were slow to begin. Bis Vincere (J. Murphy) began awkwardly. Youcantseeme (C. Reith) knuckled on jumping away, resulting in its rider becoming unbalanced and the gelding shifted in, making contact with Wireless (K. Forrester). Eagle Jester had a tendency to lay in under pressure from the 200m until the winning post. Petalan (C. Dixon) and Barbintary Eye (W. Clasohm) raced wide throughout.
Race 8:
Class 1 Handicap - 1200m
1st - Monashee Warrior; 2nd - Kisani; 3rd - Conchenka
WINNER’S FEEDBACK:
Trainer Steven O’dea: “A few times he’s found a little trouble before. He is a big horse and he needs a little bit of room ... he’s sort of been caught up between horses before and found some trouble. So, being drawn out wide here wasn’t the worst thing for him. At least he had a bit of room to run his race.”
Jockey Ryan Wiggins: “The horse hadn’t raced for thirteen months, but he has been in work for five months. So, he’s had a little bit of injury here and there, but he is a very nice horse, You know, he can win in town on a Saturday. To win like he did after such a long break ... he’s done very well.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Live and Loud (M. Speers) and Double Risk (K. Banks) were both slow to begin. Lightway (D. Griffin) shifted out and made contact with Offshore Trader (L. Cassidy) at the start. Near the 900m, Conchenka (W. Clasohm), which commenced to over-race, had to be steadied from the heels of Eagle Jester. Approaching the 700m, Lightway (D. Griffin), which commenced to over-race, was forced wider on the track by Live and Loud (M. Speers) and in doing so had to be steadied from the heels of Offshore Trade (L. Cassidy) and shifted out. Dorado Beach (J. Bowditch), which was following, had to be steadied away from the heels of Lightway (D. Griffin). Approaching the 600m, Tomiruf (L. Rolls) improved onto the heels of Hootson (K. Yoshida) and had to be steadied. Apprentice M. Speers, rider of Live and Loud, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 500m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Craiglea Relic (B. Evans), resulting in that runner having to be checked and lose its rightful running. M. Speers was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 26 April and to expire at midnight, 6 May 2009. Near the 300m, Conchenka shifted marginally out under pressure, resulting in Offshore Trader shifting outwards. Hooston, which was following, shifted out abruptly and in doing so inconvenienced Lightway. Offshore Trader, Kisani (T. Treichel) and Double Rise raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination of Offshore Trader revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils. As this was the second occasion on which Offshore Trader has bled, the horse will incur a lifetime ban from racing. A swab sample was taken from Offshore Trader.
Race 9:
Class 2 Handicap - 1350m
1st - Alioop; 2nd - Qwerty; 3rd - Secret Request
WINNER’S FEEDBACK:
Trainer Robert Heathcote (who completed a double on the day): “He’s actually promised to be a pretty decent horse. In his last run, for no apparent reason, he ran below expectations ... but he still only got beat by three lengths. He wasn’t on form that day. We couldn’t put the run down to anything. Since then, what’s it been ... nearly a month, in fact over a month ... he hasn’t run because of the spate of wet tracks, cancelled race meetings, transferred race meetings. So, we’ve had to hold him back. It was a good effort again, like that stayer in the first race (Incendio). He hasn’t run for a month. He’s gone to 1350m ... and he has really toughed it out. He is a three-year-old with some promise. You know, whether he goes on this preparation or next year, he is showing potential. I like horses that haven’t run for a month and they can still hit the line like that. And Cassidy, of course. Good ride.”
Jockey Larry Cassidy (who completed a treble on the day): “He is a nice, big horse, but he chops and changes legs a lot through the run. He sort of moves around underneath you and then when you give him a push he loses his legs a bit. Today, when I bounced and got was, I thought, well I’m just going to nurse him, nurse him ... and not try to force him to get going, but he still sort of lost his action in a couple of places. I think that is just a little temporary weakness. I think in about six months time he is going to be a fair horse. I think he is a little bit weak at the moment. Time should fix that.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Kaycee’s Bid (S. Bogenhuber) was tightened for room at the start between Regal Reason (J. Murphy) and Facebook (D. Craven), both of which shifted ground. Channel Crossing was tightened for room at the start between Esquivar (A. Spinks) and Danger Line (S. Apthorpe), when both horses shifted ground. Beautiful Moon (M. Palmer) began awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with Loader Tycoon (K. Purdy). Near the 800m, Kaycee’s Bid improved onto the heels of Facebook and was steadied. Loaded Tycoon and Secret Request raced wide from the 600m. Beautiful Moon and Alioop (L. Cassidy) bumped near the 300m. Alioop had a tendency to shift in under pressure and near the 200m and made contact with Mister Maverick (K. Yoshida). Swords (S. Scriven) and Beautiful Moon raced wide for the majority of the event. A post race veterinary examination of Swords failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

DOOMBEN REVIEW (WED, APR 22)
A review of the meeting held at Doomben on Wednesday, April 22.
Track - Dead 4. Rail - out 9.5m
Race 1:
3yo & Up Maiden Plate - 1650m
1st - Handy Hints; 2nd - Levi's Bid; 3rd - Lodging
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Stuart Bannan: “He is going well this prep. He’s been building up steadily. He is bred to stay, believe it or not, even though he is by Easy Rocking. So I’ve trained him like that, as opposed to training him like a sprinter in his first prep ... and we are reaping the rewards. I believe there is still some improvement in the horse. We wanted him off the pace. We didn’t think there was much pace in the race ... like last time he raced, they walked and that was his undoing, you know. He couldn’t pick them up. Today he got handy and it didn’t matter what the pace was. This is my first city winner. I’m very happy.”
Jockey Todd Pannell: “He was a little bit closer than I thought he would be. He was the first one out of the gates today. He showed a little bit of speed ... more than usual. I was quite happy to use the speed that he showed in the first hundred yards, but it went even better when they put a bit of speed on when we went around the first corner and I was able to get a nice trail into the run. He was travelling really good ... did nothing wrong. He got an uninterrupted run and just cruised up to them. About at the 500m, he was really just cruising along. I had them covered on the corner, mate, he was going that well.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Handy Hints): 3.20 out to 3.80.
Favourite (Lodging): 3.00 in to 2.00 out to 2.15. Finished third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Cotham (A. Pattillo) was tightened for room on jumping away between Locheil Lad (S. Bogenhuber) and Flawless (J. Byrne), which jumped away awkwardly and shifted in. When the pace slowed approaching the 1100m, Locheil Lad shifted out, making contact with Cotham. My Space cast its near-fore plate near the 800m. J. Byrne, rider of the 5th placegetter, Flawless, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right to the finish line.
Race 2:
3yo & Up F&M Maiden Handicap - 1200m
1st - Saint Minerva; 2nd - Owners Rule; 3rd - La Tomatina
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Alan Bailey: “She was always going to win like that. She is a very good filly. I said to Dan (Griffin), don’t worry about the draw. Just let her get back. She should have won here before when she ran into a lot of trouble and run third. She ran into all the touble in the world and couldn’t get a go at them. Then she had another run and we gave her a break. She’s been good. She’s come back a stronger horse. She is a very good filly. She’s been working with the likes of Tears’N’Cheers and Agnes Dream. I’ll aim her for the Oaks if we can get in. She’s good enough for that.”
Jockey Dan Griffin: “Alan (Bailey) just said I should ride her where she lands. If she began good, ride her forward. If not, ride her from where she is. She relaxed nice. She is a filly that is going to want to get over ground, so I didn’t want to bustle her. So I just left her where she was, nice and relaxed. She has got a quick turn of foot and she just quickened beautifully in the straight. She did want to run in a bit. She is still a little bit immature. She’ll come out of that. The day I rode her when she finished third (in the middle run of her first prep), she was inclined to run around a little bit. She’s just got that one little habit to get over now. They are going to have a lot of fun with her.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Saint Minerva): 6.00 out to 7.00 in to 6.00.
Favourite (Seqsational): 6.00 in to 4.00 out to 4.20. Finished fourth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Uberwald (B. El-Issa) jumped away awkwardly and missed the start. Moonlight Zephyr and Over The Page (L. Rolls) both jumped away awkwardly and made contact. Uberwald (B. El-Issa) over-raced rounding the first turn. Leaving the 800m, La Tomatina (B. Evans) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Seqsational (B. Stewart), which shifted in. Desire To Win (M. Hellyer) and Over The Page (L. Rolls) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 3:
3yo & Up CG&E Maiden Handicap - 1200m
1st - Surrounded By Sin; 2nd - Mr Nappy; 3rd - Colin's Choice
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley: “He’s been knocking at the door, obviously. We took the blinkers off. He just revved up a bit last time. He just got a little bit off balance at the top of the straight when looking for a run, so he took a bit longer to haul them in than I thought, but he got there in the end. He was strong at the line. That’s what you want. We’ve got no Carnival plans with him. We just going to let him go through the classes. He’s not a bad buy at all. We got him at a Magic Millions sale for $10 000.”
Apprentice jockey Brent Evans: “We really didn’t want to get that far back early, you know. Three back on the inside and I thought, what are we going to do here. But, I mean, he’s just popped off himself and went up outside the leader and I was just laughing the whole way from there. He had a tight run at the top of the straight, but it was granted. He only had one to run down from there and he did it well. Hit the line real good.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Surrounded By Sin): 1.80 out to 2.00.
The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Surrounded By Sin (B. Evans) and Tradies Hope (S. Drake) were tightened for room on jumping away between Coopers Comet (Michael Palmer), which jumped away awkwardly and shifted outwards, and Zaman (L. Cheshire), which jumped inwards. Cocorvada (J. Morris) and Little Shrewdie (Matthew Palmer) were both slow to begin. T. Treichel, rider of Colins Choice, was severely reprimanded for failing to take sufficient measures to straighten his mount shortly after the start, causing Lander (S. Scriven) to be inconvenienced and taken in on to Bootooloo (B. Stewart), which had to be checked to avoid the heels of Ruling Party (R. Goltz), which was racing to the inside. Tradies Hope (S. Drake), which was inclined to pull hard near the 800m, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Bootooloo (B. Stewart), which shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination of Tradies Hope revealed the gelding had been galloped on and sustained an abrasion to the off-hind leg.
Race 4:
3yo Class 3 Handicap - 1200m
1st – Bretonneux; 2nd – Mazuka; 3rd - Gorm The Old
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Brian Wakefield: “Took the shortest way home. He got the breaks today, of course. He is one of those horses ... you know, he goes to sleep ... wherever you put him he’ll be happy. I noticed Scott (Seamer) had to give him a little stoke about 700m out. He was just starting to relax too much. As soon as he gives him a little push then he is straight back on the bridle again. There is still improvement in the horse, I think. He has had over a month off in-between runs, you know, so that’s a fair effort. As I said last time, he has had a good solid education and a good foundation, so hopefully he can reward everyone’s patience. The Guineas is our ultimate target with him, but we have to take care of the steps along the way and try to do enough to get into the race. We’ll be looking for a Saturday run for him now. He was entered for Saturday, but I just thought we’d take small steps at this stage. I’ve been that bloody toey about getting a good track. We got one, so we took it. Also there was probably a question mark with the 1400m on Saturday. With the month between runs it might just have been a bit too much for him. So we came here instead.”
Jockey Scott Seamer: “I did have to give him a reminder, because he relaxes so well. The run came and he was able to take it. He finishes his races off. A lot of the time you get the run but the horse is not able to take it. He’s an up-and-coming horse. When the run presents itself he can take it. He’s got a future.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Bretonneux): 4.20 out to 5.00 in to 4.80.
Favourite (Mazuka): 2.10 out to 3.50. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Frozone (C. Whiteley) and Don’tstop Believin (B. El-Issa) were slow to begin. Zahite (K. Yoshida) was inclined to pull hard at the heels of Multire Music (B. Evans) approaching the first turn. Near the 300m, Zahite (K. Yoshida) shifted out to improve and made contact with Beyond The Limit (C. Reith).
Stewards questioned C. Whiteley as to his riding tactics on Frozone, particularly in the straight. C. Whiteley stated that on entering the straight he attempted to position the horse into a run between Don’tstop Believin (B. El-Issa) and Nikki Beach (D. Craven), however at the 300m was unable to proceed due to both horses shifting ground and he was then obliged to alter course to the inside. He added that over the latter stages of the race when clear Frozone finished the race off well despite being inclined to hang in. The explanation was noted.
Race 5:
F&M Class 3 Div 1 Handicap - 1110m
1st - Sherann; 2nd - Miss Maggie; 3rd - Celestafy
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Les Kelly: “She took no prisoners there. She is that good. We had to run her to get into the Silk Stocking (at the Gold Coast on May2). In her first run she spread her legs at the start and hurt a muscle in her shoulder. So that explains that poor performance. We gave her some time out after that run. Then she came back and won first-up at the Coast. She won pretty much the same way she did today. The difference was that when she won at the Coast, she didn’t really handle the heavy going down there. With the better going, we were a bit more confident today, but nobody else was. She is out of that good dam Elite Warrior. Elite Warrior is the dam of Borsha’s Warrior and Borsha’s Mark ... and now this one. She’s only had the three to race. This filly will go to the Silk Stocking now.”
Jockey Bobby El-Issa: “She is a good filly. She is going places. First - the Silk Stocking!”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Sherann): 13.00 out to 14.00.
Favourite (Acquired): 2.80 out to 3.50. Finished sixth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As L Cassidy was to be overweight stewards permitted B El-Issa as the replacement rider for Sherann. L Cassidy was fined the sum of $100 under AR120(b). Mona Star (J. Byrne) was inclined to lay out in the middle stages of the event. Near the 600m, Arctic Echo (A. Taylor), which was inclined to lay out, made contact with Miss Maggie (M. Radecker), which had a tendency to shift in. Mona Star was inclined to hang out in the middle stages.
Apprentice A. Taylor, rider of Arctic Echo, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 250m she permitted her mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Canadian Poppy (R. Goltz), which resulted in Canadian Poppy having to be checked. A. Taylor was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 25 April and to expire at midnight, 6 May 2009.
A warning was issued to the connections of Miss Courtly, which appeared to attempt to savage Celestafy near the 650m.
Race 6:
F&M Class 3 Div 2 Handicap - 1110m
1st - Martha's Vineyard; 2nd - Falvalea; 3rd - Cicarelli/Brookie Babe
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Murphy: “That’s the way she has got to go. She has to go forward and try to dictate things. He rides her a treat that bloke. Bobby (El-Issa) rides her really good, you know. He suits that mare. She’s got a few problems. She’s got bad feet and that. This track today suits here. She had a problem her last start. She had five weeks between runs because she got an infection in her leg. We had to treat her with penicillin and stuff. So her training was interrupted. So she just wasn’t fit enough. Apart from that though, she has won three out of her last four starts.”
Jockey Bobby El-Issa (who completed a race-to-race double on the day): “She is a speed filly, mate. David (Murphy) does a good job with her. I think the further they go, the further she will with by. The last start ... well, she hadn’t seen the gates in for a couple of weeks but, once she is in front this filly, she dictates terms. She is a natural front-runner. She’ll take some catching over further.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Martha’s Vineyard): 6.00 out to 7.50.
Favourite (Brookie Babe): 3.50 out to 4.40. Finished in a dead-heat for third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Moncalieri (S. Galloway) jumped away awkwardly and bumped the hind quarters of Cicarelli (A. Taylor). Chabeli (L. Cassidy) also jumped away awkwardly. Musically (T. Treichel) was slow to begin.
Passing the 800m, Miss Echelon (M. Radecker), which was inclined to pull hard, shifted out from behind the heels of Falvalea (D. Craven). Miss Echelon continued to pull hard and raced ungenerously and near the 600m shifted out, inconveniencing Slinky Chelle (R. Wiggins), which had to be eased as a result. Moncalieri (S. Galloway), which was following, was also inconvenienced. Cicarelli (A. Taylor) raced wide for the majority of the race. M. Radecker, rider of Miss Echelon, reported that, in her opinion, the mare pulled hard in running and choked down. A post-race veterinary examination of Miss Echelon failed to reveal any abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of Moncalieri, S. Galloway stated that he was not entirely disappointed with the filly's run today as she had stepped up in class and he felt the filly was not entirely suited by the pattern of the race with the pace being slow in the early and middle stages.
Race 7:
CG&E Class 3 Handicap - 1110m
1st - Cat Eyes; 2nd - Snorkel; 3rd - Unsupervised
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelso Wood: “He’s been off quite a while (nine months). He had a problem with one of his feet. A bone was rotating. So we basically had to give him a lot of time so that his foot could grow properly. He was ridden to perfection today. From a good barrier you can run up behind the pace like that. He’s got a bit of gate speed you can use from a good draw. But this was fresh up after a rest, you know. He’ll get up to a mile quite comfortably.”
Jockey Danny Craven: “I sat just off the speed and ... yeah, I had their measure most of the way. I always had them covered. Just when he got to the front he sort of half wanted to wait for them. He pulled up waiting for the second horse to skip up and then he got going again. He did it easy. It was just too good for them. Kelso Wood trains them that way.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Cat Eyes): 6.00 out to 7.50.
Favourite (Nicolo Sequalo): 4.80 in to 3.70 out to 3.80. Finished tenth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Sword Of Damocles (R. Goltz) was inclined to lay out rounding the first turn. Approaching the 600m, Sword Of Damocles, which was inclined to over-race, improved up on to the heels of Zdarsky (K. Banks). Rounding the home turn, Cat Eyes (D. Craven) shifted out to improve, forcing Zdarsky wider on the track. On straightening, King Of Spirit (M. Hughes) attempted to shift out from behind the heels of Zdarsky, making contact with Sword Of Damocles, resulting in that horse shifting out on to Unsupervised (C. Reith) and Mr Standfast (S. Seamer), forcing those two runners wider on the track. M. Hughes, rider of King Of Spirit, was instructed to exercise more care when attempting to shift ground. Snorkel (Michael Palmer) was held up in the early stages of the straight. Near the 100m, Ponche Soto (S. Bogenhuber) had to be steadied when improving onto the heels of the tiring Nicolo Sequalo and shifted in to obtain clear running.
When questioned regarding the performance of Nicolo Sequalo, J. Byrne stated that the gelding, which was resuming from a spell, was inclined to over-race and as a consequence did not finish the race off as expected. A post-race veterinary examination of Nicolo Sequalo failed to reveal any abnormalities.
A post-race veterinary examination of Unsupervised revealed the gelding to be exhibiting an abnormal respiratory noise. A veterinary clearance will be required for the gelding prior to its next race start. The veterinary surgeon also reported Zdarsky had sustained a minor laceration to the off side nostril.
Race 8:
Class 4 Handicap - 1650m
1st - Frisco's In Charge; 2nd - Showciti; 3rd - Raincoat
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Frank Phillips: “He was ridden upside-down today - but we still got the result. I don’t exactly know why that happened, but the horse seemed very fresh walking around here before the race and I think he ran accordingly.”
Jockey Jason Taylor: “Yeah, he was ridden upside-down. There didn’t look to be too much pace in the race and the horse began probably a little bit better than I thought he would and he got travelling a little bit stronger than I thought he would. So we were naturally closer than I thought I thought we would be. He just wanted to pull a bit through the race. I had to go a touch early too, which didn’t help. But he survived that pressure in the finish. He just kept fighting.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Frisco’s In Charge): 6.00 out to 8.50.
Favourite (Raincoat): 2.70 out to 3.50. Finished third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As L Cassidy was to be overweight stewards permitted S. Seamer as the replacement rider for Starelie. L Cassidy was fined the sum of $100 under AR120(b). Starelie (S. Seamer) and Hike (S. Scriven) were tightened shortly after the start between Raincoat (L. Rolls), which shifted out, and Showciti (A. Pattillo), which shifted in. When the pace slowed passing the 1200m, Hike (S. Scriven) raced ungenerously and had to be checked off the heels of Frisco’s In Charge (J. Taylor). Hike then shifted inwards on to the rails, forcing Starelie to be checked and strike the running rail. Magique Mine (B. El-Issa) and Cassardi (A. Taylor) and Lucky Toss (K. Banks) were all hampered and forced wider. Showciti was held up for clear running for some distance rounding the home turn and until near the 200m. Passing the 200m, Showciti was momentarily cramped for room when taking a narrow run between Frisco’s In Charge (J. Taylor) and Three Tenors (B. Evans), which shifted out. After passing the winning post, ShowcitiI shifted in, tightening the running of Three Tenors, causing Three Tenors to be checked. A. Pattillo, rider of Showciti, was advised to exercise more care.
Race 9:
Class 6 Handicap - 1350m
1st - Manic Monday; 2nd - Silvern; 3rd - Superfly
WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Paul Nolan (Jnr): “This was overdue. She just had to bring her Saturday form here. She’s just been busting to win one. She hasn’t had much luck her last five or six runs. Continually draws bad alleys. She drew a decent alley today, for her ... but, yet again, just a brilliant ride from Bobby (El-Issa, you know ... and another El Moxie. This whole combination has been working well for us in recent times. I feel she really deserved that win and it was a good thing for us because we are going to breed from her later this year. She is probably best around this sort of distance. The key to her is getting enough pace on and there was nice pace on there today. So, yeah, probably around that distance, but, who knows, if she got into a 1400m or 1500m with pace on, she probably would still hit the line good. She is going to find it hard now in the Winter, but if she can strike the right Class 6 with a bit of pace on, she might be some chance. Either way, we are going to stay clear of the Fillies and Mares Listed races and things like that. ”
This result gave jockey Bobby El-Issa his third winner on the day.
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Manic Monday): 5.00 out to 7.00.
Favourite (Black Morgan): 2.40 in to 2.30 out to 2.35. Finished fifth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Apprentice L. Rolls was fined $100 for accepting an engagement on Calumet when he held an engagement on Black Morgan. Black Morgan (L. Rolls) was held up rounding the home turn and had difficulty gaining clear running in the straight. Jacaranda Leader (S. Galloway) raced wide throughout.
